FTBOA Announces Significant Increases in Florida Breeder and Stallion Awards for 2024 Thanks to Recently Passed Legislation

he Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association announced on Oct. 5 a substantial increase in awards paid to Florida breeders and stallion owners for 2024 through their Annual Awards Plan that is approved by the Florida Gaming Control Commission. The Plan increases, enabled by HB 7063, would grow Florida breeder and stallion awards by one-third, from the 15% level in 2023 to as much 20% of the announced gross purse in 2024. HB 7063 is a $1.3 billion tax package championed by the FTBOA, ultimately supported by the state’s Thoroughbred industry and signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis on May 25. It includes $5 million provided to the FTBOA for Florida breeding awards and incentives.

“The historic passage of HB 7063 has a profound positive effect on the Florida Thoroughbred breeder and stallion awards as evidenced by this announcement,” FTBOA CEO Lonny Powell said. “The Florida-bred benefit carries to the racing side in a big way in the form of significantly more lucrative purse supplements for Florida-breds at both Gulfstream Park and Tampa Bay Downs. At Gulfstream Park in 2024, we project that dollars offered to our Florida-breds will increase an amazing 90 percent in 2024 compared to this year. The Tampa Bay Downs incentives gain another 50 percent.

Breeder awards will be paid at 12.5% of purses for first place, 5% for second place and 2.5% for third place, subject to specified caps. Those caps would also increase to $12,500 for first (an increase from $10,500 in 2023), $5,000 for second (an increase from $3,000), and $2,500 for third (an increase from $1,500). Stallion awards in 2024 will be capped at $20,000 (an increase from $15,000) for wins in black-type races in Florida.

“We are already working on 2026 and beyond.”

The total Florida breeder and stallion awards budget for 2024 is projected to be more than $8 million, a 52% increase from $5.3 million in 2023. “On behalf of our board, FTBOA members and industry, I can’t emphasize enough how important and significant these Florida-bred breeder awards and racing incentives are to the breeders and owners of Florida-breds and how they bring stability to the industry,” FTBOA President George Isaacs said. “Thank you to Lonny Powell, Matt Bryan, Jon Rees, Warren Husband and the team. OBITUARY Travis Davis Travis Davis Sr., 83 of Ocala, Fla., passed away Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023. Born in Casey County, Ky., on Oct. 1, 1939, to Herman and Grace Davis who predeceased him. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Nettie Davis, daughter Wanda Travis Davis | Family Photo Robinson and brother Bubby Davis. Travis is survived by his son, Travis Davis Jr. and daughters Kathy Maynard (Gus), Roxanna Simpson (John), Roetta Coller (Randy) and Theresa Vega (Timmy); brothers Mitchell, Thiral (Sandy), and Ruel (Wanda) Davis; in addition to 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Laurie Plesa and Glassman Racing LLC’s Florida-bred Time Passage wired the field in the $60,000 Soaring Softly overnight handicap on Sept. 9 against five other fillies and mares going a mile-and-seventy yards on the synthetic course at Gulfstream Park for her second consecutive victory. The Eddie Plesa-trained daughter of Bridlewood Farm stallion Tunwoo carried jockey Edgard Zayas to a lengthand-a-half lead ahead of Ocean Safari and Double Cosmo Girl in a joint second through a leisurely quarter mile in :24.13. Time Passage quickened the pace for a :47.30 halfmile while extending her margin to two lengths entering the far turn where Ocean Safari and Double Cosmo Girl could not keep pace. Florida-bred Chick’s Shadow moved into second but failed to muster a challenge as Time Passage galloped to the finish and win by two-and-aquarter lengths in 1:40.07. Chick’s Shadow was second, seven lengths clear of To Thyself B True in third. Double Cosmo Girl, Ocean Safari and Florida-bred Race Day Speed completed the order of finish. Rastani was scratched. Time Passage paid $4 to win as the even-money favorite. A 3-year-old daughter of the stakes-winning Kantharos mare Savingtime, Time Passage is a half-sister to 2021 FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes Susan’s Girl-winner Outfoxed. Time Passage came into the Soaring Softly after winning a first-level, $25,000 optional claiming at a mile-and-a-seventy-yards on the all-weather course at Gulfstream on Aug. 20. She now has four wins in 11 starts with two seconds while earning $193,495. Karl and Cathi Glassman purchased Time Passage for $85,000 out of the 2021 Ocala Breeders’ Sales October Yearling Sale where she was consigned by Stuart Morris. n

Poiema Wins Stormy Embrace Overnight Handicap as Heavy Favorite Making her second start for owner and trainer Joseph Catanese III, Florida-bred Poiema ran away from her rivals early and provided a popular victory in the

In her first start for Catanese on Aug. 18 at Gulfstream, Poiema finished second to Battle Cry after leading most of the way in a second level, $62,500 optional claiming going a mile over a sloppy track. Earlier this year, Poiema was second to Florida-bred Bluefield in the $60,000 Musical Romance overnight handicap going seven furlongs at Gulfstream in April. The victory in the Stormy Embrace improved her lifetime record to five wins, five seconds and two thirds in 22 starts and boosted her earnings to $241,685. Out of the Florida-bred mare Coco’s Legacy, by Mass Media, Poiema twice sold at Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company. Summerfield consigned her to the 2020 OBS October Yearling Sale where Servando Espinoza took her for $9,000. Then Little Farm Equine consignment sold her for $14,000 to Larry Bates at the 2021 OBS June Sale. Poiema was bred by Cheryl Janine McGuire and James Patrick McQuire of St. Augustine Florida. n

