David Reese ambled toward the football field with a nervous kink in his stride.

He couldn’t rid himself of the anxious jitters that clouded his mind as he entered Neyland Stadium. The Knoxville, Tennessee, dwelling would carry a special meaning for the Florida middle linebacker’s season as the first field in nearly a year on which he’d compete in an orange and blue Gators uniform.

Reese had hoped to make sooner acquaintance with his comfortable oasis, but a highankle sprain suffered late in Florida’s 2018 fall camp left the junior watching from the sidelines of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium as his team played its first three games of the season.

The discomfort in his ankle was a painful reminder of his unfortunate circumstances as he endured the anguish of not competing alongside his defensive counterparts.

“I was sad,” Reese said. “But then I really got to reflect on the position I was in and the leadership opportunity that I had to reach out to the other guys.”

Finding that silver lining in the adversity is the part of Reese’s character that his teammates treasure. It’s something that manifested itself in his sophomore year, and it’s something the Gators missed in his absence.

A Natural Leader The typically reserved Reese

turns into someone unlike his usual self when he’s on the field.

He has no interest in mincing his words, second-guessing his instincts or fading into the background.

It seems natural that confidence pumps through his veins as if fueling him. His father, David Reese Sr., was a Division I lineman and high school football coach.

Reese always possessed the alpha mentality of a leader. He just needed the right time to realize it.

That moment came in 2017 just a week after Florida parted ways with then-head football coach Jim McElwain. All the turmoil that the team had undergone in the week leading up to a matchup with Missouri had made itself evident in the team’s lack of effort at Memorial Stadium.

Reese, then 19 years old, observed his teammates in the embarrassing 45-16 beating.

Amid the faces of defeat and self-pity, Reese went boldly to the media with a message for his team. One no one else would dare say.

This team cannot have another showing like the one it presented today, Reese contended.

Not as long as he’s around.

And from there, Reese gained notoriety as someone who won’t hesitate to hold other guys accountable.

“I just try to be a general. The linebackers are the quarterback of the defense,” he said. “I try to be vocal and make sure my guys are playing confident. If everybody is playing the wrong call, at least

we’re moving fast and on the same stage.”

So when the news came that Reese was injured so close to the start of the season, the Gators knew they’d be without a backbone of their defense.

“He’s huge. He’s the voice behind us,” said defensive coordinator Todd Grantham. “He knows everything, he knows all his calls.

He watches film, so what he says goes. He’s the leader pretty much of this defense.”

Something’s Missing The Gators longed for toughness and physicality with the absence of Reese’s commanding presence.

There was no clearer indicator of that than in their Week 2 game against Kentucky. The Wildcats came to Gainesville with the hopes of putting to rest a 31game winning streak in favor of Florida.

Defensive back ChaunceyGardner Johnson had done his best to rally team spirit ahead of the rivalry game by making a declaration.

“It’s 31, right? It’ll be 32 after Saturday,” the junior matter-offactly stated.

The premature promise was not what the Gators were looking for to fill the void left by Reese’s injury, and Gardner was forced to face those consequences in Florida’s 27-16 loss.

The Gators found it nearly impossible to stop Kentucky running back Benny Snell and quarterback Terry Wilson, who combined for 285 rushing yards.

Hunched over her bed, still exhausted from labor, Javiera Rudolph graded papers at 2 a.m. awaiting her newborn to wake up again at any minute.

Moments ago, she had nursed her son, Julián, born only two days before. Yet the new mother kept grading papers, flooded with anxiety, stress and adrenaline.

She had grown accustomed to her late night schedule over the last eight months, though.

She worked until midnight most nights until she had no energy and crashes, only getting a few hours of sleep.

Rudolph, 27, could not afford to take the six weeks of unpaid maternity leave she was allowed because as a UF biology graduate senior she is already tight on money, she said.

In Chile, her home country, mothers are given a non-negotiable six months of paid maternity leave, she said.

Student-moms at UF feel a lack of support from the university, Rudolph said. Without Gator Moms, a student-government funded organization created to support students with families, many of these women would not have a place to turn to for understanding.

Rudolph is one of 531 graduate females and 420 undergraduate females who juggle student and parental responsibilities, according to UF Office for Student Financial Affairs 2016-2017 data. Graduate students at UF currently do not receive paid maternity leave while some of UF’s peers, such as the University of Michigan and University of California Los Angeles, do offer paid leave.

Three UF fraternities face possible suspensions as the University Police investigates allegations of hazing.

The UF chapters of Pi Kappa Phi, Alpha Epsilon Pi and Chi Phi have been banned from hosting events with new members since late September, according to letters sent by Dean of Students Heather White.

“I am highly concerned by the nature of these accusations and their potential impact on student safety,” White wrote in the letters.

White sent Chi Phi the letter Sept. 21 and sent letters to Alpha Epsilon Pi and Pi Kappa Phi three days later. The fraternities are under a Limited Activity Directive, which restricts the organizations’ actions, according to the letters.

The Dean of Students Office provided UPD information about the hazing allegations late last month, said UPD Lt. Jeff Moran.

Police are interviewing potential victims and witnesses, and documents related to the allegations are unavailable until the investigations end, Moran said.

White will send the fraternities another letter once investigations are over, but it is unclear when that will be, Moran said.

Pi Kappa Phi is cooperating with the investigation, the UF chapter president Matthew Farah wrote in an email.

UF Alpha Epsilon Pi chapter president Connor Haffey and the Chi Phi chapter president Zachary Montaner could not immediately be reached for comment.

City to hold ribbon-cutting for UF graduate detained in Israel newly renovated Hogtown

After almost a year of construction, Gainesville will soon celebrate the renovations at Hogtown Creek Headwaters Nature Park.

The city is hosting a ribbon-cutting to celebrate the park’s improvements.

