driveability, energy efficiency, environmental performance and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). The 2027 result marks the fourth consecutive year that a battery-electric truck has won the International Truck of the Year title, underlining the rapid progress being made in zero- tailpipe-emission heavy-duty transport. Four of the five vehicles shortlisted for the 2027 award were battery-electric, while the new Ford F-Max demonstrated that development of the conventional powertrain continues in parallel.

Volvo Trucks Electrics wins the 50th International Truck of the Year Award 2027

Volvo’s winning new electric range represents a major evolution of the manufacturer’s battery-electric heavy-duty offering. The revised range covers a wide variety of transport applications, from regional and construction operations to demanding long-haul work, while introducing new driveline solutions, greater configuration flexibility and significantly extended operating ranges.

For the second time in recent years, Volvo Trucks’ new electric range has been elected International Truck of the Year. Spanning the FH, FM, FMX and FH Aero Electric ranges, the new generation impressed the 24-member jury with its combination of extended range, broad application coverage, energy efficiency and operational flexibility. The 2027 trophy was presented to Roger Alm, President Volvo Trucks, during the Night of the Stars Gala evening at IAA Transportation in Hanover, Germany on 14 September last. In the 2027 competition, which celebrates its 50th anniversary, Volvo Trucks finished ahead of a highly competitive field comprising the new Ford Trucks F-Max, IVECO S-eWay Tractor, MAN eTGM and Mercedes-Benz eArocs 400.

The FH Aero Electric with extended range offers a claimed range distance of up to 700km on a single charge, opening the door to a much broader spectrum of long-distance operations. At the same time, the next-generation FH, FM and FMX Electric Versatile models offer ranges of up to 470km, providing operators with a flexible platform for different transport tasks and duty cycles. During the jury assessment, members particularly highlighted the way Volvo has developed its electric portfolio beyond a single vehicle or application. The combination of longer range, different cab and chassis configurations and solutions tailored to long-haul, regional, distribution and construction transport demonstrated how battery-electric technology is increasingly becoming a practical alternative across a broad spectrum of heavy-duty operations. Florian Engel, Chairman of the International Truck of the Year Jury, summarised: “With its new electric range, Volvo Trucks demonstrates how quickly battery-electric heavy-duty transport is moving from individual applications towards a comprehensive transport solution.”

In line with the rules of the International Truck of the Year (IToY), the title is awarded annually to the vehicle introduced in the previous 12 months that has made the greatest contribution to road transport efficiency. The assessment covers a range of criteria, including technological innovation, comfort, safety, FLEETTRANSPORT | OCTOBER 26

The award also marks another important milestone for Volvo Trucks in the transition towards zero-tailpipe-emission transport. Having already made history when the Volvo FH Electric became the first battery-electric truck to win the International Truck of the Year title in 2024.

NEW GENERATION DAF

Tested.Trusted.Proven.

“

Our latest DAF XGs have become the go-to truck for our flat-bed work; strong, reliable and extremely comfortable. At the same time, we’re seeing real efficiency gains from our 2025 DAF XF units on tanker duties, with around a 0.8 mpg improvement over the previous trucks. That’s a big saving across the fleet, both in cost and CO₂. Between the XG and the XF, DAF has the balance exactly right for our operations.

ZF TraXon Hybrid transmission wins 2027 Truck Innovation Award in which the transition to fully electric heavy-duty vehicles is progressing at different speeds in different applications.

ZF Friedrichshafen AG has won the 2027 Truck Innovation Award for its TraXon Hybrid transmission system, recognised by the International Truck of the Year (IToY) jury as the year’s most outstanding innovation in commercial vehicle technology. On behalf of the jury of 25 renowned trade journalists Florian Engel, Chairman IToY, presented the prestigious award to Andreas Moser, Member of the Board of Management ZF Friedrichshafen AG, during the Night of the Stars gala evening held at the IAA Transportation in Hanover on Monday, September 14th 2026. The Truck Innovation Award – which recognises stand-out technological transformation and energy transition taking place in the commercial vehicle industry – is hosted and presented annually by the International Truck of the Year (IToY) jury for the past number of years. With TraXon Hybrid, ZF integrates hybrid technology directly into the transmission architecture of heavy commercial vehicles. The system combines ZF’s established expertise in heavy-duty transmissions with its experience in electrified powertrains, providing vehicle manufacturers with an additional route towards reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The concept is particularly relevant for markets and transport applications FLEETTRANSPORT | OCTOBER 26

By integrating an electric drive into the TraXon transmission platform, the system enables manufacturers to incorporate hybrid functionality into conventional driveline architectures while retaining the flexibility required for a broad range of heavy-duty applications. In addition, TraXon Hybrid can support several functions associated with electrified powertrains, including recuperation of braking energy, electric assistance of the combustion engine and electric driving depending on the respective vehicle configuration and application. In this way, hybridisation can reduce the workload of the combustion engine and improve overall drivetrain efficiency, particularly in operating conditions with frequent changes in speed and load. The solution also demonstrates how established heavy-duty powertrain technologies can continue to evolve during the transition towards zero-emission transport. Rather than relying on a single technological pathway, TraXon Hybrid provides truck manufacturers with an additional option for improving efficiency and reducing emissions while adapting their product strategies to different infrastructure, regulatory and operational conditions around the world. ZF prevailed over four other finalists representing some of the most significant current areas of innovation in road freight transport: BYD’s Flash

Charging and Blade Battery 2.0, cellcentric’s BZA375 Fuel Cell, the Level 4 autonomous driving programme from IVECO and PlusAI, and Scania ProDriver. The jury recognised TraXon Hybrid for combining a high degree of technical innovation with clear potential for practical application in heavy-duty transport. The technology offers manufacturers another means of reducing fuel consumption and emissions while supporting the transition towards increasingly electrified commercial vehicle powertrains.

At the award ceremony, IToY jury chairman Florian Engel emphasised: “By intelligent integration of hybridisation into a proven Heavy-Duty Transmission platform, ZF TraXon Hybrid demonstrates that the transition towards more sustainable road freight transport is defined by a wide portfolio of different technologies.”

NEWS 1 8 | INTERVIEW

One to One: With Harald Seidel on his departure from DAF Trucks

Handing Over the Wheel

After 25 years with DAF Trucks, including four years as President and CEO, Harald Seidel is leaving the company with a touch of nostalgia, but his decision has been carefully considered. “We have achieved a great deal together. Now it is time for the next chapter.” How would you describe the state of DAF Trucks as you leave? “Extremely good. We have a strong team that is ready for the future. With the complete New Generation DAF range, from XD to XG+, the largest cab in the industry and a full zero-emission portfolio, DAF is in an excellent position. The past four years have been all about electrification for me. When I started, there was mainly a plan. We then launched the Electric Truck Assembly facility, further developed our electric trucks, started production and learned together with dealers and customers how electric transport really works. It goes far beyond simply selling a truck. Today, you are selling a complete solution. You look at charging infrastructure, energy management, the business case and how a transport operator needs to adapt its entire operation. We have gone through that learning process together with our customers.” What do you consider your greatest success as President? “Receiving the International Truck of the Year award twice. The first time, in 2023, I thought it was probably something you experience only once in your lifetime. When it happened a second time for 2026, it felt like tremendous confirmation of DAF’s innovative strength and quality. But ultimately, it is not a personal award. It is recognition for the entire DAF team. Everyone contributed to it. That is probably what I am most proud of.” And what was the most difficult part? “The moments when you have to disappoint customers. We have travelled a road of trial and error with our electric trucks. At one point, we deliberately decided to postpone series production because the quality was not yet where it needed to be. Then you have to tell customers that their truck will arrive later than agreed. Those are not pleasant conversations. That is why I personally visited several customers to explain why we FLEETTRANSPORT | OCTOBER 26

made that decision. Today, I see that those same customers are ordering more new electric DAF trucks. That tells you the delay was ultimately the right choice.” You have been active within RAI Association and previously ACEA. How do you view the European truck market? “I see a healthy market, but also a sector that is under considerable pressure. Transport operators are facing high costs, extensive regulation and an enormous sustainability challenge. At the same time, in my view, they still receive too little appreciation. I often say that road transport is the lifeline of our economy. Without trucks, supermarket shelves would be empty and industry would come to a halt. That realisation deserves much greater recognition. The profession of truck driver also deserves more societal appreciation. In addition, the European automotive industry is under tremendous pressure. We are investing billions in new technologies and sustainability. We fully support those objectives, but manufacturers cannot deliver the transition on their own.” What would you most like to see change in the truck and transport sector? “The framework conditions need to improve much faster. The electric trucks are here. Now the business case for transport operators and the charging infrastructure must follow. You cannot achieve sustainability with just a few charging stations along the motorway. Governments, energy companies and industry need to work together far more intensively. I also hope that in Brussels, the competitiveness of European manufacturing will be considered at least as important as sustainability targets. The two must go hand in hand.” Your departure marks a break with tradition. Many DAF Presidents moved on to PACCAR in the United States. You are not, why? “That opportunity certainly existed. I would also have enjoyed working in the United States for a number of years. But in the end, my family situation was decisive. Four years ago, I expected that by now all of our children would be living independently. A year ago, it became clear that two of our three children were still living at home and that we actually need one another very much at this stage of life. For me, family always comes first. I am happy when my family is happy.”

INTERVIEW | 9 Were you always able to switch off from work? “Yes, I was actually quite good at that. Once I closed the office door behind me, my mind was free. Of course, a lot is expected of you. You are almost always switched on. But I was always able to keep my work in perspective. That is partly due to my Catholic background and the values that come with it. I have never attached much importance to status, money or power. I have always been more interested in humility and being of service to others.” So you are not going to PACCAR. Am I right in understanding that you are retiring? “Formally, I am taking early retirement and bringing my career at DAF to a close. But I certainly will not be putting my feet up. There are several interesting opportunities coming my way, both executive and non-executive. I will definitely take on something new, but deliberately not within the automotive or transport sector. My first priority was to devote all my attention to ensuring a smooth handover to my successor. You will hear soon enough what comes next.” What do you wish the new DAF President, Jim Walenczak, and DAF Trucks? “I hope DAF remains true to its unique culture. DAF was founded by two brothers: one brought innovation, the other entrepreneurship. That combination is still embedded in the company’s DNA today. Even though the Van Doorne family has not owned the company for many years, DAF still feels like a family business. People look after one another, help each other and do everything possible together for the customer. You could see that during the semiconductor crisis, when everyone thought creatively about keeping production running. I wish Jim every success in strengthening that culture as DAF moves towards its 100th anniversary in 2028. It is precisely that combination of innovation, entrepreneurship and togetherness that makes DAF Trucks special.” Will you always consider yourself a DAF man, even after leaving? “Absolutely. After 25 years, you never really leave a company like this behind. DAF will always have a place in my heart.”

In previous interviews, you appeared to have an entire catalogue of sayings and words of wisdom. Do you have one final quote for readers? Seidel laughs briefly before answering without hesitation. “The moment you think you know everything, you stop learning.” “I have experienced that myself. When I was Chief Financial Officer, I thought I knew DAF inside out. But when I became President, a completely new world opened up to me: factories, dealers and customers. You only learn when you continue to listen. The same applies to the development of our trucks. One of the greatest compliments I ever received came from a transport operator who is part of our customer advisory board. He climbed into the New Generation DAF and said: ‘You have truly listened to us.’ That may well be the most important lesson I am taking with me. Stay curious. Keep listening. Because only then do you continue to improve.” Text: Arjan Velthoven, TTM.nl - IToY

for a generation and longer. Over the decades the 3.5 to 7.5 tonne plus models have served their broad customer base loyally and without fuss. The vehicle’s simplicity is its forte, shouldered by reliability, durability and low running costs. While the range may have received some minor updates over the years, the new version for Model Year 2026 is substantially improved and different.

Back in November last year at the Solutrans exhibition in Lyon, France, the new Isuzu Truck line-up was premiered, and rightfully gained a lot of attention. The new cab design of the NLR 3.5-tonne model with its bull-nose shape, drew most curiosity, developed purposefully to meet new General Safety Regulations (GSR II), aimed at protecting pedestrians and other FLEETTRANSPORT | OCTOBER 26

New NPR now has a sharper more pronounced appearance with new grille, LED lights, bumper and wipers with integrated windscreen washers. Inside, in order to reduce weight some of the body panels are now made from plastic instead of pressed steel, allowing for cheaper replacement and benefiting from being rust free of course. Just to the rear of the cab, on the kerb side, are two small square sensors meeting the GSR II legislation. Inside the cabin feels spacious, with good cross-cab access available if needed. Once in position on the weight gauged suspended seat, the new steering wheel with multi-functional

COVER | 11 controls, along with the larger centre console and 7” centre dash screen are the most significant improvements made. Located next to the new 6-speed automated gearbox lever are the automatic parking brake, auto hold lever and Eco driving switch, all important upgrades, while all around the cab, there are ample stowage areas of varying shapes and sizes to suit many bits n’ bobs. These can be found on the centre dash, between and behind the seats, the door panels and also on the roof line. The full dash area is fairly flat and finished off in dark plastic trim that’s easy to clean. The key principle of operating the Isuzu N-series is simplicity. Ease of access and egress, ready to drive ability, and access anywhere due to its narrow dimensions. There is a grab handle on the A-pillar to aid entry and departure, while another advantage is the excellent all round visibility aided by the fitting of a digital rear view mirror. Regarding the advanced safety systems on board, there’s Blind Spot and Traffic sign recognition, Distance warning, Tyre Pressure Monitoring and Driver drowsiness alerts. Powering the unit is a 5.2-litre Euro 6 diesel that produces 210 PS @2,600 rpm with up to 510 Nm of torque from 1,600 rpm. This drivetrain is completed with the new Isuzu Smooth Intelligent Transmission (ISIM) 9-speed automated gearshift. Featured behind the cab of the vehicle reviewed here was a 4.6m double steel dropside body, made by Monread Truck Bodies, Naas. County Kildare. While the N-series cab covers these light to medium duty models, there is also a Crew Cab version available on the 7.5-tonne variant. These new models are produced in Japan, unlike the current models manufactured in Italy, some with complete body built options. There are plans to increase the model line with increased load capacity to 13-tonnes, which will get a separate model designation called the F-series. First Drive The inaugural trip began from the heart of Isuzu in Ireland at the Harris Group headquarters on the Naas Road, Dublin, from where we headed west towards Kinnegad, County Westmeath, taking in the motorway route outwards and the old national primary on the return, thus enabling us to see how the new NPR fared on differing road profiles. The revised layout for the driver, which includes the new driving position, a more compact and perfectly sized steering wheel, together with the resetting of the foot pedals have resulted in an easy to drive vehicle, helped also by the efficient powertrain. Engaging the gearbox is not a problem when setting off and throughout the journey the movement up and down the nine speed box didn’t flinch. Even over the speed bumps at Clonard, the ‘thud’ was minimised with good off the foot deceleration and with changes made to the suspension system. When one considers that the N-series origins date back to 1959, (where it was sold as the Elf in its homeland), it has served its customers worldwide very well. With the long awaited revisions made to the new models, Isuzu Truck can look to the future with confidence, ready to serve another new generation of owners and operators.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks - Building up a strong construction fleet There is much more to Mercedes-Benz Trucks than we think. While its Actros, Arocs, Zetros, Atego and Econic fleet of heavy to light duty trucks cover almost every application required, there are some operations that the global brand goes the extra mile. Take for instance, the construction segment. Multi-axle versions of the Actros and Arocs cater for this on-road/off-road sector. They have recently been joined by the all electric eArocs 400. At the vast COREUM off-road event venue, outside Frankfurt, Mercedes-Benz Trucks presented highlights into this current portfolio and more for applications in and around construction sites.

