ore to Love. HITS Ocala is now a TEN week circuit, running from January 15March 24, 2014. This means there is now one more week to enjoy showing in the Florida sunshine and compete in qualifying classes for the HITS Championship September 6-7, 2014 in Saugerties, New York.

POST TIME STADIUM Construction began in September 2013 for the all new Post Time Stadium. The new stadium will host select special classes each week, including several grand prix, hunter prix, and jumper classics throughout the circuit, highlighted by the debut of the Great American $1 Million Grand Prix Monday, March 24. Post Time Stadium will be an exciting new addition to create a special atmosphere for spectators as well as exhibitors participating in the high level classes chosen for this arena.

THE GREAT AMERICAN MILLION

To be held on Monday, March 24, 2014, the Great American $1 Million Grand Prix completes the HITS Triple Crown of Show Jumping as the second jewel of the coveted series.

This will give Ocala competitors an opportunity to compete for the richest prize in show jumping and will serve as an exciting end to the 2014 Ocala Winter Circuit.

A NEW LOOK Hunter Ring 2 received a complete makeover for the 2014 season. It is now much larger, serving as a second “Main” Hunter Ring. The ring previously known as Hunter Ring 6 will become the schooling area for Hunter Rings 2 & 3, providing a great warm-up space for showing and practicing during the week. HCD

SHOPPING GALORE The Vendor Courtyard is being enlarged and enhanced to include all shops located on-site.

The added space and improved electric service will allow both vendors and shoppers to have a more enjoyable experience throughout the circuit. Still located in the same convenient area near the HITS Restaurant, there is sure to be something for everyone to enjoy at the Vendor Courtyard.

VIP TREATMENT The Overlook VIP Club will be open all ten weeks of the 2014 Ocala Winter Circuit. Located ringside, overlooking the Grand Prix Ring and Main Hunter Ring, the Overlook Club will serve both breakfast and lunch throughout the show circuit. Menus will be designed by the chefs of The Tavern at Diamond Mills in Saugerties, New York. Three forThree OCALA, F.L racy Fenney of Flower Mound, Tx., again jumped to a win with MTM Farm’s MTM Timon on Feb. 2 in the $50,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis, picking up her third grand prix victory of the 2014 HITS Ocala Winter Circuit.

MTM Timon, a 14-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, has been partner to Fenney for countless grand prix wins, as well as jumping at the highest tier of the sport. The pair has had three top-twenty finishes in the Zoetis $1 Million Grand Prix, in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Doug Russell of Ocala, Fla., designed a technical course that presented 13 obstacles and 16 jumping efforts to a field of 29. Scott Keach of Reddick, Fla., proved early that course could be conquered when he rode clear in the first trip of the order aboard Southern Cross’ Fedor. He was later joined by eight pairs, including Fenney, to stage a nine-horse jump-off.

The jump-off course proved to be a challenge with the first six riders picking up faults. Hugh Graham of Reddick, Fla., was first to ride clear, setting the Great American Time to Beat at 44.99 seconds with Julie Firestone’s Airborne. Fenney returned next with only one pair to ride behind her. She and MTM Timon shaved over one second off Graham’s time, stopping the clock in 43.01 seconds to move into the top spot and drop Graham to second. Jordan Coyne of New Port Richey, Fla., did her best to challenge and went clean in the irons of her own Lazaro with a time of 45.57 seconds, which was good enough for third.

Jared Petersen of Archer, Fla., piloted Derek Petersen’s Titus 2:11 to four faults and a time of 45.10 seconds in the jump-off to finish fourth. Keach and Fedor capped the top five with a four-fault jump-off round in 45.29 seconds.

Known for being notoriously hard to beat in the jump-off, Fenney is gearing up for the Great American $1 Million Grand Prix at the conclusion of the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit before heading north to jump at HITS-on-the-Hudson and make her fourth appearance in the coveted Zoetis $1 Million Grand Prix in September. With 76 seconds, the allowed first-round time, course designer Doug Russell of Ocala, Fla., challenged competitors by offering 12 obstacles with 14 jumping efforts. The competitors faced a combination of straight-forward verticals, oxers and tight turns, with a difficult left turn between fence seven, onward to eight. But, it was the triple combination at fence 10 a, b and c – a vertical-oxer-vertical that proved the trickiest part of the course. This combination produced the most faults with downed rails.

