Northeast High School 5500 16th Street N. St. Petersburg, FL 33703 (727) 570-3138 2023-2024 Viking 1

Dear Viking Readers,

has been yet another successful year for the 2023-2024 Viking Log staff. lucky enough to gain many new faces who took the initiative and trained to themselves from novices to experts. Because of the sheer dedication of this we have crafted one of the most fun and creative Viking Logs to date, be more proud. This year, the theme we collectively decided on was "Long Story Short" which entailed telling a different story for every spread. The idea behind this demanded a more personal approach to every page; diving into individual stories allowed us to understand the student experience more than ever before. Through events like the Faculty Student Volleyball Game, Homecoming, the Talent Show, and many others, we did our best to take the reader on a journey through the unique perspectives of Northeast High School attendees. Not only was this a different take on the typical format, but we also took a less conventional path when creating the spread designs. Replicating the exact feeling of a scrapbook proved difficult, but it pushed our members to be innovative. Being an editor this year was an honor, and I am incredibly thankful for every person who worked to make this book as wonderful as it is. My position sometimes requires harsh criticism, but the staff members took every correction and incorporated them swiftly. Seeing the collective passion and interest in this yearbook shown by everyone involved made this experience that much more exciting to be a part of. I feel very lucky to have been granted such a motivated staff, and it definitely shows in this years edition of the Viking Log. We hope you enjoy!

Yours Truly, Devin Godfrey and the rest of the Viking team

What is your Coffee Cart order?

Northeast High School has allowed Brea's Coffee, known as the Coffee Cart, to set up camp in courtyard every Monday for years. This year, they expand their territory and permit other food trucks such as the Tikiz Shaved Ice & Ice Cream to settle in the school weekly. Students have shown their appreciation for this opportunity to reward themselves with a cold treat on a hot day. "My favorite thing about snow cones are that they are so refreshing... they are a fun treat to have at school when I need a pick me up" says Keegan Jefferis when asked why she enjoys the frozen snacks so much. The Tikiz truck has given everyone something to look forward to after a long Tuesday!

The Barbie movie that released this past summer was clearly meant to make an impact, but nobody could've predicted severity of the cultural wave it created. People from all over the globe came together with their friends and dressed up pink outfits to represent the iconic color scheme of Barbie herself. This internet trend went unprecedentedly viral many popular social media apps such as TikTok, Twitter, Instagram. It brought together groups of young women everywhere to celebrate their femininity and revel in their friendships with one another. The movie presented a beautiful representation of girlhood as well as a hilarious yet effective commentary on the seemingly male-centered society we in today.

Stanley cups have taken over Northeast High School!

Everybody wants one of these revolutionary vessels to keep themselves hydrated throughout the day. Stanley's have taken off on social media platforms like TikTok, and as a result are now widespread around the school. Northeast senior Keegan Jefferis (12) talks about why she enjoys having one of these water bottles, "It helps me to drink more water. I used to not drink water, and now I do during school." When asked what prompted her to buy one of them, she said, "Because they're cute and have a lot of different colors, and it helps me to stay hydrated." Stanley's have clearly made their mark on the student body; just take a look around!

There is a big variety of jobs open for students whether that would be part or full time. More common jobs students tend to work at include; Chick-fil-A, Target, Publix, or even Starbucks. A more uncommon job that you've probably never heard of is ProSun International.

ProSun is a tanning bed manufacturing comapany where Brayden Myers (12) creates and manufactures tanning beds to be sold to the public. He states, "I found this job through my friend Parker Fowler (12) and through the Academy of Finance." This helps him with the skill of "being able to manage a team and gain experience in the business world."

ORDER ON THE COURT!

Teachers vs. Students: The Ultimate Battle!

This years student faculty volleyball was a fun the students, even though there was some leniency on the faculty. According to Summer Latimer (11) "I found it fun to see how some of the teachers liked the same sport that I do, and thought it was fun to play against a different skill level than normal. It was definitely different playing against them, especially when some of the rules weren't applied to them." When also asked who her favorite teacher was to play against, she replied with Cady was definitely my favorite to play."

Who was your favorite teacher in the game?

Mrs. Holler stated that her favorite part of the game was Coach White's officiating, as well as the cheerleaders. It was her first time playing in the student faculty game.

Many friends don't have classes together, therefore lunch is an important time for them to socialize. There is so many places to sit during the thirty minute break, whether that is inside the cafeteria or hanging out in your favorite teachers class. Why do you save your money?

For the past five years, the Academy of Finance has been deeply involved with the Relay for Life event in Pinellas Park, Florida. Targeted towards cancer survivors, people walk to celebrate their family, friends, and others who were victimized by the terrible disease.

The participants may also be fighting said disease and are walking to celebrate their battle. As a volunteer, students at the event pass out food, set up and take down tents, set up luminaria, and participate in the many games and events held.