The ceremony will be at 10 a.m. on Oct. 12, said Chip Skinner, a city spokesperson. The park is already open to the public, but the ceremony will be an opportunity for the community to participate in a guided nature walk and see demonstrations of the new equipment.

“It will allow us the opportunity to interact with people and share future plans for the park,” he said.

The city is renovating the park, at 1500 NW 45th Ave., in three phases, Skinner said. The first two phases

are complete; they involved repaving the parking lot and adding new recreational amenities like a zip line, oval swings and fitness equipment.

The third phase will transform the old farmhouse into a museum. The first two phases cost $314,235 in total.

The renovations were scheduled to be completed by November 2017, said Linda Demetropoulos, the nature operations manager of Gainesville’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs nature operations manager, in August 2017.

The project was delayed due to Hurricane Irma, Skinner said.

Gainesville resident Nicole Nesberg, 45, has made visiting the park part of her weekly routine. Her 6-yearold boy loves the new zip line while her 5-year-old boy enjoys the outdoor musical instruments, she said.

Lara Alqasem prepared to start a new semester in Israel.

Her plans, however, were put to a halt when she was detained and threatened with deportation at the Ben Gurion Airport in Israel, her former coworker Grace Chun, 22, said.

Alqasem graduated from UF in May with a bachelor’s degree in international studies and Arabic and was accepted into a master’s program at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Chun, a 2018 UF psychology graduate, said. Two months before Alqasem went to Israel, she applied for a student visa at the Consulate General of Israel in Miami.

The Consulate General confirmed the visa was issued, according to the Miami Herald. Lior Haiat, the consul general of Israel in Miami, said once the Israeli government knew Alqasem, 22, was involved in “anti-Israel (and anti-Semitic) activities,” she was denied entry.

Alqasem was the president of the UF Students for Justice in Palestine and protested Israeli companies in the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, said Cody O’Rourke, the communications director for Holy Land Trust.

Chun said she wasn’t surprised Alqasem was detained. Alqasem visited Israel before and had previously been detained, but was never threatened to be deported, Chun said.

Alqasem, who is of Palestinian descent, is outspoken about the Israeli government’s oppression towards Palestinians, Chun said.

Chun contacted Alqasem through WhatsApp where Alqasem told Chun she appealed the decision to deport her, got access to a lawyer and had a hearing with a judge who sided with her.

She will be detained until Sunday morning until she hears back from the Minister of Interior.

Even if the minister sides with Alqasem, the decision could be appealed, Chun said.

UF to Israel, an Israeli student group, said it was aware of Alqasem’s situation, but declined to comment because it involves foreign policy.

Caroline Gillis, a former classmate of Alqasem, knew she would fight to study at the university.

She does not carry anti-Semitic feelings, Gillis, a 2016 UF Middle Eastern studies graduate said.

County and city close deal on $4 million conservation land THE COUNTY HAS SEVERAL OTHER PURCHASES ON THE HORIZON.

Chip Skinner has always kept an eye on the Weiss property.

The land stretches between 43rd Street and Route 441, right next to his neighborhood, the city of Gainesville spokesperson said.

His neighborhood already receives runoff during heavy rains, but Skinner and his homeowners association were aware that any residential development on the nearby property could worsen the situation.

On Sept. 24, Skinner and his neighbors were able to let their worries go. Together with the Alachua Conservation Trust, Gainesville bought the Weiss property, now known as Four Creeks Preserve, as conservation land, Skinner said.

The land acquisition collectively cost more than $4 million, with Gainesville paying $1.5 million, Skinner said. The city’s contribution came from its tree mitigation fund, which developers pay into when they remove trees during projects.

“We’re a nature-oriented community,” Skinner said. “It’s important that the city participates in saving these tracks of land.”

The recent acquisition comes after almost 15 years of different agencies pursuing the property, said Tom Kay, the executive director the Alachua Conservation Trust. The

headwaters of four creeks — Blues, Hogtown, Turkey and Possum — lay within the 715 acres of the aptly named Four Creeks Preserve.

“The first word that comes to mind is relief,” Kay said. “This is one of those projects where there was tremendous community support for seeing it conserved. It was really important to try to conserve the headwaters of that many creeks that flow through Gainesville.”

Not only will conserving the property protect the water system and create a buffer zone in cases of surging waters and flooding during storms, but it could also create a wildlife corridor for the animals already present, Kay said.

Although discussions with the land owner, Arthur Weiss, and his representative started before the Wild Spaces and Public Places tax was passed, the acquisition was not possible until those funds began to roll in, Kay said. The funding from the half-cent sales tax, which goes toward acquiring conservation land and improving parks in Alachua County, provided the $2.8 million the Alachua Conservation Trust contributed to the purchase of the preserve.

“It was a pretty big first victory for Wild Spaces and Public Places,” Kay said.

Ownership of Four Creeks Preserve is split between the county and Gainesville according to the percentage that each paid for the property, Kay said. The county plans to conduct restoration of the land to make runoff less likely.

Soon, students may no longer have to bring pencils to the LSAT testing room.

The pre-law exam will transition from paper-and-pencil to an online format in July, said Kellye Testy, the president and CEO of the Law School Admission Council. The council made the decision Wednesday to change the way the exam is given.

“The structure of the test sections and test questions will not be any different than the paper-and-pencil LSAT,” Testy said. “We don’t think test takers will have any problems moving to the digital version.”

UF is currently the largest source of law school applicants in the U.S. Last year, 635 UF undergraduates applied for law school, said Grant Keener, the interim assistant dean of admissions in the UF Levin College of Law. The change in the exam will be beneficial for students, Keener said.

“I think the transition is helpful,” he said. “It is a more efficient way for students to take the exam and receive their scores faster.”

Testy said the council is hoping the transition will benefit test takers

and schools because scores would be released faster and they could offer additional test dates.

