Mercedes-Benz continues to support Olympic star Annalise Murphy

F

ollowing her exploits on the Volvo Ocean Race, Olympic silver medal-winning sailor Annalise Murphy has received additional support from Mercedes-Benz Ireland as she continues her preparations for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. Renewing her ‘Tier One’ partnership arrangement, the 29-year old Rathfarnham sailing star has been provided with a new Mercedes-Benz X-Class Pick-up to transport her team, herself and her equipment to events, here in Ireland and overseas.

“Having the Mercedes-Benz X-Class is a major boost to my training regime and my ambitions for Tokyo. I am really looking forward to giving my preparation the X-tra power that the stylish new X-Class delivers,” Annalise commented.

Changing van driving habits can cut fuel bills by as much as 12% *Ford EcoGuide helps drivers to save fuel

M

any drivers know that they can save on fuel by laying off the accelerator pedal. Now, Ford is introducing commercial vehicle-first technology that helps drivers economise further by letting them know when to slow down in good time to avoid hard braking, based on what lies ahead, and even out of sight. Ford’s EcoGuide technology uses the vehicle’s sat-nav to anticipate future driving situations that help inform the most fuel-efficient way to drive. It analyses driving behaviour and offers feedback via the instrument cluster to help achieve the optimum efficiency for the road conditions ahead.

“Everyone has experienced occasions when we have to brake suddenly if a bend is tighter than expected, only to speed up again afterwards. EcoGuide will help avoid this, saving drivers fuel, time and stress,” said Michael McDonagh, Transit Global Chief Programme Engineer, Ford of Europe, and a native of Tubbercurry, County Sligo.

Ford will introduce EcoGuide to new Transit, Transit Custom van and the Tourneo Custom people-mover from mid-2019.

The EcoGuide helps customers drive more smoothly by using information from Ford satellite navigation and giving them advance notice of road junctions, slopes and bends, or upcoming speed limits.

Based on this information, the system prompts the driver to decelerate, while the vehicle’s gear shift indicator advises the ideal

gear, using icons in the instrument cluster, to avoid unnecessary braking or acceleration.

In addition, EcoGuide can provide drivers with feedback on their driving efficiency via a “halo” around the digital speed read-out, based on analysis of acceleration, braking, cruising and gearshift patterns.

The halo expands as the driver adopts more efficient driving habits, and a report can be viewed at the end of each trip.

Mitsubishi Motors Dendo Drive House “Be Part of the Energy”

H

aving sparked much attention at the recent Geneva Motor Show, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) is about to introduce the next (real-life) building block of its electro-mobility strategy.

Following the vehicles (i-MiEV and Outlander PHEV for now but more models to follow), the infrastructure-related solutions (V2X connectivity compatibility, onboard 1,500W 230V sockets, direct powering of A/C & accessories, etc), and the dealership operations (EV-dedicated “Dendo Drive Stations” in Japan), MMC now connects car + house + grid via its soon-to-be retailed “Dendo Drive House” package or “DDH”.

Although smaller than many of its competitors, MMC started electromobility R&D back in 1966, making today’s developments a natural step in its own long

term evolution. It took two bold real-life steps along the way, firstly launching i-MiEV in 2009 – the first mass production EV from a mainstream manufacturer and secondly, launching the EV-based Outlander PHEV in 2013, pre-empting the Plug-in Hybrid SUV segment of which it has become the global market leader since launch. Its electro-mobility commitment is such that all its forthcoming product line-up will incorporate electrified powertrains with dedicated solutions for each segment and vehicle.

The Dendo Drive House is an eco-system solution for home and vehicle meant to generate, store, and share power, making the car part of the energy infrastructure.

Due to be retailed during 2019, first in Japan and Europe, DDH benefits from real-life EV usage and behaviour intelligence gathered around the world from 190,000 Outlander PHEV customers and also from several V2X and electric (EV) pilot projects – a unique asset in the industry.

Time to adjust seat position to prevent back pain

M

ore than two-thirds (70%) of van drivers have taken time off work due to back pain, according to a survey undertaken by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

Drivers who suffer from so called ‘Builder’s Back’ take an average of three weeks off work due to poor seat adjustment triggering the back issues, especially as many drivers spend up to seven hours a day in their vans.

During a day’s testing, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and a chiropractor discovered that while half of van drivers say that they adjust their seat to the correct position, two-thirds are still sitting incorrectly or missing crucial steps. Although most drivers adjusted their seats before driving, many committed common mistakes of positioning the seat too close to the steering wheel and angling the seat too far back.

Prab Chandhok, chiropractor commented on the findings: “Many people now point to driving as a trigger for their back or neck pain, so it’s really important that your van is set up properly for your needs, to help ease the strain that driving – especially for long periods of time – can have on your back and neck. The key thing to remember is that there is no single seat that is perfect for everyone, so it’s practical to test the seat out fully before you buy a new vehicle. The more adjustable it is the better.”

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, aware that many customers spend up to seven hours a day in their vans, aims to create a workplace that is as comfortable as possible. The Volkswagen Crafter offers both ‘ergoComfort’ and ‘ergoActive’ seats, allowing van drivers to individually adjust their seats for an optimal driving position.

optimal back care with up to 20-way adjustment. The suspension seat softens unpleasant bumps and jolts which can jar a driver’s back. The ‘ergoActive’ seats, equipped with next generation seat foam, offers 14-way adjustment, including a massage function, with back-friendly ergonomics that ensure the hours spent behind the wheel are as pleasant as possible.

