Welcome
to Florida Atlantic University
This is an exciting time at Florida Atlantic, and a lot is happening. Your Hometown University is now ranked as one of the nation’s top 100 public universities by U.S. News & World Report and is one of only 13 universities in the country to hold Carnegie designations for top-tier research, student and graduate opportunities, and community engagement — a distinction that reflects who we are and who we serve. Additionally, nearly 70 of our faculty members are recognized among the world’s top 2% of scientists in the annual Stanford-Elsevier ranking. Serving as president since March 2025 has allowed me to lead this university with a deep sense of purpose and pride — and to see its full potential. I have witnessed faculty researchers pursue breakthroughs in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s treatment and tackle urgent environmental challenges. I have experienced the commitment of staff members, whose work — whether directly with students or behind the scenes — helps our Owls achieve their dreams. And I have seen students find their place at FAU, break barriers as first-generation graduates, and step confidently into careers in a rapidly changing world. Looking ahead, Florida Atlantic’s future will be shaped by “2031FAU: Where Tomorrow Begins,” our five-year strategic plan. It is a bold roadmap with a clear direction: to deliver a return on investment for every student; discover solutions that create healthier, safer, and more prosperous communities; power our rise by maximizing our strategic assets; and further elevate Florida Atlantic as a destination for talent, innovation, and economic growth. We are uniquely positioned to fulfill that promise, with ties to “Wall Street South,” our location between the Atlantic Ocean and the Everglades, a thriving life sciences ecosystem on the Brain Coast, and a quantum computing partnership with D-Wave, now headquartered in Boca Raton. Florida Atlantic is a special university in a special place, and I invite you to experience your Hometown University for yourself. See our students perform on the stage and compete on the field. Take in a lecture. Mentor them, hire them, and invest in the businesses they are launching. And learn about the innovative research taking shape right in your own backyard. Together, we are building the next chapter of Florida Atlantic’s story as the place where tomorrow truly begins.

From Our Founding ... In October 1964, President Lyndon Baines Johnson declared Florida Atlantic University officially open. For a sitting U.S. President to officiate the dedication of a new regional university was most unusual - but Florida Atlantic was no ordinary institution. President Johnson, far right, received the first honorary doctorate from Florida Atlantic, conferred by the university’s first president, Kenneth R. Williams, Ph.D., left.
Then ...
Secret Weapon that Won World War II Before it housed a Top 100 Public University, Florida Atlantic’s Boca Raton campus was a bustling military hub. The Boca Raton Army Air Field was one of the few radar training schools operated by the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. It was the first base to specialize in airborne radar, a technology that played a decisive role in the allied victory. 6 | FLORIDA ATL ANTIC UNIVERSITY
A Pioneer in Distance Learning Florida Atlantic aimed to be a “new kind of university,” one that would harness broadcast technology to “beam” classes to students wherever they might be.
... to Our Future As our community’s Hometown University, we recognize that Florida Alantic’s success is intertwined with that of South Florida and our state. To prepare our students for a rapidly changing world, our five-year strategic plan, “2031FAU: Where Tomorrow Begins,” commits to expanding real-world opportunities for learning, including internships, mentorships, and research opportunities, that will shape our graduates into the professionals, executives, public servants, and innovators who will lead our region tomorrow.

Where Breakthroughs Begin
Opening Doors to Brain Healing
In 2023, Delray Medical Center, in collaboration with Florida Atlantic and Insightec, became Florida’s first hospital to treat an Alzheimer’s patient using MRI-guided focused ultrasound. The technology temporarily opens the bloodbrain barrier, enabling therapies to reach affected brain regions and potentially improve treatment effectiveness.
In 2025, Florida Atlantic launched the world’s first fully integrated “bench-to-bedside” MRI and focused ultrasound platform. Thanks to a significant investment, including $1 million in federal funding, the newly expanded FAU NeuroInnovate Center will further accelerate breakthroughs in brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and move discoveries from the research lab “bench” to a patient’s “bedside” with unprecedented speed.
“Drug passage through the bloodbrain barrier is perhaps one of the greatest challenges in neurology. This treatment represents a significant advancement for potential drug delivery and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and other neurological disorders.” GREGG FIELDS, PH.D. VICE PRESIDENT FOR RESEARCH

Cheryl Krause-Parello, Ph.D., associate vice president for research, founded Canines Providing Assistance to Wounded Warriors (C-P.A.W.W.®) in 2013, a research initiative within the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing that pairs veterans with dogs to support mental well-being. The idea grew from witnessing the impact of human-canine interactions on her husband, a veteran and 9/11 first responder with PTSD. C-P.A.W.W. offers a non-pharmaceutical approach that effectively eases PTSD symptoms and helps veterans heal.
Making Chemotherapy More Tolerable Although chemotherapy is one of the most powerful treatments for cancer, it often causes motor and sensory side effects. Using a tiny roundworm to model chemotherapy-induced neurological damage, FAU researchers discovered two compounds that significantly reduced side effects and improved recovery. Sildenafil citrate, a pulmonary hypertension drug, and Resveramorph-3, a resveratrol-based compound, offer potential avenues for protecting patients’ nervous systems during treatment.

A Quantum Leap into the Future Florida’s 1
st
Florida Atlantic recently announced a landmark partnership with D-Wave Quantum Inc. that will bring an Advantage2 annealing quantum computer to campus. FAU will be the first university in Florida to host a quantum computer on site. The partnership announcement coincided with D-Wave establishing its new corporate headquarters at the Boca Raton Innovation Center, a historic site where the first personal computer was developed decades ago. Quantum computers are designed to solve complex problems much faster than standard computers — improving logistics, streamlining scheduling, accelerating discovery, and enhancing artificial intelligence applications.
Quantum Computing Can Improve: • Drug Discovery: Quantum computers can model molecules at the atomic level, speeding drug discovery and even designing treatments targeted to cancer cells with pinpoint precision. • Transportation: From delivery fleets to emergency evacuations, quantum systems can optimize complex routes in seconds instead of days. • Energy and Materials: Quantum computers can uncover new catalysts, stronger alloys, and more efficient batteries by simulating interactions that would overwhelm classical computers. • Finance and AI: By efficiently analyzing massive datasets, quantum computers can improve fraud detection, portfolio optimization, and AI model training.