“The digital LSAT will maintain the quality and predictive value that the LSAT is known for while providing a modern delivery system that enhances security, access and ease of use,” Testy said.

Current students preparing for the LSAT have anticipated the traditional paper-and-pencil method, which is why the exam will go through a trial process in July, Testy said. Half of the test takers will get a paper-and-pencil version and others will receive the digital format. The scores will gauge if students perform equally on both exams and will help make adjustments for future digital tests.

To ease the transition, students who take the July exam can see their scores before they decide to cancel sending them to their law schools of choice, Testy said. Students who decide to cancel their July score can choose to retake the exam until April 2020 for free.

Lauren Paul said she is optimistic about the change. The 21-year-old UF political science junior is currently preparing for the November LSAT. “I am glad that this change will allow students to receive their scores back faster,” Paul said. “It seems much more efficient.”

Carlee Brenneman didn’t mind the heat.

Although the chiropractor and Gator fan did find Ben Hill Griffin Stadium exceptionally scorching Sept. 15, she made the best of it.

“Personally, I found an excuse to pull my shirt up by having the face painters paint ‘Go Gators’ on my eight-month pregnant belly,” said Brenneman. “It did help.”

At an average high temperature of 93.3 degrees, this September was the hottest ever recorded in Gainesville. The typical average high temperature for the month is 87.4 degrees, said Nate McGinnis, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jacksonville.

“It’s the same thing in the summer months, but this time it happened in September,” said McGinnis. “You have really warm air coming from the South and you really don’t get that cold air relief from the northwest.”

Hurricane Florence is partially to blame for the unseasonal heat, McGinnis said.

Gainesville’s proximity to the storm and the storm’s motion warmed up the atmosphere leading to higher-than-normal temperatures in mid-September.

The hottest day of the month

was Sept. 15, McGinnis said.

Gator football fans might better remember this as the day they bathed in sweat while cheering on the Gators as they took on the Colorado State Rams in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

Jeff Taylor, the assistant chief of Alachua County Fire Rescue, said the Colorado State game tied for the hottest game ever played at the stadium. It tied with the Sept.

11, 2010 game when UF played the University of South Florida.

The temperature inside the stadium at kickoff was 102 degrees, Taylor said. The heat index, which accounts for humidity, put the temperature at 116 degrees. The temperature outside the stadium was 95 degrees, making it the hottest afternoon of the month.

During the game, 253 patients were seen in the first-aid rooms around the stadium, although fire rescue did not record how many were heat-related. The University Athletic Association also set up cooling buses, which were visited by 2,700 fans during the game.

ber of people visit first aid and the cooling buses this season, Taylor said.

Each game is evaluated individually to see how fire rescue and the athletic association are going to handle the crowd and heat, Taylor said.

This year, a new system was put in place to encourage hydration, he said. In addition to the idle buses that have water and the first-aid stations that provide water and Gatorade, there are now hydration stations around the stadium where fans can get free water.

Fans can also snag free sunscreen at all guest service kiosks and bring in empty clear water bottles to fill inside.

September started off as a warm month for all of the east coast. While Gainesville residents might be ready for fall weather, McGinnis said Gainesville will not get much relief any time soon.

“This whole side of the country is going to remain above average,” McGinnis said. “For at least the first two weeks of October, we’re going to hold onto this summer-like pattern.”

Man hides drugs in chapstick tube, butt, police said

GPD: Man crashed scooter after police chase

Police arrested Davis and drove him to the Alachua County Jail. Before going inside, Davis told police he had molly, a street drug associated with ecstasy, hidden in his butt, authorities said.

Davis removed a clear plastic bag carrying 6.6 grams of ecstasy from his rear end, the report said.

Davis was charged with possessing synthetic drugs to sell, possessing drugs without a prescription and possessing drug equipment. He is held in jail in lieu of a $32,000 bond.

On his way to jail Wednesday night, a Gainesville man told police about the drugs he was hiding in his butt, Gainesville Police said.

Charlie Vernon Davis, 42, of Gainesville, was accused of concealing less than a gram of crack cocaine in a chapstick tube and a bag of ecstasy up his butt, according to an arrest report.

An officer was driving on the 1600 block of NW Fourth St. when he noticed the blue Toyota sedan in front of him did not have working brake lights, the report said. Police stopped the car on the 300 block of NW 19th Ave, near the Sidney Lanier Center.

Davis was rocking back and forth in his seat and sweating profusely, police said.

While most scooter drivers typically just slow down traffic, one man took police on a chase with one.

Skylar D. Green, 31, of Archer, was accused of leading officers on a chase while riding down the sidewalk of Southwest 34th Street before ultimately crashing the scooter behind a Circle K Wednesday afternoon, according to an arrest report.

An officer originally spotted Green behind Earth Fare, at 3045 SW 34th St., when he turned to avoid being

stopped, the report said. He drove toward the convenience store, at 3525 SW 34th St., where he was spotted riding on the sidewalk to avoid police.

He crashed the scooter and then jumped over a retention pond fence, but police dogs were able to catch him, authorities said.

Green later told police he had bought the scooter from someone for $200 cash, but it did not come with a key, the report said. Green also did not have a driver’s license.

He was charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle and driving without a license, officials said. He is being held in the Alachua County Jail in lieu of a $4,000 bond. @paigexfry pfry@alligator.org

Two Miami men accused of stuffing 91 fraudulent credit cards in a rental car headrest spent Tuesday night in the Alachua County Jail, Gainesville Police said.

Yasmany Veloz Miranda, 31, and Lizuan Miranda Monteagudo, 26, were arrested Tuesday afternoon after a traffic stop turned into car search, according to arrest reports.

Miranda Monteagudo was driving on Interstate 75 with Veloz Miranda in the front passenger seat when an officer pulled them over for following a car too closely, the report said. Monteagudo gave police permission to search the car.