During this years event, themed around Taylor Swift's eras, students volunteered in many different ways, not just at the event itself. They volunteered after school to make friendship bracelets to hand out to survivors and families, encouraging positivity at the relay. Furthermore, they painted rocks with motivational sayings, quotes, and symbols, to celebrate life.

AOF students of all grade levels participate in the event, as it is required to meet their relationship with volunteering while celebrating life

Ride?

Automotive Academy takes the road to learning about how to prepare themselves for their future with vehicles.

What events have you been a part of because of the automotive program?

"I've been a part of all the open house's that we have done and a school wide event that we held one time where we brought people from Ferrari, Ford, and Dimmitt Mclearen to showcase the automotive program"- Julian Waters

What type of car did you have?

A ride through the automotive program may seem dawning as you think it's just about cars and the parts to each one, but this program offers way more. They offer experience. The Automotive Academy brings cars to our school and let's the students explore them freely. They even supplied students with multiple dealerships coming to our campus and talking to the students to ridge career opportunities and inform them of the possible outlets after high school. Not only do you get experience, but you are prepared for more.

The AVID program prepares for college!

Northeast High school is an AVID demonstration school with many students in the program. Every year, AVID students decorate teachers doors with colleges of the teachers choice. The students have to represent that college by researching facts that they then paste onto the teacher's door. Junior Laila Green (11) did this project on the University of Tampa. For this project she had to search the location, the state tuition, ACT scores, SAT scores, and available clubs. "I would say that i learned a lot from doing this project and i've gotten more knowledge about the University of Tampa." said Laila.

Take a Look in a Book!

Book Variety in English Classes Expand!

2023-2024 school year marks the return of "The Crucible" in English 2 course curriculum after a year hiatus. This book taking the place of a series of short stories is accompanied by Shakespeare's "Macbeth" and Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby". "The Crucible" is a twisted story focused on the inconsistent and extreme Salem Witch Trials from Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. Along with the new reading material, students got the opportunity to read aloud "Macbeth" in play form, with people being assigned roles per scene to aloud and play the part.

Innovation and Discovery

The Northeast Science Classes explore the mysteries of the universe!

The science teachers at Northeast work hard to make learning fun. Each teacher has interactive lessons, and labs to keep their students engaged in their lessons. They even used compasses to find points of interest around Northeast. For example the GPS coordinates for my classroom are fundamentally different than some other rooms. It was a lot of fun to watch my kids explore!"

MacKenzie returning to the game is awe-inspiring because of all the health challenges she faced during her junior year, but despite this she still was able to make a full recovery and continue to play in volleyball. Throwing Strikes

The bowling team stays motivated and consistent to perform their best while competing.

As the Bowling team competes during the Pinellas County Athletic Conference (PCAC), they continue to destroy their competition. The varsity girls team finished in fourth place while the varsity boys dominated in third. As they proceed to be a force to reckoned with, senior Amari Thepsombath-Smith claims that consistency is the reason they keep winning, as "bowling is all about repetition". They would continue to do just that.

As regions approached, our vikings were confident that they would destroy the competition and they sufficed. The girls crushed the other teams, ending up in third place in the region out of the twenty teams involved. Its safe to say that they'll continue to control the alley for many years to come.

Our JV squad is doing just that to prepare for the future. Not only did they compete in the county championship, but they won! It's certain that all these athletes will be a role model towards all future Northeast bowlers.

Celebrating Traditions!

The ACA honors their heritage

This year, the President of ACA, Leila Phrasikaysone (12), planned the events with the help of her uncle. He is the owner of the Saigon Market in St. Pete and gives support throughout the Vietnamese community. Also, the Laos community is very tight knit so her family helps with reaching out to event producers. While her and her family help coordinate the event, Leila talked to her other officers to decide what date would work best for the members.

the culture of ACA is great because not only is it fun, but also rewarding since its volunteer based.

Dazzling Dialect

Hear from our French Club Members!

Our french club is a biweekly diversion from the busy school week. After school, a diverse mix of students bring their friends to enjoy a little cultural exposure and play games (like Scrabble in French). Students can also play "petanque." (Also known as Boules) Petanque is a game where the player attempts to throw a metal ball towards a smaller wooden ball where the closest one wins. This game is played outside with Mr. Honien.

Riley Childs (11) describes French Club as "a good opportunity for students to learn important things in a fun way."

Johnny Sibley (11) joined "At first because my friend told me too, but then I ended up liking it and coming back for the other meetings."

Kemarion Tyson (9) loves it because "Every time I come into French club I learn something new. Whether that's because I'm listening to French tv shows or learning about the French Culture."

McAllyster Solomon(10) says "It creates a community for our students to participate in helping out the school, finding new sources for money, and creating new ideas." This year SGA decided on Vintage Hollywood as the homecoming theme and decorated hallways accordingly. They pick out all of the decorations for the dance and coordinate the whole dance. These decisions are made at the end of the school year, in preparation for the next. All students have the opportunity to join SGA and help make these decisions.
