OPINION POLL
Um, Eve, that's not a salad. That's my dirty laundry …
Are you a vegetarian? October is “Vegetarian Month”. We asked our young readers whether they are vege tarians or not and what they think about vegetarianism. Thomas, 16
No, I'm not a "veggie". I would die without meat. I love the taste1 of death. I think many people be come vegetarians just to be "in". It's trendy. Most vegetarians I know are pale2 and they look like vampires. Apparently a vegetarian diet isn't good for the body.
Julia, 15
I'm a vegetarian. All my family is. I tried to eat meat for the first time in my life at kindergarten when I was three years old. It was a shock for my body. I was so sick! My body couldn't digest6 animal proteins. Now I only eat vegeta rian meals and I love it.
Chris, 16
Martin, 16
I'm not a vege tarian: I like meat. My favou rite meal is steak with French fries. But I don't eat meat every day. It's healthy to eat vege tarian meals and salads, too. The best way is to eat a little bit of everything. However, I under stand those people who are vegetarians for health reasons3.
I'm a meat-eater. I have eaten meat since I was a little kid. I am very picky4 though; I prefer poultry5. In my opinion, eating lots of fruit and vegetables is healthy. But our body also needs a lot of protein, and it's mainly found in meat and only a little in vegetables.
Johnny, 17
I'm not a vegeta rian. My body needs meat to get proper nutri ents7. I'm a teen ager and I do sports, so I need energy and protein from meat. Some people become vegetarians to protest against the killing of animals for food. But does this change anything? I don't think so.

DIFFICULTY
The history of vegetarians A simple definition of a vegetarian is a person who doesn't eat meat. However, vegetarianism is more often a lifestyle choice and a philosophy than just a diet based on fruit and vegetables. One of the first popular vegetarians was the Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras (about 570–470 B.C.). He was against killing any “living creature”. People who liked his ideas and didn't eat meat were called Pythagoreans. According to the British Vegetarian Society, the word “vegetarian” comes from the Latin word “vegetus” which means “full of energy”.
Why are people vegetarians?
You Are What You Eat! VEGETARIANISM: FOR OR AGAINST? World Vegetarian Day, October 1st, is the beginning of Vege tarian Awareness Month. The benefits of vegetarianism are discussed on TV, radio, the Inter net and other media. Before you start thinking about converting to vegetarianism, it's a good idea to learn some facts. GEORGE RAYMOND (UK) 4 | Health
People become vegetarians for many reasons. Some want to reduce pollution1 because meat production needs more land, water, and energy than vegetable production. Some people believe being vegetarian leads to longer, healthier lives. Some are vegetarians for spiritual or religious2 reasons3 and some just want to be “in”. Others don't want to eat animals for ethical reasons; they refuse to eat slaughtered4 animals.
Health benefits of being a vegetarian A meat-free* diet may improve your health. Vegetarians usually weigh less and live longer than meateaters. According to the American Diet Association (ADA), a vegetarian diet reduces the risks of: • heart disease5 • cancer • diabetes • obesity • high blood pressure (hypertension) This is because a healthy vegetarian diet is low in fat and high in fibre. It consists6 mainly of colourful vegeta-
bles, fruits, nuts, peas, beans and lentils.

The risks of poor nutrition Vegetarians often hear from family and friends that a meat-free diet is risky. How risky can food be? Well, sometimes pretty risky. There are vegetarians who never plan their meals; their diet is simple, unbalanced, almost the same every day. As a result, they lack7 proper nutrients, particularly protein, calcium, vitamin D, iron, zinc and vitamin B12. Vegetarians can become tired and ill. The key to a healthy vegetarian diet is to consume a wide variety of foods and enough calories. To avoid8 serious vitamin or mineral deficiency9, vegetarians should plan their meals very carefully.

A diet good for everybody? Although we can find a lot of vitamins and minerals in plant-based food, some doctors say it's not enough for our bodies to function perfectly. For this reason, a purely vegetarian diet is not recommended for pregnant women, nursing mothers and young children. They are advised to have only vegetarian days (or weeks).

Michael G. Tyson
Easy as beans These days it's very easy to be a vegetarian. We can get all kinds of fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, etc. in shops, markets and supermarkets. The Internet provides inspiration for the kitchen; bookshops serve plenty of vegetarian cookbooks, and there are numerous vegetarian restaurants or restaurants that offer delicious vegetarian meals. Even fast food restaurants include healthy salads and vegetarian sandwiches on their menus. There are many pros and cons**, but nothing is black and white. In the beginning, try going without meat for one or two days a week and you'll see how you do. You'll also train your self-discipline, which is always good when it comes to eating.
WHO EATS WHAT? Semi-vegetarians eat fruit, vegetables, dairy products, eggs and some kinds of meat (poultry, fish). Lacto-ovo-vegetarians eat fruit, vegetables, dairy products and eggs. Vegans eat only fruit and vegetables, but no animal products. Vitarians are vegans who only eat raw food (not cooked or baked). Fruitarians eat only fruit, nuts and seeds.

ESL is a Swiss-based* company specializing in language study abroad** trips. It was founded in 1996. Today, with headquarters1 in Switzerland, ESL operates over 35 branches2 around Europe and has offices in Panama and Columbia. Our office in Prague was established*** in 2007 and since then we have sent hundreds of students abroad to learn more than ten different languages. English is
the most popular language, but Czechs are becoming interested in studying Spanish, Japanese and Chinese. ESL provides3 a wide selection of courses: tradi tional courses for juniors and adults, courses focused4 on business and legal5 communication and courses for certain age groups (30+ or 50+). With an ESL course, you get more than language lessons. For example, “English + cooking” in Brighton, “French + surfing” in Biarritz in the south of France, or you can do yoga on the beach before language lessons in Goa, India.”