SEVEN TIPS TO ADJUST YOUR SEAT • Height: Your thighs should be as parallel to the floor as your seat will allow, and where possible try to get your hips higher than your knees. You should also adjust the thigh support if you have one to ensure you have the maximum surface of your thighs touching the seat.

• Pedals: You should be able to push the pedals to the floor with a bend in your knees.

• 110°: Bring your seat all the way up so it’s straight and then take it back until you are comfortable whilst maintaining a 110 degree angle between your back and thighs.

• Lumbar Support: The lumbar support should be adjusted so you can feel it support the hollow in your back but so it’s not causing your spine to arch more than is normal for you.

• Head Restraint: The height and angle of your head restraint should be adjusted so you can feel the centre of the support touch the middle of the back of your head, although it does not need to be touching at all times.

• Steering Wheel: Once in correct seating position, bring your arm up in front of you and position the centre of the steering wheel to be in line with the fold of your wrist.

• Rear Mirror: Lift up your chest by five degrees and then adjust your mirrors to help stay in an upright position on long drives. www.fleet.ie

Return of Toyota Land Cruiser Business

T

oyota Ireland has announced that it has relaunched the Land Cruiser five seater Business model with limited fi rst arrivals in July.

It will be priced from €56,907 ex-VAT.

“The Toyota Land Cruiser is a legendary car in the Toyota line-up, known for its powerful performance and ability to tackle any terrain,” said Steve Tormey, Chief Executive of Toyota Ireland. “It’s been a fi rm favourite of our Irish customers and we’re delighted to reintroduce the Business model at a competitive price point. As the only five-seater model in the N1 segment it’s a fantastic offering for customers.”

Taxation changes in 2018 saw the demise of the five seater SUV commercial, but with this category of vehicle having proven very popular with business users, Toyota expects demand for the Business Land Cruiser to be high, particularly as it is now the only five-seater in the N1 segment.

Iveco’s Gold Standard Manufacturing Plant

I

veco’s commercial vehicles manufacturing facility in Valladolid, Spain has achieved Gold status in the World Class Manufacturing (WCM) programme. It is the second CNH Industrial site, after the Madrid plant, to achieve this prestigious accolade.

The recognition is a timely boost for Iveco, coinciding with the international launch of the new Daily van which will be manufactured at the plant. The Valladolid site also produces cabs for the brand’s Trakker and Stralis heavy trucks, with final assembly at the Madrid factory. In 2018, over 80% of production from Valladolid was destined for worldwide export.

World Class Manufacturing is one of the global manufacturing industry’s highest standards for the integrated management of manufacturing plants and processes. It is a pillar-structured system based on continuous improvement, designed to eliminate waste and loss from the production process by identifying objectives such as zero injuries, zero defects, zero breakdowns and zero waste.

To certify improvements, a system of periodic third-party audits evaluates all of the WCM pillars, forming an overall score for each plant that is the basis for three achievement levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold.

The WCM programme enables Iveco’s Valladolid factory to efficiently manage highly complex production processes which feature over 11,000 product configurations, some 350 colours and six different body types.

Iveco delivers to the heart of Business with new Link Solutions on new Daily

ooked at objectively, the forty-year heritage of the Iveco Daily could be said to have outshone the Iveco brand name itself. As the fi rst model to come out of the European truck brand amalgamations back in 1978 (to be joined later by Ford Trucks UK), its sales success has been well recorded. And for the introduction of the new model there is no doubt the design engineers considered putting the Daily lettering at the front end of the bonnet, like Land Rover does with the Discovery and now Mitsubishi with the Outlander. But not this time, we hear!

To the naked eye, the upgrades to the latest Iveco Daily both externally and inside are clearly visible. A significant facelift, but these modifications to the new model range are more than cosmetic as MY2019 Daily has undergone a major brain transplant – future proofi ng this light commercial family. While the heart (engine) and other vital organs such as the transmission, axles and wheels – indeed all the hardware items needed to propel the vehicle - remain intact prett y much as before, it’s the soft ware inside the electronic system that has been reborn. High levels of connectivity and driver aid technology are the main elements redeveloped by Iveco engineers and its associated partners.

Tailored services for all customers ranging from individual Daily owners to SMEs and large fleet operators are being catered for with this new package. Sustainability is well considered also with powertrain developments meeting Euro 6D/temp emission levels with more power and economy achieved. Th is grouping of new brain cells are all stored in a Connection Box, with its nerve endings transmitt ing throughout the electrical field of the vehicle.

Two major partnerships established with Microsoft and Verizon

Connect assist with the peak delivery of the multitude of connectivity programmes. Taking three years from concept to reality, the collaboration with Microsoft and Iveco on the Daily started in 2016 with the Daily Business Up App. Now further evolved, value added services, powered by Microsoft Azure Cloud platforms, offer greater operational efficiency, predictive maintenance and ongoing aftersales contact. At the CNH Industrial Village in Turin, call-centre staff at Iveco’s control room provide real time data to the individual or company owner. Th is allows Iveco’s specialist team to maximise the vehicle’s uptime by taking preventative actions, planning maintenance and service intervals in order to reduce or eliminate down time. Another innovative initiative is the Remote Assistance Service which

facilitates data set changes, diagnostic sessions and even soft ware uploads – all done remotely – or ‘Over the Air’ as described by new Daily team leader Raffaele Di Donfrancesco.

