What’s it like to study at Flinders?

For most students, studying at Flinders will involve a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials, perhaps laboratory or practical classes, fieldwork or work placements, as well as time for individual study.

Tutorials/Seminars

Tutorials are new to most people entering university. In tutorials, students and academic staff meet in small numbers in a somewhat informal setting so that topics raised in lectures can be discussed further and points can be clarified.

Studying on your own

Most of our courses will include a series of lectures, each lasting about 50 minutes. These usually occur in a lecture theatre with the whole student group taught together. They can be given by various members of teaching staff, who are experts in the subjects being taught.

Practical work is an important opportunity for some students to test the concepts and methods introduced in lectures and tutorials. You will usually work in a small team or in partnership with another student.

Many courses offer work placements which give students experience in an industry, government or community setting.

You may also be involved in group work in which you collaborate with other students on a project activity or in preparing for a presentation. This encourages you to take different roles and responsibilities, to share expertise and tackle tasks that you would not be able to undertake alone.

Your independent reading, research and study, guided by lecturers and tutors, will enable you to prepare for topics in greater depth. This is especially important when you are undertaking an assignment, an essay, a seminar/tutorial/presentation or preparing for an exam.

Flinders offers two admissions cycles for undergraduate courses each year: • The January intake (Semester 1); applications open in August for commencement the following year. All courses are offered in this cycle.

The SATAC University Guide is only published for the January intake and is available for purchase from late July each year from newsagencies and is free through schools for current year 12 students.

• Mid year intake (Semester 2) applications open in mid May for commencement in July that year. Not all courses are offered mid year.

Flinders also has a range of access schemes for students who have studied science and mathematics subjects, Indigenous Australians, rural and isolated students and students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The Bachelor of Technology (Aquaculture) provides graduates with specialised knowledge and training in aquaculture technology and business management.

It is the only university course of its kind in South Australia and combines a strong background in natural sciences with an understanding of health, safety, practical and management issues, and business and communication skills.

The Bachelor of Archaeology prepares students for a professional career in archaeology. Seven core topics provide a solid grounding in archaeological theory and method, the management of cultural heritage, and the archaeology of Australia and its Indigenous people.

This degree develops graduates who can help communities and businesses to better manage our environment and its resources. It deals with issues such as water resources, biodiversity, coastal management, pollution, land degradation, energy use, climate change and sustainable resource use.

Environmental science combines aspects of biology, earth science and chemistry, and applies scientific techniques and solutions to issues of ecosystem sustainability. There are specialisations in three rapidly emerging environmental areas: • Coasts and catchments • Environmental forensics • Global water resources.

This Flinders degree is unique in South Australia and nationally.

The Bachelor of Technology (Forensic and Analytical Chemistry) combines studies in all aspects of chemistry with related sciences such as biology and earth sciences, mathematical and computer skills and a thorough grounding in industrial practice and the relevant areas of our legal system. It offers a basis for postgraduate studies in radiology, pathology, pharmacology and other fields. The course is also a preparation for the graduate-entry medical and health programs at Flinders.

Graduates are eligible for registration with the Nurses Board of South Australia as a Registered General Nurse. The degree is also recognised interstate. As well as traditional roles in hospitals, nurses are employed by community health centres, aged care centres, community nursing services, local councils, in industry and rural and remote settings.

NUTRITION AND DIETETICS

SATAC Code: 214381 | 2009 TER: 95.95 This degree produces Nutritionists and Dietitians who interpret scientific knowledge about food then translate it into practical information to help people change their eating habits and improve their health. They know about the nature, management and prevention of diet-related diseases and the social and psychological factors that influence what people eat.

This course ensures that all paramedics have the skills, knowledge and attitudes to enable them to provide sophisticated emergency pre-hospital care and ensure seamless care from site to hospital.

Speech pathologists facilitate communication skills by working with people or through research. They treat people affected by surgery, with brain damage or disease of the nervous system and people with difficulties acquiring normal speech sounds or language. Graduates are prepared for entry into other health professions such as audiology or medicine.

This integrated degree program aims to deepen the understanding and expression of Christian faith. It is specifically the study of Christian traditions and thought and goes beyond traditional teachings to examine theology alongside other fields of study and issues critical to contemporary society and culture.

Foundation Course

6 months part-time. Commences March each year and finishes in September.

Entry Requirements: None.

Fees: $125 per topic (to complete the course you study a minimum of four topics).

Pathways: 3000 students have used the Foundation Course to move on to bachelor degrees at Flinders.

This Foundation Course is open to everyone who has not previously studied at university – there are no prerequisite or entry requirements.

The course is designed to help you develop strategies and skills to become a successful student and, introduces you to some major fields of university study. Application is direct to the university.

Combined Degrees

A combined degree is a combination of two Flinders bachelor degrees. As a combined degree graduate you will gain two qualifications in just 1 to 1.5 years of extra study. Our combined degree programs are designed to enhance students’ educational, academic and professional qualifications whilst minimising the cost of your studies.

Flinders combined degrees allow you to undertake in-depth study in exciting combinations that aren’t usually available in single degrees. These combinations give graduates an advantage for employment in a competitive and rapidly changing workplace, both in Australia and internationally.

DIPLOMA IN LANGUAGE

Flinders offers all students the opportunity to major in a language in conjunction with any undergraduate course. The Diploma in Language is designed to provide students with competence in a chosen language which adds greater portability to their qualifications. You will complete a total of one extra year of study and graduate with both your chosen degree and the Diploma in Language.
