We currently have over 350 Indigenous students studying across a broad range of degrees including medicine, law, education, health, sciences and information technology.

Orientation program

Cadetships and internships

As a new student you are invited to attend our orientation program, which is aimed at facilitating your transition into university. Run in February and July, the program focuses on cultural identity and developing foundation university study skills. It’s a great opportunity for you to meet and get to know other Indigenous students and staff.

A great way to gain work experience in your field, cadetships and internships offer paid work placements during university breaks for Indigenous students.

Indigenous Student Support Officers (ISSOs)

You are welcome to drop into Yunggorendi Mande at any time. We provide a culturally safe space where you can relax, have a cup of coffee, watch TV, catch up with staff and fellow students, or access the computer lab and printer/photocopying facilities.

ISSOs work directly with students and provide one-on-one support throughout the student lifecycle on a range of matters, from pre-enrolment advice through to post graduate studies and assist with pathways to further study or employment. Staff can also provide you with a referral service to health and counselling, disability or any other services you may need to access.

Academic skill development and advocacy As graduates themselves, our learning advisers are equipped to support you in the development of your academic skills.

This can include time management, essay writing, exam preparation, researching, and referencing. They can also provide academic advocacy to help you resolve any issues that arise during your study.

Our team of highly qualified Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff connect to Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities on local, national and international levels.

Culturally safe space

Yunggorendi Tutorial Program (YTP) YTP provides free tutoring for Indigenous students enrolled in degree programs at Flinders. YTP connects you to a tutor who has expertise in your subject area and can support you to develop your understanding and critical engagement in the curriculum.

Scholarships Appropriate financial support can often be a barrier to a student’s success. Flinders has a range of scholarships available for Indigenous students to assist in meeting accommodation, study and living costs. There are also a large number of external scholarships available that staff can assist you in applying for.

Office of Indigenous Strategy & Engagement Yunggorendi Student Engagement is part of Flinders University’s Office of Indigenous Strategy & Engagement (OISE). OISE has responsibility for providing strategic leadership for the University in relation to the Indigenisation of its programs, the recognition of Indigenous knowledges and perspectives, the promotion of teaching and research in Indigenous studies, the employment of Indigenous staff, and engagement with Indigenous communities and issues.

FLINDERS IN THE NORTHERN TERRITORY FLINDERS UNIVERSITY’S PRESENCE IN THE NORTHERN TERRITORY SUPPORTS OUR COMMITMENT TO HEALTH RESEARCH, EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT IN THE NT AND PROVIDES UNFORGETTABLE PLACEMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR MANY OF OUR STUDENTS. Flinders in the Northern Territory includes: Northern Territory Medical Program (NTMP) You can study Flinders’ medical degree in the Northern Territory through the Northern Territory Medical Program. Up to 24 places are available, with priority given to NT applicants. Twelve of these places are domestic graduate-entry and 12 are domestic undergraduate entry.

Indigenous Australians can apply to study medicine in both Adelaide and the Northern Territory through the Indigenous Entry Stream (IES).

Indigenous graduates with a GAMSAT result may choose to apply via our graduate-entry pathway, or via the IES pathway.

Poche Centre for Indigenous Health and Wellbeing The vision of the Poche Centre for Indigenous Health and Wellbeing in Alice Springs is to contribute to the improved health outcomes of Aboriginal people in remote communities, through high quality research, education, and training. The centre achieves this vision in partnership with Aboriginal communities. It forms part of a network of Poche Centres across Australia that includes its sister centre at Flinders University in Adelaide.

For the third year you then apply for transfer to the course in South Australia.

Alternatively, you can complete the Bachelor of Science (Nutrition) at Charles Darwin University, and then apply for the two-year Master of Nutrition and Dietetics at Flinders University.

Centre for Remote Health The Centre for Remote Health (CRH), a joint venture between Flinders and Charles Darwin University, offers a broad range of educational activities for health professionals working in remote regions of Australia. CRH offers an extended program of short courses for health professionals working in remote communities, and delivers a postgraduate program in remote and Indigenous health.

INDIGENOUS ALUMNI OVER 350 INDIGENOUS STUDENTS HAVE GRADUATED FROM FLINDERS UNIVERSITY SINCE 1970.