FLEETTRANSPORT | OCTOBER 26

The focus is on hands-on driving experiences featuring key technologies such as the Mechanical Power Take-off (ePTO), Turbo Retarder Clutch, Hydraulic Auxiliary Drive, as well as digital and service-oriented solutions. In addition, the event offered an opportunity to take a closer look at the new battery-electric Mercedes-Benz eArocs 400 in real life, real time conditions. ‘Journalists had the unique opportunity to test the vehicles themselves at several stations along a demanding off-road course on-site in order to learn more about the underlying technologies and application scenarios’ During the various presentations and exercises undertaken at the event, a series of workshops explained the new technology introduced in the new Mercedes-Benz Trucks range, covering both their internal combustion and battery electric vehicles. It has introduced a factory-integrated mechanical power take-off (mPTO) for its heavy-duty electric trucks, such as the eActros LS, (i.e. LWB 600) delivering up to 78 kW/300 Nm of mechanical power to run hydraulic systems for tippers, cranes, and municipal waste applications. As it is factory built, it replaces the need for complex custom

New Mercedes-Benz eArocs 400

conversions by external bodybuilders, and also provides more payload. For urban waste logistics operations, based on the M-cab eActros, a centre seat can be fitted. The system is also available for eArocs 400 LS tractor-units and rigids. For diesel trucks in the Actros and Arocs model series, the switchable hydraulic front-wheel drive system, Hydraulic Auxiliary Drive (HAD), significantly eases demanding tasks. The system operates at speeds of up to 30 km/h and provides the required level of additional traction to handle challenging gradients and situations, even on slippery surfaces. Compared with conventional all-wheel drive systems, HAD also offers advantages in terms of reduced fuel consumption and lower weight. Additional traction is available at the touch of a button: the Hydraulic Auxiliary Drive (HAD) supports the front axle with up to 450 bar of hydraulic pressure. A high-pressure pump mounted on the engine transfers this pressure and generates up to 40 kW of additional drive energy per front wheel. This allows

CONSTRUCTION | 17

slopes to be mastered effortlessly while ensuring that extra traction is available whenever it is needed. The turbo retarder clutch fluid coupling is another feature designed for tough conditions. As a combination of a hydraulic start-off clutch and a retarder within a single component, it enables smooth and precise manoeuvring, even under heavy loads and at extremely low speeds – all without wear and tear. Together with the High Performance Engine Brake, the turbo retarder clutch also delivers up to 750 kW of braking power and a braking torque of up to 3,000 Nm – again, completely wear-free. All of these systems were tried and tested on and around the site, with numerous steep hills and descents pushing the technology to perform where it did with great efficiency. Before any customer signs up to make the transition to electric, the Mercedes-Benz Trucks (MBT) technical and sales teams research and advise whether the vehicle is suitable for the requirements and operations of the potential new owner. Based on the company’s Energy Cost Calculator, the initial area for consideration is the average distance covered by the truck,

Mercedes-Benz SLT heavy-haul

the price of diesel versus electricity, the leasing package and necessary battery charging infrastructure. Within the construction industry, no two operations are the same, therefore body integration, axle and payload need reliable, durable implementation when it comes to electric versus diesel. On the infrastructure element, MBT provides a number of truck specific charger offerings, catering for overnight charging (50kW), and two levels of fast charging (200-400 kW), all of which can be part of a semi-public charging network, turning the depot into a new revenue stream. Other associate programmes available include a battery storage station using recycled battery packs (some reused from original BMW i3 models), a TruckCharge App, and TruckLive that features maintenance management, Service 24h Connected and Over-the-Air updates. weight ratings of 37 or 44 tonnes in an 8x4/4 axle layout across four distinct wheelbases. Mercedes-Benz claims it to be at least 50% more energy efficient than comparable diesel construction trucks.

The series of Workshop presentations, included a briefing on the MercedesBenz Arocs SLT, the flagship heavy duty multi-wheel truck built to pull extreme gross combination weights of up to 500 tonnes. It features a heavily reinforced frame, special suspension layouts, robust multi-axle configuration (such as 8x8), high-performance inline-six, Euro 6 diesel engines (up to 625 hp & 3,000 Nm of torque), and a specialised turbo retarder clutch for wear-free moving and braking under massive loads. 18 | SAFETY MATTERS

There’s no excuse for unsafe loads IS YOUR LOAD SECURE? Double check before you leave! Unsafe loads cause adverse incidents in the workplace and on the road. Every year loading, unloading and load shift incidents injure hundreds of people and cost businesses millions in damaged goods, damaged vehicles and lost work time. Why should loads be secured or restrained?

from vehicles and can cause road obstructions, traffic disruptions and collisions especially if drivers swerve to avoid fallen items n Certain vehicle spillages may cause other vehicles to skid and lose control n Unrestrained goods may crash into the vehicle cab during emergency braking n Loads which have shifted may have to be manually removed from the vehicle which may increase the risk of an injury or a fall from the vehicle n Items falling out of vehicles at delivery sites causing injury and/or property damage

Every item of cargo, regardless of its weight or size, has the potential to shift in transit. This requires that every item placed on a vehicle load bed should be stowed, secured and restrained so that it cannot move. Load restraint means preventing the movement of the load in any direction in relation to the vehicle load bed.

n Failure to secure a load properly can also result in financial losses from:

Apart from the human cost, think about the impact of failing to safely secure loads may have on every aspect of a business.

Safe loading procedures should be in place to ensure that loads do not exceed the rated load capacity of the vehicle. Procedures should also be in place to ensure that every vehicle is loaded safely, with the cooperation of parties involved. These procedures should be documented in a loading plan. The plan should clearly state the role of the driver in loading, securing and unloading operations. If the driver is not involved in loading a vehicle, he or she must remain at a safe location away from the activity.

n Drivers, vehicle occupants, other road users, pedestrians and anyone who may be involved in loading and unloading the vehicle could be injured or killed n Unrestrained loads or objects may move around on the load bed, changing the dynamics of the moving vehicle which can lead to a crash due to loss of control, jack-knife or rollover. n Unsecured loads or objects may fall FLEETTRANSPORT | OCTOBER 26

Damaged goods and vehicles Clean-up costs Worker absence through injury Damage to company reputation Increased insurance premiums.

Safe Loading procedures

The consignor should give the driver a signed copy of the loading plan detailing how the consignment

has been loaded, stowed and secured on the vehicle. If drivers are involved in loading or unloading, or checking the load in transit, they should sign the loading plan. Loading and unloading should only be carried out by trained authorised people. Where practicable, loading and unloading should be carried out in a designated area away from passing traffic, pedestrians and others not involved in loading or unloading vehicles. Where this is not practicable, risks to pedestrians and passing traffic must be minimised. Only trained, authorised persons should be permitted to access the loading area. Consigners, loaders, supervisors and drivers must ensure that the vehicle is suitable for load to be transported, and they should know the load capacity and configuration of the vehicle being used so that loading and unloading can be done correctly and safely. They must also make sure that vehicles are loaded in a manner so that they are safe for transport. Every item of cargo has the potential to shift in transit, so the load should be stowed, secured and/ or restrained so that it will not move. The load should be placed against the headboard if possible or, if there is a gap, an intermediate bulkhead should be fitted or blocking or dunnage used to fill the gap to prevent the load moving forward. The headboard should be strong enough to prevent the load from moving. Best practice suggests the strength of the superstructure should meet the requirements laid down in EN 12642 (L-XL). Loading and unloading should be carried out so that, as far as possible, the weight of the load is spread evenly across the vehicle or trailer at all times, to prevent instability. The load should be arranged and secured

SAFETY MATTERS | 19 in a manner that prevents sliding or toppling. Equipment used to restrain the load, such as bars, chains and lashing straps, must be in good condition and compatible with the vehicle. Additional measures will be required to secure a load which is to be transported by sea. When loading is complete, supervisors and those involved in the loading operation should check that the load is properly secured. Supervisors should give signed approval as part of the handover to the driver. Three-way co-operation between the consignor, the person in control of delivery site and the driver is essential to ensure that loads can be delivered or collected safely and efficiently. Drivers must familiarise themselves with loading and unloading procedures for their own and for customer or supplier premises. They should report to the person in charge of either site, for any relevant instructions, before loading and unloading the vehicle. Drivers and loaders should wear high-visibility clothing when they work around other moving vehicles, and vehicles should

be braked, stabilised and immobilised as appropriate, to prevent unsafe or unexpected movement during loading and unloading. How should loads be secured/ restrained? Advice on how to properly secure or restrain loads is readily available by visiting the Health and Safety Authority website https://www.hsa.ie/eng/ vehicles_at_work/transport_safety_ guidance_resources/load_securing/. This contains a wide variety of guidance material, publications and videos on the topic. If you are involved in any aspect of transporting cargo by road this is a great location to start your information finding process. There, among other things, you will find: 1. “International Guidelines on Safe Load Securing for Road Transport”, published by the IRU, provides basic practical information and instruction to all persons in the transport chain involved in loading/unloading and securing load on vehicles, including consignors, carriers and shippers.

2. A series of information sheets, developed jointly by An Garda Síochána, the Road Safety Authority and the Health and Safety Authority, dealing with specific load types such as Curtain-sided trailers, Plant and Machinery, Round Timber, Pre-cast Concrete, Structural Steel and Site Cabins. 3. “European Best Practice Guidelines on Cargo Securing for Road Transport”, published by the European Commission, are intended to support the application of rules as laid down in Directive 2014/47/ EU. These guidelines provide physical and technical background information as well as practical advice and instructions to all persons involved in loading/unloading and securing cargo on vehicles, including carriers and shippers. 4. There is also a link to other useful national and international load securing resources. All of this material is free to download, and is there to be used. So why not make good use of it?

MAN looks to the Future

MAN Truck & Bus, which under Traton Group ownership now employs 85,000 people at 1,000 locations around the world, is investing €300 million in elevating its commitment to improve its products and services throughout the network.

The Munich headquartered commercial vehicle manufacturer is focusing on improving partnerships with not only customers, but suppliers also, including bodybuilders. At a recent briefing leading up to the IAA Transportation exhibition, MAN Executives outlined three strategic priorities; Efficiency, Availability and Safety. At this event and at the Show in Hannover, MAN’s officials were keen to point out that they are continuing to be pursuing a multi-technology drivetrain strategy with the launch of a newer version of the D30 diesel engine, which will give a further 5% in fuel savings. Like other manufacturers, MAN feels that for many reasons, not least of all a lack of charging facilities for electric commercial vehicles, there will be a requirement for diesel engines for some time.

Production of this engine will be at the Nuremberg site and €220 million has been invested in this project which is a joint development within the TRATON Group. This technology will be shared by other sister brands such as the internal bus and coach division and Scania truck and buses. “This will be the final diesel engine developed” was the promise, obviously being confident that the charging network and general affordability of operating electric vehicles will be market ready in the next few years. Meanwhile, the new D30 engine will be available from 360 to 560 hp and will replace the D26 and D15 engines.

A Broad Range of Vehicles While attending the Pre-IAA briefing a ride and drive event was arranged, allowing journalists to experience the full range of the MAN electric range of trucks. It was emphasised that MAN has the most varied range of emission-free trucks in their line-up, namely the eTGX, eTGS, eTGM and eTGL. It was announced that the eTGX tractor-unit in 4x2 configuration will begin serial production in Poland next year and will have an average range of 570 km (depending on batteries). However, a more recent statement from the company declared that with six batteries that range distance would increase to 660 km and on the 6x2 with an extra battery, up to 720 km. This means that with these zero-emission commercials added to the fleet, it will give MAN an impressive line up from 12 to 50 tonnes. Away from the truck development, MAN is focusing on new technologies to improve safety and improve performance. In developing Efficient Cruise and Predictive Drive programs, these are designed to take into account the route profile, allowing

Although the plant is fully automated, there are 3,500 employees there, currently producing 50,000 batteries per year. This will soon be doubled, planned for with little disruption.

the truck to perform safely and efficiently. This will improve the operators’ profitability and reduce drivers’ work-loads.

10 Years of MAN TGE

MAN Truck & Bus is well positioned for the coming challenges that face all manufacturers, the biggest of which is uncertainty. Nobody is sure when road operators will start to make the switch to electric mode, in fact many are not sure themselves. While the high power charging network continues to remain well behind the curve, the types of operations suitable for electric use are limited. Costs are not tied down. During the test drives from Munich to Nuremberg, the convoy stopped at a public charging station. When the fast charge was completed, one of the questions asked was how much the battery reboot cost. Nobody knew until headquarters got the bill. We were assured afterwards that public charging is expensive. To be honest it smacked a bit of “three card trick” stroke. This part of the industry has a long way to go, with little sign of leadership from the EU or governments in general. There seems to be no clear tax strategy or plan to put this much needed heavy duty infrastructure in place. Text: Sean Murtagh – sean@fleet.ie

With almost 200,000 TGEs delivered since they were first launched at the IAA in 2016, the MAN badged variant of the Volkswagen Crafter light commercial range continues to gain market share, including an increasing presence in Ireland. It is available from 3.0 to 5.5 tonne GVW in panel van forms with various heights and lengths. The chassis and cab type can accommodate a variety of different body types. To mark the tenth anniversary, a special edition TGE van will be launched for each market featuring numerous extras. Over the decade a number of upgrades have been introduced into the TGE to improve driver comfort and safety. Around 10% of the sales are minibuses and campervans.

Battery Production at Nuremberg At the Nuremberg plant €100 million has been invested to transform the historical plant for future technology. While the production of diesel engines will continue at the site, it will be phased out in the coming decade. This plant located in Bavaria, Germany was first established in 1898; it started engine production in 1915, and by 1923 diesel injection technology www.fleet.ie

Trucks etc attract at IAA Transportation 2026 - Hannover Messe, Germany The IAA Transportation 2026 brought together leading commercial vehicle manufacturers and industry professionals from around the world. Many thousand visitors discovered the vision for the future of road transport and the technologies shaping the next generation of commercial vehicles.

BMC

Having manufactured over 300,000 vehicles and exported to more than 80 countries to date, BMC has contributed approximately 10 billion dollars in added value to the Turkish economy.

Cummins

ly for demanding commercial vehicle applications, including buses and trucks. The batteries are engineered to help customers meet operational requirements, while advancing their decarbonisation goals. The investment reflects a long-term commitment to the European market and supports the growing adoption of battery-electric commercial vehicles throughout the region.

DAF Trucks

One of Türkiye’s longest established and leading commercial and military vehicle manufacturers, BMC exhibited its PROCITY+ 12M EV and PROCITY 18M Diesel buses, while also launching the new 560-horsepower member of its PRO L truck family, the PRO L 1856, developed for international long-haul transportation. Combining the performance, driving comfort and durability offered by the PRO L 1852 with higher engine power, the PRO L 1856 is powered by a 12.9-litre Euro 6-E-compliant Cummins X13DT engine delivering 560 PS (412 kW) at 1,800 rpm. The vehicle comes equipped with a ZF 12 TX 2621 TD automated manual transmission supported by an Intarder. Featuring a high-roof, double-berth cab, the PRO L 1856 features a 10.4-inch touchscreen multimedia display and electro-hydraulic steering system. The Blind Spot Information System and Moving Off Information System (BSIS/ MOIS) enhance situational awareness and support driving safety.

Cummins announced plans to expand battery manufacturing in Europe, while highlighting a broad portfolio of technologies designed to give customers more choice as they navigate the evolving transportation landscape. “We’re seeing growing demand for battery-electric solutions in the European commercial vehicle market, and our customers are looking for partners who can help them scale with confidence,” said Amy Davis, President of Cummins owned Accelera and Components. “Manufacturing in Spain strengthens our ability to support customers locally, while positioning us for long-term growth in the region.” The Spain facility will produce the Advanced LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery platform, designed specifical-

The Dutch OEM attended IAA with one the largest stands and brought what could only be described as a comprehensive selection of its products. This included models for both the construction and cargo transport sectors, and comprised of diesel, HVO and BEV offerings, and a wide range of axle configurations on view. In addition a full team were available to provide information about the Paccar Connect and Paccar Power Solutions DAF trucks have always been popular with drivers and now the company offer the ‘single driver luxury package’ that compromises of a new 90cm wide bed www.fleet.ie

Approved, specifically for European road conditions, local charging networks, and fleet operations. Already it has made some headway sales wise, with DeepWay and the DHL Group signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the event to ‘explore automated battery-electric truck technologies and embodied AI in real-world logistics’. Also mentioned on stage was a multi-stage strategy scaling from on-board L2+ driving assistance features in 2027 toward advanced L4 autonomous road freight solutions.

DONGFENG

When playing on home turf, local teams should always shine - and shine Daimler Trucks did. The German giant had a particular reason to celebrate this year as the company marks the 130th anniversary of the invention of the truck by legendary founder Gottlieb Daimler. One of the trucks on stand was a fitting tribute vehicle to this early innovator. Other highlights on stand included the reveal of a new low-line battery electric eActros. Interestingly, in her address CEO of Daimler Trucks, Karen Radstrom noted the concerns of all OEMs about the possible imposition of fines for not meeting the emissions targets for 2030, and called for the problem to be revisited. Ms. Radstrom also highlighted that “even today only 2% of all commercial vehicles in Europe are BEV.”

Deepway

Ford Trucks The Chinese automotive giant, under the theme “With Dongfeng, Drive Hydrogen”, revealed three hydrogen-powered vehicles, alongside the world premiere of its 400-kW fuel cell system and a suite of key technologies. As a Global Zero-Carbon Value Partner, Dongfeng has almost 30 years of expertise in hydrogen energy development. To date, it has built a full-range fuel-cell stack portfolio spanning 20 kW to 400 kW, supporting passenger vehicles, light and heavy trucks and special-purpose vehicles. It has carried out commercial‑scale validation in over 40 cities across China, more than 10,000 vehicles in service.