The New Daily’s connectivity also offers telematics solutions to help owners-drivers and fleet managers optimise their efficiency.

The MyDaily portal, also accessible through the MyDaily App, enables vehicle owners to monitor their Daily from their desktop computer or on the move from their mobile device. They can analyse its performance and fuel consumption, as well as the driver’s driving style. The Daily will also send regular Smart Reports on the vehicle’s key parameters with suggestions on how to improve the driving style to save fuel. Customers can also plan the Daily’s service interventions to push its efficiency to its maximum.

New Fleet Management systems on the Daily, co-created with Verizon Connect, incorporate more than just telematics and cater especially for the fleet owner. Among its various parts or elements are modules to reduce fleet running costs through better navigation, vehicle visibility and driver and engine performance, all through real time reporting. Route scheduling, driver hours monitoring and delivery sign-offs can also be interfaced through the Web and App portals.

The campaign behind this suite of offerings from Iveco is “Change your Business Perspective,” in that it offers a new wave of services to precisely match the customer’s use of their vehicle for their business. Th is approach means that the client is not just buying a commercial vehicle but one with future proofed tools that bring out the best in the driver in an efficient, production, positive and safe way.

As life on the road of a van becomes more pressurised Iveco understands and has introduced a whole host of Driver Assistance aids, many with built in safety systems such as Advanced Emergency Braking and City Brake which prevents collisions below speeds of 50 km/h, while City Brake PRO stops bumps as slow as 5 km/h. Allied to the Adaptive Cruise Control system is Queue Assist which works effectively in slow moving traffic, maintaining a set speed and safe distance from the vehicle ahead. Out on the open road ProActive Lane Keeping Assist and Crosswind Assist come into play.

estimates that up to 5 hours a month can be saved by courier drivers with this changeover from the manual hand-brake (but don’t tell the boss!). Additional stress reducing systems include City Mode which lightens the steering when driving in urban traffic, while Hill Descent Control and Traction Plus Control add grip when needed on slippery surfaces or downhill.

As before, the beating heart of the Daily stems from two diesel and one natural gas engine. Diesels come with 2.3 litre (116156hp) and 3.0 litre (160-210hp) capacities. Propulsion for the CNG engine is via the 3.0 litre (136 hp) block. With various tweaks to its arteries and veins, up to 10% fuel savings have been gained, which contributes to the lower cost of ownership with longer service intervals.

While out on a test-drive in the Daily 35 Natural Power we noticed that the grip and feel from the smaller, leather multifunctional steering wheel (with straight lower end) has improved, mainly thanks to a new Electronic Power steering system.

Back to the facelift and new Daily’s fresh look is portrayed by styling changes to the lights (LEDS now), bonnet, grille and bumper (which is now 3-piece unit for lower cost of maintenance).

Inside, the new instrument cluster pleases the eyes with its 7” multifunction colour touch screen, comparable to what we see nowadays in top end passenger cars. Its Hi-Connect infotainment system with voice recognition enables the driver to mirror their mobile device with Apple Car Play and Android Auto and use their Apps in full safety while driving. On the screen, DAB radio, rear camera display, and TomTom car and truck navigation system, and Iveco’s Driving Style Evaluation system provides real-time advice.

New Daily is built at Iveco’s plants in Suzzara, Italy and Valladolid, Spain, with the latter reaching Gold Manufacturing status recently, while the Suzzara facility is aiming to push on from its Silver certification.

The new Daily project has entailed more than 900,000 engineering hours, 800 virtual and physical tests, 200 prototypes, and more than 3.5 million of kilometres of durability and reliability testing.

The project aimed to achieve a further step in quality product behaviour and process efficiencies. A key area of focus for the project was the reduction of product and process complexity while expanding further the extensive product line-up and the key features of the Daily. www.fleet.ie

Ford Go Electric to Go Further

urrounded by old dormant boilers, storage tanks, lifts and pulleys at the Old Sugar Factory at Halfweg in Amsterdam, Ford of Europe premiered its vision of the future in an electrifying way.

The event was like a big TV talent show with one act better than the other as no less than eight (out of sixteen) new models from its car and van portfolio were put under the bright spotlights at the Go Further Experienced event.

While Ford may not have been the fi rst to take the eMobility road, what was witnessed relating to product development in this specialist area was not only impressive but also surprising. The depth of investment in innovation and customer choice has to be credited.

In addition to petrol-electric hybrid systems created for its car ranges, Ford of Europe is introducing mild-hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid powertrain solutions to enhance the fuel-efficiency of the Transit 2-tonne and Transit Custom vans and the Tourneo Custom 8/9-seater peoplemover.

On the new versions of these existing vehicles either a mild-hybrid (MiHEV), full petrol-electric hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) or full battery electric (BEV) options will be offered. By 2021, the Transit 2-tonne should be ready to market, with a number of body styles available.

Since last year Ford has been involved in producing an all-electric delivery van for DHL Deutsche Post called the Street Scooter Work XL, with the box bodied express courier van being built

on the Transit chassis at the Ford plant in Cologne, Germany. Fleet customers outside of Germany are showing interest in this bespoke concept.

