The Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce Foundation is proud to present the first in a series of workforce training sessions developed to build and enhance skills needed to become high-performance individuals, teams, and organizations.

BUILDING HIGH PERFORMANCE TEAMS

Wednesday, Aug 16 & Friday, Aug 18 | 8AM – 12PM

A team is a group, but a group is not necessarily a team. In this course you will learn the vital elements and characteristics of high-performing teams. Your employees will gain the skills and confidence to pursue excellence through shared goals, open communication, clear expectations, and a strong sense of accountability among their teams. ($250 for members, $300 non-members)

CUSTOMER SERVICE EXCELLENCE

Tuesday, Aug 29 & Thursday, Aug 31 | 8AM – 12PM

Nothing speaks loader of your organization than the support you offer your customers both before and after they buy and use your products or services. In this course will examine the customer experience of both external and internal customers. Your employees will learn the importance of a proactive and personalized approach to customer service. They gain understanding and skills in empathy, problem solving, communication, active listening, patience, tenacity, adaptability, and resourcefulness. ($250 for members, $300 non-members)

DEVELOPING SUPERVISORS & MANAGERS

Tuesday, Sept 12 & Thursday, Sept 14 | 8AM – 12PM

Leadership matters and is vital to taking your organization to the next levels. Most people become leaders because they are experts in a certain area. Many new leaders have no leadership training or mentors to help grow and nurture leadership skills. This session will examine leadership theories and best practices. Participants will gain skills and knowledge in effective communication, motivating people, managing conflict, and creating an environment for success ($250 for members, $300 non-members).

We are offering this training on a low or no cost model. We accomplish this by acting as your liaison to secure Federal Incumbent Workforce Training (IWT) grant funds available through the Coconino County Workforce Development Board. This will provide qualified organizations with 50-90% reimbursement for fees on any training we provide.

The Chamber directly serves 950 member businesses and nonprofits and engages with community leaders across the entire state and our elected leaders city, county, statewide and more. We provide a variety of programs and services for member businesses including: social media communications and relationship building events; economic development activities; business and educational partnerships;military affairs and manufacturing focus;and we serve as a strong business advocate in support of rules, regulations and policies that are a boost to economic success for our constituents and helping job creation and retention.

When those not associated with the Chamber ask me what BUSINESS ARE WE IN, I have so many answers that it could be overwhelming. Easy to understand ARE OUR BRAND VALUES that we serve as a trusted Convener and Connector for the business realm and the community at large. We always operate with a Results-Driven Focus. We are a proven Hub of Information within the business community due to our 132 year legacy locally. We are a proud Defender of Business Values as mentioned previously and we strive always to foster a Culture of Collaboration in our community.

We operate through Board of Directors leadership and a professional team of executives who understand the area we serve and are passionate about the success of business. Our motto stands tall and strong and is: WHY THE CHAMBER: BECAUSE A HEALTHY BUSINESS CLIMATE AND A VIBRANT COMMUNITY ARE INSEPARABLE .

People come and people go. Businesses open and businesses close. Communities grow and communities change. But one thing for certain across this great land of ours is that a strong community business climate usually has a strong Chamber in the background covering all the

bases that tall order takes and helping businesses one at a time or sector by sector with the resources they need to grow and prosper.

We are extremely grateful to every single investor in the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce. We are all in this together and together we influence the place we live, work and play in a very positive manner. Enjoy the rest of summer! Be healthy and keep your families strong.

Chamber Hosts Governor Hobbs, Community Business Leader Roundtable

Last month Governor Katie Hobbs and her staff met with local business leaders at the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce for the first of nine meetings while in town. Greater Flagstaff Chamber President and CEO Julie Pastrick presided over a discussion of key challenges faced by the local business community. Organizations represented at the table included: ALLO Fiber Company, APS, Arizona Snowbowl, Foothills Bank, Katalyst Space Technology, Nestlé Purina PetCare Company, Pinnacle Building Services, Sobo Associates LLC, Toasted Owl Restaurants, Warner’s Nursery and Landscape Co. and W. L. Gore & Associates.

Across the board the foremost issue expressed by the group was the challenge of maintaining workforce due to housing shortages and the resultant high cost of living associated with Flagstaff. J. R. Murray Chief Development Officer for Arizona Snowbowl spoke about a common issue facing other ski areas that are that are commonly associated with towns that carry a similar high cost of living. Murray spoke to strategies leveraged by other ski areas whereby land is leased from the United States Forest Service to develop independent workforce housing- reducing strain on local housing resources and providing employees with affordable options while reducing commuter traffic.

