Welcome to our new Gator Tales First a big “thank you” for the years of service to Joice Smith. May she enjoy her retirement and endeavors.

Secondly, this section of the front page will be dedicated to maybe a monthly event or happening; or something of special interest.

But for this month we just want to reiterate that this is your newsletter. Please feel free to submit articles of interest, ask questions or otherwise add something fun.

This is my first undertaking of something of this nature, I’m sure mistakes will happen, so please be kind. I appreciate the support staff I have and we will continue to bring you a fun and newsworthy “Gator Tales.” And again, please feel free to drop off any contributions in the little red box outside my front door.

A Message from the President . . .. .

Dear Friends and Neighbors, Hello, hope this finds all well with everyone. I cannot believe we are into August already. Before we know it fall will be here and some cooler temperatures.

As of the time I am writing this letter we are still in Phase 2 of the reopening of our state. With this step in our reopening we can all see that the infection rate has gone to the highest levels we have seen in Florida since the inception of this pandemic. So, at this time the board has decided to keep everything the same for the month of August.

Clark has informed me that he and Joice will be giving up Bingo Food. I would like to take this opportunity to thank both for their dedicated service to our community. With that in mind we will need some volunteers to help with Bingo food, whenever that time comes. Currently I have two teams of three to help one night a month. We are looking for at least two more teams of three for the other two nights of the month. We would like to have at least 4 teams to enable us to only work one night a month. This is an income to our HOA that helps us with all our activities, so please consider volunteering one time per month. Please contact any board member if you are interested in helping or have any questions regarding what is involved.

I know this has been exceedingly difficult for everyone to be cooped up in your house and not being able to attend activities, but it is for all our safety and I believe we will get back to normal. Please remain vigilant in taking every precaution to remain healthy. Please be safe everyone!!!

SAYING GOODBYE TO A PET WITHOUT FEELING GUILTY

It is likely to be one of the most difficult decisions a person will ever make. How do you know when it is selfishness that stops you from letting a pet go when that would be the most compassionate course of action? Much as we would love all our animals to die quietly in their sleep it is rarely that easy. Your veterinarian may be able to tell you when the time has arrived, but ultimately, you need to make the decision.

The following signs may help to determine if your pet is no longer enjoying good quality of life: • Experiencing chronic pain that cannot be controlled with medication, • Has frequent vomiting or diarrhea causing dehydration and/or significant weight loss, • Has stopped eating or will only eat if force fed, • Is incontinent, • Has lost interest in all or most normal activities, • Cannot stand on his own or falls when walking, • Has chronic, labored breathing.

Once the decision is made, your veterinarian will explain the euthanasia procedure which usually includes a sedative being administered first to relax the animal prior to the final injection which ends life. The final decision will be dealing with the pet’s remains – cremation or burial.

Grieving the loss of a beloved pet can only be handled by whatever means the owner finds comfort. For those who have never known the love of a pet, have some compassion and understanding for those who have.

Meet the neighbors

Nancy also worked for Bank of America in the human resource dept. Retiring in 1996.

For over 50 years they had a love of square, round, and line dancing, traveling to various dancing events.

Andy and Nancy Belski 208 Glen Este Ct. residents since 2005.

Andy and Nancy were married in May of 1956 and have celebrated 64 years of marriage. Their family includes 3 children, 2 boys and 1 girl and 5 grandchildren then last but not least their dog Trixie.

The first years of their marriage they lived in PA. Next move was to the DC area where they lived for approx. 40 years.

After retirement they then moved to Kissimmee to be closer to Nancy’s brother Cliff.

They meet Don and Ruth Ives square dancing and who introduced them to Lake Hammock Village. After looking at other communities, LHV became their home.

Andy has a degree in accounting and worked as a technical writer in the marketing and advertising fields. He retired in 1996 and moved from the hustle bustle of the DC area. When he arrived in FL, he drove bus at Walt Disney World.

Nancy worked for The Boy Scouts of America as an administrative assistant.

Their other love is camping, which allowed them to join a caravan (of square dancers) out west to attend the “National Convention of Square Dancers”.

While in the area they were able to see Mt Rushmore, Yellow Stone, and other national parks. Most recently they spend two months of the summer camping in Charlottesville, VA being able to spend time with their family.

Nancy is addicted to adult coloring and recently obtained an organ and is getting re-acquainted with the keyboard. You can see Nancy enjoying water aerobics at the pool. Andy is a compulsive reader, visits libraries and sharing books with friends.

He also enjoys taking care of their flowers.

As for sports after spending 40 years in the DC area the Washington (formally) Redskins is their team.

Meet our neighbors

being involved in children’s ministry and music. Sue retired from Animal Rescue where they obtained Bella.