FAW Trucks

Relatively new Chinese manufacturer DeepWay, established in 2020, made its European debut at the IAA with a series of smart, zero-emission heavy-duty electric trucks under the theme: “Drive Beyond Carbon”. As a preview to what’s due in 2027, the new DeepWay 3.0 heavy truck, is engineered and Whole Vehicle Type FLEETTRANSPORT | OCTOBER 26

technology developed in partnership with Pony.ai. It features a fully redundant drive-by-wire chassis equipped with 9 LiDAR sensors, 3 radars, and 13 cameras. Also featured on the outside stand was its Battery-Swapping Technology, which GAC demonstrated efficient battery-swapping configurations for the T9 platform, developed alongside its ecosystem partner Aulton. At its equally impressive indoor display adjacent was a selection of light commercials, see Fleet Van & Utility review in this issue.

trailer manufacturer Schmitz Cargobull have signed a multi-year agreement on original tyre equipment for trailers. The partnership will run until June 2030 and cover a wide range of trailer tyres

Geely Farizon

Foton Motor is one of the largest manufacturers of commercial vehicles in China and has already made an impact in Europe being present in 20 markets on this continent. Currently, to back up its product line on sale and sold, more than 300 service points are located throughout Europe and plan to open a manufacturing plant here in the next 18 months. It manufactures a full range of commercials, trucks, vans, pick-ups and buses, with 50% from the production line being electric or hybrid. Significant investment in R&D is ongoing annually. Details of its Van line and pick-ups on display are featured in the Fleet Van & Utility supplement.

GAC

In promoting the theme “Delivering the Future Together,” GAC Commercial Vehicle, yet another Chinese brand, was on the same wavelength as many other exhibitors - creating a new ecosystem of heavy-duty electric trucks, autonomous platforms, and light commercial vehicles. Among the key highlights included the T9 Robotruck: Built on GAC’s T9 battery-electric heavy-duty truck platform, this model integrates fourth-generation Level 4 (L4) autonomous driving

It was interesting the Geely name associated with its commercial vehicle brand at the event. It’s a form of education that Farizon is part of the Chinese Groups list of associated automotive brands such as Volvo cars, Polestar, Lotus and Proton. Here Farizon with an outdoor display, officially debuted its full-line, all-electric commercial vehicle range, designed to target both long-distance logistics and last-mile urban operations across Europe. Parked alongside the SV and V7E light commercials was a first example of the Farizon Homtruck, its flagship, zero-emission, Heavy-Duty truck. Said to be fitted with a 600-kWh battery capable of delivering a driving range of over 500 km on a single charge, Homtruck is manufactured on Geely Farizon’s dedicated all-electric intelligent architecture. To support these vehicles, Geely Farizon has established headquarters in Germany and France, building out a distribution network spanning 28 European nations. Fleet operations are backed by a central parts warehouse in Gaggenau, Germany, guaranteeing component delivery across Europe within 1 to 6 working days.

Hankook Two major developments from the Korean tyre brand. The big news was that Hankook and Europe’s leading

from Hankook, including the Smart Line long-distance series, Smart Flex tyres for regional and local distribution transport and Smart Work tyres for off-road construction site use. From its new manufacturing plant in Hungary, Hankook has expanded its Smart Flex range for regional-distance transport, adding a highly engineered trailer tyre to the Smart Flex AH51 for the steering axle and Smart Flex DH51 for the drive axle. Compared with its predecessor, the new tyre is optimised for high mileage and low rolling resistance. A key feature of the tyre is its tread design with hidden grooves. Manufactured using 3D-printed tread moulds, it is engineered to maintain performance. Specifically, this technology enables Hankook to maintain the high mileage and grip characteristics of the tyre over its entire life.

MAN Truck

Another German brand MAN Truck & Bus chose its National trade show to reveal the latest product line resulting from many years of research and development in the area of BEV and alternative fuels. There was a great reaction from the audience when the covers were removed to reveal the latest model, eTGX 26.600, in its attractive blue livery. The Munich headquartered company has chosen the emission-free electric www.fleet.ie

Also on stand was an interesting TGX 60.540 - A heavy duty tipper with five axles and Miller Kipper body that is legally plated in many countries for 60 tonnes (Maximum Authorised Mass).

Michelin

The French tyre company revealed NAZCA, an automated regrooving system that’s in line with manufacturers’ recommendations with the goal of high quality, reliability and repeatability. While regrooving is a long-established part of truck, bus, and coach tyre maintenance, the process has remained manual to this day – making it time-consuming and dependent on the skills of individual technicians. The retreading machine was developed by Michelin engineers and, thanks to a high-resolution laser scanner and advanced algorithms, can measure tyres, model deformation and wear patterns, and continuously control the cutting depth. Since the geometry of each tyre is unique, the system adjusts the cutting depth across the entire width and circumference of the tyre in real time. This ensures that the tyre’s potential is fully utilised down to the very last millimetre, ensuring operators safely maximise the working life of every tyre and helping them lower the total cost of ownership. NAZCA was tested in real-world conditions for over a year and can increase the number of regrooving operations completed by workshops. According to Michelin, it could boost regrooving capacity by 30% to 50%, depending on the workshop’s operating conditions.

Renault Trucks Although the launch of four improved and updated electric vehicles on stand was the big news from Renault Trucks, like most manufactures, diesel is FLEETTRANSPORT | OCTOBER 26

still on the agenda. Featured were two electric tractor units - T780 E-Tech and T540 E-Tech offering ranges of 680km and 450km respectively. A D-series urban truck with a range of 414km and the International Van of the Year (IVOTY) award-winning electric Master E-Tech van, which caters for last mile deliveries was parked nearby. In between, was the first version of the Renault Trucks Red Edition Trafic E-Tech, newly crowned IVOTY 2027. Also there was also an updated diesel engine called the DE 13 R achieving a 4% improvement in fuel consumption.

Sany Putzmeister

It is now 10 years since the launch of Scania’s ‘Next Generation’ cab and the anniversary was marked with the reveal of the Scania Dynamic. The updates to the much beloved model include improved aerodynamics delivering a possible 4% fuel saving. There are also many updates to the interior the new ‘Dynamic’ which now comes with a reclining bed, and an uprated infotainment system. With new door handles, and a revised grille, the styling updates are completed with the addition of mirror cameras now located above the doors. Naturally as a leader in the research and development of alternative fuelled vehicles the new Scania Dynamic is available with either BEV or ICE with the latter powered by diesel, HVO or gas.

Sinotruk

While the Sany Group is possibly better known for excavators and heavy construction equipment, the Chinese company recently took control of the highly regarded concrete pumping entity Putzmeister, based in Germany. Fleet recently tested and reviewed its range of 8x4 construction trucks and was suitable impressed. At IAA Sany took the opportunity to reveal a new 4x2 BEV tractor-unit with a view to taking on the on major European OEMs with a unit that has been well tried and well tested with Chinese operators. In addition to a 4x4 tractor-unit, Sany also revealed a 4x2 distribution truck both of these models, which strongly indicates the company’s intentions. From Fleet’s experience driving Sany’s construction range, its tractor unit and 4x2 rigid both supported through the Putzmeister network, will be trucks to be reckoned with.

Sinotruk is no stranger to Ireland, with a good number of its multi-axle rigid trucks sold in the past, and now the Chinese brand is returning, in force. The Harris Group has re-ignited the franchise and has already started distribution in the UK, with importation due start in Ireland next year. At the IAA, Sinotruk launched a new battery electric 4x2 tractor-unit, an 8x4 BEV tipper, and a 6x2 BEV rigid, which will be sold under the name Sitrak. For the Irish market Harris Auto will start with electric powered medium-size trucks, scaling up to heavy duty and diesel models. In addition to complete vehicle products, Sinotruk will

Skyworth Auto

The commercial vehicle brand of Skywell Group, which has made its way into the Irish market with cars, promoted five next-generation electric and intelligent vehicles. Its core selection on stand included the Skyworth Hongtu X an Intelligent Range-Extended Chassis Cab and the Z9 - Level 4 Autonomous Heavy Truck, the centre of attraction making its global premiere. It’s a 6x4 battery-electric heavy tractor unit equipped with 5 LiDARs, 5 millimetre-wave radars, and 10 HD cameras providing a 360° perception system for Level 4 automated driving. It features a 400 kWh LFP battery and a 610 kW dual-motor output. The G18 is L4 Autonomous Refuse Compactor, full electric compression refuse truck purpose-built for municipal waste management and automated urban sanitation. The Urban Elf Robobus autonomous electric shuttle bus is built for low-speed passenger transport in controlled environments like campuses, airports, and private communities, while the Hongtu V9 electric light commercial van joins an ever growing list of urban delivery vehicles arriving into the market from China. On the opening days of the exhibition, Skyworth Auto/Skywell declared that more than 1,000-vehicle purchase orders and partnerships spanning Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Central Asia.

Super Panther Possibly a new name to many people, Super Panther is a Chinese brand that is developed and built in association with the Steyr Automotive company of Austria. This joint venture has produced a quality truck that, if the figures are to be believed will perform very well for a vast number of operators. It’s battery electric e-Topas 600 is

certainly a good looking tractor, and comes with a styling that will appeal to many, and judging by the crowds that surrounded the stand throughout the event that appeal was definitely confirmed. It should also be noted that the build quality, materials and finish both inside and out is highly commendable. While the Super Panther name may be new the association with the historic name of Steyr does bring a particular level credibility.

TESLA

Of course, congratulations must go to Volvo Truck’s Electric range crowned International Truck of the Year the IAA’s Night of the Stars event - and deservedly so. Volvo Trucks has furthered the benchmark for BEVs by delivering a heavy duty truck with a possible range of up to 700 kms. Nevertheless, the Swedish manufacturer has not rested on its laurels and attended the Hannover event with a number of electric and two hydrogen trucks. These were not just to be shown on stand, all the trucks including the hydrogen units they were available at the ride and drive session in a designated area and route outside. Another unit that created received a great deal of attention was of course the latest bonneted Volvo VNL on sale in North America.

ZF

There was plenty of interest in the Tesla Semi all-electric tractor-unit as it silently glided around the pathways of the Messe compound. Test rides were provided to the press, which had to be conducted in an orderly queue, due to the high demand! Up to 550 km is achievable on a single charge at a 40-tonne gross combination weight and its hi-tech system supports up to 800 kW charging power, recovering about 60% of range distance in 30 minutes. First orders will be delivered in Germany, France and the Netherlands in the first quarter of next year, expanding to other countries by the end of 2027. The US brand plans to enter the Irish and UK markets also. Because the driver sits mid cab, there is no difference between RHD and LHD in the interior design and fit out. Like the car sales programme, there will be no dealer network, and the trucks will be bought in a similar way on line, and the powers at be are confident that this method will work.

Strategists at ZF at its German HQ have stated that the big challenge for their company into the future is that a dual approach will be required in the next decade to facilitate the development of electric vehicles and the continuation of diesel power. The age-old company, formed over a hundred years ago has focused on the development of an eaxle and a hybrid transmission, which was recognised by the IToY Truck Innovation Award 2027 jury. One of the requirements of the new Euro 7 emission regulations will be some standards around brakes and tyres, and ZF presented a new brake caliper and the associated fixings that will meet these standards. MUTEC Keeping Ireland’s Mercedes-Benz Trucks & Vans Moving Through Innovation

As featured in a recent edition of Fleet Transport, MUTEC, the Naas Road, Dublin based MercedesBenz Commercial Vehicle dealership is marking thirty years in business with a substantial investment in new facilities and services for its customers. Now open and fully operational is the newly constructed, fully equipped, two bay Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Test Centre, while behind the scenes a new telematics and connectivity programme has been implemented, the first of its type for any Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicle dealership in Ireland. It’s described as a game changer regarding every aspect of a Mercedes-Benz truck or van, ensuring vehicles remain functional with the aid of preventive and predictive maintenance.

Gary Green, Managing Director at MUTEC, explained to Fleet Transport how the new programmes work through an on-screen demonstration in his office, highlighting MUTEC’s objectives to offer customers a top class service and experience with the ‘Star’ brand, which, incidentally, celebrates its 130th anniversary in 2026. “At MUTEC, we understand that the demands placed on commercial vehicle operators are constantly evolving. I want MUTEC to be driving the future of Customer Service with Mercedes-Benz Digital Innovation. That is why we continue to invest in the latest digital technologies and intelligent service solutions that deliver greater efficiency, reduced vehicle downtime, and an enhanced ownership experience for Mercedes-Benz Truck and Van customers.

FLEETTRANSPORT | OCTOBER 26

As part of our ongoing commitment to innovation, we have fully integrated the Mercedes-Benz XENTRY ecosystem with our Dealer Management System (DMS), creating a seamless digital customer journey from the moment a service appointment is booked through to workshop completion and ongoing vehicle support. The XENTRY platform delivers its greatest capabilities when connected to a vehicle through a free ‘Mercedes-me’ digital ecosystem account, linked to both the customer and vehicle. Once connected, the vehicle can securely transmit valuable diagnostic and service information directly to our team. This

PROFILE | 41 proactive approach allows us to assess vehicle requirements in advance, ensuring that the correct service procedures, technical information, and resources are available before the vehicle even arrives at our workshop. In many cases, the vehicle effectively tells us what it needs, enabling a smarter, faster, and more efficient service experience. One of the most powerful benefits of vehicle connectivity is remote diagnostics. If a driver experiences a dashboard warning message, our Service Advisors can often access relevant diagnostic information remotely and provide informed guidance immediately. This can help eliminate unnecessary workshop visits, reduce downtime, and keep customers moving. The full integration between XENTRY and our DMS also provides our teams with real-time visibility of parts availability, allowing us to identify required components in advance and significantly improve workshop efficiency. This means better preparation, faster turnaround times, and a more streamlined experience for our customers. To further enhance transparency and convenience, we have implemented a fully digital check-in and customer communication platform. This enables our team to provide vehicle health reports, quotations, and electronic repair authorisations directly to customers, ensuring complete visibility of recommended work before any repairs are undertaken. By removing paperwork and improving communication, customers can make informed decisions quickly and confidently, with no unexpected surprises when invoicing is completed. In addition, our new Customer Dialogue system delivers automated progress updates throughout the repair process, keeping customers informed every step of the way. From vehicle check-in to workshop completion, customers have greater visibility, greater control, and greater peace of mind. We are proud to be the first Mercedes-Benz Truck and Van Centre to introduce this fully integrated digital service experience for our customers. This investment represents another important milestone in the next chapter of the MUTEC story, reflecting our commitment to delivering industry-leading service, innovative technology, and exceptional customer support.” ‘For Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicle operators, the future of servicing is connected, proactive, transparent, and designed to maximise vehicle uptime’ In conclusion Gary advised: “To learn more about our digital customer experience and connected vehicle services, please contact our Service Team at service@mutec.ie” Within MUTEC there is a team of 38 staff which has accumulated over 350 years’ service to the company. Its longest serving employee, a technician who has given 35 years of diligent service (but wishes to remain anonymous), was employed initially by Truck & Trailer Services, the precursor to MUTEC. An on-site BBQ held recently paid tribute to these long serving members and marked the milestone three decades in the trade. www.fleet.ie

IRHA President Ger Hyland, in a clear message to Government said any increased fuel charges would be passed on to consumers. He reminded the Government that 32% of turnover from hauliers went back to the Exchequer in various taxes. He thanked the Ministers and officials for the help already received but said more needed to be done regarding reducing costs. He pointed

out the increasing charges from the Road Safety Authority (RSA), increased tolls and the inefficient method used to

collect them and promised support for any climate change initiatives, but that the Government would have to row in accordingly. While addressing delegates on Saturday night, Minister O’ Brien praised the work and importance of the Irish road haulage sector, saying that it was an essential part of the success of the economy. He praised the President and the management team, stating that they brought solutions to the table, not problems. At the Annual General Meeting held earlier that day, there were detailed reports for members on the progress the Association was making on different policies. Paul Jackman and Dan Wolfe jointly presented a comprehensive report on how the Association is progressing with its lobbying in Europe, for example. When he concluded his address to the members, Ger Hyland thanked everybody, his management team, the members and his family, “It’s been a tough year, and it looks like next year will be tougher still,” he concluded. www.fleet.ie

From where I’m siting – Howard Knott

Perhaps the Vikings got it right about South-East ports Several things got me thinking about this one. First off, it’s clear from every new set of figures emerging from the Irish Maritime Development Office (IMDO) and other sources that the relentless increase in trade volumes shipping through Irish ports is not likely to come to an end any day soon. Not only is the Irish population continuing to grow, but that growth is being driven by the numbers of people being sucked in to meet job needs in expanding businesses. Most of these arrivals are also bringing with them skills that are not otherwise available here, while of course more people require the provision of additional housing, food and the other essentials for living. Dublin Port is struggling to cope with the increase in volumes being shipped through it. In the second quarter of 2026 the number of Ro-Ro units passing through the port was over a quarter of a million, representing a 6% increase over the second quarter of 2025 volumes. The volumes of Lo-Lo containers also passed the quarter of a million mark, up by 2% on the year before, if not quite matching the growth of earlier years. Can the pressure be taken off Dublin to speed up the distribution of goods to the final customers, while additionally releasing those containers for use in meet the surging export needs of a growing Irish economy? Do the ports of the south-east coast provide at least some of the answers? We have all seen huge success in Rosslare where the pre-existing services linking there with Wales have continued, but there has also been a post-Brexit expansion in direct services to the continent. It is no longer the case that all ferry services must go through Dublin FLEETTRANSPORT | OCTOBER 26

when the level of port activity levels in Rosslare is making the addition of new services quite simple and attractive to hauliers and cargo owners. With almost fifty services to and from the Continent each week, Rosslare now has the critical mass to attract even more business especially considering the Port infrastructure development currently being undertaken by the Port operators Iarnród Éireann will allow for greater capacity. Rosslare has ambitions to be a lot more than just a ferry port and plans to have major facilities in place to become what it envisages would be Ireland’s main service port for the off-shore wind and other energy generation industries. These facilities are also being designed to enable the development, perhaps in ten or fifteen years’ time, of Lo-Lo port facilities with a re-developed rail link from the port to Waterford and elsewhere in Ireland. Mention of Waterford brings me to the specific item that prompted me to think more about the potential for ports in the South-East to take on facilitating a greater share of Ireland’s maritime trading activity. I was on a walking tour of the city and looking at the replica Viking Ship located beside Reginald’s Tower when the guide spoke about the fact that Waterford was established by the Vikings in 914 to be not only Ireland’s first city but their chosen international trading hub. It was, he said, in the right place

from which to trade with Britain and Europe. This same thinking led the founders of Bell Lines to establish their business in Waterford, an activity with a range of services that transformed the way in which Irish businesses were able to trade far and wide. Bell Lines, like so many

pioneering businesses, did not survive, through their reputation as a first-class service operator still lives on. For several years Samskip was the only Lo-Lo line operating through Waterford, but 2026 has been a year of significant developments. At the end of April Eucon introduced a twice weekly vessel call and in July WEC Line brought in the first weekly calls of its new “Waterford Express” service. With five container vessel calls each week, Waterford is now reaching the point where it becomes an attractive operating base for hauliers, forwarders and others who could introduce new rail freight services exploiting Irish Rail’s new wagon fleet and new rail paths to North Kerry, Mayo etc., replicating the Bell Line Rail grid. Yes, the future is looking bright for logistics in the South-East. Text: Howard Knott – contributor@fleet.ie

What are the Benefits of a Five Year Business Plan?