Five clean would return in the jump-off, taking on the clock and five fences, including a triple bar at number five with the jump-off time allowed set at 50 seconds.

MTM Timon, a 14-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding and a seasoned champion trained by Michael McCormick, owned by MTM Farm of Flower Mound, Texas and ridden by veteran two-time 2014 HITS Ocala grand prix winner, Tracy Fenney were the first to jump-off. Third place rider/trainer was hometown hero, Aaron Vale of Morriston, Florida aboard Bromance, owned by his Thinkslikeahorse. Fourth place went to Moet Walk, owned by Harlow Investment Enterprises, with trainer/rider David Beisel of Goshen, Ohio in the irons. Rounding out the field of five was Leviticus, owned by MTM Farm of Flower Mound, Texas, also trained by McCormick and ridden by Fenney.

Make no mistake, this day belonged to the Americanbred Belgian Warmblood Centurion B, bred by the everproud Allyn McCracken and partnered for ten years with the now, three-time HITS Ocala 2014 winning grand prix rider Lisa Goldman.

Goldman is trained by her mother Mary Goldman, both of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois.

Prix, Presented by Zoetis / Aaron Vale triumphs in $2,500 Brookledge Open Welcome When asked about the course and the horse, Lisa beamed. “He is just the best. He was a little feisty with the weather, which is out of character for him – usually he shows with a laid-back attitude,” she said. “The course wasn’t set too big for today’s conditions and the footing was very good, considering the rain. My horse jumped well and dug in after the combination. I was really watching the clock at 33 seconds.”

Acknowledging the class sponsor, Goldman admits that her 85-horse farm in Illinois is fueled by SmartPak. “After winning a lot of product during last year’s winter circuit, we started using it on our horses and couldn’t be happier with the results,” she said.

There will be more great grand prix action on Sunday as HITS III, the Ocala Premiere continues with the $50,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Zoetis. The excitement is starting to build for the first-ever Great American $1 Million Grand Prix.

The Great American Million will debut as the second jewel in the HITS Triple Crown of Show Jumping Monday, March 24 in the new Ocala Horse Properties Stadium.

$2,500 Brook Ledge Open Welcome Aaron Vale of Morriston, Florida put in an impressive performance aboard Gems Bond, owned by Thinkslikeahorse, taking the blue in the $2,500 Brook Ledge Open Welcome on Wednesday. Vale was also sixth on Thinkslikeahorse’s Bromance.

Lisa Goldman and Zacantos Z finished second for trainer/owner Mary Goldman of Hawthorn Woods Illinois, while rider/trainer Silvio Mazzoni of Leesburg, Virginia in the irons of Terra Hornero finished third for owner Jessie Mazzoni of Reddick, Florida. Goldman also finished fourth on Aslan, owned by Charity Judge of Arborvitae. Rounding out the field in fifth place was trainer/rider Derek Peterson, of Archer, Florida and Eddy Money for owner Jenny Booth of Magnolia, Texas.

Brook Ledge Horse Transportation will continue to present a weekly jumper class throughout the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit. Aside from the winner’s purse, Brook Ledge Open Welcome riders also compete for the Brook Ledge Rider Bonus, which includes a $1,500 shipping credit for the rider who accumulates the most points in those classes throughout the HITS Ocala circuit. by Hays Investment Corp. with Hunter Holloway of Topeka, Kansas in the irons. Jumping in the recently unveiled Ocala Horse Properties Stadium, the pair added another win for team Holloway bringing the total to three wins in the Devoucoux Hunter Prix at this circuit. Devise a Pasture Management Plan Now!

