Arts and Crafts Bazaar at Ocala Palms An arts and crafts bazaar will be held at Ocala Palms Golf & Country Club, on U.S. Highway 27, one mile west of Interstate 75, Exit 354, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Florida Museum hosting ‘The Lost Bird Project’ The Florida Museum of Natural History is now displaying “The Lost Bird Project,” an exhibit that includes five castbronze sculptures of the extinct Carolina Parakeet, Great Auk, Heath Hen, Labrador Duck and Passenger Pigeon. Artist Todd McGrain created the statues as a tribute to endangered and extinct species. Ranging from 4 to 6 feet in height, the sculptures were permanently placed where each bird was last seen in the wild, ranging from Fogo Island, Newfoundland, to Okeechobee, Florida, with traveling exhibits of the same figures touring nationally. NEWS AROUND THE WORLD Mexican agents nibble at edges of migrant caravans JUCHITAN, Mexico (AP) — Thousands of Central American migrants resumed their slow trek through southern Mexico on Thursday, as immigration agents and police nibbled at the edges of the two caravans currently in the country.

Mexican authorities haven't directly targeted the main caravan of about 4,000 migrants, and activists aiding that group said they were shifting their route toward the Gulf coast, a path closer to the Texas border.

UF RecSports takes the lead for a healthier campus The University of Florida will be bringing the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) Healthier Campus Initiative to the UF community. The Department of Recreational Sports team, under the Division of Student Affairs, has taken a chief role in implementing university-wide strategies to enhance healthy practices on campus.

“Our goal through PHA is to provide robust nutrition, cutting-edge physical activity opportunities, and to empower the UF community to live and work in wellness,” according to Darcie Burde, Associate Director of RecSports and GatorWell Health Promotion Services.

The Steering Committee for the campaign is comprised of Burde, Dr. Anne Matthews, associate professor for Food Science and Human Nutrition and Megan Engel, Ph.D. student in nutritional sciences at the University of Florida.

The campaign outlines 23 goals that are based on PHA’s three guidelines: Food and Nutrition, Physical Activity and Programming. Engel said, this partnership “represents UF’s commitment to creating an environment that promotes health and wellness of students, faculty and staff.”

The collaborative effort is made up of the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, GatorWell, Business Affairs, and the College of Journalism and Communications.

According to Burde, the campus partner connections are imperative for the collaboration efforts for which the campaign calls. The research team, co-chaired by Dr. Matthews and Engel, will evaluate the overall effectiveness of the campaign.

“Everyone in the UF community will see the impacts of the campaign, with an emphasis on those who eat at the dining halls,” Burde said. The nutrition initiatives include providing healthier food alternatives for customers on campus. The campaign also intends to increase the amount of sustainable and local food options offered at UF. RecSports will be a part of initiatives geared toward the physical activity guidelines, such as hosting immersive orientations of the facilities.

UF will have 3 years to complete the campaign’s goals starting from the date that the memorandum of understating was signed, which was on Oct. 12, 2018.

The Social GNV will have live music from Ethan Thompson Saturday from 7-10 p.m.

Ashlee Henriquez never left UF despite graduating in 2014.

Her face plastered on the wall of Heavener Hall memorializes her for passing business students.

Henriquez is one of the dozens of students photographed and displayed across campus. Here’s what some of them are up to today.

Ashlee Henriquez Then: In 2013, Henriquez was serving customers at Outback Steakhouse in between accounting classes. A 22-year-old UF accounting senior, Henriquez wanted to graduate debt-free.

Henriquez was the vice president of programming for the Warrington Diplomats, an organization within the College of Business. She suspects that’s why the designers of Heavener Hall used her photo.

When Heavener Hall opened at the end of 2014, Henriquez only spent a couple weeks in the building before graduating. One of the last Warrington Diplomats meetings she attended was held in Heavener.

For her, it was one of the last opportunities she had to spend time with her fellow diplomats before saying goodbye.

Now: Henriquez, 27, moved to Miami after graduating. She’s a senior associate for Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited, where she has worked in the audit department for three years, she said.

Henriquez comes to UF once or twice a year to recruit for the company. In her spare time, she’s developing a blog about Disney she hopes to release in the next year.

Every now and then, people ask her about the photo in Heavener.

“I’m very humble about it,” Henriquez said.

“I’m honestly kind of embarrassed when people say, ‘Aren’t you the girl in Heavener?’”

Stephanie Chastain Then: In 2014, Chastain was a 22-year-old UF economics and information systems senior.

She had just finished a summer internship with KPMG, an accounting firm, when someone asked her to participate in a photoshoot for the new business hall.

By the time the photo was taken, Chastain had accepted a job offer to work at KPMG after graduating. Without the worry of looking for a job, she en-

joyed her senior year as the president of the Florida Business Leadership Society, she said.

Now: Four years later, the 26-year-old lives in Tampa, but her job lets her travel all over the country.

