OPINION POLL

Do you like Gangnam Style? On pages 12–13, we report on the most liked, most watched and most discussed song and dance ever – Gangnam style. Are you, too, one of the millions of people who watched the clip on YouTube and gave it a “like“?

We asked our readers whether1 they liked the singer, the song, and the Gangnam Style dance.

Jakub, 19 I know of PSY only as the author of Gangnam Style, so I can’t really say whether I like him or not. I’m not keen on this kind of music, but I must say the combination of English and Korean is interesting. The idea of imitating riding a horse is unique,2 so I like the dance.

Adéla, 15 I like PSY because he is very funny and crazy, but I don’t know any of his other songs except4 Gangnam Style. I also love that dance. Whenever I hear this song, I dance to it. It’s so much fun! I can’t wait for the next video by PSY.

Tereza, 15

Kryštof, 15

I like PSY, because he is special, unique and original. The Gangnam Style song is nice, I liked it, but now it’s overplayed. I know that many people keep playing the clip, laughing and dancing all the time. But I don’t.

I have no idea if I like PSY or not because I only know one of his songs. When I saw the Gangnam Style clip, I laughed and thought it was a joke. It’s funny, but I don’t like it. The dance (can we call it a dance?) is weird,3 interesting, unique, but I don’t like it.

Míra, 15 I don’t like PSY because I don’t like his music style. But the Gangnam Style song is an exception. 5 I like the song and the dance too. The dance is unique and special, something absolutely new. I dance it every day – I don’t know why.

Gangnam Style is the most popular K-pop song and dance by Korean singer PSY K-pop means Korean pop. It‘s mostly a mix of pop, electro pop, hip hop, rock and R&B. It comes from South Korea and it‘s now becoming very popular. It is not only music; it‘s a subculture among teenagers and young adults in many countries around the world. The dance imitates riding a horse.

Let’s hope he keeps riding that invisible horse and saves us the work.

MY VISIT TO A NUTRITIONIST1

Have you tried everything to lose weight? But with no results? And have you been to a nutritionist? I have, and this is my experience. / PAVLA ŠTANCLOVÁ, ALASTAIR S. EDWARDS (UK)

I put on three kilos last spring and since then I’ve been trying to lose them. I stopped eating chocolate and nuts in the evening. Nothing changed. I started walking five kilometres three times a week. No difference. So I walked up the stairs and stopped taking the lift (we live on the ninth floor.) Nothing. “It must be something in my diet,” I thought, and arranged a meeting with Tomáš Brych, a nutritionist from Turnov. He asked me about my health, age, height, the sports I do and my diet. So I described my lifestyle – what I do, what I eat and how I feel. I also told him that my thyroid2 works too slowly.

4 | Health

“Start with minerals and vitamins,” he said. If the body doesn’t get the right minerals, nothing works properly. Then he told me that my thyroid problems might be connected with a gluten intolerance,3 so I should stop eating foods containing4 gluten. I also learnt that I don’t eat enough proteins. “You should eat proteins with each meal, including mornings and evenings,” advised Mr. Brych. Why? When we sleep, our body “repairs” everything and needs these proteins to do it. If the body doesn’t get proteins from food, it takes them from muscles.5 Adults also need animal proteins to help the body produce growth hormones.6 These are important for weight control, muscle building, bones and mental health.

The diagnostic scale is connected to a computer.

Then I took off my socks and got on to a special diagnostic scale. The scale was connected to a computer which analysed the weight of the muscles, bones, fat and water in my body. Here are the results: Web task

*R esting metabolic rate (RMR) is the energy we need to stay alive with no activity. More muscles, cold weather, small regular meals and pregnancy7 increase8 our RMR. On the other hand, big fat meals and higher age decrease9 our RMR. 1 calorie = 4.184 joules.

The table shows that my fat levels and muscles are normal and healthy. But I could still have less fat. Yes, the three kilos… My biological age (calculated from the proportion of fat, muscles, bones and water) is 26! Yippee! I will have a long and healthy life! Most people go to a nutritionist because they want to lose weight, but some also need to gain10 muscles, some want to look and feel younger, and some are tired and need more energy and vitality. Mr. Brych, what are the most common mistakes your clients make? • They say they do have breakfast. But if it’s at work, two hours after they wake up, it’s not breakfast, it’s a snack. • They say they drink a lot, but what? Coffee, tea, cola, and no water. • They don’t wash their hands after peeling11 an orange. And then they eat with dirty hands (chemicals). • People care too much about weight. I have had clients, 50-kilo women, who looked skinny, but were actually obese. They had far too much fat and no muscles. Mr. Brych also recommended what to do to be fit: – Do sports at least 3 times a week. – Eat every 3–4 hours. If you are hungry in two hours, it means you haven’t had a good meal (not enough fat or proteins). – Eat in the evenings, too; especially proteins. – Avoid gluten, sugar and fizzy drinks. – Drink a lot of water. – Don’t forget minerals; for example, drink mineral water.

Nature gave us meat for proteins, vegetables for vitamins, fruit for sugar, and nuts for fat. Mr. Brych (39) has been a specialist nutritionist and a spinning and yoga instructor for over 10 years. He co-operates with a group of doctors including: Tomáš Soukup (stem cell research), Iva Navrátilová (radiology), Pavla Řehořková (endocrinology) and Pavel Navrátil (transplantology).

NANOFIBRES AROUND US

Ski poles made of nanofibres

Nanoparticles1 and nanofibres2 have moved out of laboratories and into our daily lives. Have you noticed? / ALASTAIR S. EDWARDS (UK) The first nanofibres (made of carbon) were invented3 in 1889. Since then, scientists have produced nanofibres and the machines to make them. But both the machines and the nanofibres they produced were very expensive.

And greater growth* is expected in the future (see table below). Year

Global revenues4 for nanofiber products

2011

382.1 million USD

2017

is means we can look forward Th to more (and hopefully cheaper) products using nanofibres, e.g.: The Nanospider – a machine that produces nanofibres TM

However, in 2004 things began to change in the nanofibre industry with invention of the NanospiderTM. The NanospiderTM is a machine which makes nanofibres. It was designed and built by a team of Czech scientists from Liberec Technical University and Elmarco, a company also based in Liberec. Thanks to their NanospiderTM, manufacture became more effective and cheaper. Since then the nanofibre industry has grown* rapidly. Elmarco sells Nanospiders all over the world, mainly in Japan and the U.S.A. 6 | Economy

• Tennis rackets, ski poles, bicycle frames and other sports equipment that uses carbon nanofibres is ultra-light and rigid.6 • Outdoor clothing made of polymer nanofibres is very light, breathable7 and waterproof. • Socks and underwear with nanoparticles of silver kill bacteria and prevent bad smells. • Microchips with very conductive8 carbon nanofibres. • Hydrophobic surfaces made of nanofibres are resistant to all waterbased liquids. This is useful when protecting houses from sprayers. • The most important field where nanofibres are used is medicine;

for example, nanofibre filters, antibacterial plasters, human tissue replacements9 and nanorobots. Let’s hope we don’t change from macrobiotics** to nanobiotics! Discuss

Have you got anything made of nanofibres?