Cecily Maniaci, Chamber Board of Director and owner of Toasted Owl Restaurants echoed the challenges of maintaining staff who can't afford to live in Flagstaff despite the recently raised minimum wage of $16.80 per hour, a sentiment also emphasized by Jeff Hughes of W. L. Gore & Associates, who's higher-wage employees share the same challenge. Each year The Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce partners with The Center for Regional Economic Competitiveness to compile data for the Cost of Living Index. 2nd quarter data places Flagstaff at 114.1% of the national average for composite costs, with housing costs in Flagstaff at 138.4% of the national average.

Other issues presented included broadband infrastructure. Local business owner Fady Ebeid, who recently acquired Pinnacle Building Services spoke to the challenge of communicating with employees outside of the limited range of current wireless range.

Chamber Board Director Mike Horton of ALLO Fiber Company expressed the need for increased state and federal support in their effort to expand broadband networks throughout northern Arizona. Governor Hobbs responded by highlighting her administration's recent allocation of federal dollars to assist with these expansions.

A key topic discussed was the challenge of addressing change as Flagstaff continues to draw new residents seeking the attractions of the area. Guillermo Cortes of the Chamber board of directors and engineering firm Shephard–Wesnitzer Inc. gave cogent remarks regarding the need to plan for and direct growth rather than letting growth happen haphazardly.

The Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce was honored to sit down with Governor Hobbs, establishing a relationship with state leadership while serving as convener to local business interests. The Chamber looks forward to collaborative efforts that will address the challenges faced by our community and advocating on behalf of businesses and non-profits throughout northern Arizona.

2023 Chamber of Commerce July 4th Parade, Thank you Volunteers!

The downtown Fourth of July Parade presented by the Flag Chamber is a favorite holiday tradition amongst locals and this year's parade was a stand-out event. Kicking off the morning was the Downtown Mile hosted by Run Flagstaff. This dash through town draws 800+ runners from far and wide of all ability levels to sprint with the spirit of the 4th. The Flagstaff Fourth Parade has been named by Conde Naste as one of the top small town parades in the U.S. and this year's turnout in both entries and spectators was one of the largest in recent years. The Fourth of July Parade is not only a chance to celebrate the founding of our country, it's an opportunity to take pride in our home at 7000ft and to gather as a community. Thank you Flagstaff!

The parade couldn't happen without the help of the amazing team of community-focused volunteers who get up early to help stage entries, assist with the flow and tidy up the downtown area afterwards. Heartfelt thanks to you all!

Flagstaff City Election November 2023

The City of Flagstaff is conducting an election this fall with the Election Day November 7, 2023. There will be no polling places on Election Day. All registered voters in the City of Flagstaff, effective October 10, 2023, will receive a ballot via mail from the County Elections Department. The last day to register to vote for this election is October 10, 2023. Ballots will mail and early voting begins on October 11, 2023.

The November election ballot will contain 19 city charter amendments proposed by Mayor & Council for voter consideration and one referendum (Proposition 480) validated by the City Clerk seeking to overturn Mayor & Council’s recent support for rezoning approximately 98 acres of land to support construction of a new hospital at 1120 W Purple Sage Trail in Flagstaff.

A list of the 19 proposed city charter amendments and details related to the rezoning case referendum, Prop 480, can be found at https://www.flagstaff.az.gov/2105/ Elections.

The Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has supported the request by our Flagstaff hospital to rezone the land at Purple Sage Trail for several years, and spoke in favor of the rezoning case several times this past spring before the city’s Planning & Zoning Commission and during public comment at three City Council meetings. This rezoning case passed Mayor and Council on votes of 6-1 and 6-0 in June 2023.

For more than 50 years, Flagstaff Medical Center has served our community well, and now it is time to improve the quality of care well into the future for these reasons and more.

• The hospital has outgrown the current FMC campus. NAH cannot expand or retrofit to accommodate the future health care technologies and innovations our community will need in the coming years and

decades.

• The hospital’s proposal for a new facility will be a significant investment in the next generation of health care, which will ensure Flagstaff has the highest-quality, state-of-the-art health care close to home.

• The future hospital and ambulatory care center will be a benefit to:

– Patients seeking integrated, holistic health care options – from preventative, primary care needs to highly specialized, tertiary care.

– Physicians and nurses who want to work in a space that allows them to provide the best care available to their patients and community.

• The plan put forward by NAH will lead to:

- Continuous advances in health care technologies to Flagstaff

- Better care for all northern Arizona residents including neighboring tribal nations

- Potential affordable housing options on the existing NAH campus

Flagstaff and northern Arizona residents deserve to have access to the highest-quality health care, a YES Vote allows the new hospital to be built.

ADVOCACY

Q: How did you come to own Starlite Lanes?

Ron: I often joke that I was planted there by the federal witness protection program because of how unlikely it is that I would own and operate a bowling alley. Before buying it, I had no idea where Flagstaff even was, and I had not bowled in over 40 years. Simply put, I lost my Wall Street job and bought a bowling alley to feed my family.

