You’re probably just returning from places

like Michigan, Ohio, Pa, New England states and so many other states and all ready to bask in the mild temperatures and ready to send beachand-flip-flop photos to your neighbors back home shoveling snow. (smile) We missed all of you and we hope you are ready to begin your return and enjoy this beautiful Florida weather.

You will see some changes, new neighbors, old neighbors gone, but all in all we are still Southfork and just waiting for you to get back.

We have noticed that restaurants — are revving up for more customers now that you’re here.

Golf courses may be a little more crowded now

as you hit the links. Doctors soon will be seeing more patients because, obviously, this is where your favorite physicians are. Now the season is ready to start with all of you back and are you ready for Florida? hope so!

Southfork Women’s Club

Meeting starts at 10am, Oct 2, 2019

The September Women's Club meeting was scheduled to be an outing to IHOP for lunch. However, due to the looming threat of bad weather from hurricane "Dorian", the officers decided to play it safe and cancelled the outing.

So on to October's meeting. The officers and interim activity committee are planning a Halloween themed meeting. We are asking our members to put on their best Halloween costume and show up at the meeting on October 2nd at 10am. There will be a prize waiting for one of the costumes.

The regular meeting will take place followed by refreshments.

WOMEN’S CLUB ANNUAL BAZAAR It is that time of year already when the planning for the Annual Bazaar gets into full swing. This year it will be held on Saturday, November 16, from 9 AM to 1PM. Last year’s Bazaar was a huge success. With your support we earned a record amount to donate to various charities in the Dade City area.

I am asking for your help again this year so we can break that record!

Thank you to the many members of the Women’s club who have already stepped up to chair different areas of the Bazaar. We already have most of the craft tables filled. So far we have three new craft vendors this year. If you are interested in getting a table, please contact me or sign up in the clubhouse as soon as possible. I have a waiting list of vendors from outside, so the cutoff for residents to book a table is October 2.

The payment of $5 for your table needs to be paid by that date.

We will once again be having the basket raffle as that is very popular.

Ladies please start planning a theme for your baskets. There were 13 baskets donated last year, let’s try to fill a few more this year. Consider getting together with friends to fill one. I have a few empty baskets available at my house, or pick up one at a thrift shop.

We had many wonderful items donated last year to our first Silent Auction. We will be holding that again this year in the library. We are looking for donations of handcrafted items, or anything you have that is in excellent shape. We have a few people who have volunteered their time to go out into the community and solicit items and gift cards from local businesses. If you frequent a business that you think might be willing to donate something, please contact me to get a letter from the Women’s Club to present to them.

Your help in getting a wide variety of items will make this event a great success!

Donations can be dropped off at my house or brought to the Women’s Club meetings.

This event is free to everyone in our community, come join your friends and neighbors for a good time.

There are many people who walk with canes, are on scooters, people walking the dog or just out walking for the morning or evening for exercise.

Be cautious when you get to the corners and especially streets leading onto Brahman/Bronco Drive.

There are blind corners and please, just be careful so that no one gets hit or injured.

60 Year Anniversary

How Ironic that both couples have a 60 year wedding anniversary this year 2019. celebrated on Aug 1st, and Pete & Dixie celebrate on October 9th.

Just a little story about both Dixie and Phyllis. For all, both women graduated from the same high school in the same year. Both graduated from Brownsville Senior High school in May of 1957 in Brownsville, Pa..

Dixie and Pete moved to Southfork in year 2003 and Pat & Phyllis moved to Southfork in 2004. Both couples only live 2 doors away from each other on Mesquite Dr which is even more ironic.

By accident they met here in Southfork at the Southfork bingo in November of 2004. As Phyllis came in the door to bingo, she and her husband were invited to sit with the Mesquite Dr neighbors. Low and behold, Pete & Dixie were sitting there and the reminiscing the rest of night was awesome. So much in common and something which was amazing that both are from the same school.

Pete graduated the same year from a high school in Perryopolis, PA and Pat graduated in 1955 from St Vincent Desales High school in Lockport, NY. So to many more years of wedded bliss both couples look forward to many more.

Hi everyone, Weekly calls come in wanting to know if we now have recycling every Wednesday versus our twice a month pickups on the 1st & 3rd Wednesdays.

The answer is, (Yes), you can now place your recycling at curbside every Tuesday evening because they do pick up early between 5 & 6am.

Please read below the info I got so you know what can be done besides the plastic bottles disposal.

Remember, “NO GLASS” FOR RECYCLING.

What Happens to your Recycling Many Pasco residents are surprised to hear that paper and cardboard products can go in the same container as all their regular recycling. How can this single stream of mixed recyclables be separated into one material or another? The process is complicated. First, contamination and large, bulky items are removed by hand. Then, agitation is used to remove glass shards and small items such as bottle caps.

Huge machines then “fluff” the stream, using air and more agitation to separate fiber (paper and cardboard) from everything else. A magnet pulls away any material that contains iron, mostly steel cans.

Usually an air classifier will use a fan to push lighter goods like aluminum and plastic to a higher conveyor belt while allowing glass to fall to a lower conveyor. An eddy current separator pushes aluminum out of the stream using an induction (reverse) magnet. Finally, an optical sorter uses infrared to separate different grades of plastic based on the spectrum of light they reflect. This way, more valuable plastic like #1 or #2 can be identified. Gone are the days where separate bins for paper, plastic, and cans lined the streets; today, single-stream recycling is the norm, allowing curbside recycling to be as convenient as possible.