Looking towards a real, immediate alternative to diesel as City Councils look to reduce emissions, noise and congestion, the new Transit EcoBlue Hybrid will have anticipated CO2 emission levels from 144 g/km, with estimated fuel efficiency from 7.6 L/100 km, while the Transit Custom EcoBlue Hybrid will carry 139 g/km and 6.7 L/100 km in fuel consumption.

The WLTP figures for Tourneo Custom (people carrier) EcoBlue Hybrid holds similar figures from 137 g/km and 7.0 L/100 km. Tourneo Custom EcoBlue Hybrids are the first commercials in their classes to offer 48-volt mild hybrid technology that will further reduce fuel

costs (estimated at 3%).

Then there’s the Plug-in Hybrid versions (PHEV) on the Transit Custom set for full production following successful trials in London over the past two years. Th is 1-tonne panel van has its front wheels driven by an electric motor/generator, powered by a 13.6 kWh lithium-ion battery pack allied to Ford’s multi-award winning 1.0 litre EcoBoost petrol engine, acting as a range extender. Together they provide a range distance of 500 km with 50 km available in electric, emission-free mode when required. Up to four driving modules can be engaged while driving.

Alongside these drivetrain innovations are a selection of connected services to enable customers manage their vehicles more easily and increase efficiencies. From predictive maintenance programmes and other services through easy to use mobile phone Apps (FordPass and FordPass Pro) business owners can check the status of each vehicle in the fleet with additional information down-loadable from Ford Telematics installations providing real time data on vehicle and driver performance.

“There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution when it comes to electrification – every customer’s circumstances are different,” Joerg Beyer, Executive Director, Engineering, Ford of Europe. “Ford’s nuanced powertrain strategy is designed to help our customers find the right solution to make their electrified vehicle experience easier and more enjoyable.”

Allied to customer focus on alternative power sources, Ford is expanding its strategic partnerships with accredited

conversion specialists. Currently there are 100 Qualified Vehicle Modifiers (QVM) meeting Ford’s’ criteria, and by 2020 this number will have doubled. Th is will ensure continuous engagement with the dealer as concerns have been heard relating to the profitability threat to network members due to less maintenance required from electric vehicles other than minor parts replacements. As tyres and bodywork are now outsourced, these elements also mean less engagements with their local dealer.

Interestingly, there was no mention throughout the day of the recent alliance formed with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in which Ford will produce and engineer the next 1-tonne Pick-up for both brands (from 2022) along with a 1-tonne van while Volkswagen will concentrate on manufacturing a larger panel van and city van, that will replace the existing Transit and Crafter model ranges.

All future electric vehicles will be supported by the IONITY consortium that aims to build 400 stations in key European locations by 2020. In Ireland, Circle K will open one such collaborative charging point at its North Point service station on the M1 Dublin-Belfast motorway.

Jeep Wrangler comes to the rescue

T

he strength, reliability and incredible 4x4 capability of the Jeep Wrangler has been demonstrated once again after an owner recently used his one to tow a stranded Mercedes-Benz Actros tractor-unit from a snowdrift.

The articulated truck had been stuck at the side of the road in heavy snow and was blocking an ambulance with a patient on board. But owner Mark Blessed, of St Austell, Cornwall, latched on his 20-year-old Wrangler to the stricken truck and helped haul it to safety. It was one of several vehicles that Mark selflessly helped out of trouble during a night of heavy snowstorms in Cornwall earlier this year. And those neighbourly and brave actions earned Mark a flurry of nominations for radio station Pirate FM’s Local Heroes Awards.

“Somehow my little Jeep managed to tow a 40-tonne lorry and let him go on his way,” said Mark. “So many people were standing and cheering – it just goes to show how one litt le thing that you

do affects so many different people along the way. I just did a good deed, not to be recognised.”

“We were inundated with nominations for hundreds of very deserving people in Cornwall, but Mark really stood out as the epitome of a good neighbour,” said event organiser Holly Day, from Pirate FM.

Alonso tries Toyota Gazoo Racing’s Toyota Hilux

H

igh profi le motor-racing driver Fernando Alonso recently spent two days in a Toyota Hilux, learning the specific demands of rally raid during an exclusive test in the Kalahari Desert.

Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa organised the test, in which Alonso tackled two routes in the Kalahari Desert, experiencing rally-raid driving for the first time. He was given expert guidance from Giniel de Villiers, a former Dakar winner and regular competitor for Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa.

The Toyota Hilux which won the 2019 Dakar Rally, in the hands of Nasser Al Attiyah and Mathieu Baumel, is powered by a 5.0-litre V8 engine that produces 380hp and 620Nm of torque.

Fernando commented on the experience: “I followed the Dakar and thanks to Toyota Gazoo Racing I had the opportunity to come to South Africa to test the Dakar-winning Hilux. I have

tested different series and different cars these past couple of years and this was a great chance. It has been fun; certainly different to what I am used to driving, but very interesting. We built up speed slowly, learning lap after lap. It’s not easy to read the bumps and to know how much speed to carry but I became more confident each time. The Hilux feels great; it has good grip and balance, lots of power and impressive braking. It felt incredible to drive this car.”

Volkswagen Amarok shines in new Adventure book

Pick-Up Buyers Guide 2019

D

espite probably a broader selection of vehicles than any time previously, the Pick-Up truck market in Ireland continues to remain fairly niche. Annual sales for the segment hover somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500 units, with 2016 having been the high-point for the sector.