Seasoned seafarers will steer a path to success. It’s a proven fact that businesses that have a clear five year plan are more successful, whether this is directly because of the plan or just the fact that well organised businesses will have a clear strategy and a means to adjust and gain from prevailing winds. Here are a few elements to consider on step-stoning the path ahead. Outline Current Position Sit down and review strengths and weaknesses of the business, How over a longer period will It gain more from these strengths? Or how can a niche be created from these strengths and gain economies of scale in the sector operated in? Are scarce resources used to their maximum benefit and is the current sector a long term proposition? Many Irish transport firms operate at a high level in food, pharma and technology that is the envy of much larger UK and European Logistics giants, and this specialisation and work ethic result in margins multiple times the EU norm. With regards to identified weaknesses, can these be addressed over a longer period? Can upskilling of current people or using external resources be considered to address the issue? Is there a clear path of training and development of key people in the business? Why Businesses Do Not Plan The main reason why businesses don’t implement business plans is that if there is a plan on paper with targets such as the doubling of the turnover or

FLEETTRANSPORT | OCTOBER 26

trebling the profit, if that is not achieved it’s deemed a failure. Alternatively if there is a plan is to exit the business in five years then that effectively is the beginning of the end. If factors such as workload and stress decrease (as they should with proper planning and control) and margins increase is it due to a plan when in reality key issues may have changed? Why Businesses should Plan Most of asset finance is over a five year term or longer. If constructing a commercial building it’s a fifteen year repayment term so of course the business should have a long term plan. Business people may change over that period, even the Managing Director, external and internal factors may change, but that’s why ultimate goals and targets should be set out and reviewed annually. Plans normally are financially based outlining turnover, profit and liquidity but they can also be aspirational in becoming best operator in sector, achieving operational excellence in compliance standards, or having the ability to be self managed and self motivated. How can Planning Benefit Business Having a clear financial plan covering five years (provided it is properly prepared and well researched) will provide a motivator to all in the business to improve and develop. Accountants see this in bottom line success, while business people also see time invested in proper organisation and development offering real benefits to their business

such as reduced operating costs for the long term, or increased value if they were to sell. With a five year plan assess the ongoing value of current spend on capital items such as yard, building and office investments. Planning ahead allows a business to assess risk and quantify what benefits can be gained from the business. Sometimes a long term plan may result in fundamental changes in the current business as the ability to achieve objectives is accessed. Most business people have pension plans and tax plans but don’t spend time on the most important document which is the core business plan. Next Step Ascertain projected profit and loss and cash flows for 2026 and expand this out over a further four years. Like an Olympian know the goals and work towards them while all the time monitoring the external environment and the business internal issues. As already noted, most Irish transport firms are family owned, therefore there may be family members joining and leaving, as priorities in the family may change. With regards to external factors, key customers may come and go but continue developing the business. Business is like sport, it’s not the taking part that matters but the winning. Big winners in Irish transport plan to win, they have a road map, a current position and a destination. Where will your business be in five years time? Set out the goals now! 2026 IRHA AGM & Conference – Successfully Confident

If one word could sum up the mood at the recent Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA) AGM & Conference held in Killarney, it would be confidence. I say that in a respectful way, having attended the event and many others over the years. The general air around the Gleneagle Hotel was one of confidence, not arrogance. While the industry continues to be challenged and no doubt will face difficult times before the next AGM convenes again, the IRHA President, Ger Hyland and his management team have confidence in their collective ability to deal with what they are facing. During the AGM Ger Hyland listed the achievements of the management team in the past year, but also pointed out the uncertainty that lies ahead. His confidence comes from the fact that the Government has been involved in meaningful discussions since the price of a barrel of oil went to a cost level that was never anticipated. Suppliers to the industry are also confident, confident in the work that the IRHA and its members undertake every day. Outside the hotel complex FLEETTRANSPORT | OCTOBER 26

there were over forty new trucks and trailers ready to go into service. Whatever challenges wider industry faces, they will not be for the want of transport. While operators see difficulties in the future, they are obviously prepared to invest in their businesses. Truck and trailer dealers are reporting a good year also, with forward orders looking good. Inside, the trade stands were also reporting positively. All were confident that, although the world has not been as settled as in the past, common sense will prevail and that no group will push the self-destruct button. This is a marked improvement from where many felt the sector was last year. So, what has changed? Are we just punch drunk as we stagger from one crisis to another? Our economy had just recovered from the financial crisis when we were hit by Brexit. A seemingly nonsensical decision by the electorate of our nearest neighbours to move away from the security of Europe, on a promise from politicians to improve the economy. It’s proved to be a real slow burner, with little or no advantages from leaving the EU yet to be seen. Then Covid-19 arrived, presenting huge operational challenges and nervousness, until it settled into something of normal routine. Soon after that, the crisis in Ukraine, accompanied by spiralling fuel costs and more recently, President Trump’s invasion or attack on Iran. Fuel prices have rocketed further and we are now still dealing with that problem. There has been one constant in all of this, the IRHA. It has been around to help

represent its members with government and all of its agencies, lobbying successfully for fuel rebate systems, assistance and legislation when required. The association is constantly working. Some issues are tedious and take constant and long-term commitment, others like the events in Holyhead some years ago require an immediate and swift response. One area that requires a continuous presence on the part of Irish hauliers is what is happening in Europe. All regulation emanates from there and while it is difficult to stop some of these legislators, it is important to have a say in the formulation of new rules. In that regard, Dan Wolfe was appointed by the association some years ago as an advocate for Irish hauliers in Europe. He works very closely with Management team member Paul Jackman in continuing a very important agenda. At this year’s AGM, members were given updates on driver training, road worthiness validity, changes in rules around ferry trips and much more. Ger Hyland has every right to be confident on behalf of his members. He represents an important sector in the economy. During the fuel negotiations recently, he was the most vocal of all trade representatives, held his nerve, never flinched and was honourable in all his dealings. The elected representatives recognise and respect that. No fewer than nine of them attended the weekend events, including two government ministers, an MEP and senator. Ger Hyland and the IRHA are turning their wheels. Text: Sean Murtagh - sean@fleet.ie

New passport requirement on Ferries for motorists travelling between ROI & Britain From Monday, 28 September 2026, all passengers travelling with Irish Ferries between the Republic of Ireland and Britain will be required to carry a valid passport. This is a change to the current ID accepted and means that from 28 September, no other forms of photo ID will be accepted by Irish Ferries for any passengers, including Irish and UK citizens. This is to ensure compliance with UK Border Force requirements relating to the accuracy and integrity of passenger data before boarding and aligns ferry travel requirements with the document checks already carried out by many airlines.

Irish Ferries is encouraging Irish and UK citizens travelling or planning to travel after 28 September 2026 to check that they have a valid, in-date passport (or Irish passport card) before arriving at the port to avoid delays or disruption to their journey. Irish Ferries operates two routes between the Republic of Ireland and Britain: Dublin - Holyhead - Dublin Rosslare - Pembroke - Rosslare All passengers travelling with Irish Ferries should check entry requirements before departure as in addition to a passport, a visa and/or Electronic Travel

Authorisation (ETA) may be required Stena Line has issued similar advice: Ferry passengers travelling between Holyhead and Dublin or Fishguard and Rosslare will now need to show their passport on departure. All passengers will be required to show their passport or passport card, regardless of age or nationality. Customers with existing bookings are currently being notified by the Customer Service Team to ensure customers are fully supported during this change of operations. There is no change to the ID requirements for business or leisure passengers travelling with Stena Line from Belfast, Liverpool, Cairnryan or Heysham.

This move aims to enhance supply chain responsiveness and support Columbia’s growing market in the region. A.P. Moller - Maersk (Maersk) has signed a new agreement with Columbia Sportswear Company (Columbia), a global leader in outdoor, active and lifestyle products, to provide warehousing and distribution services for its Pick & Pack operations in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Under the agreement, Maersk will operate Columbia’s UK and Ireland FLEETTRANSPORT | OCTOBER 26

Pick & Pack business from its existing multi-customer facility in Tamworth near Birmingham, UK. The new setup will replace Columbia’s current distribution setup serving the market from Cambrai, France, enabling a more localised and responsive supply chain for the UK&I region. The Tamworth operation will support a broad product portfolio including footwear, apparel, accessories and equipment, and will serve all sales channels – retail, wholesale and e-commerce. The operation begins with initial volumes of approximately 1.6 million

inbound and outbound units annually. This facility will fulfil all channels e‑commerce, retail, and wholesale - and provide a full suite of value‑added services, supported by an inventory of roughly 25,000 SKUs (stock keeping units), and sufficient space to store inventory across multiple fulfilment streams. The new setup builds on the long-standing collaboration between Maersk and Columbia Sportswear, further strengthening the companies’ shared ambition to simplify and optimise global supply chains through integrated, end-to-end logistics solutions. Fourth Generation Renault Trafic E-Tech wins 35th International Van of the Year Award 2027 By a unanimous vote, the all-new next-generation Renault Trafic E-Tech electric was elected winner of the International Van of the Year 2027 (IVOTY). The announcement and presentation of the most prestigious trophy in the light commercial vehicle industry, now in its 35th year, was made at the ‘Night of the Stars’ gala ceremony at the IAA Transport trade fair at the Hannover Messe, Germany, on Monday 14 September.

The new Trafic received top marks from each member of the 26-strong International Van of the Year jury, with the Stellantis Pro One Compact van chosen as runner-up, with two brands uniquely sharing the third position, FLEETVAN&UTILITY | AUTUMN 26

namely the new Farizon V7E and latest Volkswagen Caddy Cargo. The other shortlisted candidates were Hyundai Staria Electric and Maxus Deliver 7. The expert judging panel, consisting of commercial vehicle trade magazine editors and journalists spanning Europe and South Africa were impressed with the arrival of the new fourth-generation mid-size Renault Trafic E-Tech. Following the prize giving ceremony, Jarlath Sweeney, Chairman IVOTY said: Congratulations to Renault Vans on winning the 2027 IVOTY with the new Trafic E-Tech electric. It’s the sixth such title for Renault, and exactly twenty-five years since the Trafic was last victorious. Previous winners for the French brand was the Trafic (2002), the Master (1998 & 2025) and Kangoo (2022 & 2012). The main criterion for the nomination and the election of any van as International Van of the Year is its contribution to high standards of efficiency, safety, with respect to environment and the sustainability of the transport of light goods by road and the new Trafic E-Tech electric meets these requirements with aplomb.”

He added: “The main criterion for the nomination and the election of any van as International Van of the Year is its contribution to high standards of efficiency, safety, with respect to environment and the sustainability of the transport of light goods by road and the new Trafic E-Tech electric meets these requirements with aplomb.” On receiving the IVOTY trophy on stage, Jan Ptacek, VP, Head of Renault Light Commercial Vehicles, said: “This prestigious International Van of the Year award is a strong recognition of the outstanding work and commitment of all the teams involved in the Trafic E-Tech electric project. With software-defined vehicle platform features, 800-volt architecture and ultra-rapid DC charging, Trafic E-Tech electric is a game changer in the European LCV market bringing strong customer value: reduced daily operating costs, pleasure to drive, agility in the cities and on demand up-gradability. This award is also a strong symbol of the positive dynamic of Renault LCV business.”

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Transforming ahead

There was a touch of futuristic nostalgia about Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’s Brand Briefing Event, held recently at the former AEG factory in Berlin. The event venue located in the heart of industrial East Berlin dating back to the 1920s, when it was AEG’s main electrical transformer manufacturing facility. Aptly, electrification was one of the main themes from the VWCV gathering, arranged to highlight the brand’s many premières planned for the IAA Transportation trade show in Hannover. Other interesting topics included autonomous vehicles, digital services and connectivity, as well as special adaptions for various sectors such as tradespeople, military and leisure purists. A broad selection of vehicles were parked strategically with presentations under seven themes, such as: Commercial Vehicles, Special Conversions, Future, Camping, Family/ Leisure and Electrification. “At Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, we focus our products, services and digital solutions on avoiding downtimes, reducing complexity and simplifying the operation of vehicles and fleets,” explained Stefan Mecha, CEO of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. “Our motto is: ‘Your time counts. Our vehicles remain our core focus. They are, however, increasingly becoming part of a connected B 2B mobility ecosystem. At the heart of this ecosystem is Connect Pro – our new digital fleet solution for professional customers. Connect Pro helps customers manage their vehicles more efficiently, monitor vehicle status and maintenance needs in near real time, schedule service appointments, activate over-the-air updates for electric vehicles, FLEETVAN&UTILITY | AUTUMN 26

and keep their fleets ready for operation. At the same time, the long-established DNA of the brand remains our guiding principle: solutions at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will continue to start with the question of whether and how they can improve the working world and everyday life”, A number of areas of application were detailed featuring examples of VWCV products: Commercial vehicles for Construction professionals: Highlighted were current models providing mobility for the working world. They conclude a Caddy Cargo Maxi (Plug-in) eHybrid with Sortimo shelving, a Transporter with a Scatollini dropside/platform body and a Crafter with a Schoon-Kipper three-way tipper. Special conversions: the ID. Buzz has established itself with the fire service and police departments. The future: MOIA, Mobileye and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles have developed the ID. Buzz AD, a Level 4 autonomous vehicle for mobility providers.

into the defense market. It is marketed alongside its pick-up sibling, the Amarok based MV. Powering the unit is a modified dual-fuel 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine generating 130 kW (177 hp) and mated to a heavy-duty 6-speed automatic transmission. Blazoned in traditional army colours it’s engineered to run smoothly on NATO-standard F34 Jet-Fuel (Kerosene) alongside commercial diesel. Built-in mechanical overrides bypass standard electronic limiters. Designed as a ‘Modular Mission Vehicle’, it features a low-profile exterior built without standard Volkswagen branding. Inside, it features mobile command, control, and communications (C3) suites, and is adaptable for Field medical evacuation and ICU logistics and Armoured troop transport. This version marks first VWCV’s return to heavy-duty security and military vehicles in decades, answering the broader European call for domestic defence procurement solutions. California goes for a Cruise with ID.Buzz

Campervanning: Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is the only automotive manufacturer in Europe that builds its entire family of camper vans – the California range – fully in-house. Family and leisure: with the Caddy, Multivan, ID. Buzz and Amarok, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles offers one of the largest ranges of the most versatile family and leisure models. All-electric: the all-electric Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles range today consists of the ID. Buzz, ID. Buzz Cargo, e-Transporter and e-Caravelle. Crafter command vehicle for defence purposes Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has developed a dedicated tactical military variant of the Crafter 4-Motion van under the regulation designation MV.2. Developed under strict secrecy by VW engineers at the Osnabrück plant and unveiled at the Enforce Tac Defence exhibition in Nuremberg, the MV.2 represents Volkswagen’s tactical pivot

Ever since its debut in 1988, the Volkswagen California has stood for compact campervan travel, excellent everyday usability and maximum practicality. Across several generations, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has repeatedly reinterpreted the California concept, from the classic campervan with a pop-up roof to particularly basic, yet flexible Beach variants. Historically the Californias were built on the Transporter panel van chassis, but the most recent variant is now based on the slightly larger Multivan model. The launch of the new ID. California Cruise expands the versatility further as this first all-electric

COVER | 61 California is based on the ID. Buzz LWB. For weekends away and longer road trips, the ID.California Cruise features specially developed camping equipment, in collaboration with innovation partners German start-up Stuff Bubble. Inside it offers sleeping accommodation for two people, with an inflatable bed measuring 2.03 metres long and 1.20 metres wide, plus a new inflatable and portable kitchen concept. The exclusive sleeping system also includes a newly developed nine-centimetre-thick folding comfort mattress, designed to provide a particularly comfortable night’s sleep while travelling.

