Hughes g Soars M

ichael Hughes, 17, topped a star-studded field on Feb. 10 in the $50,000 EMO Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis, at HITS Ocala IV. Hughes of Allendale, NJ had two rides in the main event and captured the win aboard Christina Fried’s Luxina. “It’s really exciting to win a Sunday grand prix like this,” said Hughes. “My horses jumped great and it was a pretty challenging track. There were so many great riders here today who I have looked up to over the years, so it’s great to be competing against them and to do so well.”

level,” said Ward, a two-time winner of the $1 Million Grand Prix in Saugerties, New York. “It’s brought recognition of sponsorships and is also showing people what an exciting sport show jumping can be at its highest levels.” The riders certainly brought their Sunday best and 14 riders produced clear first rounds to advance to the jump-off. With only 12 ribbons to pin, taking home a check on Sunday was not an easy feat. Peter Wylde was first to go in the jump-off aboard Lewin 5, owned by Societe Cirile de Necurie de Meautry, but fell victim to the challenges Petersen set in the jump-off, with two rails down for eight faults in a very fast time of 48.80 seconds. Wylde has had a historic career in the ring and was enthusiastic about qualifying for the Zoetis $1 Million Grand Prix this year for the first time. “The $1 million classes are huge,” he said. “They have had a tremendous impact on the sport. It’s raised a ton of interest and really set the bar at a new level for the United States.” Wylde plans to show this spring and summer at HITS-onthe-Hudson in Saugerties and has several horses who he believes will be prime contenders for the class. Sharn Wordley of Ocala, Florida was next to show aboard Filip Amram’s Quick Blue Z and rode clear to set the Great American Time to Beat at 57.73 seconds. His early lead would soon come to an end at the reins of Callan Solem of Glenmoore, Pennsylvania and VDL Wizard, owned by Horseshoe Trail Farms, LLC in a time of 50.66 seconds. Solem and Torlando Group’s VDL Torlando captured a win earlier in the week in the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis, and was hoping to keep a trend going – riders have gone back-to-back with grand prix wins each of the first three weeks of the Ocala circuit this year. It was not to be, however, as Andre Thieme and Seth Vallhonrat’s Catharina 9, took over the lead several trips later with a time of 50.12 seconds. King also posted a clear round riding Stateside Farm, LLC’s Campbell VDL to earn a spot in the ribbons, but was unable to catch Thieme. “It’s been great here in Ocala,” said King, who plans to head out west in several weeks to compete at the inaugural AIG Thermal Million. King spent many years on the west coast at the former HITS Indio Desert Circuit. “I look forward to being back west soon to compete again.” As for King’s take on the AIG Thermal Million and the Zoetis Million she said, “having two $1 million dollar classes in the United States is pretty unbelievable. I’m very grateful for

Michael Hughes and Luxina Capture the $50,000 EMO Grand Prix The course for the $50,000 spectacle was designed by world-renowned course designer Olaf Petersen, Sr. of Paehl, Germany. Petersen designed a visually stunning, but technical track for a superbly talented group of 35 horse and rider combinations, which included Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix winners Andre Thieme of Germany and Olympian McLain Ward of Brewster, New York. Also stacking the field was Olympian Peter Wylde and USA WEG Team rider Candice King, both hailing from Wellington, Florida. The allure of the all-new AIG Thermal $1 Million Grand Prix, presented by Lamborghini Newport Beach, in Thermal, California this March and the annual Zoetis $1 Million Grand Prix in Saugerties, New York has piqued the interest of the sport’s elite. Some of the world’s best found themselves at HITS Ocala in hopes of qualifying for not one, but two $1 million classes this year. “The million dollar classes have taken the sport to a new

Hughes is once again on path to making his second appearance in the Zoetis $1 Million Grand Prix this fall. “The Million last year was a really amazing experience for me,” said Hughes. “I’m really excited to show in the class again this year.” Christina Fried’s two horses, MacArthur and Luxina, have both shown they’re capable of grand prix victories with Hughes in the irons.

Tom [Struzzieri]’s support of show jumping in this country.” Second-to-last in the jump-off was Hughes, who, though still a junior, is definitely a rising star on the grand prix circuit. He has already proven himself with his success at Young Riders, the Junior Hunter Championships and the major Equitation Finals. Hughes was also 16th in the 2012 Pfizer Million. Hughes and Luxina skimmed nearly two seconds off the clock in a time of 48.70 to take over the lead and ultimately the win. “I knew I had to go pretty fast if I wanted to catch the time,” said Hughes. “The jump-off was difficult. The rollback to the triple bar was tough and the rollback past the gate to the oxer at the in-and-out had caught a few people. There was also a long bending line that you really needed to gallop to for the finish. You could have had a rail at any fence in this jump-off.”