Big and Classy Lives Up to Name in Jackson Bend Keith Johnston and Chris Aulds’ Florida-bred Big and Classy lived up to his name and the bettors’ expectations Sept. 23 at Gulfstream Park while easily capturing the $65,000 Jackson Bend overnight handicap by three-and-a-half lengths. Sent to post at the 3-5 favorite, the strapping 4-year-old son of The Big Beast notched his eighth victory in 2023 to move into a tie with Wyoming-based Fayette Warrior for the most wins in North America this year. “His name says it all,” trainer Bobby Dibona said. “I keep saying that, but his name says everything. He’s a gem. He’s got a big heart. He just knows how to do it.” Big and Classy, the 123-pound highweight in the seven-furlong handicap for 3-year-olds and older, broke well from the gate to sit just off pacesetter Warrior’s Pride along the backstretch and far turn before taking the lead on the turn into the homestretch. Big and Classy ran seven furlongs in 1:22.56. Avant Glory finished second under Edwin Gonzalez, two-and-threequarter lengths ahead of Zydeceaux and jockey Sonny Leon. Cajun’s Magic, Warrior’s Pride and Starship Renegade completed the order of finish. While the Jackson Bend was open, all starters were bred in Florida. Big and Classy paid $3.40 to win. He went on to finish second behind Florida-bred Dean Delivers in the Grade 3 Smile Sprint on July 1 before winning an upper level, $62,500 optional claiming and coming up a length short of victory last time out while second in the Edwin T. Broome Memorial Handicap won by Long Range Toddy. Big and Classy now has nine career wins in 20 starts with three seconds and a third while earning $321,720. Damon’s Mound Splashes Home in Gallant Bob for Second Straight Stakes Victory Florida-bred Damon’s Mound produced his second straight score against added-money company on Sept. 23 as the Floridabred colt won the Grade 2 Gallant Bob at Parx Racing by a determined length-and-a-quarter over a sloppy and sealed six furlongs. It was also the first graded score for the Michelle Lovell-trained colt, who won the Grade 2 Saratoga Special in his second career start in August of last year. Damon’s Mound, who won the $350,000 Robert Hilton Memorial by two lengths on Aug. 25 at Charles Town in his last start, became the first Florida-bred since Firenze Fire in 2018 to win the $400,000 Gallant Bob, which this year featured a field of nine 3-year-olds. Sent to the post as the 9-5 favorite with Junior Alvarado aboard, Damon’s Mound broke well from post four before settling into third, about two lengths behind 5-2 second choice Ryvit and 13-1 shot Sir Lancelot, who raced together through a first quarter-mile in :21.68. Ryvit took a momentary lead around the far turn before Damon’s Mound, with Nautical Star to his outside, went to the front while finishing the half-mile in :45.29. Ryvit could not keep up turning for home, but Nautical Star continued to challenge until just inside the furlong pole when Damon’s Mound began to draw off and won with a clear lead in 1:10.24. Nautical Star held second, three-and-a-half lengths in front of Gordian Knot in third. Ninetypercentmaddie, Ryvit, Dreaming of Kona, Depoli, Praetorian Guard and Sir Lancelot completed the order of finish. Freedom Road was scratched. Damon’s Mound paid $5.60 to win. The victory confirmed a return to form for Damon’s Mound, who before the Robert Hilton had gone more than 12 months and five starts without a victory after winning the Saratoga Special. He has now won four of nine career starts with one second while earning $601,700 for owners Cliff and Michele Love of Friendswood, Tx. “I’m very happy with the win [by Damon’s Mound] and just happy he’s healthy and running well,” Love said. Bred by Cliff Love, Damon’s Mound is the first foal out of the multiple stakes-winning mare San Antonio Stroll, by Stroll. Love recently sold San Antonio Stroll while in foal to Ocala Stud stallion Roadster for $175,000 in the Fasig-Tipton August Digital Sale. San Antonio Stroll, a fifth-generation broodmare from Love’s longtime Thoroughbred breeding program, was purchased by fellow Texas horseman and Florida breeder Brad Grady in the

name of Girvin’s Girls. Grady is the owner of Girvin, named for Grady’s hometown in Texas, and owns the Grand Oaks Equine Training Center in Reddick, Fla. “I’m thrilled that Brad Grady bought [San Antonio Stroll],” Love said. The Love’s have several full-siblings to Damon’s Mound including a 2-year-old unraced filly, Moon Mist, an unnamed yearling colt and a weanling filly. n

Florida-bred Chi Chi Gets First Career Win in E.L. Gaylord Ernest C. Frohboese’s Chi Chi entered the $50,000 E.L. Gaylord a maiden and exited a stakes winner as the Florida-bred filly won for the first time in the six-and-a-half-furlong test for 2-year-old fillies at Remington Park Sept. 24. Ridden by Edwin Gonzalez for trainer Herman Wilensky, Chi Chi bested the field of eight by a length-and-a-quarter after traveling to Oklahoma from her base in Southern California. Chi Chi was also making her career debut on dirt after two unsuccessful tries against special weight maidens, both while sprinting five furlongs on the grass at Del Mar. She finished fifth, two-and-a-half lengths short of winner Mysticism on Aug. 4 and was fourth last out behind winner Soho on Sept. 8. But Chi Chi was able to produce a winning effort in the E.L. with Hittin My Stride and Chi Chi tracking in a joint second from about a length back in the early going. After a quarter-mile split in :22.37, Hitting My Stride took over from between horses in the turn with Chi Chi to her outside as Katie’s Spirit dropped back on the rail and Curlin’s Magic launched a bid while four wide. Chi Chi and Curlin’s Magic emerged from the pack in tandem coming out of the turn but Chi Chi got the advantage in deep stretch and won by daylight in 1:17.98 on the fast track. Curlin’s Magic held second, two-and-a-quarter lengths faster than Tx Women for Arts in third. Hittin My Stride finished fourth

