Dear Friends and Neighbors, Hello to all of you, and these cool tempetures sure are a nice change for us to enjoy. It is nice to be able to open the house and enjoy the cool evenings.

I would also like to welcome back all our northern friends.

It is hard to believe the Holidays are upon us. Let’s all take a minute and give thanks for all we have. Please be safe in all your travels during the Hoilday’s.

Hope everyone is working on idea’s for decorating your golf carts. Shelly and I look forward to the Golf Cart Parades here in the park.

I would like to discuss the front gate. I did discuss this at the HOA Meeting, but would like to put it in News letter for everyone to see. There has been a lot of discussion held about the security here in the park. The Gates open at 9am and close at 5pm. During the time the gate is closed we must use our openers or your gate code given to you by the front office. I have observed numerous delivery individules pulling up to the gate and punching a code in and entering the park. We should never give that code to anyone. That code was given for you to use as you enter the park during times that the gate is closed. We all complain about secrity in the park but in the same breath we give our secrity code to a person who doesn’t live in the park. I’m asking anyone who has shared there code with someone to visit the front office and get a new code for the gate. If you have a local number they can call you and you can open the gate from your phone. I know this is a sore subject with a lot of you but we as residents must do our part in correcting this problem. Thank you for helping.

Although our wonderfully paved roads seem like paths, they art not. Walkers, runners and dog walkers need to go AGAINST the TRAFFIC – FACING IT. That is – the left side of the road. You need to see oncoming cars, golf carts, and Santa’s sleigh. If you are driving a golf cart or bike, you have the same rules as a car. Stay to the right and go no more than a speedy 15mph. And Santa says, don’t forget to STOP at the stop signs.

Annual Christmas Golf Cart Parade Saturday, December 21st, 2019 Parade starts 6:00 PM HOSTED BY: Art and Wanda Stanley It's time to decorate those Golf Carts and get into the Christmas Spirit. Use your imagination and develop the most unique decorations that encompass the Christmas Spirit. We will be putting those carts on parade every night from 6:30 PM until? beginning December 15th (except for Monday December 16th (Bingo night).

On December 21st, we will have the final parade, starting from the clubhouse, culminating with judging, and prizes will be given for the best decorated cart. We encourage the community to come out and watch the parade and join us at the clubhouse on the 21st for cookies and hot chocolate. Everyone is invited to the clubhouse to judge the carts after the parade.

Boxing Day - the Day after Christmas!

Boxing Day takes place on December 26th and is only celebrated in a few countries; mainly ones historically connected to the UK (such as Canada, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand) and in many European countries. In Germany it is known as "Zweite Feiertag” (which means 'second celebration') and also “Zweiter Weihnachtsfeiertag” which translates as Boxing Day (although it doesn’t literally mean that)!

It was started in the UK about 800 years ago, during the Middle Ages. It was the day when the alms box, collection boxes for the poor often kept in churches, were traditionally opened so that the contents could be distributed to poor people. Some churches still open these boxes on Boxing Day. It might have been the Romans that first brought this type of collecting box to the UK, but they used them to collect money for the betting games which they played during their winter celebrations!

In Holland, some collection boxes were made out of a rough pottery called 'earthenware' and were shaped like pigs. Perhaps this is where we get the term 'Piggy Bank'!

It was also traditional that servants got the day off to celebrate Christmas with their families on Boxing Day. Before World War II, it was common for working people (such as milkmen and butchers) to travel round their delivery places and collect their Christmas box or tip.

This tradition has now mostly stopped and any Christmas tips, given to people such as postal workers and newspaper delivery children, are not normally given or collected on Boxing Day. Boxing Day has now become another public holiday in countries such as the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It is also the traditional day that Pantomimes started to play.

There are also often sports played on Boxing Day in the UK, especially horse racing and football matches! It's also when shops traditionally had big sales after Christmas in the UK (like Black Friday in the USA).

The 26th December is also St. Stephen's Day. Just to confuse things, there are two St. Stephens in history! The first St. Stephen is believed to have been a very early follower of Jesus and he is said to have been the first Christian Martyr (a person who dies for their religious beliefs). The Bible says that Stephen (who was a Jew) was stoned to death by some other Jews (who didn't believe in Jesus).

The second St. Stephen was a Missionary, in Sweden, in the 800s. He loved all animals but particularly horses (perhaps why there is traditionally horse racing on boxing day). He was also a martyr and was killed by pagans in Sweden. In Germany there was a tradition that horses would be ridden around the inside of the church during the St. Stephen's Day service!

St. Stephen's Day (or 'the feast of Stephen') is when the Carol 'Good King Wenceslas' is set.

It's about helping the poor - so it has a strong connection to Boxing Day.

The Christmas Pickle The tradition of the Christmas Pickle has got to be one of the strangest modern Christmas customs in that no one is quite sure why it exists at all!