As a chief information officer senior associate, Chastain has traveled to Washington, D.C. and Atlanta. As of homecoming week, she’s in New York City working on a project, Chastain said.

She doesn’t often think about her photograph hanging in Heavener Hall, but said she looks back on it fondly.

“It’s a combination of feeling proud to be able to represent my school and humbled,” she said.

Bryan Rivera Then: Less than a year ago, Rivera was doing web development for the university while working in the marketing department of UF Student Affairs.

The then-20-year-old UF computer science junior’s boss and the Dean of Students invited him to a photoshoot in Spring 2018. Rivera didn’t think much of it and had no idea where his photo would go.

During the summer, friends messaged Rivera and sent him pictures of himself enlarged next to the hotel entrance in the Reitz Union. He hadn’t seen it.

Now: Not much other than Rivera’s age has changed since a giant version of him was posted in the Reitz, he said.

After the photo was taken in Spring, Rivera was offered a job with Coursera, a tech education startup. He will move to San Francisco after he graduates in May, he said.

“People will say, ‘Now you have a job; the (Career Connections Center) will be ecstatic,’” he said.

“Now they know the person they put on the wall has a job and is being successful.”

Four strangers have approached Rivera to ask if he’s the person on the wall. It’s a weird feeling, but Rivera is happy he’ll have a piece of himself left at UF after he graduates, he said. Rivera hopes he will be an example for incoming Latino students.

“When new students come on campus, they’ll see someone that looks like them and have the confidence that they’ll graduate and get a full-time job at UF,” Rivera said. @jesscurbelo jcurbelo@alligator.org

Here are 5 things to know about the Starbucks cart on campus THE BIKE WAS DEBUTED BY GATOR DINING ON OCT. 15.

Irfan Kovankaya was running to class and in desperate need of coffee when a green umbrella attached to a bike caught his eye.

Gator Dining debuted the #StarbucksBIKE, a wooden nitro cold brew coffee cart attached to a tricycle, on Oct. 15, Jill Rodriguez, a Gator Dining representative, wrote in an email.

Days after his first purchase, the 21-year-old UF political science junior was in a rush again as he stopped by the cart at Anderson Hall to get another cup.

“It’s a lot easier to get coffee outside instead of going into Marston,” he said. “This will probably be integrated into my daily routine.”

1. The #StarbucksBIKE is coming to homecoming.

The coffee cart will be at the UF Homecoming Festival today, Ro-

driguez said. People can buy coffee from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Plaza of the Americas.

2. The #StarbucksBIKE is a permanent UF addition.

The Starbucks cart is a permanent addition to Gator Dining and will continue to travel around campus, Rodriguez said.

3. The cart is the only vendor on campus that sells Starbucks’ nitro cold brew coffee.

The cart is the only location on campus where people can buy Starbucks’ nitro cold brew coffee, said Fitroya Nugent, a Starbucks cart employee.

The coffee is steeped for 20 hours like any other cold brew before it is infused with nitrogen, the 23-yearold UF alumna said.

“It’s more caffeinated,” Nugent said. “The nitrogen makes the coffee creamier and smoother without milk or sugar.”

The coffee is only available in the grande size. People can buy a 16-ounce nitro cold brew, but for an extra 50 cents, they can add some vanilla sweet cream.

4. The bicycle cart is on cam-

pus four days a week.

During a regular week, the cart circulates around campus, stopping at one location, Rodriguez said.

“The #StarbucksBIKE was developed to offer additional occasions to serve our customers where they work or congregate,” she said.

On Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the #StarbucksBIKE is open from 9 a.m. to noon on Turlington Plaza, on the North Lawn and in the business school area, respectively. On Fridays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the bike is inside the Gator Corner Dining Center and the Fresh Food Company. The bike isn’t open on Thursday.

Students can track down the bicycle cart on Gator Dining’s Instagram, Rodriguez said.

5. The bike only accepts card payments.

The bike baristas can only accept credit or debit cards for now, Nugent said. However, employees hope to eventually accept Gator 1 Cards.

Behind the Meme: Creators discuss their Swampiest Memes

Aloft in the heavens, UF President Kent Fuchs is anointed by the angels with the holiest crown of all: a UF baseball cap.

Behind him, alligators open their mouths in chomping delight. No, this isn’t a dream; it’s Swampy Memes.

Rebecca Ragan, a 20-year-old UF music and statistics junior, founded “UF memes for middle class teens,” a Facebook page, on March 21, 2017.

The page was renamed to “Swampy UF memes for top public teens” a month later.

Eleven admins and one moderator oversee the more than 37,000 page members, many of whom interact with videos, photos and events.

On average, about five to 20 memes are submitted every day, Ragan said. However, the submissions can reach more than 30 depending on the day’s meme-worthiness.

Submissions spiked when University Police was looking for an accused burglar wearing a Spider-Man costume on Halloween.

“I think it’s a way for people to get time-sensitive news,” Ragan said.