followed by Magnolia Avenue, Katies Spirit, Too Much Dreaming and Okie Trouble. Chi Chi was sent to the post at 5-1 and paid $13.40 to win. By Audible out of the stakes-placed Candy Ride (Arg) mare Simply Confection, Chi Chi is a half-sister to Grade 2 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth and $150,000 Mucho Macho Man-winner Simplification, the 2022 FTBOA Florida-bred Horse of the Year. She is the second stakes winner for Simply Confection, who has an unnamed yearling filly by Union Rags and a weanling filly by Not This Time. Simply Confection was bred to Into Mischief in 2023. Chi Chi was bred by France Weiner and is a graduate of the 2022 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Winter Mixed Sale where she did not meet her reserve from the consignment of Stuart Morris. Florida horseman and longtime Williston, Fla. resident Tim Ahearn lost his five-year battle with cancer on March 14, 2023. Mr. Ahearn, along with his wife and son, worked their 40-acre Rebah Farm Tim Ahearn Family Photo in northwest Marion county for nearly four decades. He was the breeder of many talented racehorses including Florida-bred champion Scratch Pad. He lived his passion for raising race horses with his family by his side. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Carol, son Tim Jr., sisters Patricia, Rita, Mary, Patty and brother Jack, along with many nieces, nephews and extended family. He is irreplaceable and will be missed by all who knew him. n n

Ironhorse Racing Stable LLC and Harlow Stables LLC’s Mattingly earned his first career stakes victory in convincing fashion Sept. 30 as the Florida-bred son of Pleasant Acres Stallions’ Bucchero won the $65,000 Hollywood Beach by a length-and-three-quarters at Gulfstream Park. In defeating four other 2-year-olds over five furlongs on the Gulfstream Park synthetic course, Mattingly also earned a $25,000 Florida-bred win bonus presented by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association. Sent to the post as the 3-2 favorite, Mattingly and jockey Samy Camacho broke best of all from post three but Florida-bred Esperon sprinted to a clear lead from the rail and quickly put three lengths on Mattingly and 9-5 second choice Prevent, who were together in second. Esperon blazed the first quarter-mile in :21.14 before Mattingly began to close in from the two path around the far turn. Esperon held a length lead out of the turn but Mattingly had him in his sights as Okiro also began to threaten on the outside. Mattingly took over from between those two inside the final furlong and continued to extend his lead to wire to finish the Hollywood Beach in :56.67. Okiro was second, a length ahead of Esperon in third. Prevent and El Principito were fourth and fifth respectively. Hermoso Hombre and Roar Ready were scratched. Mattingly paid $5 to win. It was the second career win from four starts for Mattingly, who earned his first stakes victory in three tries. He debuted in

the $100,000 Royal Palm Juvenile on the Gulfstream Park turf in May and finished second to No Nay Mets (Ire), who has since won the $112,000 Tyro at Monmouth Park and the $131,000 Exacta Systems Rosie’s at Colonial Downs. Mattingly then won a maiden special weight by nearly six lengths on the Gulfstream Park synthetic in June then before finishing second to Pipit in the CA$126,000 Victoria going five-and-a-half furlongs on synthetic main track at Woodbine on July 16. “I learned a lot in that Woodbine race,” trainer Joe Orseno said. “When it scratched down to four horses, we thought, ‘Just go. He’s fast.’ He got stuck in a speed duel to set it up for the horse coming off of it. I said, ‘That’s not going to happen again. I know the ‘one’ is a very fast horse. I used to train his brother. I said, ‘We’ve got to let the ‘one’ and ‘three’ go.’ That was the plan we took, and it worked.” “We think he’s a very talented 2-year-old with a bright future.” The $64,000 payday for winning the Hollywood Beach boosted Mattingly’s career earnings to $147,028. Bred in Florida by Lance Colwell of Williston, Fla., Mattingly is out of Grand Slam mare Battingstar, who has produced six winners from six foals with Mattingly her first stakes-winner. Ironhorse Racing Stable purchased Mattingly for $70,000 out of the Two Oaks Equine consignment earlier this year at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales March Sale. n

Ridden by Cristian Torres, the Florida-bred son of Arindel stallion Brethren took the winner’s share of the $438,000 Lukas Classic for 3-year-olds and older who went a mile-and-an-eighth. Five Star General took the field of eight around the clubhouse turn and led by two lengths ahead of Americanrevolution and Trademark in a joint second with Clapton racing in seventh, 10 lengths off the pace. Five Star General continued to show the way through the first two furlongs in :23.12 and led down the backstretch to complete the half-mile in :46.66 as Clapton began to pass horses nearing the far turn. Americanrevolution went to the front with a quarter-mile to the finish before Trademark shot to the lead at the top of the stretch with Clapton widest of all and five lengths to make up. Trademark had a length advantage on Clapton and Blue Devil on the rail while passing the sixteenth marker before Clapton surged to the front in the final strides to get the narrow victory in 1:48.79 on the fast track. Trademark finished three-quarters of a length ahead of Blue Devil in third followed by 6-5 favorite Rattle N Roll. Happy American, Americanrevolution, Whelen Springs and Five Star General completed the order of finish. Warrant was scratched. Clapton paid $18.32 to win at odds of 8-1. “I was very happy with the way he was traveling,” Torres said after winning his third race Saturday at Churchill Downs. “Around the half-mile pole, I could tell I had a lot of horse beneath me. I tipped him outside at the quarter-pole and he kept

