PRESIDENT’S LETTER

DEAR FJA® EAGLE® MEMBERS:

As FJA® President-elect throughout the past year, I witnessed firsthand the incredible support and camaraderie that exists within the FJA®. It has been an honor to work alongside colleagues dedicated to protecting our civil justice system and defending it against those who are actively engaging in activities to destroy it and block access to the courts.

This past year has been one of the most challenging years in FJA’s history. We were faced with an army of opponents, all heavily invested in passing a slate of bills during the 2023 legislative session that would limit the ability of average Floridians to hold wrongdoers accountable with measures that significantly blocked access to the courts.

Despite this, and the 429 lobbyists hired by our opponents to pass these laws, the FJA, and specifically the EAGLE program, were able to expand our base to fight back, with an army of FJA members that fought the Chamber and the Insurance Industry. Frankly this incredible response is one I expected because I have learned over the years that the DNA of this organization is such that it thrives in the face of adversity. It has been an honor to work alongside our EAGLE members, new and old as we fought together in the battle of a generation to defend Florida’s civil justice system from those actively seeking to destroy it.

Thanks to all who responded to the call. I am happy to report that the ranks of our EAGLE program are bigger and stronger than ever. This afforded us the vital resources necessary to mobilize in Tallahassee during the 2023 legislative session.

Our EAGLE® members also helped us mobilize hundreds of citizen advocates from throughout Florida to advocate against the omnibus tort legislation, HB 837. Mobilizing these citizen voices to share real-world stories is critical. With FJA members’ support, we will continue to focus on giving a platform to your clients as part of our advocacy program for many years to come.

It is because of FJA’s EAGLE program that these client stories were heard. A special thanks to all who mobilized their clients and local organizations to help in our efforts in Tallahassee.

This year, as your President, I am committed to continuing to fight. The attacks on our civil justice system will not stop and will only seek to further limit access to the courts. It is going to take every one of our members working together to preserve justice for all.

I hope that each of you will join me in welcoming new members and showcasing the good work that we do. As EAGLE® members, you understand the importance of protecting our practice, our clients, and the civil justice system, and I am grateful for your ongoing dedication and support.

This Tribute Book is dedicated to you, fellow EAGLEs. In this book, you will find:

• 2023 EAGLE Legacy Award recipients

• 2023 Legend, Gold, Silver and Bronze EAGLE Award recipients

• 2023 Recruiting Champion

• Lifetime Recruiting Champions

• EAGLE Hall of Fame Members and 2023 Inductees

• Previous Legend EAGLE Award recipients

• Business Friends of EAGLE

As we continue to navigate the challenges ahead, I urge all of my fellow EAGLEs, to stand with us and help carry on the fight. If we stand together, committed unwaveringly to the work required to preserve justice, we will not be defeated.

Thank you for your friendship, your strength, and your continued dedication to the FJA®.

Sincerely,

4 2023 EAGLE TRIBUTE BOOK

STEPHEN HOSKINS

HOSKINS, TURCO, LLOYD & LLOYD

Steve Hoskins is the Senior Partner at Hoskins, Turco, Lloyd & Lloyd, concentrating in the areas of car accidents, truck accidents, slip & fall accidents, wrongful death and insurance litigation matters.

After receiving his legal training from the distinguished Cumberland School of Law in Birmingham, Alabama, Steve was admitted to The Florida Bar in 1980 and now has over 38 years of experience in personal injury litigation.

Steve is a Board Certified Civil Trial Lawyer, proudly serving the people and communities of Port St. Lucie, Vero Beach, Fort Pierce, and Okeechobee in the Middle and Southern District Federal Courts. Board certification is one of the highest recognitions a lawyer can receive, recognizing an attorney’s knowledge, skill and proficiency, professionalism, and ethics in his or her practice. Currently, only 7 percent of all the lawyers in Florida, not just personal injury attorneys, are Board Certified and recognized as legal experts dedicated to professional excellence.

Steve is a native of Fort Pierce and his family has been here since 1908. For decades, Steve Hoskins has been steadfast in demanding justice and fighting for the rights of his fellow Treasure Coast and Lake Okeechobee area neighbors who have been harmed because of the negligence of others. Steve has been recognized with numerous professional and community awards for both his legal services and charitable contributions; the most recent of which include the Florida Justice Association’s BRONZE EAGLE award, which recognizes Steve’s leadership when it comes to upholding the civil justice system and protecting the rights of Florida citizens.

2023 EAGLE® TRIBUTE BOOK 37

FJA® is proud to recognize the leaders whose efforts to recruit new attorneys into the EAGLE® program have broadened the base of our organization. Relationships developed in the initial steps of membership lay the foundation for commitments to the EAGLE® program in the future.

A cornerstone is defined as “something that is essential, indispensable, or basic.” It is: “the chief foundation on which something is constructed or developed.” With this in mind, FJA created the Cornerstone Award as a tribute to those who have worked tirelessly over the last year to bring new members into the organization. Recipients of this award were selected based on the number of members they recruited as well as the monetary value of those memberships.

Our non-recourse structure has been well received by law firms for years and continues to provide a solution to a common challenge. We offer financing from $250-$50,000.

FLORIDA JUSTICE PAC®

WHEN PRO-JUSTICE CANDIDATES PREVAIL, FLORIDA WINS!

EVERY ELECTION IS AN OPPORTUNITY

Protecting Florida’s civil justice system is a full-time job. Florida Justice PAC makes that job a little easier by identifying pro-justice candidates and helping them win elections. Florida Justice PAC is there every step of the way, making sure pro-justice candidates have the knowledge, resources, and tools they need to win.

OUR ENEMIES SLEEP IN SHIFTS

We cannot afford to be bystanders this election cycle. It is too important for the future success of the FJA and for your practices. We will not see another opportunity like this for decades.

OUR STRENGTH IS IN OUR NUMBERS

By bringing together hundreds of firms and individuals from across Florida and identifying the most effective ways to allocate their contributions, we ensure that your individual contribution has the maximum effect.

IT IS ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL

that we have pro-justice legislators seated when reapportionment occurs. We cannot leave reapportionment in the hands of those who are unfriendly to the civil justice system. The fate of your clients and the future of your practices depend on it.