$15,000 JPC EQUESTRIAN MARSHALL & STERLING CHILD/ADULT JUMPER CLASSIC Redfield Farm rider had great success in the $15,000 JPC Equestrian Marshall & Sterling Child/Adult Jumper Classic at HITS Ocala on Feb. 9. Morgan Ward of Redfield, New Jersey captured first place and Katherine Willekes of Sparta, New Jersey finished third. Ward won aboard Laurence Authier’s Bonita in a class that featured 51 starters. With 18 making it to the jump-off, it was an exciting finish as Ward bested the field with only fractions of a second separating the ribbons. Jill Donaldson, the owner and rider of Ophelia, took home the second place ribbon, while Willekes and her own mare Elsa captured the third place ribbon. Willekes has been a top competitor among Adult rider with her two mares, Elsa and Miss Kitty, taking home several Marshall & Sterling Championships with the latter. Both Ward and Willekes agree that the credit to their success belongs with Emil Spadone of Califon, New Jersey, the owner and trainer of Redfield Farm. Rounding out the top five was Katie Dawson and her own Gerry 79 in fourth, and Stefanie Cook with Lionsway Farm’s Zorro 182 in fifth. HCD

T wo S hachine Belle and INXS are quickly climbing the ranks of the Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final preliminary riding standings with another win in the $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix on Feb. 10 at HITS Ocala. Belle of Old Lyme, Connecticut and INXS, owned by her best friend Robin Swinderman of Morriston, Florida bested 45 over a course designed by Tucker Williams of Houston Texas. After the popularity of his courses in the previous week’s HITS and Devoucoux Hunter Prix on the all-new Outside Course at HITS Ocala, Williams again incorporated the use of the versatile bank into his course plan. “This week I used the elements in an entirely different fashion,” he said. “We jumped up the bank from the side table.” Williams will be designing at HITS Ocala and HITS Thermal this winter while showcasing his inventory of CCI Jumps at both shows. “We have seen great success so far with the newly constructed parts of the Outside Course. I included the bank ramps in both hunter prix this weekend and the competitors continue to rave about it,” added Williams. “You could see the confidence level of all 200 rounds being boosted as they achieved success over the new parts of the course.” Belle and INXS excelled on the new parts of the course and posted the high score in both rounds on the Sunday competition. They earned an 89 in the first round and captured a 90 in the second to clinch the win. Belle is hoping to qualify for the Diamond Mills Hunter Prix Final and she and Swinderman look forward to heading north for HITS Championship Weekend in Saugerties, New York this September. “He is always dependable,” said Belle of the 10-year-old Warmblood gelding whose main job, until now, was to carry Swinderman in the amateur-owner hunter divisions. “It’s great to see him performing so well with me, because he usually works his best with Robin. We switched things up a little on him this year, and it seems to be going really well.” After riding to a Devoucoux Hunter Prix win

for Shachine earlier in the season, Amanda Steege of Bedminster, New Jersey returned to the ribbons with a second-place finish. She and Susan Darragh’s Zidane boasted a two-round total of 177. Jennifer Alfano of Buffalo, New York piloted Sharon O’Neill’s Rose Hill to a total score of 175 and third. Rounding out the top five was Greg Crolick of Auburn Hills, Michigan on Adrienne Marciano’s Grey St in fourth with a 173, and Mary Lisa Leffler of Lincoln Park, New Jersey aboard Kiana Fiore’s Zivago in fifth with a 164. Devoucoux, the makers of fine French saddles, will continue to present weekly hunter prix, which represent the only way for hunter riders to punch their ticket to the prestigious Diamond Mills Hunter Prix Final during HITS Championship Weekend in Saugerties in September.