Winning these big races is a great feeling.” While still racing for breeder Arindel, Clapton won the Grade 3 Ghostzapper at Gulfstream Park in April, was third behind winner Rattle N Roll in the Grade 3 Pimlico Special on May 19 and second to Charge It in the Grade 2 Suburban at Belmont Park on July 8. He was then purchased by Sheikh Rashid Bin Humaid al Nuaimi’s RRR Racing and sent to trainer Chad Summers for the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Saratoga on Sept. 2 where he finished fourth, beaten just more than two lengths by winner Bright Future. Summers then strategically selected the Lukas Classic for Clapton. “There were three races this weekend we could’ve ran in: the Woodward in New York, the Awesome Again in California and here in the Lukas Classic,” Summers said. “I tried to handicap

them and see what race would fit this horse best. I figured there would be the most speed in this race. That benefitted our running style.” Overall, Clapton has won six of 24 starts with four seconds and six thirds. The $240,560 first prize boosted his career earnings to $823,450. “I’m so grateful to the owner for allowing me the opportunity to train this horse,” Summers said. “The goal is getting to the Dubai World Cup. If that means taking us to the Breeders’ Cup that would be great. But, the goal is getting him over to Dubai in March.” He is the only stakes-winner for the Afleet Alex mare Alexandra Rylee, winner of the 2010 Brandywine at Philadelphia Park. She has produced five starters, all winners including Knox, a full brother to Clapton who was third in last year’s FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes In Reality. Alexandra Rylee has an unnamed yearling filly by Brethren and was bred to Brethren again in 2023.

Calypso Racing Stables 2022 LLC’s Pardy Pleaser went to the lead inside the final sixteenth of a mile to win a $35,000 maiden claiming at Gulfstream Park Sept 30 and give her sire, Rogueish, his first winner. Trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. and ridden by Edgard Zayas, Pardy Pleaser won by two-and-three-quarter lengths in :57.82 after rallying from fifth in the field of seven 2-year-old fillies going five furlongs on the all-weather course. It was the third career start for the bay filly, who is out of Kitten Squared, by Kitten’s Joy and was bred in Florida by Edward Seltzer. The bay filly has career earnings of $26,400. Florida-breds Pleasant Embrace and Kaitie Kait were second and third respectively. Pardy Pleaser paid $5.40 to win. Rogueish, who stands at Solera Farm in Williston, Fla., is by Into Mischief out of the Rahy mare Verdana Bold, winner of the Grade 3 Selene at Woodbine in 2008. TALLAHASSEE, FL — After a federal appeals court ruled against them, two pari-mutuel companies on Sept. 26 asked the Florida Supreme Court to strike down part of a multibilliondollar deal that would give the Seminole Tribe control over sports betting throughout the state. The challenge, filed by West Flagler Associates and Bonita-Fort Myers Corp., alleges the deal runs afoul of a 2018 constitutional amendment requiring voter approval of expansions of casinostyle gambling. West Flagler holds three jai alai licenses, while Bonita-Fort Myers Corp. does business as Bonita Springs Poker Room in Southwest Florida. Gov. Ron DeSantis and Seminole Tribe of Florida Chairman Marcellus Osceola, Jr. signed the deal, known as a compact, in 2021 and state lawmakers ratified it. A “hub-and-spoke” plan in the agreement allowed the Seminoles to accept sports wagers from mobile devices anywhere in the state, with the bets run through servers on tribal land. The deal said bets “using a mobile app or other electronic device, shall be deemed to be exclusively conducted by the tribe. The lawsuit filed Tuesday at the Supreme Court accused DeSantis and the Legislature of exceeding their power by allowing sports betting off tribal lands — without approval from voters. “This abuse of authority warrants this court’s review and correction,” Raquel Rodriguez, a Miami-based attorney with the Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC firm, wrote in the 76-page lawsuit known as a “petition for a writ of quo warranto.” The challenge pointed to part of the constitutional amendment that says it “ensures that Florida voters shall have the exclusive right to decide whether to authorize casino gambling” in the state. The amendment includes an exception for gambling that takes place on tribal lands. “The amendment is an enduring grant to the people themselves – and only them — to authorize new gambling in Florida. The constitutional provision should be interpreted for sports betting as it exists today,” Rodriguez wrote. The amendment, known as Amendment 3, applies to types of gambling found in casinos and to types of gambling that are considered Class III under federal law. A presentation by DeSantis’ lawyers to Florida lawmakers in 2021 noted that, “because of Amendment 3, commercial sports betting outside of a tribal compact is unconstitutional in Florida.” The lawsuit accuses DeSantis and legislators of constructing the sports-betting plan and an accompanying law in a manner designed to skirt the constitutional requirement for a statewide vote. DeSantis and lawmakers “sought to bypass” and “avoid the