The Alligator spoke to three of the creators behind some of the most popular Swampy memes: Ashley Kummer Financial aid dancing lizard video: 1,000+ reactions Kummer was on hold with Student Financial Affairs for almost an hour and decided to scroll through Twitter to entertain herself. She saw a video of an animated dancing liz-

ard and decided to make a meme.

While waiting, the 21-year-old UF public relations senior recorded the office’s on-hold music and made the video in about 30 minutes. She said the most difficult part of the creation was finding a dancing lizard video that matched the beat of the music.

The video was Kummer’s first meme on the page.

“If I wanted to make one, I wanted to go all out,” Kummer said.

Zakaria Bennouna “When a Gator Loves His President”: 250 reactions on Facebook; 2,000+ views on Twitter An assignment for Bennouna’s class led to him going viral on Facebook and Twitter.

The 19-year-old UF mechanical engineering sophomore had to make a 30-to-60-second video that could potentially go viral.

While his classmates filmed more serious videos, Bennouna planned eight ideas ranging from interviewing dogs to a kid teaching a class. His final idea was a love song for Fuchs.

“I suck at music,” Bennouna said “I didn’t know what a chorus, a bridge, anything was.”

He borrowed a friend’s ukulele and started writing the song based on “Riptide” by Vance Joy. Bennouna said when he filmed the last scene in front of the president’s office, he met Steve Orlando, a university spokesperson. Orlando gave Bennouna his business card because and said that he might be able to get Fuchs to retweet it.

Bennouna redownloaded Twitter on his phone for the opportunity.

Fuchs retweeted the video on Oct. 24.

Jordan Ashleigh Brown Preview staff welcoming all of the

incoming freshman: 1,900+ reactions Jordan Ashleigh Brown started making memes for her friends in the sixth grade on the iFunny app.

Now, the 26 memes she created for Swampy Memes have received thousands of reactions on Facebook.

The 20-year-old UF sustainability and the built environment junior said she created the “Preview Staff” meme last summer in her room at 3

a.m. She threw an already-viral video of sorority sisters chanting into Adobe Premiere and added the phrase “UF Preview” on their shirts.

It continues to get reactions during sorority recruitment and Preview.

“It’s cool to be a part of Swampy Memes history, I guess,” Brown said.

But it’s not for the fame or recognition. Brown said she enjoys the community of students above all.

Brown believes the page has influenced campus beyond making people laugh. Students use humor to discuss issues like Student Government spending and on-campus mental health resources.

“It engages people more in a way that’s comical and most of the time very lighthearted,” she said. @hannahbeatty_ hbeatty@alligator.org

You partied into Saturday morning, but the afternoon has already come calling. The sounds of tailgating are beating down your door and begging to be let it in. These festivities wait for no Gator — they could not care less about your sleeping habits. You grumble to yourself and bunker your head under your pillow, but the fluffy shield doesn’t do much to dampen the subwoofers, excited yelling and the scent of hot dogs and hamburgers wafting through the window. You descend the stairs to investigate.

Outside, you’re greeted with face paint, grilled meat, an ageappropriate beverage and an overwhelming amount of school spirit. You could get used to this. Dressed in blue among a sea of other Gators, you feel like you belong — as if you are a single shield in the armored phalanx that is the Gator Nation. You see a lone target in a yellow shirt with the nerve to have “Missouri Tigers” written on their back. As you walk to the stadium, determined, only two things are on your mind: victory and…

Darts and Laurels

Homecoming is the big-ticket item on the agenda this weekend, but we’d like to submit a few other newsworthy topics for your consideration. Google employees left their fancy office chairs and took to the streets with signs in hand and voices raised Thursday.

Employees staged a walkout after learning of the luxurious financial retirement package the company awarded to a high-level executive who left amid allegations of sexual misconduct in 2014.

The executive, Andy Rubin, received a $90 million parachute as he stepped out, or rather, was forced into retirement.

Sundar Pichai, Google’s current chief executive, tried to explain the problem away, saying that 48 employees had been fired for sexual harassment over the last two years. None of them received an exit package, according to The New York Times. “We are committed to ensuring that Google is a workplace … where there are serious consequences for anyone who behaves inappropriately,” Pichai said.

Really? Is that so?

Rubin’s exit package sounds more like an award than a consequence. Even worse, Google wasn’t legally obligated to pay Rubin a dime. For failing to handle the situation tactfully, the tech giant receives a dart. They could have sent Rubin packing with a loud, abrupt, unpleasant bump. Instead, they let him slip away quietly with $90 million in his back pocket. We award a laurel to each and every one of the women and men who marched. If it takes a strike to end workplace sexual harassment, so be it.

In news not quite at but closer to home, Miami Beach will appear before the Florida Supreme Court in a continuing court battle to raise its minimum wage to $13.31 an hour from the previous minimum, $8.25. Ask yourself: If a city government tried to look out for its laborers and institute a fairer minimum rate for their blood, sweat and toil, what would happen? A) Everything would go smoothly, B) the workers would revolt or C) the attorney general would side with business interest groups and sue the city, crying foul over a $5 increase.

