Skipping breakfast has become a big problem in the USA. On pages 4–5, you can read about how Americans are trying to make people have a proper breakfast. They have introduced September as “Better Breakfast Month”. What do you think? Do the Czechs need a Better Breakfast Month, too?
Drive magazine asked five Czech students about their breakfasting habits:
Adam, 16 years Hunger wakes me up every morning, so I have a big breakfast every day. Most often, I have dark bread with cheese and ham, fruit, and I drink some juice.
Katka, 15 years I never forget to have breakfast. On weekdays, I usually eat a roll with jam or cereal with milk, and I always drink tea. But at weekends, when I have more time, I have toast with cheese and I drink orange juice.
Martin, 19 years I have breakfast every day. I usually have cereal with milk or something sweet, for example a cake or a donut. With the cake, I drink black tea or hot chocolate.
Karolina, 17 years No matter how much in a hurry I am, I always have breakfast. I usually have cereal with milk or yoghurt and from time to time, I have bread and ham or cheese. Most often, I drink tea.
Damn, I look like a pig!
Barbora, 16 years I have breakfast regularly, every day, and as I like sweet breakfasts, I usually have hot chocolate and white bread with jam.

Start the Day Right September – Be t ter Bre akfast Month Do you think breakfast is not important and you can just skip1 it? Your body and your mum don’t think so. Neither do food and nutrition2 experts. They all want people to be more serious about breakfast. What do they say? / James Plummer (UK) September is known as Better Breakfast Month (BBM) in the USA, where obesity has become a big problem, because so many people are overweight3. Experts believe that teaching people to eat a healthy breakfast is the right way to control weight. BBM is like a food holiday. There are lots of recipes and ideas which people can share, and some people try to meet up with friends or family for breakfast. In some schools and colleges, they have lessons to teach
the students how important it is to eat a healthy breakfast. There are TV programmes and adverts as well, to help teach people about nutrition. So why is breakfast such an important issue?
Your Body is Sending Out an SOS After 8–12 hours without food, your body is calling for some fuel. Your muscles 4 and brain need energy in the morning. So give

Benefits Eating breakfast has many benefits. It is the secret to staying healthy, staying at a good weight, and stabilizing your blood sugar level6. In other words, breakfast will make you healthy, slim, balanced and smart. It is a good opportunity to start the day right. Web task

Skipping breakfast is not as common in Great Britain as it is in the USA. Although the traditional British breakfast, also called a “fry up”, has a deep history, these days no one has much time in the morning. So now the British prefer toast with jam, or cornflakes with milk. But if you want to enjoy a real traditional British breakfast, you will get it in a Bed and Breakfast, or a B&B. B&Bs are small hotels made in family houses, and they are cheaper and friendlier than hotels. They will serve you with a huge breakfast, and you will not have to do the washing up!

Go Green, Go Local While I am writing this article, I am sitting in the Czech Republic, drinking a Scotch whisky, from a glass that was made in Russia by a Swedish company, and typing on a laptop made by a German company, which I bought in Australia and which has parts that were made all over the world. We are living in an increasingly globalised world; what are the effects? / Seb Noltorp (AUS)
Do you “go green”? If so, you: a) dye your hair green. b) go to the woods very often. c) a ct and think in an environmentally friendly way.
Globalisation Globalisation means that companies, ideas and lifestyles are spreading more and more easily around the world, thanks to modern met hods of travel and communication. Unfortunately, globalisation has some negative impacts1 on the environment, economy and culture. For example, the unemployment rate2 in developed countries is growing because companies tend to outsource3 production to reduce operation costs4. Many

big corporations and powerful nations protect mainly their own interests in a free market economy5. They just want to maximise their profits. This system generates a lot of money through trade agreements6 and transportation costs, but the money has no benefit for the consumer7 because most of the money leaves their country.
Wasteful system The current system of global trade is incredibly wasteful8. There are some developed countries that are importing products which they do not need, or which they can produce themselves. We have apples being grown in one country, processed9 in another country, packaged in a third country, and then sent back to the country
f ree market economy [friː ˈmɑːkɪt] – hospodářství volného trhu 6 t rade agreement [treɪd əˈgriːmənt] – obchodní dohoda 7 c onsumer [kənˈsjuːmə] – spotřebitel 8 w asteful [ˈweɪstfʊl] – nehospodárný 9 t o process [ˈprəʊses] – zpracovat 10 t o save [seɪv] – ušetřit 5
that the apples started in. All this movement costs a lot of money. It uses a lot of fuel. It creates a lot of waste and pollution.
Localization To protect our planet from pollution, we just need to stop wasting so much energy. One of the possible methods is “going local”. Focusing on local products saves10 fuel spent on transportation, supports local businessmen and farmers, makes us think more about what we actually need instead of what we just want, and eventually, perhaps, spend less money. All of this can make us happier. And isn’t that what we all really want? Discuss
What Czech companies do you know? Do you use their products? Why/Why not? Look at some things that you own, like your clothes or mobile phone. Where do they come from? What do you know about these countries? What food do you eat that is grown locally? Do you like it? What local products do you know? Do you use any local products?