requirements” of the amendment “not by actually limiting sports betting to Indian lands, but by labeling the problem away. But the Florida Constitution cannot be so easily avoided,” the lawsuit said. “The governor and Legislature’s fiction does not change the reality that the governor and Legislature are seeking to authorize gambling that takes place off Indian lands.” The lawsuit called the setup deeming wagers placed anywhere in the state to have occurred on tribal lands — where the computer servers handling bets would be located — a “transparent artifice” to try to meet the exception in the amendment. “This artifice to avoid [the amendment’s] requirement of a citizens’ initiative is contrary to established law, the undisputed facts and common sense,” Rodriguez argued. The state lawsuit came as the pari-mutuel operators also seek a U.S. Supreme Court review of the compact in a separate federal-court case. That case alleges the compact violates the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, or IGRA, which regulates gambling on tribal lands. U.S. District Judge Dabney Friedrich in 2021 ruled against the compact, calling the sports-betting plan a “fiction” and invalidating other parts of the agreement. But a panel of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia overturned Friedrich’s ruling, and the full appeals court this month refused to reconsider the panel decision. The pari-mutuels filed a motion saying they intended to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to weigh in on the issue, arguing that the outcome could “represent a blueprint for expanded gaming outside of Indian lands.” The Seminoles briefly rolled out the Hard Rock SportsBook mobile app amid the legal wrangling but stopped accepting wagers and deposits on the app in December 2021 after Friedrich’s ruling. The pending cases will keep sports betting in Florida in limbo, at least for now. “Do I think online sports betting will ultimately be allowed under the compact? It’s probably a better than 50 percent chance that the Seminole Tribe will end up .. having the ability to roll out online sports betting. But the key question for today is one of timing,” Daniel Wallach, an attorney who specializes in gambling law, told The News Service of Florida on Tuesday. “What is known is these parallel judicial proceedings will likely cause further delay in the timing of the rollout of online sports betting.” Isadore Havenick, an owner of the pari-mutuels whose family has operated gambling facilities in Florida for more than Continued on page 26

With her victory in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies in 1990, Florida-bred Meadow Star completed a stellar undefeated juvenile season on her way to an Eclipse Award. BY JOANN GUIDRY Describing Meadow Star as precocious would be a bit of an understatement. A flashy bright chestnut built like a Quarter Horse with a dished Arabianlike head, Meadow Star was as eye-catching as she was talented. She posted an undefeated 2-yearold season in 1990 that included six graded stakes wins. Of those, four were at the Grade 1 level. Meadow Star won at sprint distances and was able to carry her speed going longer. Her combined winning margin in her seven juvenile seasonal wins was an impressive 26 ¼ lengths. Not surprisingly, she earned an Eclipse Award for her outstanding season. But Meadow Star was not a one-trick pony. She came back in her sophomore season to dazzle again, winning three graded stakes. Two of those were Grade 1 victories, including one of the alltime best races that ended in a photo finish that took more than six minutes to sort out the winner. And not only was Meadow Star a Florida-bred, she was a Florida-bred top and bottom. The 1988 chestnut mare was by Florida-bred Meadowlake out of Florida-bred Inreality Star, by Florida-bred In Reality. Jamie Carrion, who owned Ocala-based The Oaks, bred not only Meadow Star but her sire Meadowlake as well. Graded stakes-winner Meadowlake, a 1983 chestnut horse by Hold Your Peace out of Suspicious Native, by Raise A Native, was standing at The Oaks when Meadow Star was conceived. Carrion consigned Meadow Star through Robert E. Courtney to the 1989 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, where she was bought for $90,000 by Carl Icahn’s Foxfield. Meadow Star raced for Icahn and was trained by LeRoy Jolley throughout her outstanding career.

A PERFECT SEASON Meadow Star signaled her extraordinary talent in her very first start. On June 13, 1990, she broke her maiden by five-and-a-quarter lengths at Belmont Park. Her winning time for the five furlongs was :58.80. Jolley no doubt knew Meadow Star was indeed something special. Not only was her next race in stakes company, it was in graded-stakes company. On July 18 in the Grade 3 Astoria Breeders’ Cup, Meadow Star did not disappoint, winning by a length-and-a-quarter ahead of Sweet Sarita. Pay’n and Play’n was third. Winning time for the fiveand-a-half furlongs was 1:04.20. Only two weeks later, Jolley moved Meadow Star up one more notch in graded-stakes company. In the Grade 2 Schuylerville on Aug. 1 at Saratoga, she was more than up for the challenge. Meadow Star cruised to a three-length victory over Garden Gal with Prayerful Miss third. Meadow Star posted a 1:11.20 time for the six furlongs. Jolley did not shy away from the next logical step, starting Meadow Star the Grade 1 Spinaway. Again Icahn’s runner responded magnificently, besting Garden Gal by two lengths with Good Potential third. Meadow Star stopped the clock in 1:10.20 for the six furlongs. Meadow Star seemingly just got better and better, closing out her juvenile season with a trio of Grade 1 victories at Belmont Park. She won the Matron by six lengths on Sept. 16 in 1:22.80 for the seven furlongs. Then in a tour de force performance on Oct. 6, Meadow Star captured the Frizette by an eyebrow-raising 14 lengths in 1:35.40 for the mile distance. Continued on next page