Maybe the more puzzling question is, who can still survive on $8.25 an hour?

A dart to Pam Bondi, Florida’s attorney general, for taking up the cause of businesses against workers. Maybe she does not realize that 30 other states already have a higher minimum than we do, and the federal minimum has done a poor job of keeping up with inflation.

The November election could cost us our No. 8 public university spot

he upcoming midterm election is critical for the future of Florida. On the ballot are not only candidates and initiatives but the very character of our state.

Each and every one of us has a stake in this election and in our democracy. Here are three things that make this election critical that you may not have considered before: Almost every state- and county-level official we elect this year will have some say in determining education funding at either the K-12 or university level. Each year, the state legislature divvies up funding not only for K-12 education, but also for the state’s colleges and universities. According to a report by the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association, Florida spent less money last year on higher education per full-time student than any other state. We have the option this year of voting for candidates who want to stay this course or voting for nominees seeking change.

For the sleep-starved UF students sitting outside Emerson Hall, waiting for T-shirts means making memories.

For others, it means proving their own insanity.

Hunter Hurley, a 19-year-old UF political science freshman, made sure his Snapchat followers saw that he got up around 5 a.m. with a group of friends.

“I sent out my streaks at 5:30, and I’m like, ‘Let’s get this bread,’” Hurley said. “And then walk over here. That’s how the day starts.”

The UF Alumni Association passes out 1,500 shirts to student members at Emerson Alumni Hall for popular games, said Jill Pettibone, the associate director of Student & Young Alumni Affairs.

Announcements via email, Instagram and the “Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow” Facebook page notify more than 6,500 members of distribution days and T-shirt designs.

Shirts are free with the membership and covered by dues, Pettibone said.

They beat the clock and their peers when they arrived at 4 a.m.

The girls bundled up in blankets and sleeping bags to protect themselves from the 60-degree temperature.

While they were fast asleep, Bowyer sat alert.

The 21-year-old UF mechanical engineering senior did not come to pick up a T-shirt.

“I came to keep her company,” Bowyer said about his girlfriend.

“Nothing else better to do.”

The alumni association sometimes offers a new shirt style, like a tank top, for certain games, Pettibone said. The white “Beat Missouri” T-shirt is the first long-sleeved shirt the association has ever released.

Hurley, Caela Vasquez, Griffin Conaty and Avery Smith waited in line together Thursday morning for the fourth time this year as part of their own new tradition.

When they found out about the new long-sleeved design from the Facebook page, one of them gasped in the middle of their What is the Good Life? class.

Vasquez, an 18-year-old UF biology freshman, enjoys seeing other students wearing the shirt because it gives them something in common to bond over.

“I think it means inclusivity because not many people are that insane to wait outside,” she said.

Smith, a 19-year-old UF business freshman, said a girl came up to him during class because he was wearing the “Beat LSU” shirt.

She jokingly said he was insane, he said. He agreed.

“I think every week someone in the group says, ‘We’re never doing this again,’ and then what do we all do?”

‘It’s always been a part of me’: UF students with disabilities TWO JUNIORS SHARE THEIR UF EXPERIENCE.

It was 4:59 p.m. Only one minute until Delainia Parrish could click on her future.

Parrish knew she worked hard through four years of vigorous studying for classes and standardized tests, but she was still nervous.

As her family huddled around her, she refreshed two laptops when she clicked on an email at 5 p.m. with her acceptance to UF. However, the future could have been different. Parrish was born with a physical disability from cerebral palsy — a neurological condition that affects movement, muscle tone and motor skills — but she said there was a 50 percent chance she could have been born with an intellectual disability, too.

Parrish, a 20-year-old UF marketing junior, said she understands that her world is different but it has never stopped her from achieving.

“I must identify and take ownership of my own strengths and needs,” Parrish said.

“I must advocate for myself every step of the way.”

Parrish is one of more than 3,000 students registered with the UF Disability Resource Center, which helps accommodate students with both physical and mental disabilities. Last year, the center proctored

11,000 exams for students who needed aids such as extra time or a separate space. Places like Cypress Hall accommodate students with all kinds of disabilities, Parrish said.

Parrish resides in one of the dorm’s 15 “smart rooms” where lights and doors are automated with the touch of a finger.

The rooms also come with a lift system and varying accommodations for accessibility based on each residing student’s needs.

Although most of UF has complied for the American with Disabilities Act, there are still improvements to be made, said Gerry Altamirano, the assistant dean and director of the UF Disability Resource Center.

Buildings such as Murphree, Fletcher and Sledd Hall still need to be renovated to better fit the needs of students with physical disabilities.

Many of UF’s buildings such as Buckman and Walker Hall were built prior to ADA compliance standards in the 1990s and have not had major renovations since the 1980s.

Buildings were constructed with the assumption that everyone shares similar characteristics in height, mobility and physicality, Altamirano said.

“Our challenge is to think inclusively as to how we can create a new way of thinking or producing something that is inclusive for all people,” Altamirano said.