That said, figures for the fi rst three months of 2019 suggest this could be a positive year for Pick-Ups, bucking the trend of general falling sales in the commercial sector. Of the major players, Ford, Nissan and Volkswagen have all recorded better results than in the same period last year, with Toyota’s sales remaining constant, while the likes of Mitsubishi are eagerly awaiting all-new models later this year.

Robert Montgomery of Mitsubishi Motors Ireland attributes some of this year’s growth to the demise of the N1 category of 5-seater commercials. “The Pick-Up Market is 16% up on the same period in 2018, which is a particularly strong performance against the backdrop of the LCV market that is down -9.2% year to date.

Th is growth is partially att ributable to the discontinuation of 5-seater SUV Commercial sales last year and reflects the increase in the appeal of the Pick-up as an alternative that embodies SUV comfort with the robust qualities of a tough utility vehicle.”

‘The Pick-Up market in Ireland is defi nitely increasing as more and more people see the benefit of these vehicles for combining work and leisure activity,” said Ciarán McMahon, Chairman & Managing Director, Ford Ireland, and producer of the Ranger, Ireland’s most popular Pick-Up model. “Needless to say, as with other CV products, sales of Pick-Ups are heavily driven by the level of growth in the general economy.”

That’s echoed by Fergus Conheady, Commercial Vehicle Sales Manager at Mercedes-Benz Ireland who sees the Pick-Up segment remaining quite stable compared to last year, at around 1,200 units.

Neil O’Sullivan, Head of Sales at Nissan Ireland sees the building boom as helping the Pick-Up sector grow. “The 4x4 Pick-up market has seen a strong growth in demand in 2019 and has grown by 15%. The Nissan Navara sales have increased by 40% in the fi rst quarter. Th is is against an overall LCV market decline of 10%. We att ribute this growth mainly to our strong business lease fi nancial offer that allows a business user to avail of a €99 per week ex-VAT payment, there is also the recovering construction sector combined with recent tax changes for crew cabs which are encouraging potential customers to look again at the Double Cab 4x4 Pick-Up solution.”

As Ford’s Ciarán McMahon noted, Pick-Ups occupy a somewhat unique position in the vehicle market, straddling the commercial segment with the passenger car market. With the vast majority sold as double-cab variants, Pick-Ups can transport up to five people in comfort while having the ability to go off-road or carry loads in excess of one-tonne. Then there is their towing capacity of up to 3.5 tonnes.

Indeed some manufacturers are whole-heartedly addressing this juxtaposition, with a number of brands now offering top of the range models that have more in common with a luxury car than a building site workhorse.

It has recently been updated with revisions to the styling, suspension and the interior which save weight and improve refi nement.

Power is provided via a 1.9 litre turbodiesel which replaced the previous 2.5 litre unit. It has 164 hp and 360 Nm of torque.

Load carrying capacity maxes out at 1,225kg while the D-Max can pull up to 3.5 tonnes.

Mercedes-Benz Models offered: X-Class Variants: Double-Cab Prices: From €39,950 inc VAT Mercedes-Benz’s fi rst foray into the Pick-Up market shares its underpinnings with the Nissan Navara but has its own unique identity. It comes in three trims of Pure, Progressive and Power, with the former aimed fi rmly as the workhorse vehicle in the range compared to the more lifestyle oriented trims on the Progressive and Power models. The Pure model can be had as a 2WD only or with 4MATIC all wheel drive; all other versions come with 4WD. Engine options are at the Nissan derived 163 hp X220 d or a 190 hp X250 d with a capacity of 2.3 litres. A six speed manual or 7-speed auto are the transmission options.

Payloads of up to 1,067kg and a towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes on the X250 d 4MATIC (3.2 tonnes besides) are available.

Although not listed on the Mercedes-Benz Ireland website, Mercedes-Benz also produces a flagship X350 d which is powered

by a 3.0 litre V6 turbo diesel producing 258 hp and 550Nm of torque matched to the brand’s own 7G-Tronic Plus seven-speed automatic gearbox.

Mitsubishi Models offered: L200 Variants: Single and Double-Cab Prices: From €26,995 (Single Cab) / €30,250 (Double-Cab) inc VAT The well-regarded current L200 is now in its run-down phase with a new model arriving in September - it will be launched at the Ploughing Championship in Carlow. The new L200 will boast a higher quality interior and new technology including an ‘Off-Road Mode’, Active Driver Assistance systems including Forward Collision Mitigation, Blind Spot Warning,Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Ultrasonic Mis-acceleration Mitigation System.

A smaller capacity 2.2 diesel engine will be Euro 6d-TEMP compliant and will connect to a new 6-speed auto gearbox or 6-speed manual. Full specifications and prices will be revealed nearer the launch date.

Now operating under a new importer and distributor in Ireland - SsangYong Automotive Ireland - the Musso is based on the same platform as the Rexton, and is available in two trims of ES and EL. A 2.2 litre turbodiesel with 178 bhp provides pulling power and is offered with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed auto transmission.

Arriving this month is the Musso Grand which boasts a 40cm longer deck than the regular Musso.