After Meadow Star’s Frizette, Icahn announced that he was donating a majority of his filly’s earnings to the Children’s Rescue Fund. Billionaire financier Icahn established the charity to provide homes and scholarships for underprivileged children. Meadow Star added more money to the Children’s Rescue Fund in her next start, the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) on Oct. 27 at Belmont Park. Meadow Star went off the 1-5 favorite in the 13-horse field, but it was Dance Smartly who took the early lead. With stablemate Wilderness Song just to her inside, Dance Smartly posted fractions of :22.60, :45.80 and 1:11. Jockey Jose Santos kept Meadow Star well off the rail down the backstretch before beginning a four-wide rally on the far turn. Dance Smartly, Wilderness Song and Lite Light were contesting the lead when Meadow Star surged past the trio. By midstretch, Meadow Star was now leading by two lengths and crossed the finish line a five-length winner. She posted a winning time of 1:44 for the mile-and-a-sixteenth. Her Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies victory was the cherry on top of an undefeated season for Meadow Star. In seven wins in seven starts, she banked $992,250. Meadow Star was named the 1990 Florida-bred champion 2-year-old filly and nabbed an Eclipse Award in that same division.

It was a very good day for Florida-breds in the 1990 Breeders’ Cup Championship races. In addition to Meadow Star’s Juvenile Fillies triumph, Florida-bred Unbridled, who had won the 1990 Kentucky Derby (G1), captured the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). And Florida-bred Itsallgreektome led in deep stretch of Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) before succumbing to the furious late run of winner Royal Academy. Unbridled collected an Eclipse Award as champion 3-yearold colt and Itsallgreektome garnered an Eclipse Award as champion turf male.

THE MOTHER OF ALL GOOSES Meadow Star began her 1991 sophomore season in the same way she had closed out her juvenile year by winning. In the Queen of the Stage on March 16 at Aqueduct, Meadow Star was the best by four-and-three-quarter lengths ahead of fellow Florida-bred Nany’s Appeal. Christina Czarina was third. Winning time for the seven furlongs was 1:23.19. A mere two weeks later on March 30, Meadow Star was wheeled back in the Grade 2 Comely at Aqueduct and rolled to win by a length-andthree-quarters ahead of Do It With Style and I’m a Thriller in third. Over a surface rated wet, Meadow Star stopped the clock in 1:38.02 for the mile. In a head-scratcher move, Jolley next saddled Meadow Star in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial Invitational on April 20 at Aqueduct. Running against the best 3-year-old colts in the country was too much to ask of Meadow Star as she suffered the first defeat of her career, finishing a distant fourth behind winning Florida-bred Cahill Road, a full brother to Unbridled. But gutsy competitor that she was, Meadow Star rebounded to post two of the most impressive wins of her career. In the Grade 1 Acorn on May 25 at Belmont Park, Meadow Star rolled to a six-length win over Versailles Treaty with Dazzle Me Jolie nabbing third. Winning time for the mile was 1:37.42. Then only a little over two weeks later, Meadow Star would add to her legend with a gritty triumph in a race that instantly became a classic. The 1991 Grade 1 Mother Goose was not lacking for publicity. Not only was Meadow Star

in the race, but so was Lite Light. The latter, who had finished 12th to Meadow Star in the aforementioned Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, raced for rap star M.C. Hammer’s Oaktown Stable. Lite Light had developed into a multiple Grade 1 winner and came into the Mother Goose with Grade 1 wins in that season’s Las Virgenes and Santa Anita Oaks at Santa Anita, in the Grade 2 Fantasy at Oaklawn Park and the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs. Only two other fillies, Nalees Pin and Risen Colony, rounded out the four-horse Mother Goose field. The Belmont Park crowd was no doubt expecting a battle royale between Meadow Star and Lite Light, and the two stars did not disappoint. When the gates opened, jockey Jerry Bailey immediately sent Meadow Star to the lead and she opened up a two-length lead in a pedestrian :49.48 for the half-mile. Jockey Corey Nakatani on Lite Light began his drive to challenge Meadow Star, going six-wide in the stretch. A big, rangy bay filly, Lite Light’s long stride began closing the gap, slowly but surely, as she caught up to Meadow Star in deep stretch. But the muchsmaller Meadow Star, almost overshadowed by Lite Light, would not concede. For a moment, Lite Light seemed to get the advantage, but Meadow Star fought back on the inside. The two fillies hit the wire in tandem in a classic photo finish. Six minutes later, Meadow Star was the official winner by a sliver of a nose. Winning time for the nine furlongs was 1:48.92. As for Nalees Pin and Risen Colony, they finished third and fourth, respectively, more than 15 lengths behind Meadow Star and Lite Light. The Daily Racing Form dubbed, and rightfully so, the 1991 Mother Goose as “The Mother of All Gooses.” It was also reported that Icahn won a $35,000 private bet with M. C. Hammer.

THE PRICE OF FAME Unfortunately, Meadow Star’s magnificent gritty win in the Mother Goose took its toll and she was never the same. In a rematch with Lite Light in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks on July 7 at Belmont Park, Meadow Star was second by seven lengths to her rival. Meadow