Police found a computer bag on the passenger side of the car with a laptop, USB drives, a card skimmer and three keys, two of which appeared to be gas pump keys, the report said.

A total of 91 credit cards were bundled into three groups and stuffed inside the driver’s seat headrest, police said.

vice that can transfer information from one credit card to another, were stuffed in the front passenger seat headrest.

The two men cut out some of the foam in the headrests to hide the credit cards and devices, police said.

Some of the cards had Monteagudo’s name embossed on the front and PIN numbers written on the back in marker.

The account numbers connected to the cards’ magnetic stripes were different than the numbers embossed on the front, police said.

Monteagudo is listed as the registered agent of MSC Sales Inc. in Miami,

according to the Florida Department of State business records. The home address listed on Monteagudo’s arrest report matches the corporation’s registered address.

Both men are charged with trafficking over 50 fake credit cards, using a skimmer to defraud, using a re-encoder to defraud and swindling to obtain property.

They are held in jail in lieu of $850,000 bonds.

“This is Ground Control to Major Tom,” David Bowie sings to you through your earbuds. As you peer through the tinted window of an RTS bus, the twinkling lights floating around campus buildings seem a thousand miles away. The constellation of lamps hovering above Turlington Plaza shine like lighthouses welcoming early morning visitors like yourself. Campus feels as if it were Mars, desolate and complete with the red brick terrain. You are the only passenger in the large tin can of a bus rolling slowly up Newell Drive. You can barely see anything in the dark, but the bus calls out the stops autonomously and seems to know which way to go. The air is cool and inviting as the bus slows to a stop and the doors part to let you out. Standing in the silence, you see UF in a new light, quarantined from the usual activity and bustle — in a cosmic bubble without distraction or noise. Soon campus will wake, but for now, the stars still twinkle in the soft daylight peeking over the horizon. The obelisk of Century Tower looms like a dark monument from another world.

The sun returns and the sky brightens. The lonely, tranquil scene is gone but replaced with familiar faces. Brightness illuminates the first organization to stake out a table in Turlington. They unfurl a welcoming banner that reads:

We don’t really know what to make of Kanye West. If you saw his last TMZ interview Tuesday, you also know he is a strange guy. He channels the “energy” of people sitting near him. In a style typical of Kanye, he tweeted something as puzzling as his personality the other day: “Reaching out to Colin Kaepernick. I would like you to speak with the president to tell him your experience directly. Let’s have a dialogue not a diatribe.”

We are faced now with the great dilemma of whether we should award Kanye darts or laurels. On the one hand, Kanye’s tweet sounded diplomatic. If you give Kanye the benefit of the doubt, the tweet can be read as the beginnings of a compromise — stimulating productive conversation between Kaepernick and President Donald Trump, who seems to hate him. But on the other hand, the tweet is phrased such that it makes Kaepernick out to be the bad guy, insinuating that it is Kaepernick who is unwilling to have a dialogue.

Kanye got it wrong. Trump is the one throwing around the venom and invective. Of kneeling NFL players like Kaepernick, Trump did not have nice words to offer. “Get that son of a b---- off the field! You’re fired!” he yelled at a rally.

So we award a confused dart to Kanye and squint suspiciously while we do it. Why, Kanye? Why would you do something so controversial yet not very brave? Take the MAGA hat off. Trust us, we are doing you a favor. The Trump presidency is imploding and we do not want you going down with the ship.

A New York Times investigation revealed that the president received millions through shady business practices from his parents. Why is every new scandal not surprising? Trump gets a permanent, standing dart from us. We have a feeling there are more financial skeletons hidden in his closet.

In more serious news this week, Thursday was National Taco Day. What was supposed to be a celebration took a dark turn as hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, of tacos were murdered in cold blood. A laurel to tacos everywhere for their sacrifice. A laurel to corn tortillas. You are vastly superior to flour, and we all know it deep down. A laurel to refried beans, the most underrated side dish.

That being said, how do we define what the average American looks like? The U.S. has one of the worst wealth disparities in the world. If the uber rich are no longer qualified to give their opinions on the state of the country, does that mean we exclude those on the opposite end of the spectrum — the extremely poor?

I’m not going to be that person who says that celebrities are just like the rest of us.

I’m simply challenging the notion that there is a “rest of us” in the first place. If the U.S. is full of people who live drastically different lives, who’s to say that one opinion is more valid than the next? Just as those naysayers have every right to denounce celebrities’ political opinions on social media, celebrities have the right to announce them — and their opinion should be just as valued as your neighbor’s, your colleague’s and your own.

Despite those who say how “perfectly fine” it should be, Benjamin said.

The UF computer science sophomore felt uncomfortable by other students’ gawking faces when her son, Princeton, toddled around and made loud noises at a student organization meeting, she said. So much so that she left early.

The loneliness she felt then is common for student-moms like herself, she said.

Her one close friend is also a student-mom because non-parents cannot relate to her life.

Benjamin works 20 hours a week in the Information Technology Department and is the vice president of Gator Moms.

Support is the most important thing that student-moms need and is lacking at UF, Benjamin said, even with the club. When she first went to a Ph.D. Moms meeting, now renamed Gator Moms, she was told it may not be the right group for her as an undergraduate student.

There were no other groups for students with families, she said.

“They say they (UF) have resources, but the resources are like the butterfly museum,” she said. “Like actual help, actual resources. That’s something that I’d like to see, but it’s so far from reality.”

At 3 months old, Princeton became sick with the flu. When he recovered, the daycare Benjamin originally planned to enroll him in unexpectedly gave his spot away, she said. To take care of him, she missed a month of class and had to withdraw from the Spring semester.

She can see herself falling back into that pattern. Every time she walks into an exam unprepared, it is because she has not had time to study, she said.

“Financially, emotionally, physically, I am so tired,” Benjamin said. “I’m hanging on by a thread, hoping that I keep it together this semester.”