During his first Fall semester at UF, Bradley Minotti was on his way to a psychology club meeting in Little Hall when he realized the elevator was broken.

Minotti, a 21-year-old UF psychology junior with cerebral palsy since birth, relies

on his wheelchair for mobility and couldn’t make it to the meeting on the second floor.

He said UF students are generally inclusive, physical or architectural issues can make students feel left out or limited by their disabilities.

“People will fix it if you tell them to, but people don’t always think about it,” Minotti said.

Despite his condition, Minotti said he’s lived his life to the fullest by going to football games, hanging out with his friends and exploring new places on campus and in downtown Gainesville.

He feels as if he has been able to have the same UF experience as other students.

“A lot of people think that it’s something that’s very difficult, and they see me differently for it, and they feel bad for me,” Minotti said. “But it’s always been a part of me, and it’s not something that makes me upset.”

Instead of focusing on someone having a disability, Parrish said people’s unique differences are just unique abilities.

“Each of us has a role to play in life,” Parrish said. “And marginalizing those who are different takes color out of the tapestry.”

After she graduates, Parrish said she wants to work as a consultant for major fashion programs but with a focus on inclusivity for customers with all body types.

She started her own brand called “Fearless Independence.”

She said she chose the name because everyone can relate to those words no matter the situation. Most people with unique

Empowering a person through fashion allows them to view themselves in a positive light and improve their self-confidence, Parrish said.

The fashion industry bases itself on marketing to a single type of woman rather than create clothing that promotes the inclusion of unique shapes and sizes, she said.

“Living to the best of our abilities without fear of failure can take us to our dream destinations,” Parrish said. “I’m not sure where all this will lead me, but I do believe you and I can make a difference in the world if we try.” @danacassidy_ dcassidy@alligator.org

The smell of sweat, beer and hot dogs is in the air at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. So is love.

The University Athletic Association has hosted about 13 weddings in The Swamp since 2013, said Daniel Apple, the UAA assistant communications director.

“For those diehard fans, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” he said.

Eryka LaFrance, 30, and Jacques LaFrance, 31, met at church in 2012. They were friends for four months until she moved to Chicago for a WNBA internship, she said.

But their friendship changed when Jacques LaFrance told Eryka’s cousin he had feelings for her the day before she got on the plane.

Five years later, the couple held

“I loved how beautiful the reception was and how much love there was amongst our family and friends,” Eryka LaFrance said.

UF was the matchmaker for Andrew Fleming, 31, and Kelly Fleming, 31.

They met while working for the UAA Sports Health Department at UF in 2011.

Andrew Fleming laid eyes on his future wife for the first time when she walked in late for a staff meeting, he said. He knew he had to introduce himself to her.

In 2014, Kelly Fleming signed them up for a marathon in Minnesota.

Andrew Fleming ran the marathon holding her engagement ring and pretended to start cramping.

Then, he got down on one knee.

Two years later on July 1, 2016, the couple held their wedding reception at the Evans Champions Club above the football field.

All of the nearly 200 guests gathered to take a picture in the stands posed with their hands up and cheered, Andrew Fleming said.

Surrounded by their guests, the Flemings signed off their night with a smooch.

But the party in the stadium wasn’t his favorite part, he said.

Getting to know the legacy of UF mascots Albert and Alberta THE DUO MAKES MORE THAN 400 APPEARANCES A YEAR.

The stuffy and sweaty Garrett Spitzer looked down to see a small crowd forming below the 20-foot telephone pole he sat on.

Wearing a bright green velour bodysuit, he remembered his Chi Phi Fraternity brothers using a rope to lift the famous 30-pound Gator head up to him so he could wear the suit for the next two hours on the pole.

Spitzer, 58, had a reputation for doing almost anything and said he wore the suit for a charity event for his fraternity in Fall 1979.

It’s been almost 40 years, but Spitzer said he will never forget the time he became Albert.

“I don’t remember seeing a single teacher, but I remember Albert,” Spitzer, a UF alumnus, said.

Gator fans know Albert and Alberta as the university’s beloved mascots, but the pair has a long history of building the Gator brand. Casey Reed, UF’s mascot coordinator, said they are more than just costumes; they are part of UF’s legacy.

“It’s important that everyone

knows it’s about them, and it’s what Albert and Alberta can bring to the school,” she said.

Albert and Alberta’s daily schedules revolve around appearances at sporting and charity events, Reed said. Every year they make more than 400 appearances.

“At the end of the day, when I’m no longer here, Albert and Alberta will still be here,” Reed said.

“That’s why it’s so important for me that they are the ones that are receiving the recognition.”

Albert is suave, charismatic and ambitious. Alberta is confident, sassy and chic. Reed said her team tries their best to stay true to the mascots’ personality traits even when their appearances change.

Before Albert entered the scene, the university had live alligators in pens outside of Century Tower in the 1950s, said UF historian Carl Van Ness. It wasn’t until 1970 that the university introduced the first costumed Albert, most likely based off a comic strip character of the same name.

