OPINION POLL
Sorry, the holidays are over! But there's good news as well! We asked our readers to tell us the good things about going back to school. / ALASTAIR S. EDWARDS (UK) Pedro, 16
Santos, Brazil Sorry, but there's nothing positive about being back at school. No, nothing. Well,… okay, the good thing is that I can see my friends more. I was in touch with them* on Facebook over the holidays, so I didn't miss them much, anyway.
Lauren, 15
San Diego, USA Shopping! When school starts again, we spend a lot of time and money on shopping. I have to buy new books and pencils, and new shoes and clothes, too! This year, I need to get new jeggings (very slim jeans, like leggings).
Martina, 14 Bern, Switzerland
I fancy** a boy from the other class. He's a friend on Facebook, but he doesn’t know I fancy him. I'm happy I'm back at school – I can see him again. I always smile at him and he smiles back. I missed him so much over the holidays!
Huan, 19
Nanjing, China I study at a University, so I start school in October. I can't wait to be back! I want to learn as much as possible – because in China you need to study really hard to get a good job. And during the holidays, I have to help my parents in their shop. When I'm at school, I don't have to.
Speedy, 16
Jacksonville, USA What's good about going back to school? The only thing I can think of is that back to school also means back to new TV seasons. The sixth season of The Mentalist, for example.
LANGUAGE NOTE to go back TO school to be back AT school * to be in touch with somebody – to communicate with somebody ** to fancy somebody – to like somebody

Is Your Body Acidic or Alkaline? BALANCE YOURSELF Do you need a cup of coffee in the morning to get yourself out of bed? Are you often tired? Maybe your body is too acidic1! / ALASTAIR S. EDWARDS (UK) Today it's very popular to speak about acidosis of the human organism. Many studies show that pH balance2 is important for our health. Diet books and health websites recommend3 alkaline4 diets. Alternative or holistic medicine suggests this as a new way to optimal health. However, ordinary doctors are sceptical.
a blood sample. Some people buy Litmus paper tests in a pharmacy and then measure the acidity of their saliva8 or urine9 at home. If they find it too acidic, they should look for treatment.
Acid-base balance Did you know that your body is constantly balancing acids and alkalis? The human body is very sensitive to pH levels and it needs the right balance to function properly5. This is called the acid-base balance. Our kidneys6 and lungs7 work hard to keep the balance right. Litmus paper

Acid and alkali levels are measured on the pH scale. Seven is about neutral, and is often green on the scale. Any changes from this neutral level can mean risks to your health. One of the problems most talked about is when the body becomes too acidic. This is called acidosis. In hospitals, acidity is tested from 4 | Health
Many alternative medicine doctors believe that acidosis of the body can cause health problems such as rheumatism, arthritis, kidney stones, infections, hair loss10 and obesity. What can make us too acidic? In most cases it's because of too many sweet fizzy drinks, too much fast food, fried meals, smoking, infections, negative emotions, stress and overeating. All this, combined with a lack of physical exercise, drinking too little water and a poor diet make the risks bigger.
What should we do? To make sure we have a good acid-base balance, we should drink plenty of fresh water, avoid stress, sleep well, quit smoking and alcohol, and do sports or exercise. The food we eat is very important, too. We usually eat what we like without giving it a second thought. Did you know that some food produces acids in the body and some alkalis? But the taste of the food does not tell you. For example, oranges and lemons taste sour (acidic), but in fact they are strongly alkaline. A well-balanced diet should consist of about 20% acidproducing food and 80% alkali-producing food.

Miracles
Well, miracles do happen, you know. Eating a strictly alkaline diet might improve your life: you can regain hair, get more energy and better immunity. You might also get rid of11 some serious illnesses. However, healthy eating doesn’t mean strict diets. For better health you don't need to be a complete vegetarian, just eat more fruit and vegetables each day, exercise and think positively.
WHAT DOES OUR DOCTOR SAY? Marta Procházková, MD I believe that acidosis of the organism happens only in extreme cases. The human body is an amazing system that knows perfectly well how to balance pH. In my opinion, it's more about business; there are many food supplements and products which promise to de-acidify your body, but it's just taking money out of people's pockets. But I fully agree with a healthy diet and lifestyle; this is good advice for everybody.

MONEY

Can I Pay by Credit Card? MORE AND MORE YOUNG PEOPLE IN DEBT1 Deeper in debt
in full during this period, you're ok. But if you don't, the bank will charge4 you interest on the debt.
No money in your account 2? No problem, if you're in the credit card club. But be careful about your debts. ALASTAIR S. EDWARDS (UK) If you have a credit card, you can pay even when there is no money in your account. Your bank lends you money interest3-free for a certain period of time. How long depends on the bank, but it's usually a month or two. If you repay* your debt
Example You had a €200 transaction on July 23, 2013. Your bank gives you a one-month interest-free period, so your debt is due5 for repayment *on August 23. You repay €199 on August 23, and only €1.00 of the total is still not paid. But the bank charges you interest on the €200 you borrowed on July 23 until you pay the last €1.00! Usually, interest rates are around 2% per month, which is 24% per year. Not a cheap loan6…
Most young people don't care about interest very much. They spend money on phones and in pubs, and go shopping for fashionable clothes, holidays, ultrabooks, etc. They pay by credit card and they get deeper and deeper into debt. A study from January 2013 in Virginia, USA, says that if this trend continues, people aged 20–30 today won't be able to repay their debts before they die! The USA has been facing7 the problem of more credit card holders and more unpaid debts on these credit cards for several years. The problem is now coming to Europe, including Central and Eastern Europe. Next time you want to borrow money with a credit card, think twice!
LANGUAGE NOTE * t o repay – to pay back repayment – paying borrowed money back