“This partnership gives us the opportunity to rethink the campervan,” added Stefan. “Together with Stuff Bubble, we are exploring how modern lightweight technologies and modular concepts can be transferred to the California. To achieve this, we are deliberately drawing inspiration from other fields, such as kite sports, paragliding and inflatable tube constructions that have become standard in the world of modern tents. Our strategic approach is to free the classic campervan from heavy materials and rigid installations, replacing them with flexible, modular solutions. This creates genuine camping capability without compromising the everyday practicality of the base vehicle. In particular, it appeals to customers who do not want a permanently fitted interior but still want to enjoy the comforts of camping on spontaneous getaways, festival weekends or outdoor adventures.” Estimated pricing of the low weight double bed mattress is at €1,800 with the double kitchen boxes at €2,200. Both items can be easily inflated and deflated and stored away in bags supplied. Featuring an integrated closed water circuit and measuring approximately 120 x 44 x 47.5 cm, the complete kitchen module weighs less than 10 kg. A particular advantage is its split design,

allowing the kitchen to be used flexibly both inside and outside the vehicle. The new bed system has a sleeping surface of approximately 200 x 134 cm, based on a multi-layer breathable construction and can be configured either as a double bed weighing 12 kg or as a single bed weighing 6 kg. Even with the bed installed, there remains ample room inside the vehicle for relaxing, cooking or storing luggage.

The glimpse of the Future: VWCV’s visions for tomorrow’s vehicles range from autonomous mobility to smart loading spaces. Taking the example of autonomous driving, with the I D. Buzz AD this is now firmly in the present. It was developed together with MOIA, a VW Group-owned technology company, and technology partner Mobileye. MOIA will bring autonomous driving to the road with the ID. Buzz AD. Intensive tests are currently underway in Berlin, Hamburg and Austin (Texas). Here, an autonomous ride-pooling service “Mobility as a Service” (MaaS) – is being tested with the ID. Buzz AD offered as “Transport as a Service” (TaaS).

Stock taking on the Move: Load compartments with intelligent connectivity are another example: Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will present the Intelligent Loading Space (ILS for short) on board a Crafter panel van. A project for the future that will one day make life easier for B2B customers. The Intelligent Loading Space is still a vision at this

stage. But the Crafter clearly shows that, in the future, networked systems on board vans will record equipment and cargo, document processes, simplify logistics, link information to orders or fleet processes and monitor cargo better than ever before. Upgrades for Caddy Cargo and Multivan As featured on the cover Volkswagen Commercial, latest Caddy Maxi gets a redesigned front end, new 16-, 17- and 18-inch wheels and four new colours. Inside, it impresses with a new 12.9-inch infotainment display and the so-called enhanced “Digital Cockpit Pro”. As well as the diesel powered engines, Caddy now has a plug-in hybrid drive, (eHybrid with a system output of 110 kW / 150 PS), based on the 1.5-litre petrol TSI engine.

Described as the great all-rounder the Multivan/Caravelle people-carrier was invented in 1985 and based on the T3. Four further generations have followed to date, with hundreds of thousands sold. The current Multivan has now been further improved with a major hardware and software update. New features include a revised front end, new colours and wheels, additional seating arrangements and a completely new cockpit layout. With the latter, there’s a larger multi-function screen, the gear selection lever is now on a stalk attached to the steering column and there’s a new housing pad for phone charging. LWB ID.Buzz with 4MOTION Another significant development on display was the introduction of a long wheel base version of the ID.Buzz with four-wheel-drive system and Vehicle to Load adapter (V2L). With a flat load floor space of 2.5m, twin rear and double sliding doors, this flagship version has a lot to offer. It can tow 1,600 kg and the V2L discharge adapter when plugged into the charging interface can charge external devices with 230V. Up to 400 plus km range distance is achievable. Fleet Van & Utility profiles Nexus Rental, whose Iris™ rental platform is now fully operational across Ireland

Nexus Rental’s B2B vehicle rental platform, Iris™, is now fully operational across Ireland, purpose-built for the Irish market. Building on a successful UK operation, Nexus is bringing its tech-led rental model to Ireland with a platform developed specifically for Irish fleet, procurement and operations teams. Businesses hire directly from Nexus through its Iris™ platform, and each booking is fulfilled through a quality-assured network of supplier branches, with Nexus selecting the branch for every hire. At launch that means coverage from over 60 locations in the Republic, including more than 20 around Dublin.

James Maden, Strategic Growth Director at Nexus Rental, said: “Bringing Nexus and our Iris™ platform to Ireland has been a huge team effort, and this launch is a milestone we’re genuinely proud of. It reflects our ambition to change how businesses think about vehicle hire with the introduction of a tech-led solution to support our customers’ operations.” The model is aimed at organisations that depend on vehicle hire as FLEETVAN&UTILITY | AUTUMN 26

part of day-to-day operations. For a logistics operator, that means covering peak periods without carrying vehicles through quiet months. For a construction firm, vans can follow projects around the country, with nothing sitting idle between sites. Utilities and other multi-site operators can put vehicles where the work is, then hand them back. The platform is built to scale in both directions, whether a business manages ten vehicles or more than 500. For fleet operators, the proposition is administrative as much as operational. Every booking sits in one platform, placed in under 30 seconds, with no transaction fees, consolidated invoicing and Irish VAT billing. Vehicles can be booked, extended or off-hired online. Damage charges and fines, a familiar source of friction in rental, are handled centrally. A dedicated Nexus team reviews and validates every fine and damage claim before it reaches the customer.

Behind the Irish launch sits an established operation, with more than 25 years in rental management, a £250 million-plus business, and a supply network of over 300 rental partners across the UK and Ireland. Maden added: “Ireland is our first market outside the UK, and we are excited to bring a new approach to business customers with a vehicle hire requirement. We are already delivering cars and vans for Irish businesses. Over time we plan to introduce the wider platform, including heavy goods vehicles, plant and specialist equipment, to the Irish market, as we have in the UK.” Irish businesses can register at ie.nexusrental.com. About Nexus Rental: Founded in Leeds in 2000, Nexus Rental provides business vehicle rental management through its Iris™ platform, which has been fully operational across Ireland since July 2026. ie.nexusrental.com

Test Drive Report - Farizon V7E

With brand siblings such as Volvo Cars, Polestar, Lotus and Proton. Farizon is in good company. This Chinese dedicated commercial vehicle marque which falls under the ownership of the Geely Auto Group is now targeting the Europe light commercial vehicle market, and recently doubled its model line-up with the arrival of the Farizon V7E which was showcased at the Commercial Vehicle Show 2026 at the NEC, Birmingham.

270-degree rear doors

As China’s largest private vehicle manufacturer, Geely has earned a leading position in its domestic market through a focus on technology and the adoption of zero emissions. From a broad zero-emission product portfolio spanning trucks, vans and buses, the Farizon V7E will further grow the appeal of the brand’s product offering to an even greater FLEETVAN&UTILITY | AUTUMN 26

reach of buyers. It’s a medium-sized van that delivers class-leading cargo capacity, payload and range. Based on a city-optimised electric platform it promises efficiency and ease-ofuse. As with today’s battery electric vehicles, the V7E benefits from efficient packaging, with a skateboard chassis and drive-by-wire technology. Making life simple for fleets of all sizes as well as sole traders, the V7E is launched with a choice of a 50 kWh or a 67 kWh battery. Its cargo capacity, payload and low loading platform are all class-leading, with respectively a 6.95 cubic metre cargo capacity, a payload of up to 1,338kg, and an ultra-low 500mm cargo platform for easier loading and unloading. The electric drive assembly is connected to the subframe, enabling a weight reduction of 15 to 20 percent. The V7E’s kerb weight is rated at 1,812kg for the 50kWh model, and 1,942kg for the 67kWh variant. The V7E features vehicle-to-load (V2L) charging capability as standard, enabling users to charge external devices. Located in the cargo area of the van, the 220v three-pin plug socket supports up to 16amp (2.2kW). Taking a look at the overall design, V7E differs somewhat from its larger SV brethren but there are styling similarities that maintain a family resemblance. Aerodynamically, by having a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.27, the V7E is sleeker than similarly specified rivals: delivering up to 475 km on the WLTP City cycle and 330 km under WLTP Combined conditions. Regarding fast charging, a 20-80 percent top-up will take as little as 18 minutes, helping drivers get back on the road asap. Drivers can schedule charging via the in-cabin infotainment system. The V7E adopts a MacPherson independent front and a longitudinal leaf spring rear suspension system for dynamic driving in urban environments. The integrated lower control arm ensures optimal compliance and comfort when unloaded and assures high load-bearing capacity when fully loaded. The van has an impressive tight turning radius

of 6 metres, therefore a U-turn can be completed in a single manoeuvre within two lanes. In addition, V7E is equipped with the same braking system architecture as the SV, featuring front and rear disc brakes. The clever packaging of the motor and skateboard platform allow for a low cargo floor and larger cargo volume, while reducing the need for a second entry step. Supplied by leading global battery supplier, CATL, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells are based on a 400V system, featuring a highstrength pack design for group formation and an embedded frame, which results in increased safety and performance. The electric motor provides 110kW of peak power and 230Nm peak torque at 12,500rpm, and the front-wheel-drive layout delivers strong traction and grip. For extra convenience, the V7E is operated with keyless entry and start. Drivers simply pull the door handle to unlock, press the brake to start, and shift into Drive to set-off. Out on the streetscapes, and with Eco and Normal driving modes on tap, the driver can adjust the setting to adapt the power response, engage the amount of regenerative braking and maximum speed to achieve better efficiency. At 4,995mm long, 2,206mm wide and 1,985mm high, and with a 3,200mm wheelbase, the V7E is more spacious, willing and able than other medium-size vans. The V7E’s PVC lined cargo area measures 2,730mm in length, 1,690mm in width (above the wheel arches) and 1435mm in height. For easier loading and unloading, the V7E features 1,100mm wide dual-opening sliding doors and 270-degree opening rear doors. These allow forklifts to easily load and unload a 1,200mm x 800mm Euro-pallet, with the van able to accommodate three Euro-pallets in total. Indoors, Farizon V7E’s cabin has a two seat arrangement, and features up to fifteen storage compartments, making it easy for driver and passenger to store mobile phones, umbrellas, large water bottles, coffee cups, documents and more. The centre armrest folds flat to reveal two extra-large cupholders, while a large 45-litre storage compartment is located under the front passenger seat. A 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system dominates the centre dash area,

ROAD TEST I | 65 which includes Bluetooth, DAB radio, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 360-degree surround view monitor. Then there’s the seven-inch full LCD instrument cluster displays key information to the driver, while one USB-A and one USB-C port are included to charge devices on-the-move. Thankfully, the central control panel features physical buttons for simple operation of climate control. The steering wheel itself is adjustable for reach and rake, and buttons mounted on the spokes mean drivers can operate and configure seat ventilation, intelligent cruise control and multimedia without

taking their eyes off the road or their hands off the wheel. Built-in safety The Farizon V7E benefits from high strength construction techniques and the latest ADAS technologies to protect occupants and help lower insurance costs. The 17 ADAS intelligent assistance functions on the V7E include: n Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) n Full Speed Range Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) n Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) n Intelligent High Beam Control (IHBC) n Traffic Sign Interpretation (TSI) n 360 Around View Camera (AVM360) n Hill Descent Control (HDC) Extensive pre-production test programme The Farizon V7E has been subjected

to a rigorous five-million kilometre development programme and 20,000 hours of full-endurance testing. The van has also been subjected to 80,000 kilometres of extreme high and low temperature testing, as well as stringent durability tests, including more than 3,000 system and rig tests. Manufactured to world-class quality standards at Farizon’s Shangrao Production Base in China, the V7E was developed using Geely’s extensive expertise in passenger car and commercial vehicle development. Farizon has doubled its Chinese market share for three consecutive years, with a product market share exceeding 20%, continuously consolidating its leading position in the new energy commercial vehicle industry. In 2025, Farizon reached the milestone of 300,000 unit sales, becoming the first new energy commercial vehicle brand to ever achieve this goal. By 2030, Farizon aims to achieve annual sales of 1 million. Text & Photos: Jarlath Sweeney: editor@fleet.ie

Maxus eTERRON 9 - Raising the bar in Pick-ups….literally!

As Europe’s first fully-electric 4x4 pick-up truck, the Maxus eTerron 9 is statement making in itself. We’ve heard, seen and driven the first American emission-free pick-up, the large Ford F-150 Lighting a couple of years ago, but this dual-motor, all-wheel drive electric pick-up from China has the more Irish road friendly dimensions of the standard size pick-up sold in Europe. In a nutshell it delivers 325 kW/442 hp from a 102.2 kWh battery via dual permanent-magnet synchronous motors, with a 430 km WLTP range, a 3,500 kg towing capacity, and a 620 kg payload. Prices start from €86,086. eTerron 9 features a number of unique if not surprising elements, no more so than the adaptive air suspension that can adjust ride height for off-road clearance or lower the vehicle for easier loading. In addition, there are six preset driving modes (including Normal, Mud, and Sand) plus a customisable user mode with over 400 potential configurations. As expected with today’s electric vehicles DC fast charging is offered, taking around 45 minutes at speeds of up to 115 kW to charge from 20% to 80%. As pick-up trucks go, eTerron has a strong visual presence. With overall dimensions of 5,500 mm length, 1,997 mm width, 1,860 mm height, these measurements are generous, being slightly bigger than other 1-tonne type vehicles (including its sister pick-up, the T60) in the marketplace. Its design theme is imposing, and style wise it differs from the diesel version in the SAIC Maxus stable. On board, an eight-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat is provided with ventilation and massage functions, plus FLEETVAN&UTILITY | AUTUMN 26

front seats that fold flat to form a 170 cm sleeping area, great for a Power Nap. All around the cabin there are up to twenty separate storage compartments inside including a handy space under the bonnet, called the front trunk, aka ‘frunk’. A large centre console between the front seats acts as a storage area and phone charge points. Soft leather upholstery and power-adjustable front seats create a luxurious driving experience. As with most new cars nowadays, there are many aspects of communication, data information and practical engagement on the centre dash touchscreen and this model is no exception. The various menus and sub-menus are difficult to learn and adapt to initially and can take prolonged time to get to the intended section, especially for right handed people in right hand drive cars (as the majority of us are less proficient when using our left hand and fingers!) The Harris Group, Maxus importers and distributors for Ireland and the UK have been pleased with the broad interest in this latest model. At the CV Show in Birmingham last April, potential customers were offered a short test drive opportunity on an impromptu ‘off-road’ course where they appreciated the smooth driving experience and discovered that its overall dimensions did not cause an issue when careering around the tight spaces on the man-made track.

As mentioned the adjustable air-independent suspension settings on the rear axle are a practical and useful addition especially when loading and unloading, while the cushioned closing of the tailgate adds a further level of refinement. As regard the load area, it can accommodate and carry a pallet, no bother. For the record, the cargo box measures 1,561x1,500x535mm. Other technical aspects of note include that eTerron’s ground clearance is measured at 230 mm (front axle) and 237 mm (rear axle) and with 550 mm wading depth which is perfectly acceptable in this all-terrain segment.

