FLORAL

Hello and welcome to another edition of The Floral Pavilion brochure, packed full of new shows.
This is a really exciting edition for us, as we’re introducing some changes to the format. You’ll still find all the information on our upcoming programme, but with a few new features.
One is that we’ve changed how shows are listed – they’re now grouped by genre, not date. This makes it even easier for you to find your favourite dramas, music, comedy, family shows and star appearances, all together. Don’t worry, there’s a new calendar on the back pages, so you can still plan out your season in date order. You’ll also find more insights than ever before from behind the scenes of some of our upcoming shows. From interviews with stars like Divina de Campo, to quizzes that test your musical knowledge, we hope these give you more insight than even before into the amazing range of shows we have coming up.
We hope you enjoy these changes and that you agree that they bring you closer to our fantastic programme than ever before.

You’ll be back for the sixth time! What is it you love about our panto?
My earliest memories of stepping foot into a theatre were to see pantomimes. I was transfixed. I felt part of the performance and even now I think that’s the greatest thing about panto - that the audience are an integral part of the show. The laughter, the singing, the shouting back at us… It’s like no other art form and what makes it really special is that you know you’re part of a legacy that stretches back centuries.
What are you most looking forward to about coming back to New Brighton for Sleeping Beauty in 2025?
I’m so lucky to come back year after year! The audiences feel like they know me, and I always feel like I’m meeting up with old friends! The audiences in New Brighton never disappoint and I can’t wait to get stuck in again!
I love Sleeping Beauty.
It’s so traditional with all the elements of a great Panto – fun; laughter; a great baddie; a fabulous dame; a beauty who is fond of a nap and me being let loose like a kid in a candy shop!
"I'm so lucky to come back year after year. I feel like i'm meeting up with old friends!"

A brand-new tour of the joys of the English language with Britain’s best-loved wordsmith. Following on from her hit show ‘The Secret Life of Words’, Susie Dent is back with a brandnew collection of facts and stories from the wonderful world of words.
Have you ever wondered whether there’s a word for going to the fridge for the umpteenth time in search of something new? Or puzzled over the reason why a group of crows is called a ‘murder’, while owls form a ‘parliament’? Is teen slang actually designed to make us tear our hair out? And just how many words do we need for being drunk?
With the help of funny, insightful, and headscratching examples, Susie will entertain and educate us with her pick of language’s greatest hits.
Word Perfect will remind us just how unpredictable, wayward, and utterly magical our mother tongue can be.

With super slick showstoppers and epic camp choreo, our Queens will leave you gagging!
What will audiences enjoy most about this show?
The show is non-stop fun! It's jam-packed with all of the good stuff that people know and love. We have so much fun on stage and it just radiates into the audience, having them up singing and dancing before the night is out. It’s incredibly rare you get such a strong line-up for a one-off show, never mind a full tour, so the audiences really are in for a treat!
What’s your favourite musical, and why?
I am more a traditionalist than people might think, from what they see and hear on TV and social media. My real passion is old school musical theatre. I love The King And I, anything Rodgers and Hammerstein really, as well as the classics like The Phantom of The Opera. Of course, we all love a bit of Cabaret and Chicago too… I’d love to be in that one day!
What’s your favourite song from a musical?
Oooh, that’s a hard one! There’s just too many. I really enjoy singing Man of La Mancha! There’s a very funny arrangement by Linda Eder which I love to do. Mary Sunshine’s song from Chicago is another favourite. But who can go wrong with a classic like All That Jazz?

What do you love about being in the show?
What’s not to love? We play in front of audiences which are absolutely delighted with the performance and that’s all anybody in the show business can really ask for. The whole day leads up to that one performance and it must be top draw. When the audience reacts in the way that they do, we know we’ve done our job.
What is it that keeps audiences coming back?
The quality of the production and the cast. The show reinvents itself every year, so people know what they’re coming to see but not quite what’s in it. We are the only show that changes its production annually.
Do you have a favourite memory?
There’s a few. Playing in front of, and impersonating Cliff Richard was fun. Appearing at the London Palladium was incredible for everyone in the company. If I had to pick one for myself it would be my Mick Jagger soliloquy.
You’ve been coming to the Floral for over 15 years - any particular memories?
We find the audiences at New Brighton particularly knowledgeable about pop music, understandably, being where the Beatles were. They always appreciate the quality and the fun that we have in the performances and always make it a memorable show.

“Being on tour is something I really enjoy, seeing people and being with people is part of my experience as a performer. I will be playing songs from the catalogue and from the solo albums I have recorded over the last 23 years. My story is told through stand up and some sit down, a trip back to my council estate in South London, from my very first lyrical expression to the dressing rooms of this show.
I will be joined on stage by Melvin Duffy on his pedal steel and together we will deliver an evening of warm, and I hope, funny stories. Melvin's playing is outstanding and I feel so lucky to have him as my side-man. My new songs written with Boo Hewerdine tell a story of celebration, 25 years writing lyrics, and playing on stages big and small. A journey I look back on with great fondness.
This show is not just a look back on 50 lyrical years, it asks, what happened? What happened to all those years and mates I grew up with before I formed a band?"