Early iterations of Albert made him seem fiercer than his friendly demeanor today, Van Ness said.

In 1979, Disney helped produce an animatronic suit with flashing eyes. Now, Albert and Alberta are rounder, softer and more breathable.

By 1986, Alberta was intro-

duced as Albert’s sidekick. Reed said the mascots are just best friends and they have each other in their hearts.

“Albert will always be Alberta’s No. 1, and Alberta will always be Albert’s No. 1,” Reed said.

They have a closet of six outfits for various occasions, such as their pink uniforms for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and their blue gameday attire for Tennessee games.

Reed, who oversees their scheduling, said the people behind the mascots have to go through training and need to be humble because the world won’t know who they are.

It’s a tradition for members of the mascot program to not reveal their identities as Albert and Alberta.

“When you choose to be a part of something like this, you know the tradition and where it’s coming from,” Reed said. “In the sense that it’s bigger than you as an individual.”

As the mascots evolve, Reed said she’s trying to expand Alberta’s presence on campus by including her in men’s sporting events.

Reed began this expansion in 2013.

Before, Alberta was limited to only women’s sporting events.

“It’s important that Albert goes to women’s volleyball just

1957: Allen donated another alligator named Albert, and it was placed in a pen in front of Century Tower.

1961: Albert was removed from campus due to health problems.

1964: Albert went missing in mid-March. Soon after, another alligator similar to Albert’s description was found tied to a flagpole on FSU’s campus.

1970: The first vinyl-costumed Albert was introduced.

1979: Walt Disney provided a $5,000 costume with animatronic features such as flashing eyes.

1984: A rounder, softer Albert mascot was debuted.

1986: Alberta was introduced as Albert’s sidekick.

2003: Albert and Alberta got their own bronze statue outside of Emerson Alumni Hall.

2011: Albert and Alberta got their own Twitter accounts. as much as Alberta goes to men’s basketball,” Reed said.

Now, Reed said Alberta does more appearances than Albert.

The duo has gained more national recognition from companies like ESPN and Nissan. Social media is the biggest factor in sharing Albert and Alberta’s brand with a young-

er generation, she said.

UF seeks to erase 2014 Homecoming memory

Even the touchdowns were pitiful.

On Oct. 18, 2014, quarterback Treon Harris faked a handoff and rolled right toward a half-empty, half-apathetic student section in the Swamp. He was met by a blitzing Missouri corner. He heaved a desperation ball just past the goal line and into a mosh pit of blue and white.

Tight end Tevin Westbrook eventually emerged from the pile with the ball, initiating a dull rumbling of sarcastic cheers and the eruption of overstated fireworks that had been gathering dust all night.

That touchdown, and the one Harris ran in with 26 seconds remaining, were all the UF offense could scrap together that chilly night in Gainesville four years ago.

The numbers are enough to make you contemplate the fabric of reality. The box score from that night the Tigers played at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium is a barren wasteland of turnovers and radioactive offense.

It’s a dilapidated shrine to everything the Gators have sought to destroy this season.

So far in 2018, the exorcism of those offensive demons is ahead of schedule. Florida has the No. 42-ranked offense in points per game (32.3) and averages an even five yards per carry. Compared to 2014’s No. 56 scoring offense (30.3 points per game) and the 4.4 yards per carry, the current squad looks like world-beaters.

The Gators don’t necessarily have to be that tomorrow to beat the current Tigers, but it couldn’t hurt. Missouri (4-4, 0-4 SEC) has lost two of its conference games to No. 6 Georgia and No. 1 Alabama by a combined 43 points, but its other pair of SEC defeats were much closer: a two-point loss against South Carolina and a one-pointer to Kentucky. Coach Dan Mullen stressed that even with no conference wins, Missouri remains a tough opponent. "They probably have the best quarterback in the league," he said. loss to the Wildcats could be all the fuel they need to pull it off.

They’re also led by Drew Lock, a quarterback some analysts saw as a dark-horse Heisman candidate before the season. He’s No. 2 in the conference in completions (169) and passing yards (2,144).

Outside of his gaudy numbers there, however, he and UF quarterback Feleipe Franks are fairly similar. Just 0.3 yards separates Franks (7.4) and Lock (7.7) in yards per attempt, and they each have 16 touchdown passes and six interceptions apiece.

That means the game could be won or lost with the ground game, where both

teams have struggled relative to the rest of the conference. But Mullen doesn’t expect the Tigers to stray away from Lock.

“They can put up points with anybody in the country,” he said. “They probably have the best quarterback in the league. (He) can make every throw you want to make. He’s got experience. He’s got poise.”

Missouri presents the greatest challenge to the Gators for the rest of the season. UF has a 69.9 percent chance to win tomorrow, according to ESPN projections. The odds increase to 74.7 percent against South Carolina next week and 77.1 percent against FSU.