Talking about the new Musso, SsangYong Automotive Ireland Country Manager, John McKenna explained: “In the past the SsangYong Rexton qualified for the Utility status, but now with that loop hole closed the Musso and Musso Grand are what we

16 | BUYERS' GUIDE Volkswagen Models offered: Amarok Variants: Double-Cab Prices: From €48,120 inc VAT Reigning IPUA champion, the Volkswagen Amarok is fi rmly positioned at the upper end of the Pick-Up sector. It reverses the trend of engine downsizing in the segment, having originally been powered by a 2.0 litre diesel when most of its rivals were using bigger capacity units, but now uses a 3.0 litre TDI V6 with power outputs of 204 hp and 258 hp. Towing capacity is 3.5 tonnes for the 258 hp powered engine, 3.0 tonnes for the less powerful engine. Payloads range from 672kg to 800kg, with the Amarok boasting the widest load platform in the class. There’s a choice of 6-speed manual or 8-speed auto gearboxes.

Three trims of Comfortline, Highline and Aventura are offered, all generously specified. The range topping Aventura includes items

such as ErgoComfort seats, Winter Pack, a load compartment coating and 20” alloy wheels.

What else - New brands planning to launch models While the above eight brands currently offer models, the market continues to evolve, with a number of new products from new players set to arrive in the not too distant future.

Hyundai The Korean giant is known to be working on a Pick-Up project possibly by 2021. It will be designed around the Santa Cruz concept shown at Detroit four years ago. A Kia version may be in the offi ng too.

Renault Although the Nissan Navara derived Alaskan has been on sale for a couple of years now, Renault has so far resisted producing right hand drive versions. However in discussions with Fleet Van & Utility at the recent Renault Pro+ event in Paris the company indicated it is currently reevaluating whether to enter the UK and Irish markets.

LDV T60 One model that will be eagerly awaited is the new LDV T60. The Chinese brand owned by SAIC and distributed in Ireland and the UK by the Harris Group has become a familiar sight on Irish roads thanks to its V80 van, but with that product a carryover from its British owned heritage, there is a deal of anticipation about a number of all-new products on the way. Expect a fully modern vehicle with all the latest technology, a new 2.0-litre engine, a one-tonne payload and a 3-tonne towing capacity.

Further information should be revealed later this year.

Land Rover Defender An all-new successor to the venerable and iconic original which ceased production in 2016 is set to be revealed later this year with deliveries starting in 2020. No defi nite confi rmation of a Pick-Up version, but the company certainly isn’t denying that such variant will be produced.

PSA Peugeot-Citroën-Opel Groupe PSA has announced its intention to build Pick-Ups in cooperation with Chinese company ChangAn Automobiles, but other than a planned launch in 2021, has not provided additional information at present.

Ford / Volkswagen Collaboration The announcement that Ford and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles are to collaborate on future commercial vehicle models means we can expect a great deal of similarity between the next generation Ranger and Amarok, probably in 2022.

Few details have been forthcoming other than the initial announcement which suggested that Ford would be the lead partner in developing the next generation of Pick-Up. Watch this space.

Fiat’s Fullback farewell…..will Jeep’s Gladiator grace Right Hand Drive markets?

Sadly, one brand leaving the Pick-Up sector is Fiat. Its Fullback, a model share programme with Mitsubishi only sold in limited numbers (gett ing hold of a consistent supply was a challenge for the Irish importer leading at times to extended delivery delays), but has now come to an end. While we look forward to the arrival of the next generation L200, there won’t be a successor to the current Fullback, with the last models in the country having been sold early this year.

However the good news for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) fans is that a medium sized Jeep Gladiator Pick-Up is to be launched in Europe in 2020, though whether right hand drive versions will be produced remains to be seen. That’s the case also for the Ram Rebel, imported into selected markets in Europe since last year by Klintberg & Way Automotive (KWA) into, but not presently the UK or Ireland.

Renault LCV finds new Dimensions

S

hort-to-medium term vans of the future have been launched by Renault’s commercial vehicle division at Groupe Renault’s Technocentre near Paris. Apart from the expected revamp of the Master and Trafic light commercial ranges, two surprises were unveiled – a Kangoo Z.E. Concept and the EZ-Flex e-commerce delivery prototype. Newly appointed Alliance Vice President for the Renault Nissan Light Commercial Business, Denis Le Vot aims to continue the ongoing global sales success of the Renault Commercial Vehicle brands following in the footsteps of Ashwani Gupta, who has moved to a senior position at Mitsubishi Motors Corporation in Japan. During his tenure, Mr. Ashwani oversaw an impressive turnover expansion from €6.8bn in 2013 to €10.6bn in 2018.

With the current and future model line-up Renault is offering improved diesel engines alongside a growing fleet of electric vehicles, all in the effort to maintain its No. 1 position in sales terms in Europe and South America, together with a dominant share of the electric mobility market. Resulting from its joint venture with Asian manufacturer, Brilliance, integration of the Alliance technology in its Jinbei branded commercials (to include electric power) is already paying dividends. Include

further product supply deals with its Nissan and Mitsubishi Alliance partners and that leading position looks strong. Mr. Le Vot mentioned that Nissan is to reintroduce the Kubistar compact van based on the Kangoo and renamed the NV250, while Mitsubishi will re-enter the 1-tonne + panel van market globally with a version of the Renault Trafic.

While Europe remains Renault’s major marketplace for commercials, it is in South America and China that the graph in the sales charts is pointing highest. Almost doubling market share in these regions with a refreshed model line-up is a great sense of achievement for all at Renault HQ in Paris, but the big challenge ahead is to maintain that level of growth against a tide of uncertainty including political, economic and currency fluctuations in markets such as Argentina, Portugal and Turkey and of course in the UK with the Brexit situation. Its ability to continue that upwards spiral will be down to its product offering and associated solutions packaged or tailor made for its customers.