Katie Tanner, the UMatter, We Care associate director for student success, said a medical withdrawal is one of the most important resources for students with pregnancy-related issues. It provides tuition reimbursement and flexibility in retaking failed courses.

There is a lack of conversation on campus about ways to support non-traditional students, Tanner said.

The Care Team can help student-moms who need to communicate with professors about missing class, assignments and ex-

ams. But many students are not aware they exist to help with that, Tanner said.

“I think right now UF is really catered toward kind of typical age students, not necessarily considering there are students who have families or have children,” Tanner said.

Tanner said the university could improve resources for student-moms by offering easier access to child care and more online or night classes.

Rudolph, the current Gator Moms President, said faculty and advisers in the biology department supported her by extending exam deadlines by a year and allowed her to do teacher’s assistant work online.

Daycare is another resource that needs to be improved for student-moms on campus, Rudolph said. They would benefit from a part-time daycare on campus so that they could drop their children off before classes rather than paying for a fulltime daycare.

“The reason Baby Gator started was to help out student-parents,” Rudolph said.

“And it slowly transitioned into more of a business kind of thing. And they keep adding more and more professors because they can charge them more and make ends meet that way.”

Kirsten Hechtbender, 36, echoed Rudolph’s experience with Baby Gator. The waitlist for enrollment in the daycare could take up to a year, she said.

Baby Gator began as a student-parent co-operative program, Hechtbender said.

But now, they pay the university to be on campus, she said.

Even with a student discount, the daycare costs $800 a month along with hundreds of dollars in annual fees and application fees, she said.

When Hechtbender attended a research seminar at Ohio State University, a professor told her she would have to choose between having a family and being a researcher someday. It never dawned on the then 20-year-old that she may have to sacrifice her personal life for the career she had wanted.

“I definitely remember zoning out after because I was shocked,” she said. “I didn’t want to have to make that kind of decision. I’d never heard someone tell me that before.”

Now, Hechtbender is both a UF doctoral interdisciplinary ecology student and mom to 9-year-old Dmitry Kardasz. This outlook on moms in science is slowly changing, Hecht said, but “there’s still a long way to go.”

Hechtbender said after she got pregnant unexpectedly while completing her master’s degree, the social isolation she felt was the biggest hurdle. If Gator Moms did not exist, she said student-moms would not have any group of peers to seek support from.

“You can be a great scientist or whatever you are training for and still have a life,” she said. “Now there’s a whole generation of women who came before us opening the door for us.”

Student-moms are often more worried about their academic careers and how they will be perceived by their peers, Hechtbender said. Becoming a mom often makes women feel that they cannot do their jobs successfully.

“Sometimes it feels like you’re constantly being looked at like you have to prove that you can be a parent and still do this,” she said. “We just don’t exist on campus.

GPD: Man arrested after his pit bulls kill dog, injure owner

Linda Swinburn promised to protect her emotional support dog Bella the day she adopted her four years ago.

When three pit bulls attacked and killed Bella last month, Swinburn held on to her as long as she could, she said.

Nathaniel Thomas Pettiford, 42, of Gainesville, the owner of three pit bulls, was arrested on a

warrant Thursday evening, GPD spokesperson Ofc. Ben Tobias wrote in an email.

Swinburn, who was diagnosed with anxiety and depression, told the Alligator she is happy Pettiford is behind bars, but she misses her dog every day.

“She saved me,” Swinburn said. “She saved my life, and she gave me a second chance to live.”

The pit bulls escaped from Pettiford’s home on the 5800 block of Northwest 29th Terrace around 7 p.m. Sept. 22, according to an

arrest report.

Linda Swinburn, 50, was walking Bella on a leash when the pit bulls ran across the street and attacked her dog, she told The Alligator.

She put her body over Bella to protect her, but it was no use, she said. The pit bulls broke Bella’s neck and ripped her apart, Swinburn said. She suffered two broken fingers, bruised ribs and posttraumatic stress from the attack.

It is unclear how the dogs escaped, but police think they

jumped the 4-foot fence surrounding the backyard, police said.

The attack marked the fourth time in 14 months Pettiford’s dogs escaped to attack another dog or person, the report said.

A pit bull jumped through a screen door at Pettiford’s home and attacked a small dog and two women July 6, 2017, the report said. Nobody answered the door when Animal Control Services arrived at Pettiford’s home.

Pettiford paid a fine after a pit bull escaped from his home

and menaced a neighbor walking down the street April 6. Two months later, a pit bull escaped from the yard and chased a woman back onto her own porch, the report said.

Pettiford is charged with one count of inflicting injury and one count of animal cruelty, according to online court records. He is held in Alachua County Jail. @AmandaNicRosa arosa@alligator.org

Last year, Kristina Whalen was in a relationship with her best friend.

She fell in love with his jokes and ocean-blue eyes, said Whalen, who is also Miss Gainesville. Then, his hands became dangerous.

“His hands made me feel safe, until they were used to hurt me,” the 25-year-old UF psychology senior said.

A group of more than 30 people gathered at Depot Park for a vigil to support those who died from domestic violence.

Forty-nine T-shirts designed by women and kids who use the programs at the center were hung outside. The shirts formed an art installation with inspirational quotes from those who experienced domestic abuse.

One shirt read, “NEVER LET YOUR HAPPINESS GO.” Another read, “Abuse will no longer be tolerated.”

“It provides a great opportunity to share their journey in an art form,”

said Theresa Beachy, the executive director of Peaceful Paths Inc. in Alachua, Union and Bradford counties.

The event marks the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Beachy said. It gave survivors an opportunity to share their experiences.

“Stories are really what bind us together as a culture,” Beachy said.

Whalen thought she was in a happy relationship, she told the event attendees, but she could not bring herself to eat when she was with him, losing nearly 12 pounds.

“I thought I was invincible,” she said.

