OPINION POLL

Going on a Date? May is the month of love, so we asked our readers these two questions: What was your best date ever? What would be your ideal date?

Thomas, 16

I can't say which date was the best, because all my dates were great. My ideal date would be a moonlit1 dinner on a yacht, with the waves splashing round the boat and mermaids2 singing. But maybe this would be better for an anniversary3, not a regular date.

Marianna, 15

My best date ever was probably my first one. It was raining, it was very romantic and I got my first kiss. The ideal date for me and my boyfriend would be going to an ice cream shop and having some good ice cream. Then we could play paintball or go to a laser game centre to have some fun. And I'd totally beat9 him!

Discuss

How would you ask a boy or girl out?**?

Chris, 17

My best date ever was when my boyfriend tried to teach me to drive a car. Actually I was quite good at it, but then I crashed into a pile4 of snow. My ideal date? Skydiving with four African-Americans. And after the jump they should take me for ice-cream.

Martin, 16

Most of my dates were absolute failures10. I never know what to talk about. Recently it's been better, though. I feel I've grown up a bit. In my opinion the ideal date is a trip to Disney World, where everybody has a great time because there are loads* of things to do.

Viky, 17

The ideal date is very simple. When you're with a nice, smart girl any date is ideal. But it's good to plan ahead5. I would take her to an aqua park. There I could show off my muscles6 and shaped7 body and impress8 her. After that I would take her to a nice Italian restaurant for dinner because we'd be hungry after swimming.

H E A LTH

DIFFICULTY

Daddy-to-Be KEEP YOUR SPERM ALIVE When couples try to start a family, they sometimes find out that they can't become parents. Why? A low sperm count is often the cause. The statistics say that male* infertility** is a big issue, and it can start at a young age. The good news is that there are many ways to prevent this problem. Forty years ago, infertility was a very rare problem. That's not true anymore. More and more couples can't have a baby. Statistics show that over 40% of these couples have problems with the man's sperm.

Male infertility

Environmental causes Exposure to toxins or chemicals can reduce sperm production and function. Be careful and wear protective clothes when working with pesticides, herbicides, toluene and other paint thinners4. Heavy metals like mercury5 or lead6 are very bad for sperm, too.

LANGUAGE NOTE * male – men X female – women ** infertility – childlessness X fertility – ability to have children *** underweight – too thin **** shellfish – crab, lobster, prawns, shrimp, …

Male infertility can only be diagnosed by special laboratory tests. Usually the causes of infertility are low sperm production or low-quality sperm.

Medical causes Did you know that some infections can cause male infertility? Other medical causes are hormonal imbalances, weight problems (being either underweight*** or obese), or gluten1 intolerance. Certain treatments2 and medications, such as cancer3 treatments or anabolic steroids, can be very bad for sperm as well.

Health, lifestyle and other causes

Foods for fertility

Did you know that heat is a sperm killer? If you want to become a father, be careful. Overheating may temporarily reduce sperm quantity. A hot sauna or bath, sitting for hours, or working with a laptop on your lap7 can overheat the testicles8. Wearing tight9 underpants is also bad for fertility, and so is long-distance cycling!

How to reduce the risks of male infertility 1. D on't use tobacco, marijuana, anabolic steroids, or other drugs. 2. Minimize the amount of alcohol you drink. 3. L imit exposure to harmful chemicals and heavy metals. 4. Keep an appropriate body temperature. 5. Wear loose10-fitting underpants and shorts. 6. Use a softer saddle for cycling and do other sports as well. 7. Eat a healthy diet.

Foods to avoid

1. oysters rich in zinc, copper, iodine

2. pumpkin seeds rich in zinc, iron

3. fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins and antioxidants

4. dairy products rich in calcium, protein

5. salmon rich in Omega-3 fats

6. tomatoes rich in lycopene

The most important food to avoid is junk food. Fatty, fried and sugary foods are never a good choice. Next is high-mercury fish. The highest content of mercury is found in swordfish11, mackerel, tuna and shark.

Foods to eat Certain foods can help increase fertility. Try to eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, proteins and dairy products. Seafood, such as shellfish**** and salmon, is perfect for fertility. Contrary to many myths, there is no scientific evidence about how caffeine affects male fertility. If you follow the famous rule of "everything in moderation" when drinking coffee or alcohol, you should be fine.

Help your body, and your (future) babies Most men don't worry about fertility until they are ready to start a family. By that time, it might be too late. Luckily, things that are good for fertility are also good for living a healthy life. If you start right now, your future family will thank you.

Task Match 1. seafood 2. fruits and vegetables 3. tomatoes 4. dairy products

a) lycopene b) Omega-3 fats c) calcium, protein d) vitamins Solutions on page 2.

Web task

Lycopene This is found in red fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, pink grapefruits, watermelons and papayas. It has many health benefits: it's a powerful antioxidant, it prevents DNA damage, and it helps cells function better.

Sperm in numbers

• It takes one sperm and one egg to create a baby. • A human sperm cell measures about 0.05 millimetres (50 micrometres). • A human egg is about 30 times bigger than a sperm. • Sperm cells swim at about 5 mm a second. • The sperm cell was discovered by Antonie van Leeuwenhoek in 1677. This amateur Dutch scientist was called the “father of microbiology”. (Yes, he was a man.)