According to Karl Houghton, Managing Director at Harris Maxus, the eTerron 9 is engineered and designed to achieve a five-star NCAP rating. “Its reinforced structure ensures protection and reliability across all commercial applications.” Text & Photos: Jarlath Sweeney – editor@fleet.ie

Kia moves to up the sales scales with PV7 Cargo

Experience, knowledge, confidence and trust are four strong elements of Kia’s ongoing progress in the light commercial vehicle marketplace across Europe. Having initially entered the marketplace with the PV5 cargo and people carrier, the South Korean automobile manufacturer is about to enter into the most competitive medium-sized van segment with the all-electric PV7 Cargo, which has just been launched at the IAA Transportation trade fair in Hannover. These aforementioned elements or pillars are paramount to meeting its objectives, bearing in mind that there is serious competition on the horizon, not least from the long established LCV brands which are already strong players in the sales league.

to service. Secondly is its knowledge of the light commercial sector from previous experience across the Asian region where generations of the Bongo van and people carrier sold successfully. Confidence and trust stem from the top down, from senior executives who made the decision to invest in a global light commercial campaign with its PBV - Platform Beyond Vehicle programme. Then there’s the design team and engineers who created the product series, while the trust element additionally transcends to the country market distributors and ultimately the dealer network, which has belief and confidence in the PBV product line at retail level. To date the introduction of the PV5 has been well received, a welcome newcomer in both the van and people carrier marketplaces. Impressive sales figures to date shows that the PV5 has captured leading market share in twelve European countries in the Electric Van C-segment. The Nordic region and Eastern Europe is where the brand is doing well with the new model, as well as Ireland and the UK. Some of this success was achieved from various high profile awards such as the International Van of the Year 2026, IF & Red Dot design honours and National Van titles, which also indicate the acceptance of the PV5 as niche making in the compact-medium segment. Here it created an impact with its fresh take on design, primarily with its superior spaciousness and class leading all round visibility. These design and styling traits are carried over with the new PV7 albeit this vehicle is larger, longer, wider and stronger with more range distance. By continuing to use the brand’s PBV dedicated E-GMP.S electric platform, not only does it facilitate a flat floor with a low load height, but it also accommodates 800 volt fast charging, double that of the 400v PV5. In this ultra competitive market, continuous uptime, low cost of ownership, safety and efficiency in a van are key, supported by driver and vehicle performance. This is where the dealerships and Geotab, Kia’s approved telematics partner, deliver on all of the above.

To further explain what Kia has over the current crop of newcomers looking to enter Europe with various types of zero-emission vans, firstly it’s experience, having gained substantial market share with its broad line-up of electric cars. That experience or expertise extends to dealer level from sales FLEETVAN&UTILITY | AUTUMN 26

Efficiencies comes with the easy entry and exit from the spacious cab, which offers great visibility, a comfortable driving position and near to hand vehicle data and infotainment. Add productivity to that as a choice of 71.5 kWh or 96.2 kWh NCM

LAUNCH PAD | 69 batteries produce up to 200 kW of power and 420 Nm of torque to the front wheels. An all-wheel-drive version is on its way later too. A range of more than 460 km on the WLTP cycle is achievable from a full charge and when needs be, the 800v fast charging can done to 80% capacity in around twenty minutes. Research in regard to the overall battery life undertaken by Kia reveal that after three years usage, the battery pack stands at 99% and 97% after five years, which augers well for optimum second life operations and good residual value. That confidence is underpinned by the extended two-pronged warranty package, 7 years/150,000 km for the vehicle and 8 years/160,000 km on the battery cells. Then there’s the V2L - vehicle to load - function, which with 9.2 kW of tappable power, connectable from both inside and outside the vehicle, together with a heavy load driving mode, will appeal to tradespeople. Another feature is the long load through at the lower section of the bulkhead. On the three seat version of the cargo van, the centre seat’s backrest folds down to reveal a worktop and drinks holder. To compare and contrast with the PV5, the interior design of the PV7 is different, with a larger (14.6”) centre dash touchscreen, some buttons installed for vitals engagements and the display at the steering wheel is now much smaller. “The PV7 has been developed to give customers the flexibility to adapt as needs evolve,” said Sang-dae Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of Kia’s PBV Business Division at the pre-IAA preview held the week before in Munich. “As a business-tailored tool engineered to deliver best-in-class EV performance, data-driven solutions, and total service excellence, it will enable customers to improve work efficiency, enhance productivity, and create greater value throughout the business lifecycle.” Designed for logistics, delivery, fleet and small- and medium-sized business operations, the PV7 Cargo is available in 2- and 3-seat configurations globally and prioritises capacity and accessibility. The Cargo Long model offers up to 6.1 m³ of cargo space, while the Cargo High Roof provides up to 8.0 m³. Maximum payload capacity is rated at 1,165 kg for the Long and 1,200 kg for the Compact variant. The Long model features a 550 mm loading height and capacity for up to three Euro pallets (800 × 1,200 mm). The full lineup will include Cargo (Standard, Long, High Roof ) and Passenger (Compact, Long) variants, a dedicated Chassis Cab for specialist applications, along with a wide range of conversion models. Kia’s newly constructed and dedicated Hwaseong EVO West PBV Plant and PBV Conversion Center will support flexible production of standard and converted models, complemented by regional conversion partners. Over time the PV7 family will expand to 23 variants once the sales drive begins in the middle of next year. Kia’s stand at IAA Transportation 2026 at the Messe Hannover showcased its PBV lineup, including three examples of the new PV7 models (one Passenger Long variant and two Cargo Long variants) and seven PV5 derivatives: Cargo Standard, Cargo High Roof, Passenger (7-seater), Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV), Chassis Cab, Crew and Food Truck (Conversion). Light Commercials top the bill at IAA Transportation Many Asian brands among the 150 premiers and launches at the Messe Hannover IAA Transportation 2026 held true its new slogan “We Deliver” by providing a leading platform for commercial vehicles and all elements of logistics. The six day exhibition, held as usual at the Hannover Messe grounds, has returned full throttle in premiering latest and future technologies in the truck, van, bus and trailer sectors, plus all associated auxiliaries. The biennial event brings together the greatest innovators, engineers and designers to meet and greet with decision makers, industry experts, transport operators and drivers that are shaping the future of road transport in all manners of sustainability. As expected, the main focus is on emission-free propulsion and the required energy sources along with digital technologies, and next level autonomous driving. While all visitors chalked up a substantial step count transversing the 14 halls and outside displays, the majority were overwhelmed with the increasing number of Asian originated exhibitors, commanding a significant amount of floor space throughout the vast compound. In this section review, happenings in the light commercial segments are covered.

RENAULT VANS Taking centre stage in Hall 13 at the Renault Van’s stand were selection of fourth generation Trafic E-Tech electric models proudly displaying the prestigious International Van of the Year 2027 (IVOTY) logo. As presented on stand FLEETVAN&UTILITY | AUTUMN 26

BYD BYD - Build Your Dreams, the Chinese brand that has captured the imagination of the general electric car buying public and many millions have commuted in their electric buses across numerous European cities. At the IAA, BYD finally unveiled, after much expectation and anticipation, examples from its most comprehensive zero-emission commercial vehicle portfolio, which

spans from urban and last-mile delivery through to regional, vocational and long-haul transport. To head up the organisation in Europe, BYD appointed one of the most experienced commercial vehicle executives in Domenico Gostoli as head of the BYD commercial vehicles branch for Europe and EMEA. The Italian native who has spent decades at top level with Iveco, Fiat Professional and RAM outlined its wider approach to fleet electrification, bringing together vehicles, Blade Battery technology, megawatt charging, energy storage and intelligent energy management within a single ecosystem. CHERY/DELIVAN Delivan, as discovered at the CV Show in Birmingham last April, is a new European focused van brand from Chery Holding. Unveiled here was the first two all-electric production vans, representing two different sizes within its forthcoming European range and designed to meet a variety of commercial needs. The two production vans were joined by four converted variants, demonstrating the flexibility of Delivan’s vehicle platforms and their potential for specialist operations in collaboration with several European conversion partners. Guided by the “In Somewhere, For Somewhere, Be Somewhere” approach, Delivan is building its European presence

REVIEW | 71 through local operations, with its European headquarters in Liverpool and a German subsidiary set to be formally established in September. Delivan announced agreements with key customers and strategic European partners, further advancing its European localisation strategy. The new Chinese brand, owned by the Geely Auto group, which also has Volvo cars and Polestar among others in its portfolio, is set to enter the European commercial vehicle market in phases from 2027.

FARIZON Another Asian brand making in-roads across Europe is Farizon, which outlined its latest developments and vision for Europe in a relaxed setting, while presenting its vehicle line-up, including the European premiere of the Homtruck, alongside the SV and V7E vans already on sale in Europe.

FORD PRO As per the CV Show debutant, Ford Pro is expanding its Transit lineup with the new Transit City. The joint venture Van, co-developed and produced by Chinese company JAC, is fully electric available to order now ready to tackle the urban commercial environment. It is offered as a panel van in various lengths and heights and, for the first time in the 1-tonne payload class, as a chassis cab for custom body configurations. The 110 kW (150 hp) electric motor is powered by a 56 kWh LFP battery. This gives the Transit City a range of up to 254 kilometres, with Ford reporting up to 381 kilometres in city driving. At a DC fast-charging station, the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in approx-

imately 33 minutes. Depending on the configuration, the van offers a cargo length of over three meters, up to eight cubic meters of cargo volume, and a maximum payload of 1,275 kilograms. The chassis cab can be outfitted with flatbed or box bodies, among other options. Ford estimates maintenance costs to be 40 percent lower compared to a similar diesel model. Adjacent was the imposing site of the new Ranger Super Duty with loaded twin wheel trailer attached.

FOTON MOTOR Foton Motor, which has ranked number one in China’s commercial vehicle industry for 21 consecutive years, exhibited its largest lineup ever. With a focus on global markets, Foton’s expansive stage setting included seven ‘new energy’ vehicles and six self-developed core components. On the LCV front, the new Foton Galaxus R9 PHEV has completed field tests in Spain, while there was a number of the Cavan C1 vans on show, first launched at the CV Show in Birmingham. A selection truck and bus models also made their overseas public debut as well as the Tunland V9 PHEV pick-up truck. Components on show included power batteries, e-drive axles, and electric controls for heavy vehicles, e-drive axles for light vehicles, low-voltage vehicle controllers, and megawatt charging stations. MAN With the presentation of two near-production innovation vehicles, MAN indicated the next steps in its electrification strategy for the van segment. These zero-emissions light commercials are based on the MAN TGE and were developed together with Swiss development partner Flux for specialised applications that require, among other things, a higher gross vehicle weight, all-wheel drive and electric power take-offs. These include emergency services, fire brigades and municipal operations, which up to now could only be electrified to a limited extent. The installed battery, with a gross capacity of 119 kWh, enables ranges of up to 480 kilometres according to WLTP. MAN is using IAA Transportation to gather customer feedback on the project. Ten years after its world premiere in Hanover, MAN is presenting new customisation options from MAN Individual, as well as new MAN TGE Connect services. The MAN Individual range is being expanded with the MAN TGE Individual Lion X trim line and the Individual Black entry-level package. The highlight of the digital service offering for the MAN van is the new “Lifetime Connectivity”, available since September at no additional cost to the customer. This means all digital services in the MAN TGE, including online functions and map updates, are now offered at no extra charge. Another new feature is the MAN TGE Connect App, which helps drivers make their everyday work more comfortable, efficient and transparent.

Volume 23. No. 6 October 2026

Design, creativity, and innovation come together for Autostyle Design Competition 2026 The Autostyle Design Competition returns for its 22nd edition, scheduled for 9 October 2026, in San Benedetto Po, Mantova, Italy. The majestic setting of the Polirone Monastic Complex, one of the Italian most prestigious historical sites and the perfect venue where design, creativity, and innovation come together and feature the leading figures from the most important international automotive design centres. Created and promoted by automotive parts manufacturers Berman, Autostyle has established is status as a major international meeting point bridging automotive design, industry, education, and project culture, bringing together designers, design centre chiefs, students, journalists, and industry professionals. “Over the years, the event has created a direct dialogue between those who envision the car of the future, those who design it, and those who tell the story of its evolution,” commented Roberto Artioli, founder Autostyle. The historical core of Autostyle is the Design Competition, dedicated to students from prestigious interna-

tional universities and design schools. Young designers are challenged to interpret the car of the future through projects capable of combining creativity, innovation, new forms of mobility, and visionary thinking. The entries will be evaluated by an international jury composed of representatives from leading automotive design centres and authoritative figures from specialised automotive and design press. For the 2026 edition, the program features jury members from Aston Martin, Bentley, CaseNewHolland (CNH), Ducati, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz AMG, and Toyota ED2, alongside representatives from international publications such as Auto & Design, Motor, Fleet Publications, RAMP. space, and Virtual Car. Alongside the competition, one of the most anticipated highlights of Autostyle is traditionally the session dedicated to the Design Centres. The leaders of international automotive design will take the stage to share experiences, projects, and visions, detailing the creative journey that leads from an initial intuition to the final vehicle: from stylistic research and development of shapes to materials, technologies and new mobility demands. A privileged opportunity to discover what normally goes on behind the scenes in the creation of a car and to hear directly from the designers who shape its identity and character. For this, presentations of new models are scheduled by Aston Martin, CNH, Ducati,

Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, MercedesBenz, and Toyota. Design will then step off the stage to become the focus in the outdoor spaces. The cars presented during the sessions will be displayed in the evocative Piazza Matilde di Canossa, in the heart of San Benedetto Po, transforming a space of immense historical and architectural value into an exhibition dedicated to contemporary automotive design. The Auto Expo will therefore offer guests the opportunity to closely examine the models and explore the relationship between idea, project, and final product, creating a striking dialogue between heritage and innovation, architecture and automotive design. The event will kick off on Thursday, October 8, with the official opening of the event and the presentation of partners and the students competing in the Design Competition. Friday, 9 October, will be the main day of Autostyle, dedicated to the Design Competition, meetings with the Design Centres, new model presentations, and the Auto Expo. “With this 22nd edition, Autostyle renews its mission: to create a meeting place between the generations shaping the future of design and the professionals who lead it today, fostering the exchange of ideas, experiences, and visions for the future of the automobile,” concluded Roberto. The event is not open to the public; attendance is by invitation only and subject to a limited capacity. www.fleet.ie

How Nissan crafts the 3rd generation LEAF

Ever wondered what it takes to build an electric car that’s shaping the future of mobility? Inside Nissan’s Sunderland Plant there is passion, dedication and innovation behind the all-new LEAF - built in Europe, by people who take pride in every detail.

Every new LEAF rolling off the line reflects Nissan’s dedication to quality, sustainability and innovation. From advanced automation and quality assurance systems to the expertise of Sunderland’s highly trained workforce, the result is an EV built to meet Europe’s expectations for performance, reliability and sustainability.

localised supply chains – shaping a cleaner, more resilient future for mobility.

Manufactured at Nissan’s stateof-the-art facility in Sunderland, the all-new LEAF marks the start of a new chapter in EV manufacturing - powered by up to 20% renewable electricity as part of Nissan’s EV36Zero initiative. This blueprint for sustainable production underscores Nissan’s commitment to decarbonisation, green skills, and

As part of Nissan’s global EV strategy, production of the all-new LEAF at Sunderland reaffirms the company’s long-term investment in electrification and its role in accelerating the shift to cleaner transport, delivering vehicles that embody both innovation and environmental responsibility.

When it comes to safer driving, the latest brands from China are setting their sights high and are competing with Europe’s established marques, all achieved the maximum five-star rating.

manufactured car, in 2010. There is still some way to go, but these results clearly demonstrate that Chinese carmakers are still working hard to match the high standards expected by European consumers. It would be preferable for European brand CUPRA to offer active technologies as standard, but a safety pack is a compromise. By actively embracing Euro NCAP’s rigorous targets particularly this year, carmakers are showing they want to deliver safer vehicles for everyone on Europe’s roads. Euro NCAP continues to offer even more insights on the safety performance of new cars. Consumers should remember however that an important part of the safety journey is the drive – don’t forget to try before you buy!”

At the heart of new LEAF’s production is Nissan’s CMF-EV platform (Common Modular Family for EV) - a flexible, efficient architecture that enables Nissan to build diverse EV models on a shared foundation. This platform delivers manufacturing precision and agility throughout the production process.

Euro NCAP tests show car makers continue to drive for safety Under the latest 2026 assessment protocols, extensive on-road evaluation and comprehensive crash testing carried out by Euro NCAP, the latest safety performance results are now available for new arrivals such as the Cupra Raval, Leapmotor B05, Geely E2 and Aion UT. The optional Safety Pack offered by CUPRA Raval significantly increases the active technologies fitted to the car and enhances the car’s ability to respond to potential danger, especially in low-speed driving and at junctions. Hence the model’s five-star rating, though, while still boasting impressive crash protection, the Raval only manages a four-star score with standard safety equipment. While providing the full suite of safety equipment as standard would be preferable, an optional safety pack keeps the vehicle affordable whilst making additional safety technologies available to consumers who choose them.