Master’s significant makeover Sold in 50 countries worldwide, the Renault Master has benefitted from a significant makeover with a fresh new look both outside and inside the vehicle. According to Laurens van den Acker, Executive VP Corporate Design at Groupe Renault: “New Master has a more robust front end, enhanced by LED lights, a larger chrome grille and higher bonnet profi le,” while the completely new interior offers more driver functionality and comfort features with numerous safety assistance programmes, as well as more efficient and powerful engines. On the latter, max power from the new 2.3 litre Energy Euro 6d temps diesel is at 180hp/400Nm with fuel economy improved by 1 litre per 100 kilometres. A 6-speed automated transmission is now available on the two high power outputs – the aforementioned 180hp and a 150hp dCi. A 130hp dCi is also offered.

A higher quality fit and fi nish helps to transform the Master’s interior along with new steering wheel, gear handle, additional storage and for most markets, a pop out dining shelf/worktop and additional large cup holder. For RHD markets this innovative feature is replaced by a passenger airbag. A compromise of safety over convenience. A fully interactive smartphone compatible touchscreen brings the vehicle into today’s age of communication, navigation and audio tastes as well as offering the fleet management/telematics output needed to help operators run a more efficient fleet.

Little has changed at the load end of the panel van versions, except for the installation of additional grab handles and twin-LED interior lighting bars. Add side wind assist and blind spot warning to make the new Master’s movements all the more safer.

New engine for Trafic Two million sales later and the fourth incarnation Trafic gains a series of similar embellishments with a face-lift and moderate interior modifications. The biggest change however is with the drivetrain, with a new 2.0 litre single turbo E6d Energy diesel replacing the award winning 1.6 dCi Energy versions.

Power output from these blocks include 120hp/320Nm and 145hp/350Nm versions with the range topping 170hp boasting 380 Nm. The latter two units offer both manual and auto transmissions. New Trafic panel van and passenger variant (called SpaceClass) share the upgrades in similar fashion with other versions to follow such as the campervan and rough terrain traction models.

Offering an average payload of 250kg, ten such vehicles will go on a two-year trial with blue chip operators within major cities across Europe with ongoing evolutions to the product during the evaluation process. Today, it measures 3.86m long, 1.65m wide and is 1.88m high, all adding up to offer a 3m3 load capacity.

“Its 4.5mm turning circle provides excellent manoeuvrability in city centres,” added Denis. Easy ingress and egress, driverfriendly centrally positioned touch screen dashboard and side loading/unloading through lift up door panels are said to be its main traits. EZ-Flex’s EV range distance is estimated at 150km (well above the surveyed average of 50 km per day required).

of Design: “First of all, I think Albert Kirzinger, (who accompanied him during the interview) did a great job, bringing this iconic design a step forward. We can still see and feel the roots, the DNA of the brand, which is quite important. We are preparing the family once again, prepare for everything that lies ahead.”

“Towards autonomous driving perhaps?” I asked. “Autonomous driving is an important future task, there are lots of things to happen first, upgrading the technology, testing it, but it will take some time before full Level 5 autonomy will arrive.”

H

einz-Jürgen Löw is one of the most experienced Commercial Vehicle Executives in the business, having spent most of his career in top positions at Renault Trucks, MAN Truck & Bus and currently with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

During his time as president of Renault Trucks he oversaw the creation of the multi-award winning Range T and then after the move back to his native Germany, helped with the resurgence of MAN Truck & Bus as it became a major player within the Volkswagen Truck & Bus family (now rebranded Tracton Group).

Now his task at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is to oversee new product developments, increase sales and be part of the negotiation team within the company that’s forming an alliance with Ford Motor Company in Europe. Heinz-Jürgen is primarily a people’s person, enthusiastic, motivated and focused. We renewed our long held acquaintances at bauma 2019, where the new Volkswagen T6.1 van range was launched.

At the press briefing Heinz-Jürgen was as approachable and amiable as ever. When asked about the continuous evolution of Volkswagen’s best selling van model he began by praising the brand’s Head FLEETVAN&UTILITY | Summer 2019

But what about electrification? “Yes, electrification will come first before autonomous. We have the capability within Volkswagen AG (Group) and presently we are also working with ABT (Audi Schaeffler) to help speed up the process.

As you know ABT won Formula E motorracing series last year, and these guys know what’s going on.”

Heinz-Jürgen was then asked about the Transporter 7, prototypes of same secretly seen last year by members of the IVOTY jury and he replied that the T7 will primarily be a passenger car (people carrier). Separately, the I.D. Buzz Cargo concept, promoted in recent times at motor shows around the world; “will be more or less positioned in the city van segment when you consider its payload, its cubic metres of load space. In a couple of years from now, we will have a really wide product range, probably the widest on the market for a customer to choose according to their needs.”

On the collaboration with Ford: “Yes, of course, this is one of the major topics for us as we further prepare for the future.

What we are talking about right now is the successor of the Amarok Pick-up. This will be the first step and then down the road, it’s not fully decided where and how to go, but clearly we are considering a city van, and then it’s the next generation of the T6 but where it will be manufactured is not decided right now.”