1990 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Star closed out her sophomore season with four wins, including three graded, of which two were Grade 1, with one second, also in a Grade 1, with earnings of $414,700. She was named the 1991 Florida-bred champion 3-year-old filly. Their battles impacted both Meadow Star and Lite Light. 1992 Spinster Stakes (G1). Lite Light never won another race either, posting two thirds in graded-stakes company in the next two seasons. But thanks to YouTube.com, Meadow Star and Lite Light’s epic 1991 Mother Goose Stakes legacy lives on. Meadow Star retired at the end of the 1992 season with 11 wins, one second and two thirds for career earnings of $1,445,740. She recorded victories nine graded stakes, six of them being Grade 1 victories. As a broodmare, Meadow Star produced only five foals with four winners. Her best offspring was graded stakes placed-winner Grechelle, a 1995 filly by Deputy Minister. Grechelle produced Grade 3-winner Bubbler, by Distorted Humor, and stakes-winner Unbridled Femme, by Unbridled. Bubbler’s claim to fame is as the dam of the late Arrogate, who earned a 2016 Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old colt, making Meadow Star is the third dam of Arrogate. Meadow Star and the Fusaichi Pegasus colt she was carrying both died on April 11, 2002, from foaling complications at Hagyard Davidson McGee equine hospital near Lexington, Ky. BY BROCK SHERIDAN Ocala, FL—The FTBOA announced on Oct. 18 that George Isaacs, general manager of the historic Bridlewood Farm located in Ocala, was re-elected president of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association at a board meeting following the annual member meeting. “I have been fortunate to lead FTBOA at a time of legislative success that has been decades in the making, and at a time of innovation for the media division,” Isaacs said. “I am proud of these accomplishments and thrilled the board has elected me again to continue my service as president for the Association and its members.” FTBOA board members Milan Kosanovich of Ocala and Francis Vanlangendonck of Morriston extended their terms on the board while Beckie Cantrell of Ocala was for the first time named to the board. After a brief absence as board members due to term limits, past presidents Valerie Dailey and Brent Fernung rejoined the board. They will each serve a three-year term that will run through October 2026. Leaving the board because of term limits as outlined in the FTBOA by-laws were Bobby Jones and Dr. Fred Yutani, who served on the FTBOA

board from October 2017 through October 2023; and Richard Kent, who served briefly, taking the seat left with the passing of board member and past president Fred Brei in March of 2023. The board also selected the remaining executive committee officers for 2023-24 with Isaacs as president while George Russell, who owns Rustlewood Farm in Reddick, was named first vice president. Francis Vanlangendonck, who operates Summerfield in Morriston, was named second vice president; and Joseph M. O’Farrell with Ocala Stud will serve as treasurer. Nick de Meric, who operates de Meric Stables and Sales in Ocala, was elected as secretary. Past president and longtime officer and director Dailey, through her continued status as immediate past president, also serves as an executive committee member. Isaacs has a long history serving the Florida Thoroughbred industry as an FTBOA officer and serving six terms on the FTBOA board with intermissions as required by bylaws. Paulson’s Brookside South Farm in 1992. In 1996, Isaacs returned to Bridlewood as general manager and currently manages operations there for John and Leslie Malone, who purchased the farm in 2013. During his tenure at Bridlewood, more than 100 Florida-bred stakes winners and 12 Grade 1 winners have been bred by the farm. Isaacs is the chair of the Equine Studies Program at the College of Central Florida, is a Horse Farms Forever board member and an AdventHealth Ocala Foundation board member. Isaacs is the chair for the FTBOA Ocala Downtown Thoroughbred Walk of Fame committee and serves on the FTBOA Farmland Preservation Work Group. Cantrell retired from banking to concentrate on her Thoroughbred breeding farm with husband Kent Cantrell. Since 1998, the Cantrells have pinhooked weanlings to yearlings and bred a few mares each year. All of their resulting foals are registered Floridabreds and Cantrell is hands-on as the caregiver for each foal. Recently, Cantrell became a licensed realtor with Showcase Properties of Central Florida. Dailey has a long history serving both the agricultural and business markets throughout

Central Florida, including her service as the first woman FTBOA president from October 2021 through October 2022. A licensed realtor since 2005 and the owner/broker of the Ocalabased Showcase Properties of Central Florida since 2013, Dailey is a highly active member of the community and has been a small Thoroughbred breeder in Florida with husband Hugh since 1985. Fernung has been involved in the Thoroughbred industry for more than 45 years and with his wife Crystal, has operated Journeyman Bloodstock Services since 1989. The Fernungs own and operate the Ocala-based Journeyman Stud where they stood Wildcat Heir through his many years as Florida’s leading sire and currently stand Khozan, Florida’s leading sire since 2020. Fernung served as FTBOA president a maximum of three years from October 2016 through October 2019 and was named the 2004 Florida Farm Manager of the Year. Other returning FTBOA board members include T. Paul Bulmahn, Jerry Campbell, Marilyn Campbell, Laurine Fuller-Vargas, Mike Hall, and Mary Lightner. While the decision was a major victory for the Seminoles and the state, the panel also emphasized that questions about whether the compact violates the Florida constitutional amendment remain a matter for state courts to consider. “Whether it is otherwise lawful for a patron to place bets from non-tribal land within Florida may be a question for that state’s courts, but it is not the subject of this litigation and not for us to decide,” appeals-court Judge Robert Wilkins wrote in a 24-page opinion joined by Judges Karen Henderson and J. If a horse doesn’t meet all the criteria that indicate it should go to surgery, and the vet wants more information, he/ she can do a Fast Localized Abdominal Sonography of Horses (FLASH) exam, which is a focused abdominal ultrasound. “It can image several areas of the abdomen for particular signs of colic-related problems. This can be done in about five to 10 minutes, to gain a lot more information about what might be wrong,” Freckleton said. “I emphasize might be wrong. Because the horse’s abdomen is so big and deep that ultrasound cannot penetrate enough to reach every inch—except in a small foal. This means there is still a ‘black box’ in the center that we can’t see. The part we can see is around the outside edge, donut shaped— with a mystery portion in the middle. There isn’t a technology with large enough focus to look at every square inch and deep inside the horse’s barrel.” A human can be put through an MRI or CT scan but there are none big enough in a veterinary clinic (let alone in the veterinarian’s truck) to view the middle of the horse. “We are always working with an incomplete data set. The only way to look at the abdomen all the way through is surgery,” she said. Surgery isn’t needed in every colic case. “Some are just happy mysteries,” Freckleton continued. “We never know what caused the problem, but the mystery is no longer an issue because the discomfort has passed. Whatever was wrong resolved. It can be hard to be at peace with that—not knowing the cause—and I understand why owners might still want to know, but that’s the state of the technology we have today. We do have a lot more technology now than we had 10 years ago, or 30 years ago, and can do a better job of diagnosis.” If the horse has a problem in the center of the abdomen and it can’t be figured out on the farm or in a referral setting, colic surgery is the best option and is not the risk it was in the past. “We have come a long ways, in the past 25 years. Most horses survive the surgery and many can come back from it with full recovery,” Freckleton said. “It’s important to talk about this realistically, because not every colic surgery is the same. Owners need to talk with the surgeon regarding their expectations and what this horse will be able to do. Colic surgery can give you a fabulous athlete back again, or a mare that can still be bred.” This wasn’t always the case in earlier years. TFH 34 | THE FLORIDA HORSE | NOVEMBER 2023