Dr. Aled Williams, Programme Director Euro NCAP, commented on the findings: “Chinese models are increasingly popular with European consumers, accounting for seven per cent of all EU new car sales, and nearly 10 per cent in the UK, last year. Since 2021, in response to consumer trends, the number of Chinese cars assessed by Euro NCAP for safety has risen nearly ten-fold. “Automotive safety across Chinese vehicles has evolved dramatically since Euro NCAP tested its first Chinese-

MG4 Urban Asian car with European feel

MG cars have been making waves here in Ireland since the former British Leyland brand was bought by SAIC Motor (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation), a huge state-owned auto manufacturer based in China. MG has now become a significant player both here and worldwide. Best known nowadays for innovation in the fields of electric and hybrid cars, it offers a range of models covering many segments of the marketplace. Its latest offering is the MG4 Urban, a

new model that should not be confused with the MG4 that was launched in 2022 and continues on sale today. The main difference with MG4 Urban is dictated by the fact that this new model in driven by the front wheels, whereas the original had its traction from the rear wheels. From the exterior this is a very smart looking all-electric hatchback. It is quite the eye catcher and backs that up with a surprising amount of space because of the flat floor achievable from the frontwheel-drive setup. The space continues in the boot area with a decent 577 litres of space and massive total storage up to 1,364 litres with the seats down. Buyers get a clever interior that doesn’t bamboozle the driver with mad technology. There is a prominent 12.8-inch HD central touchscreen, a 7-inch driver display, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and enough physical control buttons for the primary functions that reduce the need for drivers to take their eyes off the road. This is a huge plus for this car and we hope other makers from China soon follow suit as needing the screen to make simple changes is both dangerous and really annoying. It also starts with a competitive entry pricing of around €22,995 for

the standard model that comes with a 43 kWh battery promising a range of between 324 km to 405 km, depending on how it is driven and the conditions during the journey. There is also a long range version which is fitted with a 54 kWh LFP battery with a 118 kW (160 hp) motor, this version giving up to 416 km WLTP range. Charging is also quite impressive, giving 10% to 80% in about 28 to 30 minutes at peak speeds up to 87 kW. By their nature electric cars can be rather dull from a driving point of view. Some enthusiasts rightly complain about the lack of feedback from the chassis or the steering feel from most electric cars. This car is not the worst of the ilk. It does have a bit of character and can be rather playful in urban and rural areas. The fun factor is helped by the size, its short length of 4.4 metres and the fact that the four wheels are pushed out to the four corners of the car. MG Motors is rather proud of the fact that this new car has been awarded a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating. This alone is something that will give buyers additional confidence. Overall the looks, the detailing and the enjoyable drive make this MG4 Urban a car that will please many drivers. To be able to buy it at under €23,000 is the cherry on the top. While it’s a car that comes from China it has a real European feel.

300 4MATIC (with 606km range), and GLC 400 4MATIC (with larger 94kWh battery and 664km range). All versions use an 800-volt system with 10% - 80% charging in 22 minutes and, according to Mercedes-Benz, the capacity to add over 300km range in around 10 minutes. Energy consumption is rated at 14.9kWh per 100km. In welcoming their introduction, Patrick Howlett, National Sales Manager, Mercedes-Benz Ireland commented: “The arrival of the new GLB and GLC BEV marks a defining moment for MercedesBenz in the Irish market. Both models bring together the latest technology, safety and design thinking, while offering customers a choice, with the GLB available in both all-electric and petrol-hybrid versions, and the current GLC also remaining available alongside the new all-electric model.”

Nissan turns over a new Leaf In looking at the generation line-up of the Nissan Leafs at the Irish launch, there is no other electric vehicle on the market has the same heritage which has sold close to 700,000 units since its debut in 2010. Is brand loyalty a vanishing concept for car manufacturers? The Ford Transit Custom and Volkswagen Transporter have fiercely loyal customers, but the latest models share the same.

I was thinking recently, not in relation to the transport sector specifically, about how companies love to talk about customer loyalty….and then do so little to retain it. A typical example is the type of advertisement that promises a great introductory offer for new customers that sign up. It’s invariably followed with the caveat ‘Offer available for new customers only’. Or when it comes to insurance renewal why is it that your existing insurer nearly always comes back with a more expensive quote than last year. They’ll assure you this is their best offer, yet if you bother to shop around and get cheaper quotes from other providers it’s amazing how they then can somehow manage to match those quotes. Doubtless companies have realms of data that tells them that once they get a customer, then he or she is likely to stay regardless of how poorly they are treated, but it’s all rather cynical and dispiriting. Wouldn’t it be nice if companies existed that stood by their claims that their customers are important to them. Or conversely, if they were honest enough to admit that they didn’t really give a jot about them. Anyway this musing got me thinking about brand loyalty when it comes to cars and commercial vehicles. Manufacturers are no different to other companies in that they love to talk about customer loyalty and how their customers keep coming back time and again for another new vehicle from the same brand. In many respects they have a natural advantage over other businesses, not only because cars are such a big investment, but typically because we become emotionally attached to our cars and car brands in a way that we don’t for other products. That’s a loyalty that’s often formed FLEETCAR | AUTUMN 26

in formative years. If your parents drove Opels or Audis or Hondas when you were growing up, the chances are you will have a natural affinity for those brands. So in theory car manufacturers have it relatively easy. Grab a customer in their early driving career and you may have one for life. But that’s a little simplistic, and increasingly loyalty to a brand is being questioned when more and more manufacturers are forming alliances with each other and using shared platforms, engines, electric motors, you name it. It’s kind of hard to say, for example, that the new Grande Panda is a bona fide Fiat product in the way the original Panda was when you know it shares virtually all its parts with the Citroën C3 and Opel Frontera. And I’m not picking on Fiat here, virtually all European brands are now extensively platform-sharing to the extent that there are relatively few standalone models now on sale. So if you’re a diehard Ford fan, for example, are you going to be excited about the yet to be revealed new small electric car which is widely if unofficially acknowledged to be a derivative of the Renault 5 and newly launched Nissan Micra? We’ve seen already in the commercial world where loyal customers of the Volkswagen Transporter have turned away from the latest model because Ford has been the lead partner of the product that now shares much with the Transit Custom, while Ford aficionados have been equally dismissive of the Volkswagen Caddy derived Transit Connect. We can perhaps take encouragement from the words of Jim Baumbick, Ford’s President in Europe. Speaking at an event earlier this year he stated the

brand’s commitment to build cars that were recognisably Fords, regardless of whether they shared parts with other cars. “We will build unapologetic, thrilling passenger vehicles that people really desire, vehicles that are fun to drive, and

they will conquer any terrain. No boring cars, no toasters on wheels.” That’s what enthusiasts of a brand want to hear, that the DNA that made them fall for a brand can still exist, and that the product can be sufficiently unique regardless of its shared underpinnings. And it’s critical if manufacturers are going to retain brand loyalty throughout a person’s driving career. Of course lest we fear this is all a new phenomenon, think back to the British motor industry of the fifties through to the seventies and brands like Austin, Morris, Rover, Riley, Wolseley, Triumph and Vanden Plas to name but a few. At one stage proud manufacturers of individual models, by those latter years they were all selling what were essentially rebadged versions of the exact same cars. And it didn’t stop customers from remaining loyal to their preferred badge. Let’s just hope that the ultimate demise of nearly all these brands under British Leyland ownership isn’t a portent of where our current motor industry is headed. Quinn RV - Age old bodybuilding tradition in the modern era

It is indeed fitting that Quinn RV, a 225 year old family business involved in engineering is based in Athenry. The County Galway town is one of the few in Ireland to originate as a walled enclosure, with lots of remnants still remaining such as the arch gateway, defense towers and turrets. While this medieval craftsmanship remains preserved, the tradition of innovation, design and engineering from the days of the horse drawn carriage has continued strongly through the centuries to today’s refrigerated truck bodies, front-line emergency vehicles, and Cold Store solutions. It’s in this specialized industry that the Quinn family is a leading manufacturer serving these industries 5 Generations later. The modern business was developed by Tommy Quinn in the early 1980’s with the introduction of composite panel manufacturing. This was a major step forward for the business, Tommys foresight to migrate away from the production of Arch agricultural tractor trailers brought a new era and a new market in the refrigerated truck body business. Today, as the firm continues to evolve and move forward, with plans confirmed for a major expansion to increase capacity to serve an ever-growing market that now sees Quinn RV exporting 70% of all manufactured goods to the UK, Europe, The Middle East and the USA. Quinn vehicles operates from 3 sites in Galway, the main manufacturing plant in Athenry where all the elements are produced, sheet metal components are laser cut and formed, welded in to sub-assemblies, Alloy sections are CNC cut and profiled, stored in kits for assembly. Ambulance and emergency service vehicles are assembled, mounted onto chassis on the same site, where a carefully choregraphed assembly facility pieces together bodywork with precision and quality unmatched in the industry. On the same site in Athenry the SIP factory produces all the composite panels, every metric of panel is catered for in a purpose built modern manufacturing facility. From simple 3 element panels 1m x 1m up to multi-element panels 4.5m x 17m are bonded, vacuum cured and CNC cut ready for assembly. 10km away in nearby Oranmore, refrigerated truck bodies and portable cold stores are assembled, commissioned and dispatched to transport, food and pharmaceutical customers. Quinn Vehicle focus on the HGV market, 12t – 26t Rigid vehicles in Single and Multi Temp variants, todays transport industry relies on manufacturer’s to develop solution for the ever challenging transport and distribution industry. The Quinn Business is managed today by brothers Micheàl and Sheamus Quinn, who have both served their time in all FLEETTRAILER&BODYBUILDER | AUTUMN 26

aspects of the multi-faceted manufacturing business. Micheal outlines the new multi-million euro investment plan, which will include the modernization of some of the existing factory buildings and new builds on an adjacent green field site. In essence the multi million euro capital spend will be largest investment in the business to date, that will see a doubling of the floor space, and increasing efficiencies. “The demand is there, but we just can’t meet it at the present,” stated Micheàl. “It will mean the installation of more automation, robotics and material handling systems while still increasing [the number of ] employees,” he added. Lots of people in manufacturing are talking about Industry 5.0, the adoption of AI, Micheàl explains, while AI is important and will play its part in our business, we are still committed to training and up-skilling our people to meet the demands of a modern workforce. “Currently employee numbers are at 112. They work a four day compressed week over two shifts at the facilities, Athenry and Oranmore, which works well.” It gives a great balance to our employees having a 3 day weekend. On a factory floor walk-through with Micheal, he nostalgically described the decades of expansion of the premises bay by bay, calling out development from each era of the 80s, 90s and

PROFILE I | 89 Noughties, highlighting the many new installations of equipment such as automated jigs, CNC equipment and robotic welding machines over the years. As befits a modern production facility, digital worksheets and drawings on large screens at each of the eleven assembly stations are used, eliminating the need for physical paper trails. ‘Uniquely, Quinn RV is one of the few body builders that designs and manufactures 100 percent of its vehicle’s in-house’ Such is the success of the company that the chances are that if you notice any 18-tonne rigid truck with a refrigerated body delivering to retail or hospitality outlets in any town, that body is ‘Made by Quinn’s’ You can be equally assured that it is built to a very high standard too, as the trade demands it due to the nature of the distribution segment in road transport. The same can be said for the ambulance fleet operated by the HSE nationwide, as well as fleets in Britain and the Middle East. Most of the distinctively coloured MercedesBenz Sprinter box body ambulances seen on the road are likely to have come out from the Athenry factory. Quinns manufacture and pre-prepare the bodies for specialist conversion carried out by Wilkers (Clara) for use here in Ireland and further afield. Since production in this market began some modifications have been made to the unit, based on user experience and feedback, but in general the shape has unchanged. While the majority of the builds are on Sprinter chassis, other makes and models have been worked on, including the MAN TGE, Ford E-Transit and Iveco Daily 4x4. The latter two involved conversion complex jobs but were completed with ingenuity and guile. Micheàl explained that the transition toward electric propulsion for these Front Line Accident & Emergency vehicles is challenging, firstly to get around the battery packs when fitting the body, while the extra weight of said batteries means weight savings must be created elsewhere around the vehicle without compromising on safety. Changes in the management structure, such as the appointment senior management in 2018, allows Micheal and Sheamus can get out and about, meeting and dealing with customers, seeking new opportunities while still remaining hands-on on the factory floor, in design and process improvements. Presently, thanks to the efficiency of a Leader led Lean Production system, up to 7 ambulances and 3 truck bodies are turned out every week. Another area of specialty and one with further growth potential is Military Emergency Vehicles, again with all-wheeldrive systems.

Two recent developments, one locally and the other in Dublin will benefit Quinns according to Micheal. These are the arrival of Dexcom and the takeover by Dawsons Group of Dan Ryan Truck Rental. “The newly constructed Dexcom facility is impressive and it’s the company’s first production site for continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. It will certainly help put Athenry on the map, and with €300 million committed over the next five years and with more that 1,000 skilled workers across engineering, operations, finance and logistics, this augers well for the future here in the West of Ireland,“ he said. Commenting on the Dawson acquisition of Dan Ryan Truck Rentals, having had a long-standing business relationship and bodybuilding supply deal with the company. He sees the move in acquiring Dan Ryan as a positive, it shows Ireland as a buoyant market and Quinn Vehicles are here to serve the market for many years to come. Then there’s the proposed new link road from Athenry to the M6 motorway, This new link road which is due to be completed in 2029, will give the new Quinn Facilities direct access to the M6 and M17 Motorways, which will further enhance efficiencies to serve our customers. All of which is adding up to a positive future for the Quinn family as it prepares a path for the next generation to come along. Text: Jarlath Sweeney - editor@fleet.ie

JWQ European Ltd - Up, Up & Away with specially liveried Faymonville trailer

Pictured at the Faymonville headquarters in Luxembourg was this striking new Faymonville MAX low-loader curtainside semi-trailer which was being collected by JWQ European Ltd, (aka James Quinn Transport). Owned and operated by Jimmy Quinn, the Ballagan, Greenore, County Louth enterprise has been operating across Europe since 1983, specialising in oversized, Out-of-Gauge equipment,

heavy plant machinery transport and project cargo movements, such as Data Centre units. The new addition to his fleet, purchased from Ashbourne Truck Centre, is a specially commissioned tri-axle low-loader semi-trailer, with rear steer and full height rear door. Sporting a special aviation themed livery, it will primarily handle the carriage of delicate cargo. “It’s a covered in Low-loader with a fully retractable roof and the back pillars widen to facilitate loading pieces of up

to 4.0 meters wide on solid full width ramps,” explained Jimmy. “It also has a liftable bed so as low ground clearance cargo can go from the ground to the neck of the trailer without fouling. Equipped with a grid floor it is capable of transporting rubber tyred plant as well as tracked equipment. The curtains expand on length and height and the roof can be set to run at 4.4 m high where permitted but can run at the European limit of 4.0 m high ordinarily without permit. It’s ideal for large aero engines, machine tools electrically powered forklifts and cargo handling equipment where cargo requires a high level of weather protection. It’s also designed to operate at 57,000 kgs gross vehicle weight.”