Our first Indigenous student, John Moriarty AM, graduated from Flinders in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts.

John was followed closely by the late Ken Wanganeen, who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in 1973. In recognition of Ken’s academic achievement and his extensive involvement in campus life, the University established the Ken Wanganeen medal, awarded annually to the Indigenous student with the highest grade point average.

As a graduate, you will receive lifetime membership with our alumni community, which currently includes over 100,000 alumni in 116 countries. This will provide you with unique opportunities to network with fellow graduates and to contribute positively to the ongoing life of our University, with opportunities to connect and mentor current and future generations of Indigenous students.

Kris Wilson

BA Flin John is a Yanyuwa man from Borroloola in the Northern Territory. A part of the Stolen Generation, John was a keen soccer player in his youth, representing South Australia 17 times and in 1960 being the first Indigenous Australian selected for the National Soccer Team. John is recognised nationally and internationally in the field of design, has been an active member of various Indigenous political organisations, and is a well-known philanthropist. John received the Award of the Degree of Doctor of the University honoris causa in 2016.

BLaw Flin, MLaw, UNSW Kris grew up in the town of Quorn in the Flinders Ranges. Kris graduated with a Bachelor of Law from Flinders in 2012, undertook his Masters of Laws (Media and Technology) at the University of New South Wales and is now one of the first intake of students to study at Oxford University’s Centre for Doctoral Training in Cyber Security. Kris also worked as an Academic Adviser in Yunggorendi Student Engagement and is keen to continue to help and inspire other Aboriginal students.

BSpPath Flin “Initially I found university challenging. Coming out straight from Year 12 I discovered that there were greater expectations on you to be independent with your learning. Flinders University has a wide range of great resources and services for students to access which helped me to enjoy my studies. University was great opportunity to meet new, like-minded people and form new friendships. Within my Speech Pathology cohort there were two Indigenous students. I would encourage other Indigenous people to look this profession, particularly if you are considering a career in Allied Health.”

Current Flinders University student In 2012, Ashum commenced her university education, beginning with Flinders University’s Foundation Studies course. It was while studying her Behavioural Science Degree that she discovered an interest in studying law. A criminology topic sparked her interest and she added law to her studies. Now in her 5th year of the Double Degree in Law & Behavioural Science at Flinders University, Ashum plans to complete her degrees mid-2018. The attraction to law? Ashum was drawn to law with a desire to contribute to overcoming inequality in the justice system, especially for Indigenous people. After graduating, Ashum would like to practice criminal law. She also plans to eventually undertake a Masters in Clinical Psychology.

WHAT CAN I STUDY? UNIVERSITY STUDY IS AVAILABLE AT A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT LEVELS, DEPENDING ON YOUR PRIOR STUDY AND EXPERIENCE.

Most students begin with an undergraduate degree. If you want to continue with more specialised study, there are several honours and postgraduate options.

Undergraduate study

The below diagram outlines how you can progress through your time at university: from your first undergraduate degree to postgraduate qualifications.

PhD

A program leading to a Bachelor degree

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs normally extend over three years full-time (of part-time equivalent) in a chosen area of study and may involve research work.

Postgraduate study Study undertaken after the completion of an undergraduate degree, usually in a specialised field

MASTERS DEGREE Postgraduate award usually 2 years (or full time equivalent) which focuses on one area of specialisation after the successful completion of at least a bachelor degree.

GRADUATE DIPLOMA Postgraduate award usually following the successful completion of a bachelor degree or graduate certificate.

WHETHER YOU’RE COMING TO FLINDERS FROM HIGH SCHOOL, TAFE OR AS A MATUREAGE STUDENT, MAKING THE TRANSITION TO UNIVERSITY LIFE CAN INVOLVE MANY CHANGES. Yunggorendi’s orientation program is held for all Indigenous students who are new to Flinders, and helps you get a handle on what to expect at university. If you apply through the Indigenous Admissions Scheme, it is essential for you to attend orientation to ensure you get the best possible start to your studies.

Orientation provides you with a complete introduction to Flinders and helps you develop skills to help you be successful in your studies.