$1,500 HITS HUNTER PRIX Steege coached her way to another win when her student Charlene Graham rode to the blue in the $1,500 HITS Hunter Prix. The Feb. 9 win marked two weeks in a row at the top of the HITS Hunter Prix for Graham and her own Only You. The pair posted an 86 in the first round and an 84 in the second. Graham of Fairport, New York has her sights set on an appearance in the HITS $250,000 Hunter Prix Final, which will crown the best of 3’ riders during HITS Championship Weekend. allan Solem admits that she feels at home at HITS Ocala and she staged quite the homecoming on Feb 7 when she rode Torlando Group’s VDL Torlando to a win in the $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis. Solem of Glenmoore, Pennsylvania and VDL Torlando, of which she is part owner, topped 25 contenders over a course designed by Germany’s Olaf Petersen, Sr. The course, which included 13 obstacles, utilized a triple combination at fence six and a double at 11. “Olaf [Petersen] Sr.’s courses are always very challenging, so I was prepared. It’s really important to always have control on the landing over his tracks and, overall, I was really pleased with how my horses performed,” said Solem, who was also fifth with her own VDL Wizard. “I always feel like I’m part of a family when I show at HITS and I’m really happy that I get to keep coming back here each winter.”

Callan Solem aboard VDL Torlando 14 Horse Capital Digest • February 22, 2013

Out of Five off Week IV with Two Top-Five Finishes Petersen Sr. had five go clear in the first round – a perfect result for this level class at this point in the season, according to Solem. Joining her in the jump-off was Megan Wexler (Edrick) of Reddick, Florida with Cadence, owned by Procedures, Inc.; Adam Cramer of Pittstown, New Jersey on Equi-Sport, LLC’s Luke 54; and Lisa Goldman of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois aboard Mary Goldman’s Centurion B. Solem and VDL Torlando were second to go in the first round and returned first for the jump-off, setting the eventual winning time at 38.35 seconds. “I was lucky that Tracy Fenney didn’t jump off because she is terribly hard to beat with speed, but I knew that Lisa Goldman has seen a lot of success so far this year in Ocala, so my strategy was to really push it,” said Solem. “I was using a little more bridle than I usually do, so I was able to go faster and set up for the jumps quicker.” With the cushion of one more horse in the wings, Solem laid all her cards on the table, which proved to be the right move when her trip went unbeaten. “I am just crazy about this horse,” said Solem of the 13-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion that she started riding in 2006. “He’s really the first horse that I can call my own and it’s nice to have one that you can spoil and show on your own terms.” Wexler and Cadence were one of three double clear pairs and finished in second place with a time of 38.89 seconds – just fractions off Solem’s winning time. Cramer and Luke 54 were also double clear and posted a final time of 41.19 seconds for third. After going two-for-two in a break-through performance in last week’s grand prix at HITS Ocala, Goldman and Centurion B were on their way to the blue when a rail at the last fence came down. They finished with four faults in a time of 37.48 seconds for fourth. Solem and VDL Wizard rode to a time of 40.65 seconds, but picked up four faults to finish in fifth.

$2500 BROOK LEDGE OPEN WELCOME Ragan Roberts of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania piloted Quipit Group’s Quipit L.F. to the top of the $2,500 Brook Ledge Open Welcome on Feb. 6 to start off Week IV at HITS Ocala. They topped 19 over a 1.40m course. Santiago Medina was second with his own Monterrey, while David Tromp and Zidane Z, owned by David Trump

Show Stables, Inc. finished in third. Mary Lisa Leffler was fourth with Paulexi, LLC’s Quastor Van De Helle Z and Kyle Timm rounded out the top five with Platinum, owned by Apex Equestrian Center. HCD

Doug Russell celebrates more than 20 years designing courses for Horse Shows in the Sun By SHANNA BELLINGHAM

iders and trainers walk the Grand Prix ring analyzing the course, mentally calculating the distance, height and level of difficulty. If there’s a question on its design, they seek out the man in the cowboy hat. It’s not hard to find him. Doug Russell is usually roaming the ring, being just as critical on his work. According to Russell, there is always room for improvement. “This is a never quit learning job,” he said, watching his crew set up a course one early morning at Horse Shows in the Sun Ocala. “Every day that you think you know everything, you’re not even close.” Russell proudly lives by this motto in his career. The Texas native was born to be in the ring. As the son of John Russell, two-time Olympian for the equestrian team, it was only natural for him to enter the horse show world.