Collett expands its specialist heavy transport fleet with the addition of its first bridge crossing system – New Greiner BUSY 1050 As cargo continues to increase in size and weight, trailer configurations and axle loads required to transport it can limit the routes available. At heavy haulage specialists Collett & Sons Ltd., it’s a situation that crops up regularly, as bridges, culverts and other load-restricted structures can prevent larger transport combinations from using an otherwise suitable route. The Greiner BUSY 1050 provides an engineered bridge-over-bridge solution to overcome these restrictions. The modular system is assembled over the existing structure, creating a temporary crossing which allows the transport combination to pass over without applying the full axle loads directly to the structure below. FLEETTRAILER&BODYBUILDER | AUTUMN 26

Collett’s new equipment is capable of over-bridging structures up to 25 metres, while its modular design allows the crossing length to be adapted to suit the requirements of individual projects, providing the potential for both shorter and longer configurations. With a rating of 1,050 meter/tonne, the capacity of the BUSY 1050 varies depending on the crossing span and transport configuration. Each application will be assessed by Collett’s Engineering department, with factors including the structure, axle configuration and load distribution used to calculate the required system configuration and permissible loading. Deployment of the BUSY 1050 will bring together Collett’s Engineering, Heavy Lift and Heavy Transport teams, covering

the planning and calculations, assembly of the crossing system and subsequent transport operation. The investment reflects Collett’s continued focus on developing its specialist fleet around the changing requirements of its clients. Adding the BUSY 1050 provides another capability that can be considered from the early stages of route planning through to the final transport operation. *The image shows the BUSY 1050 at Collett’s Goole Heavy Lift depot, where the team carried out a trial assembly ahead of the system’s first project later in September. Are lightweight trailers the future of transport? Topic of discussion at Montracon Trailers For years, discussions about improving transport efficiency have focused on engines, fuel prices and driver behaviour. Today, another question is becoming increasingly important. How much does the trailer weigh? As operators look for ways to reduce operating costs, improve fuel efficiency and lower emissions, lightweight trailer design is moving higher up the agenda. What was once considered a specialist requirement is now becoming part of everyday fleet planning. The question isn’t whether lightweight trailers have a place in modern transport. It’s whether businesses can afford to ignore them. Every kilogram matters A trailer carries more than freight. It also carries its own weight. The heavier the trailer, the more energy is needed to move it. While that might seem insignificant over a single journey, the impact becomes much more noticeable across thousands of miles and hundreds of deliveries. Reducing trailer weight creates opportunities that extend far beyond the trailer itself. It can allow operators to: n Increase available payload n Improve fuel efficiency n Reduce operating costs n Lower carbon emissions n Improve overall fleet efficiency For businesses working with tight margins, even relatively small gains can deliver meaningful long-term savings. More payload without increasing fleet size For many operators, payload is one of the most valuable assets they have. If a trailer can legally carry more product without exceeding weight limits, every journey becomes more productive. That doesn’t necessarily mean carrying heavier loads every day. It means giving operators greater flexibility when the opportunity arises. Over the course of a year, that additional capacity can FLEETTRAILER&BODYBUILDER | AUTUMN 26

improve productivity without increasing the number of vehicles on the road. Fuel efficiency isn’t just about the truck Fuel remains one of the largest operating costs for most transport businesses. Modern tractor-units have become increasingly efficient, but the trailer also has an important role to play. A lighter trailer requires less energy to move, helping reduce fuel consumption across its working life. While the savings from a single journey may appear modest, they become much more significant when multiplied across an entire fleet. Improving fuel efficiency isn’t usually about one major change. It’s often the result of many smaller improvements working together. Sustainability starts with smarter engineering Much of the conversation around sustainable transport focuses on electric vehicles, alternative fuels and charging infrastructure. Those developments are important, but sustainability can also be achieved through better engineering. Designing trailers that use materials more efficiently, reduce unnecessary weight and remain in service for longer all contribute towards lowering environmental impact. A trailer that delivers reliable performance for many years while reducing fuel consumption supports both commercial and environmental goals. Lightweight doesn’t mean compromising on strength One of the biggest misconceptions about lightweight trailers is that reducing weight means reducing durability. Modern trailer engineering proves otherwise. Advances in manufacturing techniques, material selection and chassis design allow weight to be reduced without sacrificing the strength needed for demanding daily operations. The challenge isn’t simply making a

trailer lighter. It’s making it lighter while maintaining the quality, durability and reliability operators expect. Engineering with the future in mind As transport continues to evolve, trailer manufacturers are also rethinking traditional designs. Modular construction, improved aerodynamics, smarter material selection and more efficient manufacturing processes are helping create trailers that are lighter, stronger and better suited to the demands of

modern logistics. These developments aren’t about following trends. They’re about helping operators prepare for the future while improving performance today. Lightweight engineering in practice Lightweight design only delivers value if it works in the real world. Montracon’s Lightweight Box Van was developed to help operators maximise payload while reducing overall trailer weight. Rather than focusing on weight reduction alone, the design brings together a new chassis, modular construction and engineering refinements that support fuel efficiency, lower emissions and long-term durability. The result is a trailer that reflects changing industry priorities without compromising the qualities operators rely on every day. The future is about working smarter Transport has always evolved. Vehicles become more efficient. Technology becomes more capable. Operators continually look for ways to

improve productivity while controlling costs. Trailer design is no different. Lightweight engineering is becoming an increasingly important part of that journey because it helps address several challenges at once: payload, fuel efficiency, emissions and whole-life operating costs. The future of road transport won’t be shaped by a single innovation. It will come from thousands of smarter engineering decisions that, together, make fleets more efficient, more sustainable and better prepared for whatever comes next. Topic II Could bamboo really outperform hardwood? Trailer floors take a beating. Could bamboo really do the same job as traditional hardwood? Sustainability matters, but a commercial trailer floor still needs to cope with heavy loads, repeated loading and unloading and years of use. Choosing a material simply because it is more sustainable isn’t enough. It has to perform. That’s why we’ve put bamboo flooring to the test. Why bamboo trailer flooring? Traditional hardwood such as Keruing has been used in commercial trailer flooring for years. It’s familiar, proven and trusted across the transport industry. Bamboo offers an alternative. It is fast-growing, weather resistant and offers a strong strength-to-weight ratio. The important question for us was how it would perform against an established hardwood. Putting bamboo against Keruing Our bamboo flooring was tested

alongside traditional Keruing hardwood using a test procedure based on CEN 283 / ISO 1496. Both materials were tested at a thickness of 28 mm under the same conditions. With a 450 mm traverse, the bamboo samples achieved point-loading results of 5.5 tonnes and 5.3 tonnes, compared with 5.2 tonnes for both Keruing samples. Testing with a 350 mm traverse produced a bamboo result of 7.4 tonnes, compared with 6.8 tonnes for Keruing. A further bamboo sample achieved 7.5 tonnes. Across the tests carried out, bamboo matched or exceeded the Keruing comparison results. For us, that’s the important part. Bamboo offers sustainability benefits, but it also demonstrated the performance needed to make it a serious option for commercial trailer flooring. What does this mean for fleet operators? Fleet operators need flooring that can cope with the demands of everyday transport. The type of freight, loading method and trailer specification will always influence the right flooring choice, but the testing gives operators another proven option to consider. Our bamboo flooring is available as single floor parts, panel boards with or without anti-slip coating, and custom-made formats. We’re that confident in its performance that we can offer a five-year warranty.

Could bamboo replace traditional hardwood? Keruing remains an established choice for commercial trailer flooring, but bamboo gives operators an alternative. It is fast-growing, offers sustainability benefits and, most importantly, performed strongly when tested against Keruing. For operators looking at the next generation of commercial trailer flooring, bamboo is worth considering. Dawn of new era at Montracon Montracon is a leading commercial trailer manufacturer, founded in 1977 in Mallusk, County Antrim. The company was a subsidiary of Ballyvesey Holdings, for decades, owned by the Montgomery family, growing into a major UK and European trailer builder with main operations based in Doncaster and Market Weighton, Yorkshire, alongside Mallusk. Dangers of HGV Trailer under-run safety highlighted by Euro NCAP *Costing 400 lives every year

Hundreds of road deaths each year are caused by rear impact guards that offer inadequate protection to drivers and passengers in incidents with slowing or stationary HGV trucks and trailers. That is the conclusion from Euro NCAP and collaborating safety organisations: Germany’s ADAC, Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket), and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the US. This followed a comprehensive testing campaign that exposes critical vulnerabilities in both vehicle crash-avoidance technology and structural safety guards fitted to the rear of trucks and trailers. The investigation was initiated and supported by the National Highways in the UK, informed by analysis of collision data on the strategic road network, and examines trailer rear under-run impacts – collisions where, in some circumstances, a passenger car slides beneath the back of a heavy goods vehicle (HGV). This crash type is potentially leading to approximately 400 fatalities across the EU and UK every year. By conducting real-world track tests alongside crash testing at international research facilities, Euro NCAP has exposed a double-failure in road safety: sensors of some older Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are failing to see trailers, and the physical safety guards fitted to the back of trucks and trailers are failing to stop cars from sliding beneath them in some circumstances when a crash occurs, leading to significant injuries and fatalities. FLEETTRAILER&BODYBUILDER | AUTUMN 26

Yet in North America, a superior solution that can prevent deadly rear underrun impacts already exists and is fitted to most new trailers. The electronic blind spot: not all ADAS systems see trucks and trailers The research exposed flaws in the ability of older ADAS systems to identify stationary trucks and trailers. To measure the performance of modern Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) systems, Euro NCAP compared vehicle performance against the standard

Global Vehicle Target (GVT) and a fleet of real commercial trailers under varying real-world conditions. All tested passenger cars’ ADAS systems featured both camera and radar sensors. When driven toward the standard laboratory GVT used in all manufacturer tests, the test vehicles successfully detected the threat all the time. However, when tested against real HGV rear-ends – such as curtainside and skeletal trailers, and impact protection vehicles used in roadworks (IPVs) – the detection rate fell in several cases.

The testing highlighted a divide between the latest generation of ADAS systems compared with previous generations. And with the average age of cars on the road continuing to rise, it will take more than 15 years before most cars are able to avoid stationary trailers, hence the need for improved crash protection today. The mechanical failure: outdated safety regulations costing lives When both a driver and vehicle ADAS systems fail to detect a trailer and avoid a

collision, it is then the role of the trailer’s Rear Under-run Protection System (RUPS) to prevent a potentially fatal type of collision where the car slides beneath the trailer structure, known as a rear under-run. To evaluate physical guard strength, Euro NCAP and its international partners in Germany, the UK, Sweden and the US took a popular passenger car that carries a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating and subjected it to crash testing into the rear of trailers with different RUPS solutions. In the UK and Germany, it was tested using trailers built to

SAFETY | 97

Europe’s latest mandatory standard, UN ECE R58.03 (enforced since 2022). In the US, it was tested using trailers that meet the voluntary IIHS TOUGHGUARD standard. To perform the crash testing, the cars’ ADAS systems were deactivated. Two different commonly used trailers were selected, both fitted with the regulated rear under-run protection system designed to protect car occupants when a car runs into the back of the trailer. The outcomes were

severe. In a 56 km/h (35 mph) passenger-side 30 per cent frontal offset crash performed at HORIBA MIRA, the guard fitted by trailer manufacturer Schmitz Cargobull offered little structural resistance. The trailer bed sliced directly through the passenger compartment, tearing the side out of the vehicle structure, and inflicting fatal head and neck injuries to the crash test dummy. In a subsequent 75 per cent frontal-rear impact conducted at the same speed by Germany’s ADAC, the Krone Trailer’s rear underrun bar failed, and the test car’s occupant compartment was destroyed, resulting in no protection for the driver or passenger. Both crash tests showed that the

high-performing crash structure of the car could not deform and protect the occupants as designed due to the poor impact resistance of the rear underrun protection structure. This reveals that the current R58.03 European regulation could be improved significantly and is currently not fit for purpose. The proven US solution A viable engineering solution that would help prevent such crashes occurring already exists. When the same make and model of Euro NCAP’s five-star car was subjected to the same 56 km/h (35 mph) offset impact against a trailer built to the voluntary IIHS TOUGHGUARD standard in the US, the guard allowed the car’s safety structure to deform and protect the occupants as designed. Since its introduction to the US market, in 2017, it is estimated that 70 per cent of the latest trailers on the road are now fitted with TOUGHGUARDrated rear underrun devices. In the EU and UK, meeting this life-saving standard requires adding reinforcement to the trailer. Euro NCAP is calling for legislation change Following its findings, Euro NCAP calls on EU and UK legislators to implement changes to the R58.03 legislation, which would mirror those of the US IIHS TOUGHGUARD voluntary standard.

Furthermore, Euro NCAP urges trailer manufacturers to proactively introduce voluntary upgrades and retrofit solutions for existing fleets that could save lives. Euro NCAP also strongly encourages truck fleet operators to request trailer manufacturers to install retrofit solutions for existing trailer structures to replace the thousands of inadequate, legacy guards currently operating on roads throughout the EU and UK. At the inaugural briefing at the RTX Expo at the NAEC, Stoneleigh, England, Matthew Avery, Director of Strategic Development Euro NCAP stated: “International research has revealed the devastating flaws of the rear safety guards fitted to the hundreds of thousands of trailers and trucks operating throughout Europe and the UK. This is grave cause for concern. We have spent decades improving the safety of passenger vehicles, but those structures and restraint systems are rendered inadequate in the event of a trailer rear underrun, which is why we are seeing such a high fatality rate associated with this type of accident. And that is unacceptable. The legislation behind Europe’s truck and trailer safety needs to be updated as a matter of urgency to help prevent this type of impact that can prove potentially fatal. The good news is that the template already exists in the US with the IIHS voluntary TOUGHGUARD standard; the sooner the rear impact guards on Europe’s and UK’s trucks and trailers are updated, the better so future lives can be saved.” Text: Jarlath Sweeney - editor@fleet.ie www.fleet.ie

PLUS and combines lightweight construction and optimal load distribution into a tailor-made solution for electric heavy-duty transport. For temperature controlled vehicles, the COOL LITESHELL refrigerated trailer from Kögel sets new standards, offering an efficient combination of lightweight construction, reliability, and sustainability, assuring safe transport of sensitive and perishable goods, while maintaining economical operation. Increasing regulatory requirements, digital logistics chains, and the growing demand for just-in-time fresh food logistics are driving the need for high-performance and resource-efficient refrigerated vehicles. KÖGEL tipper trucks rely on the success factor of lightness and impress with a high ratio of tare weight to payload. Despite its low weight, the tipper range offer maximum stability thanks to its robust chassis made of highstrength fine-grained steel and a wide, deep-lying body that ensures excellent load-bearing capacity.

Award-winning too! Kässbohrer has been honoured at least seven times by the Trailer Innovation Awards and has been among the trophy winners in the International Trailer Awards in recent years. On this occasion it was successful with its Modular Floor Systems (K.MFS), in the component category. This is a modular flooring architecture for low-bed trailers with interchangeable hardwood, steel-grid and rubber floor sections, allowing one trailer to maximise heavy duty load factor. The SSL 33 Zero Emission Cement Silo in the Body category has been designed from the ground up for e-truck compatibility. Meeting all regulation requirements, the compact 7.650 mm length, 33 m3 cement silo presents an onboard e-compressor for total zero emission operations. Also featured was Kässbohrer’s Next Generation Curtainsider, K.SCS NG X+, which delivers enhanced stability and load distribution through its highstrength special steel chassis and robust upper structure, and is engineered to resist torsion, buckling and lateral forces. Its lightweight roof components, sliding pillars and roof-lifting system simplify loading, while advanced anti-deflection features enable reliable train loading and the sliding bumper minimises damage during ferry operations.

The system is robust and there is a camera in the cab to allow for accuracy when reversing. It can be retrofitted and trailers can be configured to operate automatically or manually. Inevitably all trailer connections will be undertaken this way. Combilift Carrier-Transicold New solutions designed to help refrigerated transport fleets accelerate electrification, reduce emissions and improve operational efficiency were demonstrated by Carrier Transicold. Among the talking points were the recently launched [R]eCool battery system, new Lynx Fleet digital capabilities, advances in A2L refrigerant technology and a new digital solution to support service needs. “At Carrier Transicold, we believe the best innovation keeps generating value for our customers long after the initial investment,” said Victor Calvo, Vice President & General Manager, International Truck Trailer, Carrier Transicold. “That conviction runs through everything we’re showcasing at IAA Transportation, from electrification solutions built to last across a fleet’s lifecycle to our advances in A2L refrigerants. Sustainability and performance go hand in hand, creating long lasting value.”

A day in the Life at Travescaut with Faymonville MAX trailers “We save one hour per transport” The tracked excavator makes one final pass across the site before heading down the bumpy access road. The last clumps of earth are quickly cleared from the undercarriage as the MultiMAX semi-trailer is already waiting. The experienced duo at Belgian water treatment specialists Travescaut take care of both machines: Nick steers the 37-tonne unit, while Antoine lowers the ramps of the trailer. The task is completed: a stormwater retention basin has been cleaned in order to restore its original water storage capacity. The duo is ready to move on. At Travescaut (srl), everything revolves around water: excavation work, bank maintenance, and dredging of ponds. “We’re always where it’s muddy,” Antoine says as he adjusts the loading platform of the MultiMAX within seconds using its hydraulic function. “Perfect, that’s it,“ he adds as the 3.45-metre-wide tracked machine approaches. Slowly, it climbs the ramps, and at the end the excavator arm is carefully positioned into the trough. Antoine then secures

FLEETTRAILER&BODYBUILDER | AUTUMN 26

all lashing chains one by one before the journey continues. All destinations within reach The new MultiMAX semi-trailer impressed him from day one. “Working with it is just fantastic – no comparison to what we had before,“ he said while briefly glancing into the mirror. “The hydraulic steering is outstanding. And the big advantage: Nick, as escort driver, can position himself at the rear, where I can no longer see everything myself.“ The good weather encourages residents in the villages along the route to step outside. Many café terraces are already busy at lunchtime. The passing combination draws attention, as the transport appears unusual and far from an everyday sight. “We’re often on narrow roads or difficult sections – without hydraulic forced steering, you simply wouldn’t get through. The lift axle also helps significantly with manoeuvring when full payload isn’t required,“ Antoine explains, highlighting another

advantage that proves its value time and again. After around 90 minutes on the road, the destination is reached: Frasneslez-Anvaing, nestled between meadows and floodplains. Hydraulic widening as a key advantage Unloading takes place in a valley hollow. Hidden behind trees lies the next job site, a quarry. As so often, unloading is carried out by reversing into position. ‘As in almost all our projects“, says company director Pierre Delabassee, watching his team perform the final manoeuvre. He too has been impressed by the vehicle from the very beginning – especially because the hydraulic widening also has a measurable impact on the numbers. “Compared to the classic method with wooden beams, we easily save one hour per transport. That’s a huge gain in time, a concrete cost reduction, and at the same time safer than working with wooden beams.“ *Ashbourne Truck Centre, Ashbourne, County Meath is the main sales and service agent for Faymonville & MAX trailers for Ireland.
