Hello, hope this finds all well with everyone. Hard to believe it is June already, time sure is flying by. We already have experienced the heat of the summer months. Please everyone, remember to keep yourself hydrated during the heat of the day.

As of the time I am writing this letter we are in Phase 1 of the reopening of our state. The management has opened the pool and clubhouse with social distancing in place. We have been very lucky in our park that no one has had the Coronavirus, that is due to the measures we all put in place at the start of this pandemic and also a credit to our residents who also took precautions when leaving the park.

The board will meet sometime in June to discuss our options for the balance of the year. I will post in next month’s newsletter what was discussed. As of this time, there will be no HOA sponsored events for the month of June. According to the Governor’s outline of the specific Phases – even when we reach Phase 2 of the reopening, it will still be hard to hold any functions while maintaining the social distancing requirements.

I know this has been very difficult for everyone to be cooped up in your house and not being able to attend activities but it is for all of our safety and I believe we will get back to normal. Please remain vigilant in taking every precaution to remain healthy. Please be safe everyone!!!

If you see me out, feel free to stop me with any suggestions, comments or just to say hello.

All Residents: We recognize our obligation to all residents to maintain the high quality of your community and protect your investment by enforcing the guidelines.

It saddens me that again we must talk about residents not picking up their pet waste and allowing them to do their business on someone else’s lawn! Our residents should not have to post signs in their yards letting other’s know that it is not alright to let your pet dump on someone else’s property other than your own. We all need to respect one another’s property, so please cease from allowing your pets to poop on other’s property, and also remember to always pick up their waste, even on the trails in the woods.

News from The HOA Emergency Preparedness Team Coming our way…. on a Collision Course….

COVID-19

Get ready everyone, as we prepare for two powerful forces to intersect at Lake Hammock Village! As we know, ‘Hurricane Season’ begins in June and runs for about six months. This year things are complicated by the COVID-19 crisis. Even in the best-case scenario, our daily lives have changed in many ways and preparation for this season is a real challenge for all of us.

Preparation is a year-round task, but in reality, most of us don’t pay much attention until we see ‘Hurricane Season’ approaching. That time is now here! It is time to get serious about preparing for the upcoming season.

The Polk County Emergency Management Office has informed us of a significant change for 2020. Through last year, the recommendation was that people plan to have Three Days of Supplies available at any time. This has now been changed to Seven Days of Supplies available at any time, more than two times the old amount. So, as you plan and shop, be sure to keep this in mind.

Before going on, I want to recognize and thank Jerri Kaplan, an Emergency Services Planner for the Polk County Emergency Management Office. Over the past two years Jerri has been our ‘GO TO’ person there. Last year she spoke at our June HOA / Emergency Preparedness meeting and has been there for questions, resources, etc. She recently provided us with shelter maps (just printed!) and other materials. We can’t thank her enough for all her ongoing assistance and support.

To begin on a positive note, during this COVID-19 situation stores have continued to have adequate food supplies and plenty of bottled water and non-perishable items in stock. As we get into the hurricane season, this will change, and you will begin to see certain items become scarce. Remember:



Bottled water is an important item to stock up on, along with canned foods, non-perishables, peanut butter, etc.



Batteries are essential if we lose power as we did in 2017. Dollar Tree, Lowes, WalMart, and other places still have lots of batteries. Now is the time to buy them!



Gasoline is cheap and plentiful. Be sure to keep your gas tanks filled up, as shortages always occur when a storm is heading towards us, and you never know when you may need to leave in a hurry.



Propane tanks – same thing as gasoline. If electricity goes out, as it did in 2017, we will be looking to our grills for cooking. So be sure to fill your propane tanks.



In our last hurricane situation in 2017 many found that it was helpful to have a tarp or a couple of them available for emergencies to plug up leaks as they develop. The LHV Team recommends this.



Evacuation planning is very important. Please give this some thought and consider your options, which are staying here, going to a shelter, or evacuating to a hotel or somewhere safe. The LHV Emergency Preparedness Team has received a supply of shelter maps. These will be distributed soon, along with other materials. This year the County has faced an unprecedented challenge incorporating social distancing into shelter planning.



In 2017 the Team had put together a Hotel Listing that listed local hotels and motels including some that are pet friendly. This listing has not been updated due to lack of volunteers, but still may provide helpful information and is available by e-mail.

LHV Zones and Volunteers: Last year the Emergency Preparedness Team developed a ‘ZONE MAP’ of LHV with eight zones. Copies of this have been printed here and distributed throughout LHV. We are in the process of updating this information for 2020, which is more difficult this year due to the fact we have not been able to meet due to ‘social distancing’ issues. The map in this issue is current. There may be some changes, but we expect they will be minor.

Please look at this map and see what Zone you are in. Each Zone lists a Coordinator. The goal is to have a ‘GO TO PERSON’ available in each Zone to coordinate help for any residents who need it. We have volunteers in each Zone to assist the Coordinators and are trying to assign additional volunteers to help. See ‘2020 ZONE MAP.’ And please, call any of us if you have questions or concerns, even if you think the issue is a minor one. In the past we have found that if you have a question, it is likely that others do too, so we encourage you to call.

Distribution of Shelter Maps & Other Information: The Team will be reviewing our current materials to determine if there are items we need to have printed. If so, we will likely do this at Staples since our printer (copier in the clubhouse) is not available right now.

We hope to distribute information by the first week in June. We will try to update you through the LHV / Facebook pages.

Special Needs Status: Those residents with chronic illnesses or other limitations may qualify for Polk Emergency Special Needs Program. See https://polk-county.net/emergency-management/special-needs. This includes the elderly, and those without transportation who may require extra attention in order to stay safe during a disaster. Polk County has programs in place to help these residents prepare and find safe shelter. There are Special Needs Shelters available, and transportation. The website lists Special Needs Eligibility as: Polk residents are eligible at any age, who meet the any following conditions:

Activities of daily living are restricted by immobility that their basic needs must be met by others.

Needs assistance with the administration of their medications.

Requires dressing changes because of moderate/copious drainage (ulcers, fistulas) Needs assistance with ostomy management, indwelling catheters (n/g tube, colostomy bags, etc.).

Requires daily assessment of medical condition by professional nursing personnel. (cardiac, diabetic).

Cardiac or respiratory conditions requiring electrical medical equipment - oxygen 3 liters or less, apnea monitors, nebulizers etc.

All others deemed necessary by triage nurse.

Persons who require evaluation and possible health care facility placement: • • • • • •

Persons in sudden acute medical or emergency condition.

Oxygen dependent persons requiring oxygen 4 liter flow and higher.

Bedridden persons and persons requiring a hospital type bed who, for medical reasons, cannot use cots for emergency bedding, and persons requiring Hoyer lift transfers.

Persons require continuous air conditioning for medical reasons.

Persons do not possess functional ambulation capability.

High risk pregnancy within four weeks of estimated date of delivery or in active labor. Normal pregnancy should get instructions from their obstetrician.

The Team is available to assist anyone who would like to file for Special Needs Status. We can help with the application process as we have the past two years. If you have questions or know someone who needs help, please let us know.

Hurricane Lights Available to New Residents and Others Who Have Not Received One: As mentioned last month, the Team still has a number of ‘Hurricane Lights’ available (free of charge, of course, batteries included), donated last year by Spectrum Bay News 9. These small battery-operated lights have three settings and are very useful around the house.