Russell began riding at the age of four. He followed in his father’s footsteps with a love for jumpers. As an adult, he rode for the equestrian team for four years. In 1995, Russell became a member of the Pan America team riding in great competitions around the world. It was his side job, however, during his years as a professional rider that ignited his passion. The Ocala resident credits his time riding with Steve and Debbie Stephens for teaching him the ins and outs of course design. Riding with the Stephens’s, Russell had taken a fall off a horse and had to have knee surgery. Unable to ride, Steve took him along to help him set up a course, Russell recalled. “If you know anything about Steve, there’s a passion for what he does that is incredible. He’s a master mind,” Russell said. “He’s the one that actually, kind of got me as passionate about it as I am from watching him.” In 1990, Russell obtained his course designing license through the United States Equestrian Federation. Russell explained his moment of truth came in 1992 from Tom Struzzieri, President and Chief Executive Officer of HITS, when he asked Russell to help him design at Horse Shows in the Sun Culpeper, which began his long relationship with the event. “I (had) done seven, eight or nine (courses); I was cocky about the whole thing,” he recalled. “I get to Culpeper and find out I’m doing a $50,000 (course). If anybody stuck their head out for me to get started, it was Tom. He just said, ‘Get on with; let’s do it.’” More than twenty years of designing courses, Russell is accredited for being one of the bests in the business.

He believes it’s his commitment to learning more and constantly changing his way of thinking that keeps him successful, he said. “What I look at in myself is, I don’t want to have a signature,” Russell explained. “I don’t want to have a course when somebody walks up to the gate and goes, ‘Ah, it looks like Doug Russell is doing it today.’ Every course that I do is thrown away at the end of it. I start new every time.” His attention to detail and concern for the equine competitor is a major focus, Russell said. He always keeps in mind the age and level of the horse whether designing a level zero or meter 40, careful to not damage the confidence of the horse. Changes and degrees of difficulty in the course layout should be done gradually; he said he has learned from his years of experience with horses. “As a rider, it’s fun to see horses jump well, first of all. And when I say that, that’s kind of a contradiction of what we do,” Russell said. “It’s fun to build a track where it’s more a test for the rider, and not so much a test for the horse.” “I find it when you test a horse – you can test a horse a little bit but when you test them too much, you might not like the answer you get. It’s a fine line.” Russell is still contracted with HITS and designing Grand Prix courses. He said the cohesion of everyone involved in the show makes it a nice environIt’s fun to ment to be a part of. “Every course designer helps build a track one another, the managers help where it’s more one another and that’s the a test for the beauty of it because this is a rider, and not so long circuit,” he said. “It’s an organized mess,” he much a test for added jokingly. the horse. Even with having to maintain —Doug Russell a varied schedule and traveling sometimes 41 weeks out of the year, there seems to be no slowing down in sight for Russell. Dedication to work is something he learned from his father, he said. The former Olympian still schools 40 horses every day, at the age of 93, Russell said. He once asked his father if he would ever retire. “’Why would I want to quit something I love doing,’” Russell said, quoting his father. “And I know what he means. I always wondered about that and now I know what he means. If horses are in your blood, they’re in your blood. Is it a sickness? Yes, it is,” Russell laughed. HCD

Doug Russell has more than 20 years with Horse Shows in the Sun, designing courses.

PRACTICALLY SPEAKING

Bahiagrass Pasture B

ahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge), is adapted to climatic conditions throughout Florida and can be grown on upland well-drained sands as well as the moist, poorly-drained flatwoods soils of peninsular Florida. In Florida, bahiagrass is used on more land area than any other single pasture species, covering an estimated 2.5 million acres. Most of this acreage is used for grazing with some hay, sod, and seed harvested from pastures. Bahiagrass is a warm-season grass that produces more grazing in the summer than winter. Due to the longer growing season, forage growth is more evenly distributed throughout the year in southern Florida (Orlando and south) than in northern Florida. In southern Florida, growth of bahiagrass pastures slows in October, and many pastures have very little forage after mid-December until the grass starts growing again in early March. In northern Florida, bahiagrass pastures are productive from April to November. Bahiagrass is popular with Florida farmers and ranchers because it: 1) tolerates a wider range of soil conditions than other improved grasses; 2) has the ability to produce moderate yields on soils of very low fertility; 3) is easily established from seed; 4) withstands close grazing; and 5) is relatively free from damaging insects (except for mole crickets) and diseases. Bahiagrass is an ideal general-use pasture grass. Once established it can withstand heavier grazing pressure than the other pasture grasses in common use. Therefore, horses are less likely to destroy a stand of bahiagrass when pastures are overstocked and grass production is inadequate to meet their needs. However, bahiagrass is not bulletproof and can be damaged by overstocking. Pensacola is the most widely grown cultivar. It was found growing in Pensacola, Florida in 1935 by UF/IFAS Escambia County Extension Agent, Ed Finlayson. Pensacola has long, narrow leaves, taller seed stalks, and it flowers earlier than other cultivars. Like other bahiagrasses, it has a fibrous root-system capable of growing to a depth of 7 feet or more. Pensacola has some cold tolerance, but top growth is killed by moderate frosts. In northern Florida more early-season and late-season production can be obtained from the Pensacola types than from other bahiagrass cultivars. Argentine is a selection that was introduced from Argentina in 1944. It has wider leaves, is not as cold tolerant as the Pensacola types, and does not make growth as early in the spring. It is popular in the sod trade because it puts up fewer seed heads later in the season than Pensacola. Edsel W. Rowan, UF/IFAS Marion County Extension Agent (1955 – 1986) was instrumental getting both Pensacola and Argentine established in Marion County. At seeding rates used for pastures, it may take two growing seasons to get a stand well-established. Once established, bahiagrass has an aggressive growth habit and forms a dense sod 18 Horse Capital Digest • February 22, 2013