Q: How long has Starlite Lanes been operating?

Ron: This year we are celebrating our 65th anniversary serving the community. Owning it for just thirteen of those years, my wife Karen and I are its fourth owners. Ironically, as old as the bowling alley is, it’s the most modern in Arizona, having replaced all our scoring, flooring, seating, monitors, and most importantly our pin setting machines, in just the last eighteen months.

Q: Where do you see the biggest growth potential for your practice?

Ron: As a single location business, we have exploited most of our top line growth opportunities, short of raising prices. For example, we added a kitchen soon after buying the business, and today, food is a meaningful part of our mix. Going forward, our best returns will come from introducing new technology and automation, like self-service kiosks.

Q: What has been your biggest workplace thrill or accomplishment?

Ron: No doubt, surviving Covid has been our greatest accomplishment to date. We bought a bowling alley because of its invulnerability to technologic change and its predictability as it relates to demand. We never thought we would ever be shut down, with no revenues coming in, but still responsible to pay the bills and

maintain the well-being of our employees.

Q: How do your services enrich the quality of life the community?

Ron: Immediately after buying Starlite Lanes, it was apparent that we had bought a community platform that happened to be a bowling alley. Within a month, we were hosting community-wide fundraisers, and by our first spring, several “Celebrations of Life.” Since then, our lives have been enriched with birthdays, retirements, engagements and numerous weddings.

Q: What’s worse to you than failure?

Ron: Not trying. Owning Starlite Lanes is not my first entrepreneurial venture. Between Wall Street jobs, a partner and I came close to signing Letters of Intent with all seven of the motion picture studios to roll out digital projection technology across every movie screen in America. It was a paradigm shift that actually took place, but without my partner and my participating. Timing is everything, and we were too early.

Q: From whom do you seek business advice?

Ron: Let me be clear upfront; I am

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

NACA - Native Americans for Community Action by

Native Americans for Community Action, Inc. (NACA) originated in the late 1960s, as a place for Native American individuals to eat, rest, visit, and receive various health services. In 1969, the newly established “Indian Center Organization” (now known as NACA), began fundraising and building support in the community.

When NACA first opened in 1971, its purpose was to be a “resting place”, a hospitality center, which hoped to offer a variety of social and health related programs. Soon thereafter, the center received its first funding from Indian Health Services (IHS) to provide health related materials. In 1974, NACA sponsored the Miss Indian Flagstaff pageant, a basketball tournament, a community dinner, and began several community programs: Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) Program, The Youth Education Program, The Adult Education Program, Substance Abuse Prevention Program, Social Services Program, Grandparent Elders Program, and The Hozho Youth Program.

In 1986, NACA expanded their space to incorporate more services, programs, and community resources. In 1991, NACA was designated as the 1st federal Urban Indian Health Center in Northern Arizona. In just 8 months, NACA received over 3,500 visits. By 2012, the NACA team was staffed by over 50 individuals, with over 70% representing Indigenous cultures. Programs at NACA now also included: Economic Development – Oak Creek Overlook Artisan Program, Health Promotions and Wellness Center Programs, Diabetes Intervention, Emergency Social Services, and Behavioral Health Services.

In 2014, NACA was awarded with a Tribal Youth Suicide Prevention Grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). NACA was also recognized with an “Arizona Outstanding Out-ofSchool Time” award by the Arizona Center for After School Excellence. In 2021, NACA celebrated 50 years of service in the Flagstaff and Coconino County communities, providing programs and services

that assist clients to increase their self-worth, empowerment, dignity, and self-sufficiency. These services center around identifying clients’ individual strengths, promoting selfpride, awareness, and respect, helping the client establish realistic goal setting and to strengthen personal autonomy, and providing tangible assistance that does not create dependence.

The mission of Native Americans for Community Action Inc. is to provide preventive wellness strategies and empower and advocate for Native peoples and others in need, in order to create a healthy community based on Harmony, Respect, and Indigenous Values.

NACA provides services such as capacity building in Native American communities by assisting future political and community leaders, fighting stereotypes of Native American individuals and organizations, and advocating as a knowledge base on Indigenous issues to governments and other nonNative organizations. NACA’s core program is the Family Health Center, which provides health and medical services to Native Americans and non-Native Americans. NACA also has a Pathways - Afterschool For Youth Program, Social Support Services, and an on-site Phoenix Indian Center Workforce Specialist. NACA accepts and provides services to all ethnic. groups of all ages, focusing on holistic and family care, and prioritizes the overall wellbeing of patients by honoring their customs, culture, and beliefs.

NACA’s Family Health Center currently offers the seasonal flu vaccine, the COVID-19 Moderna and Pfizer primary vaccines, and the COVID-19 bivalent booster. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call (928) 773-1245.