You’ll have the opportunity to improve your academic writing and public speaking skills and to participate in lectures, tutorials and workshops. These activities introduce you to what university life is like and give you the chance to connect with other Indigenous students and staff. You’ll get to know the campus and find out about the support services available to students at Flinders.

INDIGENOUS TOPICS WANT TO INCLUDE INDIGENOUS TOPICS IN YOUR STUDIES? FLINDERS OFFERS A NUMBER OF TOPICS THAT ARE DEDICATED TO SHARING INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGES TO ALL STUDENTS AT FLINDERS UNIVERSITY AT UNDERGRADUATE AND POSTGRADUATE LEVELS. Undergraduate Have you considered enrolling in a topic in the Indigenous studies minor sequence in the Bachelor of Arts (BA)? Indigenous studies can be taken as a topic or minor sequence.

Flinders offers topics in Indigenous studies and Indigenous education with general relevance to students whose interest and future career path involve understanding Indigenous Australian cultures, histories and knowledges. Both areas are increasingly attractive to students who wish to be involved in Indigenous schooling, education and Indigenous affairs.

Indigenous studies can be taken as a topic or a minor sequence.

THERE’S MORE THAN ONE WAY TO GET INTO YOUR DEGREE ADMISSION PATHWAYS At Flinders we recognise that every prospective student is an individual and that what works for one might not be right for another.

That’s why we provide various admission pathways into Flinders University and your preferred degree. You’re encouraged to explore your options and find the entry path that’s right for you.

Year 12 entry The majority of Year 12 applicants enter university via the traditional competitive entry method, where offers are made to eligible applicants with the highest selection rank until all places in the degree are filled. Your selection rank is used by Flinders to assess your admission to a course and is based on your ATAR plus any adjustment factors for which you are eligible.

The 2018 selection rank shown for each degree indicates the lowest rank for which an offer was made to an applicant in that degree for that year (including any adjustment factors). It is provided only as a guide for 2019 entry as it may change from year to year.

Adjustment factors Adjustment factors (formerly referred to as bonus points) may be used in combination with your ATAR to derive your course selection rank. Adjustment factors may be available for South Australian Year 12 students applying for entry to Flinders in 2019: the SA Universities Equity Scheme (UES) and the SA Language, Literacy and Mathematics Bonus Scheme (LLM).

Guaranteed entry selection rank Achieve a selection rank equal to or above the published guaranteed entry selection rank and you’ll be guaranteed a place at Flinders.

All you need to do is ensure you have listed Flinders degrees first in your preferences and you will be offered a place in the highest Flinders degree preference that you are eligible for in 2019.

uniTEST

Adult entry

If you’re a school leaver, uniTEST is your chance to increase your options to gain a place in your preferred degree. uniTEST is designed for school leavers and complements existing selection criteria by enhancing your overall selection rank.

The adult entry scheme enables people aged 18 years and over to apply to study at Flinders via the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). Applications are made via SATAC.

Flinders UniLeap

If you have completed at least one semester of full-time equivalent study at university, you may be able to transfer to study at Flinders University using your grade point average (GPA).

Flinders UniLeap can help you qualify for entry into a Flinders University degree in four weeks. It’s a free intensive four-week program that has been designed for school leavers to develop their independent learning skills and prepare them for university study.

Foundation Studies The Foundation Studies program has been designed to introduce you to university study in a supportive learning environment. Open to people from all backgrounds, Foundation Studies provides a pathway to gain entry to most degrees at Flinders and offers guaranteed entry into some degrees.

TAFElink Flinders offers guaranteed entry to selected degrees for applicants who have completed a TAFE/VET certificate IV or higher-level qualification, as long as degree prerequisites are met. Importantly, your TAFE/VET qualification does not need to be related to your selected area of study at Flinders.

TAFE SA dual offers You can apply for a TAFE SA# diploma or advanced diploma that is linked to a Flinders degree. You’ll receive an offer to both TAFE SA and Flinders University. On successful completion of the TAFE course, you’ll have secured an offer for a Flinders degree.

Tertiary transfer

Indigenous Admission Scheme (IAS) The IAS provides an alternative pathway into university. If you’re unsure whether you will get a high enough ATAR score for your course, or if you are over 18 and a non-school leaver, then the IAS provides an alternative entry pathway.