which is relatively easy to maintain. Peak sod density usually occurs in the third year after seeding. For commercial sod production, the use of a higher seeding rate may allow you to obtain peak sod density more quickly. Stocking rate is about 2 to 2 ½ acres of pasture for each horse in a normal growing season. The same stocking rate would apply to a mare and foal until the baby is weaned, at which time the weanling will require its own pasture space. Stocking rate will vary to some degree, depending on location, type of grass, and size of the horse. In general, when the pasture area is less than one acre per horse, exercise becomes the main use of the pasture and its use as a source of feed becomes secondary. Avoid a situation where there are too many horses on too few acres for too long a period of time. This will result in destruction of the pasture grass and lead to encroachment of weeds. Soil testing should be used as a guide for applying lime. In southern Florida (Orlando and lower), lime to a pH of 5; in northern Florida, lime to a pH of 5.5. Bahiagrass pastures, once limed to the target pH, will require repeated liming depending on the source and amount of annual N (Nitrogen) application. Pasture may need to be limed again every 2 to 3 years if high rates (> 100 lb/A) of Nitrogen from ammonium sulfate are used annually, but about every 4 years if only 60 lb N (Nitrogen) per acre from ammonium nitrate is applied, yearly. Soil testing for pH every 3 - 4 years as a guide for lime application is essential. When establishing bahiagrass on new land that is very acid, try to apply and incorporate the lime 6 to 12 months before planting the bahiagrass so that the lime will have had sufficient time to neutralize the soil acidity. For established stands of bahiagrass, apply fertilizer in the early spring (February - March) to maximize much-needed spring growth. Bahiagrass is a very efficient forager and recovers nutrients from deeper in the soil profile than other popular forage grasses (up to 70% of N applied is recovered), so danger of leaching losses is low. Bahiagrass has a somewhat unique trait of accumulating nutrients in its stolons. It has been estimated that the stolons in a fully established mature stand of bahiagrass that is well-fertilized may contain a reserve of nutrients that will last 2 to 3 years. The show mounts comprised of an arsenal of top winning show horses: beautiful, elegant and suited for the job. Riders anxiously awaited the results of the horses that they would ride. Each rider is assigned a horse prior to the start of the show and will be acquainted only minutes prior to the class. Classes were broken into skill level and divided into sections to allow a small number of riders in the ring at a time. Most of the riders competed in one flat class and others added an over fences to their show bill. Riders were judged on equitation and the ability to handle their assigned mount. Awards were given for each class. Each ride tallied the teams against each other to vie for High Point Team and High Point Rider. At the conclusion of each show day, teams gathered around the board to hear the results. Loud cheers exalted the team of the day. Saturday’s High Point team- Host school University of Florida. STAFF PICK LA CUISINE FRENCH RESTAURANT 48 SW 1st Avenue, Ocala 34471

352-433-2570 “La Cuisine is the fine dining experience and romantic atmosphere of dining in Paris without the expense of a long flight. Chef Patrice Perron was born in the French capital known for the best of fine cooking, Lyon, so he pays tribute to his birthplace with every dish he serves. My favorite is the escargot in garlic butter!” – Tammy Gantt, Contributing Editor, Horse Capital Digest. From the local staff of HDC 36 Horse Capital Digest • February 22, 2013
