SOPHIE PARKER BLURRING BOTANICAL LINES Using bold strokes and plant leaves as her muse, Sophie Parker has become a master artist in the botanical world. As the creative director of Wife NYC, a botanical studio based in Brooklyn, New York, Parker draws on her background as a painter and visual artist to merge the handmade with the organic. Inspired by the shapes and colors of artistic greats such as Matisse, Parker aims to reimagine traditional plant and floral forms – offering a cuttingedge, modern way of thinking about what is “natural.”

Her work has been shown in numerous galleries and fashion houses throughout New York, enthralled big names such as Nike and Yves Saint Laurent, and even caught the eye of well-known scissor brand Fiskars, which incorporated Parker’s artwork on a pair of their crafting scissors, aptly named the Avant Garden design.

Wild Pecans I love how much natural variation there is in the shells of wild pecans.

I harvest these as they fall naturally from the tree (or the squirrels discard them) and gather them throughout late summer and autumn.

Acorns Page 24

Acorns There are so many different types of acorns out there and I like to mix them up when making garlands.

Acorns can be uncooperative with sitting still while drilling them. Be very careful and take your time so you don't injure yourself.

Autumn Aromatics:

Autumn Abundance Use the element of Fragrance to attract abundance into your home. One of my favorite ways do do this is to create a simmer pot in my kitchen. I'll show you how to create your very own with my Autumn Abundance recipe!

Metal Pot You need a heat safe pot or kettle that can take direct heat on your stovetop.

Water Filtered water is best but you can always use moon water or tap water. Bring Your Water to a simmer.

Cinnamon I like to use cinnamon sticks because I can break them into pieces. I have also used powdered cinnamon, cinnamon bark oil or cassia oil. Use what you have on hand and enjoy the most.

Ginger If you love ginger, use fresh ginger root or ginger root essential oil. The aromatics of ginger pack quite a punch. I prefer to use powdered ginger root so I can have better control of its potency in the simmer pot.

Black Pepper I prefer to use whole peppercorns for a more subtle fragrance to the simmer pot.

If you enjoy a more "spiced" scent add ground or cracked pepper instead.

Coffee

Coffee is believed to speed up manifestations.

Use whole beans if you have them so they don't overwhelm your simmer pot. If you have ground or instant coffee, just add a tiny bit. Adding too much will essentially brew coffee in your pot and it can easily scorch if left boiling for too long.

Orange Slices Fresh is best, but dried orange slices still add some amazing abundance energy to your simmer pot. You can easily recharge their potency with some sweet orange essential oil.

Cloves Cloves are used in many abundance blends and pair well with the fragrances of this aromatic bouquet. I like to use clove oil for a longer shelf life. I find I don't use whole cloves fast enough where as their scent loses its potency as they age.

Salt Salt is used for purification. I use either sea salt or pink salt. There is no shame in using simple table salt. What you have on hand will be just fine.

Star Anise If you don't like anything with a licorice type of scent just leave this out. Star Anise helps to blend all of the aromas together in to a bouquet of fragrance.

Oak Leaf Garlands

Oak Leaves This technique works well with both fresh oak leaves & preserved.

I collect oak leaves after a windy day. The wind helps knock down old branches & clusters of leaves. Let nature do the hard work for you.

Let your fresh leaves air dry for a few days in a dry place (I use my patio or garage) before working with them.

Crocheting Chains

Basic Chains I love to crochet chains out of leftover yarn from previous projects.

I keep them on hand in different lengths to use for armatures, wreaths, swags, body flowers, & gift wrapping.

Try making these while you're watching a movie or if you're a passenger in a car to keep your hands busy.

"Crow" Feathers

"Crow" Feathers These are actually simple black turkey feathers from an art supply store utilized in a different way than simply gluing.

This is a crochet method used to create a hanging feather for halloween decor.

Chestnuts

Chestnuts I will confess I purchased a bag of these at the grocery store about a year ago and completely forgot they were in my pantry. I found them and noticed they were about half the weight they were when I got them. (they dried out) I drilled them to make "beads" and worked them into garlands.
