A Message from the President Dear Friends and Neighbors, Hello to all, these cool temperatures sure are a nice change for us to enjoy. It is nice to be able to open the house and enjoy the cool evenings.

By the time you read this, Christmas and New Years have come and gone. I hope you had a Merry Christmas while visiting your families or celebrating here in Florida. May all of your new year,s resolutions be successful.

Jananury 21, 2020 will be our annual meeting where we will be voting on our new Board members and our 2020 Budget. You also need to have your 2020 dues paid by January 11, 2020, in order to vote. The people running for the Board are: Terry Hofer, Joyce Middleton, Matt Rice, Jerry Sibila. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have of the Candidates if you see us out and about.

We will be announcing the Volunteer of the year and then present a plaque and a crisp $100.00 bill to the winner. Please plan on attending and supporting our new board.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Board Members and all of Lake Hammock residents who have supported me this past year!

Lake Hammock Village Sewing group had a great sewing day in December making pillowcases for hospitalized children. We had so much fun we decided to do it again Tuesday, January 7th, starting at 1:00 PM in the clubhouse. A few sewers and residents contributed fabric or money for fabric to help our cause of making useful things for charity while we build our sewing skills. We will also talk about what our next project will be and what we can name our group. Anyone who has questions or is interested in sharing ideas or resources, can contact Shirley Smith @ (708) 8283557 by voicemail or text.

CHRISTMAS CAROLING AND CAMPFIRE 2019 Thank you, Debbie and Rick Bialecki, for putting together and hosting our first Caroling event at the Pavilion. And to all of you that made all the wonderful cookies and goodies a big thank you.

HISTORY OF THE TOURNAMENT OF ROSES PARADE

A football game was added in 1902, the first being played by Stanford and the University of Michigan. When Stanford suffered a crushing loss in that initial game, the football portion of the day's activities were cancelled but eventually returned in 1916. A new stadium for the event was built seven years later and quickly earned the nickname "The Rose Bowl." The game has sold out every year since 1947!

Today, the Rose Parade and all the events organized around it draw tens of thousands to the Pasadena area and literally millions sit in front of the television to enjoy state-ofthe-art floats with high-tech animation, covered with flowers from around the world.

It's a fascinating and breathtaking sight.

The Tournament of Roses Parade was founded in 1890, staged and sponsored by Pasadena's recently formed Valley Hunt Club. The main idea behind the parade was for these new Californians to showcase their state's mild winter weather, a place where flowers bloomed all year long, in stark contrast to the places they left in the East and Midwest.

Before long, this small rose-themed festival expanded to include motorized floats that awed parade watchers, as well as equestrians and local school and community-based marching bands. Games were held in the town park and the whole city turned out for the event. In just a few years, the festival and parade had already gained national attention, with photos and articles about the parade appearing in large East Coast newspapers like the New York Times. The event's popularity resulted in the formation of a new Tournament of Roses Association in 1895, the same organization that still handles the organization of the parade today.

This is a New Year’s tradition for a lot of people, who either live in Southern California or who will watch it on TV. I was fortunate enough to be able to experience this in person while I lived in Southern California, and let me tell you something, it is the most magnificent parade you will ever see. We watch it every year on TV since we have moved. It is really something to see.

Preparedness: An Ongoing Process for 2020! by The HOA Emergency Preparedness Team

The dreaded hurricane season is finally over! It is time to relax for the holidays with family and friends. It is also time to enjoy shopping for bargains, eating good food, watching lots of football or your favorite holiday movies, and looking forward to 2020. Relax, have fun, and work on keeping those promises you made to yourself to improve in 2020. While enjoying yourself, keep in mind that preparation for emergencies is a yearround process.

The Emergency Preparedness Team was formed through the HOA in 2018 for the following purpose:

To help each other, to help keep our residents safe, and to help everyone be better prepared in case of an emergency.

Remember, this is YOUR Team, organized for the sole purpose of helping YOU. In 2019 we were fortunate to avoid any direct hurricanes. Hurricane Dorian threatened us, but thankfully took a different course and we were able to avoid most of its effects. As we reported last month, the HOA Emergency Preparedness Team is already plotting a course of action for 2020. We are starting early to put together a program to keep everyone informed and safe in 2020. The Team plans to meet after the new year and everyone is invited. We will announce this in Gator Tales or through Facebook and word of mouth.

The Team would like to encourage you to approach 2020 in the same way and start planning and preparing now. It is never too early to begin. We have six or seven months until our next hurricane season (June to November). We KNOW the storms will be coming. We just do not know when they will arrive or how bad they will be. Would it make sense to take $ 5.00 every time you shop and buy some batteries or other items? Some have told us that they stock up on batteries at Dollar Tree. Right now, the shelves are full at Walmart and other stores. When a storm is heading our way, the shelves are suddenly empty! Flashlights, canned goods, water, and other items would also be helpful to store away for the inevitable storm season.

In the following months the Team plans to continue its monthly articles in Gator Tales. We thank all those associated with Gator Tales for their support. Our articles will try to cover different aspects of preparation. If anyone has any suggestions, please contact one of the members listed below.

The Team is recruiting new members for 2020 to complement our current group. There is no time requirement.

Everyone chooses how much time he or she can devote to the Team and what they would like to do. We need help in many different areas, such as:  Zone Volunteers, helping people in a specific zone  Checking in on the needs of the sick and handicapped and seeing if the Team can help in some way, such as helping with lawn items, etc.  Helping people learn about and sign up for the Polk County Special Needs Program.  Researching and putting together hotel information to assist people in their evacuation decisions. Lists need to be updated regularly.  Help copying and distributing materials to residents.  Possibly acting as a liaison to post information on LHV Facebook.  There are lots of possibilities and this list is not limited. If you have other ideas, let us know.

EVERYONE is welcome to participate. If you are interested or have questions, see the list of members at the end of this article and contact any of us.
