Guest Editorial theme for Florida Tis heCamp Meeting 2016 not a random selection. We feel God inspired us with the words “Serve the City, Serve People, Serve the Church,” because He wants the Church to do more than it is accustomed to doing.

This may make some people uncomfortable, but we should never conclude that the Church was established only to make us happy and comfortable. It was established to serve!

Recently, two pastors approached me and literally implored me to become a volunteer for IDignity, an organization that serves disadvantaged citizens of the Central Florida region and beyond. IDignity is a not-for-profit organi-

zation “created to help the disadvantaged in Central Florida overcome the difficulties of obtaining the personal identification that is crucial to enabling them to become selfsufficient,” as cited on their web site.

In other words, IDignity leadership is comprised of professionals who volunteer their time to help obtain vital documents such as: birth certificates, marriage certificates, driver’s licenses, state-issued IDs, and other necessary documents for people who have never possessed them or may have lost them over time.

Consequently, once they obtain or retrieve these documents, these citizens can reintegrate themselves into society, find a job, and do everyday business transactions.

As soon as Tim Goff, ministerial field associate for the Central Florida district, introduced me to this organization, I researched their operation and became convinced that God had a place for me to help.

Now, our conference is partnering with IDignity to serve the city, the people, and the Church. As we volunteer to meet and serve people who

would not otherwise cross our paths, we gain the opportunity to demonstrate the love of Christ to them on a monthly basis.

As I stand in line on the third Thursday of every month and serve these dear children of God, I remember the words Jesus said to His disciples in Matthew 20:28, “…the Son of Man did not come to

be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Jesus also said, the least that we do unto one of these people in need, we do it unto Him. (Matthew 25:45) Collaborating with IDignity reminds me, and us, of three valuable lessons: 1. The Church does not have to reinvent the wheel. It can find and join other organizations that are already serving individuals. God uses different agencies to serve the needy.

2. The Church cannot,

and should not, isolate itself from the community and its needs. It is through service to others that the Church will reach the unsaved for Christ. From the Adventist Bible Commentary, Vol. 5, p. 513, “…the great truth [is] that genuine love for God reveals itself in love [and service] for God’s suffering children. True religion involves more than passive assent to dogmas.”

3. Acts of service, whether inside or outside of the Church, will not remain unnoticed.

As we serve others, we ourselves benefit. God rewards unselfish labor now and eventually. As scripture states, the seed that a man sows, that will he also reap.

(Galatians 6:7)

Pastor Receives CREATION Health Mission Award innovative leadership and dedication to improving the health status of our community,” said Ken Mattison, Florida Hospital Flagler CEO, as he presented the 2016 Mission Award at the CREATION Health Conference in Orlando.

Pastor of Palm Coast Church, Hayes’ involvement with CREATION Health began five years ago.

Seeking a method to bring hope and healing to the community as Jesus did, Hayes and his church members began praying for direction. He was invited to CREATION

Health training, and immediately felt this program was the answer to their prayers.

The first session was held in the church, and then meetings were moved to Florida Hospital Flagler. “We developed a partnership with the hospital,” says Hayes, “and we teamed with them in reaching the community.” The seminars run for eight weeks, and the church endeavors to hold two each year. Because of the increased need, the staff is considering a third session.

Now, 13 seminars and 700+ trainees later, Hayes is taking the CREATION Health program into the local public school system.

Through the efforts of a CREATION Health seminar assistant, school employees may now attend the seminars for free.

“Our goal is to follow in Jesus’ footsteps and become known for doing good,” says Hayes. “As a result, we see visitors in our church every Sabbath. We simply follow God’s command to reach out, then He fulfills His promise that our light will shine and His glory will be re-

vealed. (Isaiah 58) In our case, we started small, trusted God,

and are continually amazed at the doors He opens for us.”

Letting Our Lights Shine

grumbled that our Tinghey Sabbath morning singwas a disturbance when they were trying to catch up on sleep. Our “noise” was disturbing the peace. Other than this, we were not connecting with others. We were not letting our lights shine— only disturbing the peace.

Then, God spoke to us.

It was time to let our lights shine and share our music all the more. No, it would not be on Sabbath mornings when our neighbors were trying to sleep, but during the week.

We began going through our apartment building, door to door, singing Christian songs and passing out gospel leaflets. We not only did this in our apartment building, but in our community and surrounding areas.

Now, our church is no longer a light hid under a bushel. We are letting our lights shine, and even people who live far from our housechurch are coming to worship with us each Sabbath.

But this is not the end of my story, for I must add that

our neighbors now accept us. They come to our housechurch asking questions about Jesus and the Bible.

We are happy to report 30 people attending on Sabbath, two recent baptisms, and eight Bible studies.

Field Associate for Pastoral Ministries Rodolfo (Rudy) AlvirAbraham was voted Field Associate for Pastoral Ministries serving the South Florida area on January 24, 2016, by the Florida Conference Executive Committee. He previously served as Associate Youth Director for South Florida which he feels helped him get to know the wonderful people and territory in that part of our state.

Rodolfo began denominational work as a district pastor in Canada’s Ontario Conference. He then served as youth director and a pastor in Northeast Mexican Conference before joining Florida Conference.

Rodolfo’s wife, Alexandra Alvir, is a Florida Conference auditors assigned to the South Florida area. They have two children: Juan Jose (J.J.), 14, and Sarai, 13.

“I am looking forward to being a true servant of the pastors and their families in South Florida,” says Rudy.

Associate Publishing Director Anwar Bowes was voted Associate Publishing Director on December 8, 2015, by the Florida Conference Executive Committee. He has served as Assistant Publishing Director since February 2013. The Florida MagaBook program is his major responsibility.