Travel is on their “bucket list” wanting to visit Israel, the Holy Lands, and drive the Pacific Coast Highway. They plan on just enjoying retirement and each other.

Both are Disney fans and have taken 9 Disney cruises and are fans of any Philadelphia sport team.

Dave and Sue Carpenter, 44 Sargent Street moved to Lake Hammock Village in 2019, relocating from southern New Jersey. They were married August 28, 1976; and have one daughter Summer (born on the first day of summer) She is married and lives in Winter Haven with their two “grand dogs”.

After retiring they followed their daughter to Florida and discovered Lake Hammock Village while at Checkers. Drawn to LHV by its quaint, small, and comfortable feel decided LHV would become the Florida home. The other resident in their home is the beloved Bella a Yorkie-Poo. Dave studied at a Bible College and Trade School. He was a licensed steam plant engineer for 40 yrs with the state of New Jersey retiring in 2019. His true calling was to the ministry and was a Pastor for 30 years. He also was a Christian drug and alcohol counselor for 10 years retiring in 2015.

Sue went to Philadelphia as a volunteer for “Teen Challenge” ministering in the projects. This is where Dave and Sue met.

Sue was an Administrative Assistant for several non-profits while being busy with obligations as a pastor’s wife. She enjoyed

Hobbies for Dave include collecting vinyl records and woodworking projects. Sue enjoys painting, playing the piano and baking.

Both enjoy card games and having noon time picnics at the lake.

They are available to be “Prayer Partners” with anyone in the park, requesting.

“Ask us Anything!”

We are interested in starting a new monthly column called “Ask us Anything!” We invite you to submit questions to us and we will provide a response. Hopefully, we will be able to give you the information or explanation you need and, in the process, help others who have the same question, while having a bit of fun doing this. “Anything” means anything, except, of course, politics! Have you wondered about insurance for your golf cart? What is the best restaurant for seafood? Can I get discounts on my car insurance? Do you have questions about Medicare or Medicare Advantage Plans? (Who doesn’t?). Where is the best place to service your auto? Why is traffic so bad at the Route 27 entrance to LHV? How are water rates figured and by whom?

Who fixes golf carts? These are just a few ideas.

In order to get things started, here is a hypothetical question:

ARE THERE CAR INSURANCE DISCOUNTS OR SAVINGS AVAILABLE TO ME? ANSWER: There are a number of discounts and savings opportunities available and these vary depending on the company you have. In Florida, auto insurance is written for six month periods, not a full year as in some states. This means that it comes up quickly for renewal and the tendency is to just renew the policy as long as the rate is not going up substantially and you are somewhat satisfied.

We recommend you not renew your insurance without looking at it and possibly pricing some other options. Sometimes it seems that every other ad on TV is for auto insurance (the ‘other’ is for miracle prescription drugs). The auto insurance industry is super competitive, and this can lead to obtaining much better rates or more discounts by changing insurance companies.

When it comes to car insurance loyalty doesn’t pay, unless it helps get you a discount. Don’t be afraid to change companies if you can save money. If you are like me, pricing auto insurance with several different companies is more painful than getting a root canal from a dentist.

However, unlike a root canal, pricing the insurance can sometimes save you big money.

Recommendation number one is to ask questions and compare answers. If you have an agent, start there. Contact him or her a month before the six month period expires. Be sure to tell him or her

that you are considering other companies and ask them to go over your policy with you. Be sure to ask what discounts you are receiving right now. Remind them that you (hopefully) have another six month period without an at fault accident and ask for a better rate and more discounts based on your excellent driving record.

Some agents represent more than one company and will gladly give you quotes. Remember, agents are there to sell and make money. You are there because you need insurance and want to pay as little as possible. The agent is not your buddy. He or she listens to lots of people every day, so any questions you ask are not new to him/her. An agent wants to keep your business.

Be sure to remind him / her in a polite way that you are getting quotes from other companies too, so they understand that they must be competitive. A few questions to ask: o

Amount of the policy. For an average policy with 25,000/50,000 coverage, be sure the agent is quoting you the policy you want. A conversation about this might be good. Do you need a 25/50 policy? You may need a smaller amount – or a larger one. Everyone is different.

Ask about ‘Medical Payments’ coverage.

Most policies have this and, if you have medical coverage from Medicare or other, you may not need coverage more than the minimum required. Again, ask the agent.

If you have an old vehicle or a ‘clunker,’ are you paying for collision coverage that you might not need? For example, are you

paying $ 100 per period for this coverage, or $ 200 per year for an old vehicle that might be worth $ 500? Think about dropping this coverage. You may be in a situation in which you would get rid of the ‘clunker’ if you had an accident. Also, payment of a claim is based on book value of the vehicle. For example, the book value of a 1995 vehicle is probably minimal. You may be able to save a good amount by dropping it. Again, ask the agent.

