ing acquaintances and making new friends.

Camp Meeting is also a great time for children and youth. I remember sensing the presence of the Holy Spirit in such a powerful way during Camp Meetings when I was a teenager. I am very thankful for the excellent and dedicated leaders in youth and children’s programming. Camp Meeting may be one of the high times of the year for our children as well as the rest of us.

Florida Conference has been challenged in recent years by financial pressures not

experienced in our lifetime. The Florida Conference Camp Meeting program has been affected by these financial exigencies.

Knowing the potential blessing of a great Camp Meeting program, I have personally prayed much about Camp Meeting over the past few years.

In recent months, it has seemed that God is leading us to move Camp Meeting to Camp Kulaqua where the facilities are designed to house more people in a retreat setting and where we may be able to rebuild Camp Meeting in a

more cost-effective way. I believe it will be a time of great blessing for all who attend.

I hope you will plan to attend the entire weekend—from Thursday night all the way until Sunday. We need these times of refreshing with the presence of the Lord. Living in uncertain times, we need to be encouraged and recharged.

The theme of this year’s Florida Conference Camp Meeting is Hope in Time of Crisis. The Adventist message has never been more relevant than it is today. The

spiritual strength from being at Camp Kulaqua will draw you close to Jesus and revive your experience.

Many have been praying several months for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit during this convocation. Join in praying for great weather, for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, for lives to be changed, and for the Lord to bring the people who He knows need to be there.

I am looking forward to seeing you.

Come and be reinvigorated with hope during a time of crisis.

Supplies Collected For Haiti Relief

F

lorida Conference has set up collection centers for members and nonmembers to contribute nonperishable supplies for Haiti earthquake relief. These centers are located in three parts of the State and managed by Florida Conference Adventist Community Services (ACS) Director Conrad Duncan.

At the Florida Conference location, alone, approximately $22,000 worth of needed items have already been received, packaged, and sent to Haiti. Florida Hospital and Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) are handling the general transpor-

tation of all donated items. In addition, the Conference has donated $50,000 to the relief efforts, and churches participated in the North American Division special offering for Haiti earthquake relief.

t’s been several weeks since Iquake the 7.0-magnitude earthdevastated the country of Haiti. The images of destroyed buildings and homes, desperate family members, and crying children have inundated our lives. We have seen suffering and pain in incredible ways.

Yet, through all of this tragedy, we have seen the best of humanity. Our hearts have been moved into action, and

our young people have not been silent. Incredible efforts have been made to bring relief and comfort to the needy and hurting in Haiti.

Several events have taken place to bring awareness to the needs, collect donations, and raise money for people of Haiti. One of these events was the Voces Unidas por Haiti (Voices United for Haiti) benefit concert sponsored by Prints of Hope. It was held January 30 at Greater Miami Adventist Academy.

This concert brought together some of Latin Christian music’s most sought-after artists such as: The WORSHIProject, Contagious, and Undivided. The evening was a collaborative effort with several nondenominational radio stations, churches, and businesses in South Florida.

and coming together for one purpose: to bring comfort to hurting people by raising more than $5,000 for Haiti. That’s a reason to praise God! Another large benefit concert was held February 20 in central Florida for the victims of Haiti’s earthquake. The Mighty To Save concert was sponsored by the young adults from Orlando Central Church’s Hispanic Ministries and held at the Lake Eola Amphitheater in downtown Orlando. Artists and special guests included: Chosen 4 Christ, Eli B, and Willie “The Ghetto Preacher” Ramos. The concert benefited Prints of Hope’s Dress-a-Child program, and attendees were asked to bring “Crocs” for people who have no shoes to wear.

In addition, nearly $2,000 was collected at the Hispanic Youth Ministries Convention in January at Camp Kulaqua,

High Springs, during a special offering on Sabbath morning. People were moved to give! Giving, serving, and meeting people’s needs are a significant part of young people’s lives, and there is nothing they cannot achieve when God is at the center.

This event in Haiti’s history has proven that true.

As I watched the Hope For Haiti telethon a couple of weeks ago, I was moved to tears to see artists, musicians, and celebrities give their time, money, and efforts to bring awareness to the suffering of people.

No one ever expects them to do good. Yet, in the times in which we live, when suffering is all around, the rocks do cry out. We have a calling.

We have a purpose. We are called to do for others. May we be the kind of people God uses to bring comfort, peace, and restoration to the people of this world.

2009 Evangelism Report

The Ripple Effect of D

uring the 2009 Year of Evangelism, Florida Conference saw more than 2,500 people join God’s family and seven mission groups, six companies, and two new churches organized. We saw a growing enthusiasm of God’s people, including more than 700 holistic small groups.

As a result, a ripple effect on discipleship is taking place:

• Families and children attended discipleship retreats and caught fire for evangelism, starting small groups with their friends and neighbors.

• Evangelists, pastors, lay pastors, lay evangelists and youth held more than 150 reaping meetings.

