Outstanding Foundation
Lennar Foundation Nominated by Broward College
With more than 30 years of leaving transformative footprints throughout many communities, the Lennar Foundation continues to impact our local community as well as across the nation. The Lennar Foundation was established in Florida in 1989 and has supported organizations involved in homeless rehabilitation, elder care, medical research, at-risk children, and education, to name a few. Overall, the Lennar Foundation actively dedicates time, resources, and money toward programs designed to uplift those who are less fortunate, making them a beacon of hope and opportunities. The Lennar Foundation exemplifies true philanthropy in tackling the foundational structures, or lack thereof, in its extraordinary commitment to fostering community empowerment through educational excellence.
The Lennar Foundation empowers bold innovation through Broward UP to create long-lasting transformative community impact. Six zip codes that comprise the Broward UP municipalities are plagued with the highest unemployment rates in Broward County and contain 61% of Broward County's population of nearly 2.5 million. Having the lowest post-secondary education attainment rates in the county, Broward College is determined to change that and Lennar Foundation's support has been instrumental in these efforts. The Lennar Foundation has empowered Broward UP to provide alternative entry points for students to begin their educational journey and finish well. Higher education includes continuing education courses that allow students to build technical and soft skills, competence, and confidence in their desired field. Through the Broward Up initiative, Broward College helps students transition from continuing education to degree-seeking status to accelerate technical certificates and associate degree programs. Based on the above and more, the Foundation's leadership and generosity have propelled an extensive ripple effect among those served by the Broward UP initiatives. Locally, some refer to such immense reverberations as the "Broward effect." Broward UP's emphasis on proximate access and community-based education resonates deeply with AFP's dedication to thinking creatively and cultivating strong partnerships with like-minded organizations and individuals. In that regard, Broward UP is now collaborating with nearly 50 partners, including municipalities, nonprofit organizations, businesses, and local agencies. 13

History of AFP The National Society of Fundraising Executives (NSFRE) was officially chartered by the state of New York on June 1, 1960, but its actual beginnings were in the imagination and visions of three fundraisers in New York City - Benjamin Sklar of Brandeis University, William R. Simms of the National Urban League and Harry Rosen of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies. They agreed to form a national society of fundraisers but realized they would need an individual with greater prestige and more recognizable credentials to provide leadership. Dr. Abel Hanson of Columbia Teacher’s College was their candidate. With the charter, the National Society of Fundraising Executives (NSFRE) was born. The purposes the founders had in mind for the organization were outlined in the Articles of Incorporation: •
To aid fundraisers in the performance of their professional duties
•
To unite those engaged in the profession of fundraising
•
To formulate, promote and interpret to organizations, agencies and the public the objectives of fundraising and the role of those who practice it
•
To promote and maintain high standards of public service and conduct
•
To exchange ideas and experiences and to collect and disseminate information of value to fundraisers and the public
•
To promote, sponsor and encourage study, research and instruction in the field of fundraising by means of courses in established institutions of learning and by other means
•
To encourage and sponsor the granting of awards and fellowships in recognized institutions of learning for study and research in the field of fundraising
Dr. Hanson wrote: “It is probably too early to identify fundraising as a true profession. But it is clear that among those who serve the agencies of our free society as fundraisers, the desire to improve their work efforts is strong, and positive steps are being taken, of a professional nature, to enhance the effectiveness of the agencies they serve. Today, AFP has initiated several interrelated projects to launch its next decade and lead the field of fundraising further toward the goal of being a true profession conducting ethical fundraising practices in support of philanthropy. Donor Bill of Rights Association of Fundraising Professionals Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the quality of life. To assure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the nonprofit organizations and causes they are asked to support, we declare that all donors have these rights: To be informed of the organization's mission, of the way the organization intends to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes. To be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization's governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities. To have access to the organization's most recent financial statements.
