For a lot of people, summer is the most beautiful season, a time to relax and travel.

We asked our colleagues what they are planning this summer.

Scotland, UK, now in the Czech Republic I'm going to spend the sum­ mer painting the roof of my house and chopping 1 wood for winter. But I'd like to have a week away somewhere, too.

My parents are coming for two weeks in July, so I'll be busy looking after2 them. My three children will be at summer camp for a while, so then it'll be nice and quiet at home!

This summer I'm going home to England. I've got work to do for a university course next year.

I'm also going to look after my mum's dogs and cats when she's on holiday in Africa. My summer wish is for more sunshine than last year – England was very grey and rainy last summer!

The Power of the Sun PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE These days, we keep hearing about how dangerous the sun is for our skin. Many people are so scared they totally avoid1 the sun… and forget the good things it gives us. / RYAN KELLEY (USA)

Over the past few decades, we have learned from the media that exposure to the sun is bad for our health.

It’s easy to believe that when we hear it over and over again from television, magazines, and the radio. But there’s another side to the story: the sun can be incredibly healing,2 and we should keep both sides in mind.

The good side: energy, life, and vitality For thousands of years, humans have respected the magnificent power of the sun. We all know that 4 | Health

sunshine gives plants energy and helps them grow; the same is true for humans. Sunshine increases3 our energy, mood, libido, and immune system. It clears our skin; acne, rashes and eczema can all be cured by sunshine. Sunbathing4 can also help your liver; blood circulation is increased and more hormones are produced. This can help people with insomnia,5 depression, PMS and many other hormonerelated troubles. And we shouldn’t forget the most well-known bene­ fit of sunshine: vitamin D. This vitamin helps regulate the immune

system and increases calcium absorption. It’s very important for our bones.

The bad side: danger to your skin The sun’s gifts are certainly great.

But on the other hand, there are risks. Exposing the skin to sunrays can lead to skin damage, such as spots and wrinkles,6 and even worse – to skin cancer. This disease7 can happen to anyone. People often make the mistake that they believe they are not in danger because

their skin gets suntanned8 easily. Anybody can get this disease, not only people with pale* skin. Prevention is about reasonable sunbathing and using as much sun protection as possible. The best way is to combine sunscreen and protective clothing like sunglasses, hats, and long sleeves.9 Did you know that there is even SPF clothing? You can buy shirts, skirts, leggings and even special face shields with SPF 50+.

Everything in Moderation Our best advice is: “Enjoy the sun, but protect your skin!”

T RUE STO RY Fiona, 39 Manchester, UK I have red hair, white skin and freckles. I always hated sunbathing, but my family and friends laughed at me and called me a ghost. I felt ugly being so pale,* so I made myself spend more time in the sun. I got sunburned many times as a child. Then I realized it was wrong and stopped sunbathing. But the skin has a great memory! When I was 25, one of my freckles started to itch and grow. I went to a dermatologist and she cut it off. Then she called me to say it was a melanoma and I had to undergo a bigger operation. I went to the doctor early enough and didn’t need any other treatment. I was lucky.

In 1999 Thomas Maselis, a Belgian doctor, had the idea of Euromelanoma. This is a project to make people aware of skin cancer, and to offer free screening. Each year on May 13, people can visit dermatologists, go to conferences, or use online medical forums.

Melanoma in numbers Melanoma is a type of skin tumor.10 It’s usually brown or black. Melanoma happens to 6–7 out of every 100,000 people. It’s the most dangerous type of skin cancer, if not found early. It‘s very aggressive and it causes 75% of deaths related to skin cancer.

May the Wind Fill Your Sails!

YACHTING IN NUMBERS If you want to spend your holiday as a real sailor, don’t wait until you are a millionaire!

Buying a luxury yacht1 costs a lot of money. Such a yacht is a floating machine that needs a lot of fuel,2 docking fees3 and maintenance.* Then there is the crew,4 who must be paid to sail the yacht, keep it clean, and feed everyone on board. Operating and maintaining* a yacht is at least 10 % of what a yacht costs. So the owner of a $10 million yacht should expect to pay $1 million every year to keep it running.

If you can’t afford to buy and keep even the cheapest yacht, don’t worry. You can enjoy sailing at a reasonable5 cost if you hire6

a smaller yacht. In Croatia or Greece, a sailing yacht with 3 or 4 cabins and 8–10 berths (beds) costs about €200–400 per person per week. You’ll also spend something on fuel, depending on7 how much you use the wind or the engine. It’s a cheap floating hotel, isn’t it?

If you don’t know a good captain to sail the yacht, boat rental agencies will recommend someone. Some captains love sailing more than money.

These “sea dogs” won’t ask much, and they might sail the boat just for their travel expenses8 and food.

A good, experienced captain of a luxury yacht makes about USD 1,000 per foot of yacht per year. For example, the captain of a 150-foot (45.7 m) yacht can earn USD 150,000 per year, i.e. around CZK 240,000 per month.