Remember that name. Out of all the quarterbacks in the state of Florida, he has the highest passer rating, and it’s not even close. He has torched CUSA defenses all season, and he’ll do it again Saturday. The only other QB in the state who comes close to glancing at Morgan’s greatness is UCF’s McKenzie Milton, but even that’s a stretch.

Milton has 119 completions on 200 pass attempts. That’s not bad.

Morgan has 131 on one more attempt. That’s while splitting time with his backup throughout the first half of the season. Oh, and he’s thrown for 19 scores and just four picks.

Coach Butch Jones has this program ahead of schedule in the rebuilding process. He’ll add another brick to that job with the decimation of the Owls.

Johnson wasn’t forgotten per se, but Nembhard was supposed to be the star on top of the Christmas tree of last year’s recruiting class. Johnson was supposed to be just another ornament.

The All-American Dane: Johannes Ingildsen tackles change

Johannes Ingildsen shows up to practice with sunscreen on his face not rubbed all the way in and his freshly bleached blonde hair poking through his Gators hat.

He jokes with his teammates that he needs a good picture taken because the team keeps using bad ones, but it could just be an excuse to show off his golden locks.

Ingildsen likes to have fun with his friends before practice.

When the ball is up, however, his jovial demeanor vanishes. At a practice a few weeks before the fall season begins, he works up a quick sweat while practicing singles and doubles. He stands out on the court for how quiet he is, quite literally – Ingildsen is 6-foot-4 – but his effort sets him apart as well.

Occasionally he lets out a grunt, as most players do, when he punishes the yellow-green ball with an aggressive backhand, but otherwise, he’s relatively quiet. He doesn’t celebrate when he beats out his teammates for a point. He silently berates himself when he makes a rare mistake — a complete 180 from his attitude before practice began.

His conservative demeanor doesn’t tell the whole story — or even half of it.

Change is nothing new for Ingildsen. He made the switch from soccer to tennis before he could sit in the front seat of his parent’s car. He up and left his country to pursue the sport he loves.

That story of change begins in Copenhagen, Denmark, far away from the muggy swamp of Gainesville, Florida, where Ingildsen has already written himself into the record books with a plethora of wins and AllAmerican and All-SEC selections.

• • • He was supposed to kick balls, not hit them. At two years old, Ingildsen began playing soccer under the watchful eye of his father, Alex.

A budding talent from a young age, Ingildsen fell in love with the game.

It was his first love and is, to this day, one of his favorite sports. He follows his home club, FC Copenhagen, as well as FC Barcelona, and he still kicks the ball around when he

Denmark native Johannes Ingildsen was the fourth UF freshman to achieve All-American status in school history and the first since 2005. has free time. Admittedly, he’s not the player he once was.

His love demanded more and more of his time as he grew older, however. His mother, Mette, decided to put him in tennis when he was seven years old to give him a break from the pitch.

Ingildsen played tennis leisurely once a week, never entering competitions. Bo Thaysen, a renowned tennis coach in Denmark, saw potential in 10-year-old Ingildsen that compensated for his apparent lack of talent: the ability to learn.

Thaysen wanted to train the young Ingildsen and take him past the recreational level.

Ingildsen, however, wasn’t ready to give up soccer just yet. He was still attempting to play his favorite pastime while rising through the ranks in the tennis world.

“I was playing too much,” Ingildsen said. “Every day I was playing both soccer and tennis, so that was too much for me.”

Mette said that Thaysen, and later Mikkel Nørby, wanted to work seriously with Ingildsen. He was asked to fully commit to tennis.

Tennis won out in the end.

Johannes became as addicted to the craft as a teenager is to his/her phone.

His mother eventually had to ask him to tone down his newfound passion.

“He would spend hours playing the tennis ball against a wall in our living room,” Mette said. “We sometimes had to ask him to take a break so we could hear the news on TV.” It took some time for Ingildsen’s father to get on board with tennis becoming his son’s life – Johannes’ talent on the pitch was already there, and it was unclear what he could do on the court. Alex had viewed tennis in the past as a hobby, not something his son would end up playing full time.

Nevertheless, the family took Thaysen’s word that Johannes had the potential to become a great tennis player and ran with it.

“From that point, it went fast,” Mette said.

• • • Eight years later, a not-so-young Ingildsen was preparing for the next step in his tennis career.

“We knew that playing tennis in college in the U.S. was an option,” Mette said. “We did not have a clue about which schools or coaches were good.”

Messages on Facebook opened that door.

The social media platform was the primary method of communication Division I tennis coaches used to contact Ingildsen as he began to appear on their radar with a top-100 international ranking.

“You have to have something special to get our attention and to invest that much in traveling and risking a little bit,” Gators head coach Bryan Shelton said. “Joe certainly stood out, and we recognized that he was a guy that could come in here and make a big difference on this program.”