By mentioning city van, he means the replacement for the Caddy; the next version will share its technology with Ford to provide the new generation Transit

Connect. In the short-term, the focus is on ongoing developments, according to HeinzJürgen: “We are still committed to deliver first class, premium products and recently announced that we are spending €1.8 billion on research and new developments which includes electrification of vehicles, new concepts and you will hear much more about connectivity.”

And back to the question on autonomous vehicles, Heinz-Jürgen is a realist. “Frankly speaking, I believe the fi rst driverless vehicles we will see will be in enclosed areas, such as harbours, manufacturing sites with container movements carried out remotely. Then in time it will spread out into other areas – city centres.” He gave Singapore as an example, because of its traffic congestion. “So, we will see different tipping points in different regions of the world. Personally, I believe that the US will be one of the first and then China.”

Eventually, the return to eMobility arose and Heinz-Jürgen’s concern is that the infrastructure is not good enough. “We need Government intervention everywhere.

It’s a huge topic in all countries. A recent study in Germany asked operatives who were considering buying a new commercial vehicle in the next 6 to 12 months and I was positively surprised that 48% have taken into account electric vehicles as their top choice. But first of all we have to make electric vehicles available for customers, they have to really get to experience behind the wheel, it’s another way of driving.”

Then there’s the cost issue, “Difficult to make a calculation at present,” said Heinz-Jürgen. “Europe is totally scattered with subsidiaries, subventions, there are special taxes on CO2 in cities and reduced taxes on electric company vehicles. What is needed is pan-European compatibility.

For now we are developing a business case for the electric eCrafter van range that is similar to combustion engine versions, this is complicated as you really have to go deeper country by country, even region by region, but think about London, if you have to go to the city centre and you have to pay – but in France you can save a lot of money in cost of ownership as French electric energy is so cheap. Lots of stuff to take into consideration for the eMobility road ahead,” he concluded.

New Volkswagen Transporter 6.1 debuts been greatly enhanced by brand new features in the redesigned at bauma 2019 cab. These include a 230-volt electric socket beside the driver’s seat and a lockable compartment under the double bench seat on the passenger side. In addition, a new way of loading long items of cargo has been devised; they can now be pushed under the double bench seat on the passenger side (under-seat loading function). Th is increases the maximum cargo compartment length from 2,450 mm to 2,800 mm (in the extended wheelbase version from 2,900 mm to 3,300 mm). The Transporter 6.1 is also equipped with a separate cargo space locking system as standard (panel van and Kombi with bulkhead). Th is allows the cargo compartment to be locked up separately from the cab.

ollowing the world premiere of the Multivan 6.1 in February, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles premiered the new Transporter 6.1 at the world’s biggest construction exhibition in Munich, where, from 8 to 14 April, over half a million visitors are expected from more than 200 countries.

The latest version of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ best selling van range debuted at the Munich Messe with a variety of vehicle body variants, including a panel van, a Kombi (people carrier) and single and double cab dropside versions.

Added safety from new driver assistance systems are key elements of the 6.1 update of the sixth Transporter generation. That’s due to the technical changes which go way beyond any normal model update. An example of this is seen in the switch from hydraulic to electro-mechanical power steering – a system replacement that normally happens within a product line only when it moves to a completely new generation.

As a result of the electromechanical steering, a whole new spectrum of driver assistance systems have been developed and added, thereby offering a significant increase in safety and convenience. The new assistance systems include technologies such as Lane Assist (actively keeps the vehicle in its lane), Park Assist (enables parking with automatic steering), side protection (warns if gett ing dangerously close to obstacles or pedestrians), Rear Traffic Alert (provides protection when reversing out of a parking space) and Trailer Assist (automatic steering makes manoeuvring with a trailer easier). Th is selection of new systems is complimented by a dynamic Road Sign Display function (available in combination with navigation system). Another standard feature of the panel van and Kombi is the new Cross Wind Assist system. It stabilises the Transporter 6.1 if it gets caught by a strong gust of wind, for example on a bridge or open motorway. Also fitted as standard: the Post-Collision Braking System and Hill Start Assist.

Added value from enhanced standard specification is another area of concentration with new features on all versions like electric windows, central locking, electrically adjustable heated wing mirrors, new H7 headlights, bright, energy-efficient interior lights using energy-efficient LED technology and the Composition Audio radio system with Bluetooth hands-free function.

Connectivity is the buzz word in the automotive industry these days and the design team at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has tailored the workspace in the Transporter 6.1 to meet the requirements of the digital world. Now available as an option is the third generation of the modular infotainment matrix (MIB3).

Its new systems enable use of completely new applications and online services. The most important feature of the new vehicle electrical system architecture is an integrated SIM card (eSIM).

Th is eSIM opens up a new array of Web-based functions and services.

Powering the new armada of T6s are revised, efficient diesel engines with power outputs from 90 to 199 PS, based on the 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine. The 2.0 TDI engines deliver 66 kW / 90 PS, 81 kW / 110 PS, 110 kW / 150 PS and 146 kW / 199 PS respectively. They all meet the latest Euro-6d-TEMP emissions standard. The 110 kW and 146 kW versions will optionally be available with all-wheel drive (4MOTION).

Based on a partnership with ABT, the Transporter 6.1 will also be offered as a zero-emission all-electric vehicle (82 kW / 112 PS) with a payload of almost 1.2 tonnes. Battery capacities of up to 77.6 kWh enable driving ranges of more than 400 km (NEDC) – making the electric versions ideal for commercial use in the urban world.