DR. NORA GRENAGER Dr. Nora Grenager is an equine internal medicine specialist who has practiced and taught in several countries. She generally focuses on internal medicine cases in a University setting and recently filled in for another specialist at University College Dublin Veterinary Hospital, in Ireland. Grenager says the goal of a colic workup is to identify the area of the GI tract involved, whether or not surgery is indicated, and type of colic. Dr. Nora Grenager performs a Butterfly Ultrasound “We use a combination of history, physical exam findings, abdominal palpation per rectum, presence or absence of nasogastric reflux, ultrasound findings, bloodwork, abdominocentesis and fluid analysis, abdominal radiographs, gastroscopy, and clinician’s experience,” Grenager said. “Some of these diagnostics [such as lactate levels] help us Belly Trap determine how critically ill the horse is and help indicate a need for surgery while some [such as abdominal ultrasound] provide more specific information.” Field vets have increasingly more diagnostics available as technology advances. “Today many vets carry an ultrasound, lactate meter, SAA (Serum Amyloid A) reader, possibly even an Belly Trap-Abdimonialcentesis istat machine (stall-side lab work for electrolytes, lactate, glucose), and a gastroscope,” she said. Despite of all these diagnostics, a horse’s lack of response to appropriate level of analgesics/sedative is the number one indicator for need for colic surgery. “If a horse is repeatedly uncomfortable in spite of therapy, even when we don’t know the cause, the best option is to go in surgically and evaluate,” Grenager said. Every piece of diagnostic information the vet obtains may help diagnose the cause and severity of colic. “Unfortunately not all horses can undergo surgery. But it is still critical to know if the problem is going to resolve medically or requires surgery,” Grenager said. TFH

he Annual Meeting of the Members was held on Oct. 18 via Zoom. After the meeting a direct video link was sent out to all members. During the membership update portion of the meeting, we highlighted three programs for members: our mentoring program that partners subject matter experts with new members to our industry, our concierge service, and our new member ‘meet and greets’ at Florida tracks on Florida Sire Stakes days. Nov. 16 – Conservation Summit - Horse Farms Forever, Inc.® is hosting Carlton Ward Jr., a National Geographic Explorer and photographer, as the keynote speaker at the fourth annual Conservation Summit on Thurs., Nov. 16 from 5-7 p.m. at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company at 1701 SW 60th Avenue where he will share his experiences along the Florida Wildlife Corridor and how it ties in with farmland preservation. Additional speakers include Mallory Lykes Dimmitt, CEO of the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation; and Traci Deen, President/CEO of Conservation Florida. The Florida Wildlife Corridor is an existing, nearly contiguous network of land that stretches from the Panhandle to the Florida Keys over about 18 million acres. About half of the corridor is at risk of being developed. About 40% of Marion County is included as part of the Florida Wildlife Corridor and some is also in the Farmland Preservation Area (FPA). To purchase tickets, go to HorseFarmsForever.com. Dec. 2 – The Finals of the Florida Sire Stakes at Gulfstream Park – New members, we invite you to a meet and greet at the track. Live in North or Central Florida? FTBOA is working with the new high speed train Brightline to set up a discount from the Orlando station to the Aventura station, a 3 hour ride, that drops you 5 minutes from the track, with Uber service attached. The train runs 24-hours daily meaning you can take care of your farm, jump on the 10 a.m. and be to the track by 1 p.m., enjoy the races and be back home the same day. Eight or more guests can book facing seats and tables with the ALLABOARD discount.

UPCOMING DEADLINES Nov. 15 - The Nov. 15 Florida Sire Stakes deadline is for yearlings whose May 15 payment was not made. It is $500. Missing this yearling deadline means a $5,000 fee on January 15. Do not assume a horse you purchased in a sale or privately has had a payment made. Sales catalogs list horses who are FSS eligible at the time of the sale because the deadline had not passed yet, meaning a payment may still be due. Contact FTBOA at 352-629-2160 to check. The two-year-old payment deadline is Jan. 15. If missed, check for additional deadlines. TFH
