In the center of Athens, where Sophocles and Socrates walked, today one sees hundreds dwell in the squalor, fighting for survival. Immigrants, addicts, prostitutes, beggars. Once there was a sanctuary in this chaos. The Polyclinic Hospital of Athens. The hospital of the poor. There, priestmonk Porphyrios lived and attained holiness, while serving as a pastor at the hospital’s small church for 33 years.