Let’s look at discounts. A company such as GEICO builds in discounts for: o o o o o o

Passive Restraints ‘Five Year Good Driver’ Multi-car discount Discount if you have auto and home insurance with the company Anti-Lock Brakes Seatbelt Discount

Some companies (Progressive & Allstate may) give discounts for: o o o

High Credit Score College Degree College Alumni Association membership

Progressive & Allstate give discounts for: o o

Allstate – using a device called ‘Drivewise’ Progressive – using a device called ‘Snapshot’

Both of these devices are similar. They are voluntary, easily installed under your dashboard, and monitor your driving, measuring things like, excess speed, riding the brakes, quick stopping, etc., and they automatically send results directly back to the company. There are pros and cons to using these. Best result is that you will get a discount at time you renew. Worst case is that the device shows you are a poor driver and your rate can go up! In the past, the Progressive devices were annoying, making sounds every time you made a quick stop, etc.

Recommendation – ask your agent. It may be

worth a try and you can stop using them at any time.

Some companies offer a discount for taking a ‘Defensive Driving’ course. We know that GEICO offers this. A friend reported that he signed up and took the course online. The course consists of about six sections. You must read the sections and then take a quiz on each section. After completing the course you must take a final quiz.

The course cost the person $ 12.50. Based on a six month rate of about $ 800 (for two vehicles), the savings for one person were $ 33.50. If both people in a household complete the course the discount would be double that or about $ 67, approaching 10% of your premium. Better news is that these discounts are good for three years with GEICO. So, for an investment of $ 12.50 (some courses cost more) you could get a discount over three years!

Finally, be sure to check with GEICO for an ‘instant discount’ of 15% right now called ‘The GEICO Giveback’ as a result of the COVID 19 situation. If you have GEICO and renew, you will get this discount.

Other companies may also be offering discounts like this so, once again, ask your agent!

We hope this has answered some of your questions and that you are able to take advantage of some of these discounts!

We know this article was long, however, if you save some money it was worth the read.

Food for Thought…………

This new monthly column is an attempt to provide some relief for quiet thought and reflection during these difficult times. It encourages you to take a time out for a few minutes, look at something different, and reflect on life in general. The following poem comes to mind every time I head down to Lake Hammock on our trails. The poet, Robert Frost, was born in 1874 and published this poem in 1916. Over a hundred year ago Frost took the time to share many of the things that we all feel about life in general. This poem can be read on many different levels. In our lives it is often impossible to know where a decision may lead. Sometimes, these choices can be life changing.

However, when faced with a choice, one must make a quick decision as to which road he/she will take. We have all made these decisions and, as we make our way to beautiful Lake Hammock, we can take a few moments of our precious time to reflect on our choices and their outcomes before returning to our daily lives and regular routines.

The Road Not Taken

News from The HOA Emergency Preparedness Team August 2020 Due to the COVID 19 crisis the Team has not been able to meet in person. However, we have continued to stay in touch and distribute information as we obtain it. Thanks to all our members! It is a very dedicated group of people and it is an honor to work with them.

As we begin August, we are now into the third month of hurricane season. So far, we have had no serious threats. However, August and September are the highest risk months for hurricanes, so be sure to watch the weather channels and be alert for changes in weather patterns that may affect us. And, of course, we urge you to prepare, take precautions, and consider what you would do in the event a storm is coming towards us. Please think about whether you would stay here or evacuate. If you choose to evacuate, where would you go?

Many of you have families or friends to help you. Many do not. The Emergency Preparedness Team has provided all residents with Information packets containing shelter maps and other helpful information. The Team is here to help in any way. Just ask one of us.

As you plan your shopping, keep in mind that during the 2017 storm, we were without electricity for quite some time and this could happen again. We know that these articles are repetitious, but the information is important and could help you stay safe. As we mentioned last month:         



Keep your gas tanks full. When a storm hits there are long lines and gas shortages, so prepare now.

Same with your propane tanks. You may need your grill for cooking if electricity goes out again.

Stock up on bottled water.

Flashlights and batteries disappear quickly when a storm is coming, so buy them now. As of this week, all stores had good supplies.

Canned goods and non-perishable items will also be hard to find. So, stock up on tuna fish, peanut butter, and canned goods just in case. NOW is the time.

Having a couple of tarps around is a good idea as they can be used in many emergency situations.

Remember that the Team is here to help with removing loose items when a storm is coming. Again, ask for help from any of us.

Think about where you would go if you needed to evacuate. Look at the shelter map. If you have pets, there are options, but you need to at least have some idea because when a storm is coming all h*** breaks loose!

Recommendation: Contact a Team Member for help. Don’t wait! For those with oxygen issues, there are residents with generators who might help you in the event electricity goes out. NOW is the time to think about these things. Call a Team member with questions or to help.