H

ello to all! Last week I had a consultation with a couple who had newly purchased a property with the intent of building a barn and developing the land into pasture. I applauded them for their interest in seeking proper education to help develop a pasture management plan right at the start. A pasture management plan is something that every farm owner and manager should consider implementing to maintain the long-term health of grass and soils. It’s an organized way to maintain a basic routine, achieve maximum forage productivity and manage weeds, as well as a smart way to most economically maximize and maintain pastures year-round. Not only does this benefit the horses, but forages utilize needed nutrients (like nitrogen and phosphorous), so strong pastures are also a great first defense against preventing excess nutrients from reaching the ground and surface waters. Each year, a few topics should always be included as part of a strong management plan.

WATER: Last year, Mother Nature generously provided rains in Florida; pastures generally welcome this needed staple. On rare occasion, however, soils can get too much moisture, reducing oxygen in the soils and hindering root and shoot growth. quickly take over a denuded pasture that has not been properly managed and once grass has been depleted, restoring the pasture can be both expensive and lengthy to repair. The golden rule is to completely rest pastures having 3 or fewer inches in height. Also, always mow pastures no lower than 5”. A 6” to 8” pasture cut is ideal.

FERTILIZATION: Proper fertilization is an important step, but accurate application first involves first doing routine soil testing to accurately determine soil makeup (fertilization/needed nutrient recommendations) and soil pH (this determines the lime amounts/types, if needed). Soils having baseline numbers established can be tested every two to three years. Fertilization is best utilized by the soil and grass using slow-release fertilizers, or by using smaller, more frequent applications. Remember, while fertilization can be an important step in grass health, it WON’T replace poor management.

SACRIFICE LOT: When needed, small areas that are completely denuded of any grass can actually be life savers for over-grazed pastures. They’re also ideal for animals getting limited caloric intake, as hay can be fed accurately, but it still allows animal’s time out of the stall. It is important that manure not be spread in these areas. They are meant to be sacrificed for animal activities in order to protect the remaining pastures. Picking the manure from these paddocks and managing runoff from these areas is essential; this enables the rest of the property to thrive and not create a serious problem on the farm for the ground and surface waters.

Equine Health Entry Requirements P

rotecting the health of your horse and other horses at HITS Ocala Winter Circuit is of the utmost importance to HITS. HITS has implemented Required Biosecurity Measures to decrease the risk of introduction and/or spread of contagious or infectious disease at its shows.

Horses must arrive only between the hours of 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily. Off-hours arrival must obtain permission from Show Management by calling 352-620-2275 24 hours prior to arrival.

UPON ARRIVAL TO HITS POST TIME FARM, ALL HORSES MUST HAVE AND PROVIDE:

Signed by the owner/agent/trainer verifying that the horse has been healthy with no sign of infectious disease and has not had a fever above 102°F within 72 hours (3 days) of arrival. Event Participation Declaration Form available in this prize list and at HitsShows.com.

A new Event Participation Declaration Form must be filed each time the horse enters the property. Horses stabled off the property that “ship-in” on a regular basis must comply with this requirement as well as additional requirements noted on the following pages. PROOF OF VACCINATION REQUIRED Via a signed statement from the attending veterinarian that the horse has been vaccinated against the following: Within 6 months (180 days) of each show: Equine Influenza Within 3 months (90 days) of each show: EHV 1 and EHV 4 If a vaccination will expire during one of the shows, the horse must receive its new vaccination prior to being issued a competition number for that show.

These documents must be filed in the Show Office before any competition numbers will be issued. In addition, random checks for Equine Health Requirements will occur. Be sure to keep a copy of all of your horse’s Equine Health Requirements in an easily accessible spot (in your tack room or tack trunk, truck or trailer) to ensure you can comply with this requirement. The results on all required papers must indicate the horses’ registered (show) name.

Any horse not accompanied by these documents will be directed to the Show Veterinarian to obtain the required documents and/or vaccinations, and/or will be placed in quarantined stabling until the proper documents are obtained. Any horse showing signs of fever/illness/stress is subject to examination by HITS Officials and/or the Show Veterinarian, who may at their sole discretion, place the horse in quarantined stabling or take further action if deemed necessary.
