Massing Concept

The cascading form is inspired inspired by the traditional soil cut-and-fill method where excavated soil is placed aside to create a landform. The idea is to strike a balance between building form and materials. We utilize soil excavated from the site to form the landscape for the urban farm terraces.

Winter Month/Heating Mode

During cold months, the geothermal ground source heat pump becomes a source for passive heating strategies. The radiant floor heating system keeps the interior warm by thermal radiation which objects in the building radiates the captured heat in turn. This is an efficient heaing/ cooling system as it works for both ways in an efficient and stable method.

Spring-Summer Months/ Passive Cooling Mode

Air enters from operable windows of the lobby and rises up through the thermal chimney and out the roof. The continuous movement of air in and out of the building creates a continous air convection cycle that facilitates natural ventilation in the building. Balconies act as overhang to shade the rooms while being used as semi-open space.Bio-retention pond collects rainwater runoff which is a source for hydronic heating/ cooling system and grey-water system.

Wood structures and Wood battens facade are used to minimize the carbon footprint of the building and echo to the idea of soil, urban farming and the nature.

The assemblies of the facade is designed with continuous protection layers for water, vapour, air and thermal control, in order to provide an energy efficient building.

5-year proposed plan - transforming parking lot and garage into the plaza entering the laneway and retails

25-year proposed plan - transforming all the garage into shops and cafe

Existing Roof

5/25/50-year proposed plan for laneway redevelopment

This project examined the potential of Toronto laneways as a vibrant, innovative and emerging public realm in our city in form of a commercial street development in 5/25/50 years. The proposal suggested the transformation of existing garage into commercial purpose. This includes shops, cafes and leisure space at the laneway at Kensington Market where small business are centered. The idea is to blur the boundary between street and laneway by intoducing street life into laneway.

Envision Diagram for 25-years

In 25 years the project suggested that all garage would be transformed into commercial use like retails and restaurants. An elevated platform will be formed on the second level to create an open leisure space for the neighborhood.

Oxford Street

In 50 years, it is envisioned that the laneway in Kensington Market will completely transformed to a commercial and recreational street. By connecting the roof of the shops with the elevated platform, the shops at ground level can expand to the upper level with more outdoor seatings and green space.

Green Space

50-years Envision Plan

Some of the shops can expand their business by building the second storey, creating a second level of street. This can utilize the area of the laneway while creating a more vibrant, dynamic street to the neighborhood.