In the 1880s Woolworth stores started selling glass ornaments imported from Germany and some were in the shape of various fruit and vegetables. It seems that pickles must have been among the selection!

Around the same time it was claimed that the Christmas Pickle was a very old German tradition and that the pickle was the last ornament hung on the Christmas tree and then the first child to find the pickle got an extra present.

However, the claim that it's an old German tradition seems to be a total myth! Not many people in Germany have even heard of the Christmas Pickle! (Similarly in Russia virtually no one knows the supposedly Russian story of Babushka!)

Some families now have the tradition of hanging the pickle on the tree, with the first person/child to find it getting a present. But it probably didn't start in Germany!

There are two other rather far-fetched stories linking the pickle to Christmas.

One features a fighter in the American Civil War who was born in Bavaria (an area of what is now Germany). He was a prisoner, and starving, he begged a guard for one last pickle before he died. The guard took pity on him and gave a pickle to him. The pickle

gave him the mental and physical strength to live on!

The other story is linked to St. Nicholas. It's a medieval tale of two Spanish boys traveling home from a boarding school for the holidays. When they stopped at an inn for the night, the evil innkeeper, killed the boys and put them in a pickle barrel. That evening, St. Nicholas stopped at the same inn, and found the boys in the barrel and miraculously bought them back to life!

There is an old legend about St. Nicholas rescuing boys from a barrel but the barrel was originally holding meat for pies - not pickles!

So it's most likely that an ornament salesmen, with a lot of spare pickles to sell, invented the legend of the Christmas Pickle!

The American city of Berrien Springs, MI (also known as the Christmas Pickle Capital of the World) has an annual pickle festival held during the early part of December.

Hurricane Season 2019 & Planning for 2020

by The HOA Emergency Preparedness Team By the time you see this article, hurricane season should be over. It ended unofficially on November 30th. At the time this article was written, there were no serious storms coming our way. Though the hurricane season runs from June to the end of November, the most dangerous months are usually August and September. At this point we can relax a bit, take a deep breath, and then begin planning for 2020.

In 2019 we had one close call, Hurricane Dorian, which threatened us, but then took a different course. We were able to avoid most of its effects. Our encounter with Dorian provided us with an opportunity to put into practice some of the things the Team has worked on over the past year.

As we stated in a previous article, the overall preparation for Dorian went quite well, but much more can be done. Thanks to the strong support of the HOA, the Team has developed and implemented a volunteer program utilizing volunteers in eight zones to help anyone in need. A Zone Map of LHV was included in last month’s issue of Gator Tales, along with a list of volunteers and coordinators. The Team has received positive feedback from residents, encouragement and support from the HOA, and support from management. The Team hopes to continue and expand its efforts in 2020.

The Team is recruiting new members for 2020 to complement our current group. There is no time requirement. Everyone chooses how much time he or she can devote to the Team and what they would like to do. We need help in many different areas, such as:  Zone Volunteers, helping people in a specific zone  Checking in on the needs of the sick and handicapped and seeing if the Team can help in some way, such as helping with lawn items, etc.  Helping people learn about and sign up for the Polk County Special Needs Program.  Researching and putting together hotel information to assist people in their evacuation decisions. Lists need to be updated regularly.  Help copying and distributing materials to residents.  Possibly acting as a liaison to post information on LHV Facebook.  There are lots of possibilities and this list is not limited. If you have other ideas, we would love to hear them!

EVERYONE is welcome to participate. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED – see the list of members at the end of this article and contact any of us.

The Team hopes to meet in late January to review our efforts in 2019 and plan for 2020. All are invited to attend this meeting which will be announced in Gator Tales.

As background, the Emergency Preparedness Team was formed through the HOA in 2018 for the following purpose: To help each other, to help keep our residents safe, and to help everyone be better prepared in case of an emergency.

Here are some general thoughts about activities and goals for 2020:  The Team plans to work closely with the HOA which has provided tremendous support and resources. The goals and objectives of the Team will be discussed with the HOA.  We hope to strengthen the Team by adding new members.  We plan to maintain and enhance our excellent relationship with Polk County Emergency Management.  We would like to begin a dialogue with the City of Haines City over resources available and the City’s role in helping us.  We hope to strengthen our Zone Volunteer Program by adding additional contacts in each zone.  The Team would like to plan a general meeting for early June. Last year we had Jerri Kaplan of Polk County Emergency Management present a video and answer any questions. In 2020, this meeting would also give us an opportunity to introduce Zone Coordinators and volunteers.  The Team plans to put together and distribute shelter maps and other literature to all residents, as we did in 2019.  We would like to continue our monthly presence in Gator Tales. We thank them for their ongoing support.  Develop a regular Social Media / Facebook plan to provide information to residents.

We are looking forward to working together in 2020 to help our friends and fellow residents.