Whalen said her friends and family did not believe she was being abused.

“Everything became my fault,” she said.

But she was fortunate, because she was able to find help, Whalen said.

“My greatest accomplishment is that I am a survivor of dating violence,” she said.

Whalen invited participants to flicked on the light of electric tea candles, leaving them to glow on a table at the front of the room.

“We will not stop shining a light on the darkness of violence,” she said. “We can never stop.” @gilliangsweeney gsweeney@alligator.org

Panhandle farmers promote peanuts through food donation

As Libbie Johnson drove along Cantonment, Florida roads, she saw the dust from peanut farmers floating in the air.

Seeing the panhandle farmers inspired Johnson, the agricultural agent for UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences in Escambia County, to co-organize a peanut butter challenge in collaboration with the Florida Peanut Producers Association, which began Monday.

The challenge, organized by the

UF/IFAS Northwest Extension District, donates peanut butter to hungry families, Johnson wrote in an email.

The project helps those who are food insecure and supports local farmers.

“Food pantries look forward to us coming in December to replenish their peanut butter stores,” Johnson said.

Though the challenge started in 2012, this year the county added a new drop-off location and expanded to another participating church.

Johnson said they have been working to expand the challenge so more Floridians become aware that peanuts are a local crop.

The goal is to donate 10,000 pounds of peanut butter across northwest Florida, she said. In 2017, the district collected 8,910 pounds of peanut butter, not including the match from local peanut producers, which can bring the total to more than 20,000 pounds, she said.

Rodney Helton, a local Escambia County peanut farmer, spends this time of year harvesting and enjoys participating in the challenge, he said.

“I’ve actually been on the deliveries, everybody is excited,” Helton said. “They come running, it’s amazing how appreciative they are.”

New techniques may be able to solve old problems at UF’s upcoming research center.

The UF Pain Research and Intervention Center of Excellence and UF Institute on Aging were awarded a $1.9 million grant Sunday from the National Institute on Aging.

Over the course of five years, the grant, which will support minority involvement and the decrease in pain in the elderly, would allow the UF centers to partner together to create the UF Resource Center for Minority Aging Research. This will diversify the research workforce and improve the health of older adults, said Roger Fillingim, the director of the UF Pain Research and Intervention Center of Excellence.

“The more diverse the per-

spective of a research environment, the more productive an environment is,” said Fillingim, who is also a professor at the UF College of Dentistry.

The center will be located at UF’s Clinical and Translational Research Building. Researchers will work on pilot projects, such as pain treatments for older adults and psychological studies, for three months before real trials could begin, Fillingim said.

“Pain is a major public health issue,” Fillingim said.

“It’s arguably the most expensive and most prevalent health condition in the world.”

This is an important grant for UF because it will foster research and training for junior faculty and scientists, said Marco Pahor, director of the UF Institute of Aging.

The DBUs will have to depend on their D-Lines

Florida and Louisiana State both lay claim to the title of ‘DBU’ because of the professional products that each program consistently churns out of their secondaries.

Each side enters Saturday’s SEC showdown with defensive backs worth noting. The No. 22 Gators (4-1, 1-1 SEC) have sophomore C.J. Henderson, freshman Trey Dean III and junior Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, and the Tigers (5-0, 2-0 SEC) boast preseason All-SEC talents in corner Greedy Williams and safety Grant Delpit.

However, the question heading into Saturday will be how each team’s defensive lines can impact the game.

Two composed quarterbacks will take the field in front of a committee of experienced running backs that can pound the rock.

Whichever defensive line can consistently win the battle upfront should help its team escape with a win.

The starting quarterbacks — UF’s Feleipe Franks and LSU’s Joe Burrow — have shown their efficiency this season by passing for a combined 18 touchdowns and only three interceptions.

Senior Jordan Scarlett and junior Lamical Perine will lead the UF backfield, while senior Nick Brossette has carried a considerable load of the rushes for the Tigers, complemented by the speedy sophomore in Clyde EdwardsHelaire.

Making the opponent’s quarterback uncomfortable on obvious passing downs and breaking through the opposite side’s blocks to shut down running lanes will prove critical, especially because those factors determined the victor in this matchup each of the last two seasons.

People always assume Air Force is the only military branch that flies planes.

The only place Navy doesn’t go through the air is on the gridiron. Of its 88 first downs on the season, only 14 have come via pass. Quarterback Malcolm Perry and fullback (Yes, an actual fullback) Nelson Smith lead the nation’s best rushing attack (355.8 yards per game).

The Air Force homers will object to this. “Oh, we have the No. 12 rushing defense in the nation!” they’ll shout from their air traffic control towers or wherever their safe spaces are. “Nobody would dare run on us.”

UF suffers eighth shutout of season in loss to Tennessee

The Volunteers didn’t take long to make their mark.

It only took a tap of the ball from streaking Tennessee forward Danielle Marcano to find the back of the net off a cross from teammates Erin Gilroy and Meghan Flynn. The Gators quickly fell behind 1-0.

The Gators (4-7-2, 2-2-1 SEC) dropped to the Volunteers 2-0 on Thursday at Donald R. Dizney Stadium in Gainesville, the team’s first loss since September 16th.

Despite the lapse in defensive play to start the match, the Gators held their own for the rest of the first half. The team had outshot the Volunteers 7-4 once the half ended with Tennessee (10-1-1, 4-1 SEC) up 1-0, and it was finding good chances.

UF’s Mayra Pelayo had a wide open look during the 23rd minute just feet away from the goal, but her shot was too high and it bounced off the crossbar. Florida had another good chance in the 35th minute when midfielder Sarah Troccoli took a shot from the left side of the goal in the six-yard box, but Vols goalkeeper Shae Yanez made the save.

UF put a limit on Tennessee’s offense heading into the second period aside from a close call in the 41st minute when the Gators’ goalkeeper Kaylan Marckese de-

flected a shot that bounced off the crossbar.