BACHELOR OF GENERAL STUDIES The Bachelor of General Studies is a flexible degree that provides a sound basis of knowledge in an area of your choice.

It is designed to prepare you with communication skills, a firm grasp of ethics, and the confidence to make connections across geographical, disciplinary, social and cultural boundaries. Successful completion of the first year to the required standard also provides you with guaranteed entry into a range of our degrees.

FLINDERS GIVES YOU MORE THAN A QUALIFICATION A UNIVERSITY QUALIFICATION PROVIDES YOU WITH MORE JOB OPTIONS. BUT A FLINDERS DEGREE PREPARES YOU FOR A SATISFYING CAREER. Work-Integrated Learning Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) enables you to gain work experience while you study.

Flinders aims to provide each and every student with access to a WIL opportunity during their studies through placements, practicums, field studies, and simulated workplace settings and assessment activities.

Careers and Employability Service The Careers and Employability Service helps give you the edge in your career.

The Service provides a diverse range of programs and support, including job postings, access to employers, tailored careers advice, comprehensive range of career resources, industry mentoring, and professional development opportunities, like the University’s Horizon Award.

Combined degrees A combined degree is a combination of two Flinders bachelor degrees. As a combined degree graduate you will have two qualifications in just one to one-and-a-half years of extra study.

Our combined degree programs are designed to enhance your educational, academic and professional qualifications while minimising the cost and length of your studies. Flinders combined degrees allow you to undertake in-depth study in exciting combinations that aren’t usually available in single degrees.

Many graduates believe that a combined degree gives them an advantage for employment.

Bachelor of Letters The Bachelor of Letters is available to study alongside any degree at Flinders and enables you to study creative writing, English or a language to enhance your career prospects.

You will graduate with two qualifications.

INDIGENOUS ADMISSIONS SCHEME (IAS) THE INDIGENOUS ADMISSIONS SCHEME (IAS) PROVIDES THE OPPORTUNITY FOR ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER PEOPLE TO APPLY FOR ENTRY INTO FLINDERS UNDERGRADUATE COURSES. Yunggorendi Student Engagement manages this scheme together with the Flinders Admissions Office.

If you’re an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person who has finished school, either with or without an ATAR score, or you’re a mature-age applicant, we encourage you to access and benefit from admission to Flinders through the IAS.

To be eligible for the IAS, you must fulfil all of the following requirements: • be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent • identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander • be accepted as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander in the community in which you live or have lived This is in line with the Australian Government definition.

Your educational background, employment experience, community involvement and personal situation will be assessed in your written application and at an interview.

The interview panel will consist of a Yunggorendi staff member, an academic representative and an Indigenous community member who will consider your communication skills and commitment to study along with your written application.

Flinders will advise you as soon as possible whether your application has been successful and provide recommendations to help you achieve your goals.

If your application to SATAC is lodged after the closing date, you may be asked to pay an additional late fee on top of your lodgement fee. Please contact Yunggorendi Student Engagement if this happens and we may be able to assist you.

“I AM AN ADNYAMATHANHA AND NGARRINDJERI WOMAN IN MY FIRST YEAR MASTERS DEGREE STUDYING ARCHAEOLOGY AND HERITAGE MANAGEMENT.” “My journey to uni began when I was able to visit Flinders University around year 10.

I always loved history, and during my visit I grabbed an archaeology brochure.

In high school I participated in English-based subjects as I really enjoyed writing and I managed to get accepted into Uni through completing my SACE, even though my ATAR wasn’t exactly the best.

I was accepted into the Bachelor of Archaeology in 2013 and I graduated at the beginning of 2016.

During those three years I worked hard and received the Ken Wanganeen medal while also being accepted in my current degree.

OTHER SERVICES TO SUPPORT YOU Student Learning Centre The Student Learning Centre provides learning support for Flinders University students, ranging from writing and maths support to assistance with study and timemanagement skills.

Transition Office The Transition Office coordinates a number of successful programs aimed at assisting you at all stages of your transition to university.

Health, counselling & disability services When you enrol at Flinders, you will have access to confidential and professional health, counselling and disability services including GPs and nurses for emergency and routine medical care. We can also assist you with equal opportunity concerns.