In this community of ours we have so many “UNSUNG HEROES” and they do the many little jobs that help our friends and neighbors without even being asked. You don’t hear them complain or say “I can’t be bothered” and they are what help pull this community together. They do this out of the kindness of their hearts and do not wait for a “please”, “will you” or some other plea and just give of their time and effort to please.

Just to name a few things that we all take for granted and I know that I’ve forgotten a lot (sorry for the ones I’ve forgotten) I just wanted everyone to know what we have in Southfork and we are truly lucky to have them..

We have the kind neighbors who help other neighbors with so many different things (ex: checking in on the neighbors who are sick, bringing food to them, taking them on doctors visits if they cannot drive , making visits to the lonely and depressed, inviting them to come with you to activities at the clubhouse) and this is truly a blessing in disguise for a lot of them. There are many residents who cannot help with a lot of these but phone calls are just as good so they hear a friendly voice and without knowing it you could help with a depressing time by you just listening and letting them vent.

We have a volunteer who is the “can recycling person” who go at least once a month or more if needed to bring all the crushed cans to the can recycling place in Zephyrhills and bring back the proceeds to the treasurer.

Because of this, we here in Southfork enjoy the “Recycling Dinner” each year because of his efforts. He is so quiet about this and just an example of this entire article on volunteering.

We have Womens Club volunteers who collect food cans at our monthly meetings and then bring them to Day Star for delivery to the needy. Our Womens Club Charity committee also take care of the needy with collections during the year for clothing, school supplies, Christmas Baskets, Chili Dinner, Bazaar and so much more.

We have the Hotdog/Hamburg volunteers who do the buying, preparing and the selling on Wednesday afternoons during the Fall/Winter season and we appreciate their hard work. We have the dedicated Monday morning coffee volunteers (year round) who purchase the donuts, make the coffee and the cleanup. We have the seasonal once a month breakfast which everyone enjoys and no one knows the amount of effort to put this event on with a good variety of pancakes, French toast and more.

We have the “Street Captains” who deliver the newsletter each month and deliver anything else besides if needed and most do this un-noticed and without question. We also cannot forget the many volunteers who put on the Activities events and Entertainment for our enjoyment.

Besides their time, use of their own vehicles, use of their family members there is never enough thanks given to them for all of their efforts. This also goes out to everyone who takes the time to purchase and donate to all of the causes. I know I have missed more people but thanks goes out to all who help in anyway!

There is nowhere in the Pasco County area like our own Southfork Community where we have the “ best” with the biggest hearts.

Summary of the FMO History 1962-2012 Federation Of Manufactured Home-Owners Of Florida (FMO) 50 years of accomplishments.

On Saturday, Jan. 14th.2012, the FMO celebrated 50 years as an organization in Lakeland.

Life before FS-723 was really unbearable in many manufactured home parks. FMO members prior to 1984 were elected officers in their parks under Unit Organizations. At that time their effort was enrolling residents in FMO only. These Unit Organizations had no input with Park Owners or Park Managers.

Because of this arrangement was the main reason to support passage of FS 723.

Since 1984 many changes occurred within FMO in our mission in the manufactured residential rented land communities. Homeowner Associations were formed and these associations replaced FMO as the influence with Park Owners & Park Managers as outlined in FS 723.

FMO had been in existence for 22 years before the 1984 passage of the Florida Mobile Home Act. During those 22 years, FMO established itself as the organization representing manufactured home communities in Florida with the Florida Legislators.

As we look at our accomplishments over our 50-year history we made our first legislative accomplishment in 1970-1979

FMO forces defeated a "rent tax," saving manufactured homeowners 2 percent multiplied by their annual rent. About $400. a year.

We also defeated mandatory inspection of used manufactured homes prior to sale, saving manufactured homeowners a minimum of $10 for the inspection and possible loss of sale.

The FMO fought for passage of Manufactured Home Owners' Bill of Rights and successfully defended it in Florida Supreme Court.

We assisted in obtaining passage of laws requiring inspection during manufactured home construction, onsite inspection of setup, connection, etc., and increased bonding and proper licensing of manufacturers and dealers.

The FMO assisted in obtaining a law to obtain relocation compensation for moves caused by local government action.

We successfully pushed to obtain an amendment to the eminent domain statute to provide that the condemning authority separately determine and award compensation for permanent improvements made by a manufactured homeowner to the site where the home sets.

A law to protect manufactured homes against levy or sale to satisfy indebtedness or lien passed with FMO assistance, as did a law to replace metal license plates with window decals.

This was our start, FMO continues to represent homeowners in leased land and resident-owned Co-Ops as we continue our mission.

We must all thank Peggy Johnstone and the cooperating 77 parks who created FMO in 1962. We must also thank the many volunteers from FMO State Board of Directors to Park Representatives to our FMO members who over the years have watched over FMO, our mission and our members.

Let us continue for the next 50 years.

In 2015 the FMO has made numerous changes to FS-723 with the co-operation of the FMHA (the park owner association) to make the operations of community HOA's by having more specific By-laws & HOA Officer training programs to help HOA's run a lot more smoothly.

The FMO again in 2020 is preparing to make additional changes to FS-723 to help clarify other areas of concerns.

When you or someone else asks what the FMO does or has done for them remind them of this article and ask them " Why have you not Joined the FMO" Membership is only $25. per year or $65. for 3 years and can be done by contacting your FMO Park Rep.

Become an FMO member and support the only organization that is Protecting, Preserving, and Improving your chosen Lifestyle of living in a Manufactured Mobile Home Community in Florida.