Tennessee’s offense came out strong once the second half began. The Volunteers struck again

in the 57th minute when Gilroy put the ball in for her second goal of the season, extending UT’s lead to two.

Florida didn’t take another

shot until the 76th minute, but the team kept a solid offensive attack for the rest of the match.

Although the team took plenty of shots in the latter half of the game, the Gators’ efforts were in vain and the team found itself shut out for the eighth time this season when the clock hit zero.

Coach Becky Burleigh commended Tennessee’s defense, which has only let up four goals the entire season. She also asserted UF’s offensive play didn’t make it difficult for the Volunteers.

“I think we made it a little easy for them,” she said after the game. “Our chances weren’t very critical.”

Florida will only get two days off before it heads to South Carolina to take on the defending SEC Champion Gamecocks at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Although the team took the loss against Tennessee, midfielder Sammie Betters said she isn’t too worried about the impending match.

Hall, Gators take undefeated conference record into Friday matchup

Arriving at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri, last December was a special moment for Dorman High School coach Paula Kirkman and then-senior outside hitter Thayer Hall.

Hall, the most decorated athlete in the history of Dorman High School, was heading to Missouri for the Under Armour AllAmerican matchup between the best incoming collegiate athletes in the country.

The freshman now plays on the Florida Gators’ squad, but she has always been a dominant player, said Kirkman, who often goes by coach Kirk.

“She’s one of the most competitive players I’ve ever coached,” Kirk said. “We all knew how good she was, we just had no idea how well she was going to do.”

Within two minutes of Hall hitting the court, the veteran coach of 38 years had her answer.

“She was going to do OK,” she thought.

She wasn’t wrong. Hall led the Gators to their first win of the season against the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the NCAA defending title champions, as the lone Gator to notch more than nine kills (20).

Hall is the first freshman to notch 20 kills in her collegiate debut under coach Mary Wise.

After the matchup against Nebraska, Kirk said she texted Wise congratulating her on the win and commending Hall’s debut performance.

Wise texted her back saying if anyone didn’t know who Hall was before the match, they surely knew her name now.

Hall continues to impress, leading all freshmen in the SEC in points per set, averaging 3.84, and taking away two SEC Freshman of the Week accolades, the second coming after her performance against LSU and Alabama over the weekend.

The outside hitter will not be denied as she leads the No. 11 Gators into a chal-

lenge of their own: keeping the team’s undefeated win-streak in conference play alive.

Florida (13-3, 4-0 SEC) will take on Texas A&M tonight at 7 in the O’Connell Center, the first home game since the team defeated Mississippi State on Sept. 23.

The Aggies enter Friday’s contest also undefeated in conference play (10-5, 3-0 SEC), taking wins from Arkansas, Georgia and LSU.

“We’re playing some teams with some really fast offenses,” Wise said during media Tuesday, “and some of the best arms in our league.”

Flashing back to Hall’s last moment on the court as a Dorman Cavalier, Kirk reflected that the coaching staff always had to find new ways to challenge Hall.

Cheating the system seemed to be the only way to keep Hall on her toes. It got to the point where coaches would tell her to just play, Kirk said.

Looking at how Hall has matured has been a highlight of Kirk’s this season.

In high school, Kirk said Hall would occasionally get caught up in the officiating, especially if a referee made a wrong call against her.

“We would just sit back, cross our arms, smile and say, ‘Watch this,’” Kirk said chuckling at the memory. “She would take it out on that ball like the ball was the official.”

Hall’s strength has never been a secret either.

Kirk called her a “beast” in the weight room, describing how she would have the perfect form for weighted squats, often outperforming some of the guys in the gym.

When she wasn’t in practice, she was in the gym – physically training her body for the next level, which she knew not a lot of other athletes had the same dedication to do.

After lobbying to not save trees and continuing to print out stacks of game notes at Monday’s press conference, Edgar showed off his true green self by throwing the previous week’s notes in the recycling bin to show everyone present how good of a recycler he is. The rivalry hasn’t been the same since.

The second is the story of quarterback Feleipe Franks and his history with the Tigers.

Franks, a four-star recruit, was a verbal commit to LSU nearly three years ago before flipping his commitment to former Gators head coach Jim McElwain. He was one of McElwain’s biggest recruits during his time at Florida.

Franks hasn’t looked back in the three years since. He said he doesn’t think about how much different his life could have been if he had stayed with LSU. “I don’t ever think about that,” Franks said.

“Just more focused on what, you know, what we got going on here. We got something good going on here at Florida.”

Franks will face the life he could have had when he takes the field against LSU on Saturday.

The last one is the story of two former teammates taking the field against each other.

State last season. Grimes was a freshman and saw limited playing time while Burrow was a backup in Urban Meyer’s regime.

Less than a year later, Grimes is now at Florida while Burrow is under center at LSU. “Before I left Ohio State, me and him were kind of close,” Grimes said. “I think he’s a good player.”

Now, both will meet again at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Saturday for the first time since 2017, this time under different banners.

There are plenty reasons to be excited when LSU comes to town. The stories breathe new life into a budding rivalry, one that has taken a backseat to those like FSU, Georgia and Tennessee.

But LSU contains one aspect that is lacking from those other rivalries: a general disdain for one another.

The Gators and the Tigers are enemies, fueled by recent events and storylines that make this weekend’s contest a much-watch affair.

Reese made his season debut against Tennessee on Sept. 22 “It was frustrating. But we put the best guys in there at the time,”’ Reese said. “Our guys played hard. We could have done better.”

Perhaps the Gators wouldn’t have missed 20 tackles or given up 454 yards had one of their leaders been on the field. But Reese will never know if the outcome of that game would be altered had he been out there to bring the tough presence that was missing.