Former Gators assistant coach Mark Merclain traveled to Copenhagen to see Johannes play in person and joined the Ingildsen family for a dinner that sold them on UF. “He told us about the school and the tennis team without overselling it,” Mette said. “Some of the other coaches were more pushy in their approach, according to Joe.” Oklahoma, San Diego and Kentucky all made recruiting pitches as well. But a big factor for Ingildsen was the weather, which helped him narrow his destination to schools in either Florida or California.

“I’m from Denmark where it’s super, super cold like eight months a year, and I wanted some sun in my life,” Ingildsen said.

Florida’s risky investment paid off. Ingildsen returned the favor with an official visit to the school in 2015.

It was the first and only time he came to the United States before committing to Florida.

“I really liked the coaches here, the players here were super nice and everything was just really, really cool,” Ingildsen said. “So it was not in doubt that I should be here at all.”

Another change in the books.

• • • Just like the switch from soccer to tennis, Ingildsen’s transition from Denmark to the United States was not seamless.

“In the beginning the culture was kind of shocking,” Ingildsen said.

“Just the way people are. Then I had to make new friends in the beginning, everything was new, I had to learn everything in English, which I was not used to.”

school in Copenhagen, but adjusting to writing and thinking in English proved challenging.

Those difficulties resulted in academic shortcomings his freshman year.

Ingildsen originally planned to study business. But his classes proved too demanding with his status as a student-athlete. He practiced close to 20 hours every week, so he switched his major to sports management with a minor in business administration.

Another change in the books.

“I’ve always been kind of a lazy guy,” Ingildsen said. “My first priority was always tennis when I was younger, so I was not very good in school because I didn’t take the time.”

He eventually conquered those academic issues after what Shelton called “a kick in the butt” from the coaching staff and a push from his father back home. The rest was on Ingildsen.

“I’ve managed my time better since I came here,” Ingildsen said.

“Coaches really teach us how to manage our time and right now I’m just in a good rhythm.”

Ingildsen traveled back to Denmark for winter break in his first year to be with his parents and his three younger sisters: Selma, Lucca and Dicte. His return in the spring was a turning point.

“After maybe my first semester I felt like this was my home here in Florida, and I belonged here,” Ingildsen said.

It sure looked that way on the court.

He won 29 singles matches as a freshman, including a team-high eight SEC matches, and 14 doubles matches. His resume earned him a spot on the All-SEC Freshman team as well as All-American Doubles honors.

That would seem like a successful season to most. But not to Ingildsen.

“I did not think that I played that well my freshman year,” he said.

“Even though I didn’t feel I was playing that well, I still won a lot of matches my freshman year.”

But for a coach and a team preaching a one-game-at-a-time mentality, Missouri seems to be all that’s on the Gators' minds, especially after their loss to Georgia last week.

“Win or lose, it’s how you respond as you continue to go during the season,” Mullen said. “We want to see how we have to handle this adversity moving forward.”

Johnson can push the ball up the court as the point and shoot well enough to be the two, his natural position. His cutting ability makes small forward a good fit for him, and he’s big enough to get minutes at power forward.

He’s also got speed, which makes his size nearly impossible to defend.

FAU is 3-5 this year. It was close in some games and not so much in others, but the Owls did take a commanding win over Old Dominion, a team that shocked the world with a win over No. 10 Virginia Tech.

Quarterback Chris Robison has thrown for 1,645 yards and eight touchdowns, and running back Devin Singletary has run for 837 yards and 15 touchdowns.

When both of the Owls’ stars are playing well, FAU poses a huge challenge for any team it faces. Both Robison and Singletary will show up on Saturday.

Now onto the picks…

In a tie for first at 38-34 is Alanis “What is this bulls***” Thames, who erupted in a fiery, hunger-fueled rage when she saw what food was being catered for the media at the Florida-Georgia game. I’ll give you a hint, it wasn’t anything close to the potroast Tennessee had or the brisket Mississippi State served.

Then again, Mark Long wasn’t there either, so the entertainment factor was less than it is normally.

Coming in at fifth with a 3537 record is Morgan “What’s the budget?” McMullen, who budgeted three features to fill less than three pages for this sports section. We get it Morgan, you wanted to impress the returning alumni. Maybe use some size nine font to fit it all in.

In a tie for sixth at 34-38 is Mark “Alberta wants me” Stine, who is convinced Florida Gators mascot Alberta is sending him mixed signals. “Alberta’s

sending mad signals with that cheerleader uniform,” Stine said.

He has since claimed it’s just the lipstick, but still, kinda creepy.

Mark, we don’t mean to be the bearers of bad news, but it’s time for you to move on.

Also tied for sixth is the Orlando Sentinel’s Edgar “You can’t leave postgame media” Thompson, who, in addition to refusing to allow CeCe Jefferson to leave his postgame interview in Jacksonville, decided to dip early before Feleipe Franks could speak.

Johnson might not be the best player on the team at the moment. But he will be, you can count on that.

And don’t just stop it there.

He’ll eventually wind up hearing his name called in the NBA Draft somewhere along the road.

But first thing’s first. Johnson will work his way into the starting lineup before long, and the Gators will be better off for it.