In one aspect of his work, he will visit colleges and invite students to join the team and sell MagaBooks during the summer and the school year in order to earn scholarships toward furthering their education.

He will also be involved in training the students and working with them throughout the state of Florida Anwar graduated from Antillean Adventist University, Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, in December 2012, with a Bachelor of Science in nursing. He spent his vacations working with the MagaBook program as a student and then as a leader.

“The MagaBook program taught me the leadership skills necessary to help me with this new position,” says Anwar.

Anwar and his bride, Belinda, who is a nurse, were married on November 8, 2015.

Field Associate for Pastoral Ministries Javier Diaz was voted Field Associate for Pastoral Ministries for North Florida on May 7, 2015, by the Florida Conference Executive Committee. He comes to this position with three years of service as the senior pastor at Fort Myers Church. Javier previously served in Gulf States Conference as a pastor from January 1, 2003, until June 30, 2012, including two years at the seminary under their sponsorship.

Javier and Dinorah have been happily married for 16 years. She studied Business Administration at Andrews University.

“I am honored and humbled to serve in this new role,” says Javier. “I want to learn from pastors and at the same time help empower pastors in any way I can ‘to spread the gospel of the grace of God.’ (Acts 20:24) Through His grace and strength, collectively we will continue forward lifting up Jesus.”

Field Associate for Youth Ministries Angelo Grasso was voted Field Associate for Youth Ministries on October 22, 2015, by the Florida Conference Executive Committee.

This position expands his role to oversee public campus ministry across the conference. He will continue his role as chaplain of Adventist Campus Ministries (ACM) at University of Florida and remain based in Gainesville.

Angelo came to Florida nearly three years ago to work as an ACM chaplain at University of Florida. He also served as chairman of the University of Florida Campus Faith Cooperative. Previously, he served as an associate pastor at Boston Temple Church in Massachusetts and as an Adventist representative to the Harvard chaplains.

Angelo’s wife, Katherine, is a pediatric physician assistant. They have two children: Eliah, 10, and Emma, 7.

“I am grateful to God to have had the opportunity to minister on behalf of Adventist students attending the University of Florida,” says Angelo. “I look forward to expanding this important ministry across our territory.”

Staff Changes

Publishing Director and Health Ministries Director Les McCoy was voted Publishing Director and Health Ministries Director on December 8, 2015, by the Florida Conference Executive Committee.

Les was a pilot in the United States Air Force. He flew several evacuation missions in Saigon in 1975. He then became a soldier for the Lord, serving since 1982 as a literature evangelist and district leader in Carolina and New York Conferences. He continued this work when he came to Florida in 1987, and, most recently, he was Youth Publishing Director with the MagaBook program.

In his new responsibilities, Les has already provided health programs such as Mind Over Matter and Full Plate to benefit Conference employees.

He is married to Barbara McCoy who serves as a pastor at Forest Lake Church in Apopka. They have a daughter, Lauren, who recently graduated with engineering and math degrees.

“Publishing has been my whole life,” says Les. “It’s what God called me to do, and I’m very thankful and excited to continue with it in this new position.”

Associate Publishing Director Tim Merryman was voted Associate Publishing Director on October 22, 2015, by the Florida Conference Executive Committee. He has served as a full-time literature evangelist since January 2013.

Tim had previously served as an Associate Publishing Director from May 2003 to January 2013. Before that appointment, he was a fulltime literature evangelist in Georgia-Cumberland Conference from March 1993 to May 2003.

He sings bass at Tampa First Church and also sings in a quartet.

Tim’s wife of 42 years, Elvia, is a nurse at a hospital in Tampa. They have three adult children: Jason, Chief Operating Officer for a medical firm in Chattanooga, Tennessee; Elvin, sea captain in the Virgin Islands; and Florence, attorney for an oil company in Saudi Arabia.

“I believe that God’s blessings and success in my previous employment will be a blessing to further this great publishing ministry,” says Tim.

Field Associate for Lay Training and Leadership Development Alex Schlussler was voted Field Associate for Lay Training and Leadership Development for Pastoral Ministries on September 27, 2015, by the Florida Conference Executive Committee. His new position evolved through his involvement the past nine years with the Florida Conference Coach and Leadership Training Program.

Alex began pastoring in Colorado in 1992 and relocated to his home state of Florida in 2002 where he worked with Jewish ministries. From 2004 to 2010, he pastored Boynton Beach Church, and from 2010 to the present, he pastored Plantation Church.

Anjanette, his wife, was an Office Manager for a psychologist group before their move. They have three adult children: Aaron, a computer support technician; Chayla, a supermarket manager and parent of a three-year-old daughter Mia; and Joshua, a chef.

“Jesus called us to make disciples,” says Alex. “I believe the new training programs we are developing will create an environment to foster our growth as disciples and as disciplemakers to teach people how to bring Jesus into every area of their lives.”

Field Associate for Development and Planned Giving Dan Storkamp was voted Field Associate for Development and Planned Giving on December 8, 2015, by Florida Conference Executive Committee.

He was Director of the Planned Giving Department at Amazing Facts for the past eight years. Prior to that, he was the NEWSTART Director at Weimar Institute. “I have loved meeting and working with ministryminded Adventists throughout the United States,” says Dan. “I look forward to and focusing on relationships with the same type of folks in the lovely area of Florida.”

His wife, Deborah, is an emergency room nurse. They have three children: Olivia 13, Esmie 11, and Mari 9.

“I believe the Holy Spirit prompts people to support evangelism,” says Dan. “I have a passion for assisting people to do just that, perhaps because I see how much money is spent by Satan to counteract it.”