“I think anytime you can add a physical presence that has leadership qualities to your team,” Grantham said. “I think, one, that position becomes better, but I think he makes other players around him better.”

Reese’s Return Eager Volunteers fans hustled for the entrance with the excitement of 10-year-old children racing toward their treasures on Christmas Day. None of them were more anxious than Reese, though, as he lined up awaiting the first Tennessee snap that would make his return to the game official.

Seconds passed and Tennessee quarterback Jarrett Guarantano handed the ball to running back Ty Chandler, who scampered through the hole opened up by his offensive line.

SLAM. Chandler quickly found himself being whirled into the turf by Reese, who wasted no time to make his first tackle since 2017.

All the anxiety, the torment, the jitters ended with that first tackle.

But he wasn’t done there.

Reese leapt and caught a loose ball for a fumble recovery in that same series, thanks to a strip and sack of Guarantano by defensive end Jachai Polite.

And Reese needed just one game to prove that he was that piece the Gators were missing.

The team’s leading tackler from a year ago recorded a team-high 11 tackles to go along with that fumble recovery in his return.

“It felt good, got the little pregame jitters out,” he said.

“It felt good to get back, get my feet wet. When I got that first tackle, I actually felt my ankle was going to be OK for this game and I’m going to be OK. I’m going to be solid to play.”

At the conclusion of the contest, the triumph clung to Reese’s 6-foot-1 frame in the form of tiny beads of perspiration. He missed that unmistakable feeling of basking in the glory of his success and knowing that he had a hand in propelling his team to the 47-21 victory.

“He led the team man. That speaks volumes. That speaks for itself,” defensive lineman CeCe Jefferson said.

Jefferson had competed for the first time of the season as well, contributing three tackles and 1.5 tackles-for-loss.

Only 260 yards have been gained on the ground against the Gators since the pair of veterans have been implemented back into the defense. And Jefferson was not hesitant to express his elation over Reese’s recovery.

“We’re definitely happy to have him back there calling the signals being the leader of that linebacker corps,” Jefferson said.

The linebacker will make his third start of the year on Saturday when Florida welcomes the LSU Tigers to the Swamp. And he’ll revel in the atmosphere of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium for the first time this year as Gators fans rejoice at his return home.

After all, his teammates already have.

Tiger Watch: Q&A with LSU’s student newspaper Staff Report

We got with Kennedi Landry, the sports editor of LSU’s student newspaper, The Daily Reveille, to ask a few questions about Saturday’s game. Here’s what she had to say about the Tigers and their chances of winning against Florida.

Q: Joe Burrow ran wild against Ole Miss. Do you see Ed Orgeron utilizing him in that way against UF’s defense?

A: I definitely think Orgeron and offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger will continue the designated quarterback runs. Orgeron has mentioned that he was apprehensive about doing it, but has been more open in recent weeks. Burrow is smart, with only one turnover on the season, and he knows what to do in the situation. LSU does only have two scholarship quarterback on the roster, and Burrow has been taking some hard hit these last few weeks, so I’m sure they’re going to want to.

Q: LSU players’ reactions to DBU debate?

A: LSU All-American cornerback Greedy Williams doesn’t talk to the media often, but he made sure to earlier this week. He said at media availability, “Stats don’t lie. We have the best DBs in the NFL.” I think that alone says a lot about how LSU feels about the debate. LSU lost Donte Jackson to the draft last spring, but the Tigers still have two capable corners opposite Williams in former five-star Kristian Fulton and four-star Kelvin Joseph.

Grant Delpit at safety is by far LSU’s biggest weapon this season. He leads the team in interceptions, sacks and tackles for loss and is third in total tackles. After the defense shut down one of the SEC’s most potent passing attacks last week against Ole Miss, I think this LSU secondary will be out to prove they deserve DBU. Q: Any resentment among the team having to play in Gainesville twice in two years?

A: I think a lot of fans and players alike have not forgotten the 2016 Hurricane Matthew fiasco and the result of playing in Gainesville for two years in a row. But I don’t think it’s as much about playing in Gainesville two years in a row as it is the

pregame scuffle that took place in 2016. Orgeron is smart and he wants to avoid another big distraction like that. The team knows the Swamp is a hard place to play, but SEC road games are always tough and they expect no different here. Game aside, Greedy Williams points out the trash-talking that’s likely to happen both in warmups and during the game.

Q: Who’s going to be the differencemaker for the Tigers?

A: Weirdly enough, I think special teams will be the difference-maker for LSU. Special teams has by far been LSU’s most improved unit. Kicker Cole Tracy has obviously been the talk of the team since the Auburn win.

He’s only missed two field goals this season and has not missed an extra point. His only misses have come on field goals of more than 50 yards, but he’s also made ones of 52 and 54 yards. Punter Zach Von Rosenberg’s ability to pin the other team inside the 10yard line will go a long way in a close scoring game. This game has been determined by one score for the last two years and a short field will take LSU a long way.

Q: What weakness, if any, do you believe the Gators can exploit?

A: The pass rush is definitely LSU’s biggest weakness. After losing edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson to an ACL injury in the season opener, Aranda has ruled by committee at the position with Andre Anthony, Michael Divinity and Ray Thornton. They have been serviceable, but nowhere near the production LSU needs. It says a lot about LSU’s pass rush when Delpit is your sack leader.

Exploiting LSU’s pass rush also leads to open receivers as the quarterback holds the ball longer and that will be the key for the Gators.

Q: Who ya got?

A: I’m going to go 17-7 LSU. This matchup is also pretty low-scoring and I don’t expect that to change. Both teams have almost identical points allowed per game (LSU at 15, UF at 14) and points scored per game (LSU at 33, UF at 35), but I think Dave Aranda’s defense can shut down Franks handily and the offense will continue its upward trajectory.

The Burrow-led offense has had more total yards each game and I don’t expect that to change this weekend.