• Florida Conference administrators and staff members have conducted several meetings throughout the Conference, and Planned Giving and Trust Services personnel organized an overseas mission trip. More than 140 baptisms have resulted from Conference employee efforts.

• Young people participated in community outreach activities and shared the gospel at home, school, and the workplace.

Forest City Adventist School Twelve students were baptized at the Adventist Heritage Fair on October 25, 2009, by Pastor Jorge Figueroa, the school chaplain. Go and Make Disciples was the fair’s theme. Each student was presented an engraved Bible.

Sarasota Church Young people helped lead song service at meetings held

by Evangelist Lester Pratt. One individual who decided to become part of the family of God was Sheryl Melendez. Sheryl had been studying her Bible and reached the conclusion that Saturday was the Sabbath. She was looking for church fellowship when the handbill for the meetings came to her home.

She was baptized soon after into the Sarasota Church.

Repairer of the Breach Ministry Based on Isaiah 58:12, young people in this ministry have felt called to go to Orlando’s South Orange Blossom Trail in a part of town normally known for drug dealing, prostitution, and poverty. In this region, families that cannot afford a house or apartment live in one of many hotels.

This ministry started when a meeting in the Heritage Hotel began

creating a bond with families in the community. Four people have been baptized.

Light A merica— Dream To Reality Through this program, foreign student colporteurs come to the United States to do mission work and earn money for school.

Fifteen students have been working with churches in Miami and Orlando. During the last five months, they found more than 1,000 interests in Bible studies which resulted in 80 baptisms.

Student Literature Evangelists During Christmas break, 45 students dedicated their time to work as literature evangelists. Working with the East Pasco and St. Augustine Churches, these students found 100 interests for Bible studies.

Miami Temple Church Young adults coordinated evangelistic meetings in a more casual manner in the fellowship hall.

The evangelism cycle started with spiritual revival, followed by lay training and community outreach.

Since the program began, 17 people have been baptized.

Bradenton/Lakeland / Clearwater Churches Evangelists Bill and Sunshine Waters began the year in

Discipleship Bradenton where 50 people were baptized a year and a half prior. “God blessed us with another 30 baptisms,” says Bill.

Before the Lakeland meetings, Sunshine had a stroke. She told her husband, “Don’t cancel the Lakeland meetings. God wants us there.” She was right. More than 30 were baptized in Lakeland and another 20 were later baptized in Clearwater.

Miami Brazilian Church The congregation experienced a spiritual revival in 2009 and became very intentional in fulfilling their mission. Through small group ministries and visitation, several people in the community were contacted and eight people were baptized. “Another blessing was tithe return in our church,” says Pastor Alex Vaz. “It increased more than 70% compared to 2008 in spite of the economic crisis.”

Apostolic Approach To Church Planting Pastors Emilio de Leon and Jorge Rojas are working together with a goal to plant 15 new churches in two years in Broward County. In South Orlando, Pastors Hermes Tavera and Douglas Osorio started a master group.

When three or four groups are formed in

the same neighborhood, they start a new congregation.

Florida Conference President Mike Cauley says, “Pastor Osorio oversees nine congregations with five of them planted in the past two years. Fifty percent or more of the attendees at many of the new groups are not Adventists.”

Three groups meet in homes and two meet in storefronts. Their goal is to plant 15 churches in the south part of Orlando.

Northwest Miami Spanish Church Lay Pastor Rodny Aquino has developed 25 holistic small groups that constantly replicate themselves, and more than 75 people have been baptized. Two years ago, they started another congregation in North Miami which will begin holding a second church service in March to help with parking challenges.

Westchester Spanish Church Young leaders began Growth Groups in August 2008 with an army of youth going out to reach their friends. By October 2008, the one group had multiplied into six. At the September 2009 one-year anniversary party, the groups had grown to 12. Young leaders Dennysse (11) and Rebeca (13) started

their group in September 2009 with six Adventist girls. With an average attendance of 12 in this group, two have already been baptized, and an additional two are preparing for baptism.

In another group, an agnostic became a believer and invited his friends to meet with a group at his house. He now wants to become the group’s leader.

Once a month, these small groups meet in a combined setting. Four people have already been baptized and another four continue their studies.

Forest Lake Church Advent Hope, a group of young adults from Forest Lake Church, conducted an outreach project in Altamonte Springs where seven people were baptized.

Key West Mission Group Three years ago, the average attendance of members in Key West was eight. Today, a revitalized mission group praises God for an average attendance of 35 with an active youth group. In 2009, Pastor Tim Jemly welcomed 15 new members from baptism and profession of faith.

It is amazing to see thousands of committed disciples in Florida dedicated to discipling others in preparation for our Lord’s return.

Camp Meeting Offerings

In this year’s return to an old-time Camp Meeting, offerings will be called in three settings: Friday evening, Sabbath morning, and Sabbath evening. Sabbath morning is designated for Evangelism and the two evening offerings are designated for Camp Meeting expense.

Florida Conference is dedicated to providing a Camp Meeting atmosphere with careful cost management, but also inspirational on-site programming and plenty of space to enjoy fellowship.
