Dear Friends and Neighbors, Hello to all of you and it feels like fall is finally upon us. Sure has been a hot summer and I’m sure we are all looking forward to the cool days and evenings that will be upon us soon.

I would like to welcome our snowbirds back and look forward to seeing you all out and about. Please all of you be safe in your return trips to LHV. The holidays are just around the corner, it’s hard to belive it is that time of the year already. We will be planning some holiday festivities so please plan to attend and enjoy yourself.

It is also that time of year when we pick the Volunteer of the year.

October 1, we will be putting the box at the clubhouse for you to vote for the volunteer of the year. Then on Nov. 1 we will pull the box and tally the vote and pick the top 4. We will annouce the finalist at the Nov. HOA meeting and you all will vote for your pick. We will also vote at the Dec HOA meeting, with the winner being recognized at the January, meeting. The winner will recive a Crisp $100.00 dollar bill and receive free entry to all HOA activites and events for the year. As I discussed at the last meeting, this park runs on VOLUNTEERS and new volunteers are needed to step up and help with the different activites. I’m sure all of our current volunteers would welcome you all with open arms . Your name could be in the running for next years Voulnteer of the Year. In closing please consider stepping up and helping our current volunteers.

The Legend of Moses White In the summer of 1865, following the end of the Civil War, young Raymond “Moses” White returned to his home in the sleepy little community of Trinity, Florida. Like many of his neighbors, he had fought long and hard against the Union armies in such faraway places as Tallahassee and Pensacola. Fortunately, unlike many of his neighbors, he returned home not much worse for the better, having survived the war with only a few scars and scratches. Nevertheless, young Moses, as he preferred to be called, was thankful to return home to his family at all.

Moses had entered the army at the ripe old age of 14 in the year 1862, with his duties being assigned as nothing more than a “gopher”, but as the war grew on, he began assuming more and more front line duties, ultimately ending his service career as an infantryman.

Returning home, young Moses, now 17 years old resumed working the family farm, raising oranges, corn and cattle.

When Moses wasn't working, he would resort to his favorite past time of fishing. Fishing was good, as it provided an endless supply of fish for the family meals. Of Moses’ most favorite places to fish, was an isolated little lake, infested with water moccasins and alligators and known only to the local residents of Trinity. The lake had no name, but was highly prized by the locals for its huge plentiful bounty of fish. The trick was,

however, to catch the fish before the alligators got them or got you. Moses got pretty good at this as he always returned home with a bounty of fresh fish and a good story or two regarding the narrow escapes from the alligators.

Moses life remained fairly simple as he got older, until he was no longer able to tend the farm. Moses' love of fishing, however, remained strong, and, as he had done for so many years, he could be seen daily on his way to his favorite fishing spot at his favorite little lake, and he would always return home in the evening with a bountiful collection of fish.

Now Moses was a deeply religious man, having seen more than one revelation in his lifetime, many of which he truly believed had safely returned him home from the war and had allowed him to provide for his family through the hard times, such as the Depression Era of 1929. Because of his love for the Lord, and his strong religious beliefs, Moses always made it a point to rest on Sunday and devote the entire day to the service of his Father and his family, and that included, NO FISHING. The week of March 23, 1931, brought torrential rains to Trinity, Florida. The horrible weather continued for 4 straight days and nights with only short periods of clearing, resulting in massive flooding in the local lakes and canals.

Alligators, snakes and other reptiles were everywhere as they tried to escape the flooded waters in search of a small

section of dry land. It wasn't until Saturday, March 28, that the rains finally stopped and the weather attained some sense of clearing. Moses, at 81 years of age, although still healthy, had used every ounce of his strength to help his family keep the home place from literally floating away. It had been an uphill battle, the likes of which Moses and his family had never seen before, but with the weather clearing, the home place began to look like it would survive.

On Saturday night, as Moses prepared to retire for the evening, as he always did, he took a moment to thank his Father for allowing his family, himself and his home to survive the recent flooding. On this particular night, however, Moses took it upon himself to ask for one special request. “Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you for all the blessings that you have bestowed upon me during my lifetime and I, to the best of my ability have tried to live a Christian life, so would you please grant me this one request...may I forgo Church tomorrow and go fishing?�

Sunday morning arrived and Moses, feeling that his prayers were answered, was up at the crack of dawn, gathering his fishing gear and preparing to head to the lake. From this point, the legend becomes somewhat cloudy. His family recalls Moses leaving the house at approximately 6:00 AM, and, a distant neighbor remembers seeing him go past his gate at approximately 6:30 AM. Whatever time it was, it is almost

certain that Moses made it to the lake, but what happened beyond that is food for thought. The fact is that Moses was never seen again, after that Sunday morning. Rumors have flown since that fateful day. . was Moses eaten by an alligator, did he fall into the lake and drown or did he happen upon some other misfortune? The fact remains, Moses just disappeared.

Why is the story of such interest? Well, the lake in question became what is now known as Lake Hammock and the community of Trinity was the little community just west of Haines City on Old Polk City RD. It is said, that on windy evenings, especially during or following heavy rains, you can go down to the lake and hear,

Moooooses.....Moooooses.....Moooooses!

Now one can ask, is this simply the wind, or is it a lost soul calling out his name in hopes of someone coming to find him.

Thoughts on our Encounter with Hurricane Dorian

by The HOA Emergency Preparedness Team As expected, a hurricane came our way, and everyone began planning for the worst-case scenario. We are all thankful that the storm took a different course and that all we received was a little wind and rain.

Here are some thoughts about the experience: ✓ The overall level of awareness at LHV was excellent. ✓ Preparation seemed better than in past years. ✓ The HOA deserves our thanks and appreciation for putting guidelines in place and organizing the group for situations like this. ✓ Monthly Emergency Preparedness Team articles in Gator Tales have helped get the message out and increase awareness. We will work to continue a monthly presence and appreciate the support of the Gator Tales team. ✓ Facebook was very effective and should be utilized even more in the future. ✓ The distribution of maps and hurricane information was very successful. There were no complaints about not receiving it. People knew who to contact for information.

Several residents requested our ‘Hotel List’ for possible evacuation planning. ✓ Our first experience with the ‘Zone’ concept went well. We will work to enhance this concept in the future. ✓ Everyone who was here pitched in to help. Others who were not on the team also helped in their areas, and we thank all of them! ✓ More volunteers are needed in each Zone to help spread responsibilities. The Team will be discussing this. ✓ The Team will continue to work to develop closer relationships between coordinators and volunteers in each zone. ✓ The Team will be discussing whether we should schedule several meetings during hurricane season. The first would be like our June 2019 informational meeting.

Another might be a possible open house type meeting, ‘Meet Your Zone Coordinator & Hurricane Q & A.’ To be discussed further. ✓ The Team will discuss the possibility of putting together our own materials for distribution to LHV residents. That would involve a cost to the HOA, but a good one.

Management was supportive this year and copied a couple of hundred flyers for us.

We will continue to use shelter maps and other materials provided by the county.

However, we should not rely on them, but will continue efforts to be self-sufficient, while taking advantage of the Polk Emergency staff, Polk Fire & Rescue, and LHV management.

✓ It was suggested that we contact Haines City recommending that it sponsor a ‘Hurricane Expo’ type event at Lake Eva Center, for surrounding communities. There was a small one last year in Auburndale. Why not one closer? To be discussed. ✓ The HOA has enough ‘hurricane lights’ (donated by Spectrum) for all snowbirds when they return. ✓ The Team hopes to continue to explore donations, such as survival kits, etc., (sort of like the hurricane lights) as there may be other opportunities out there. ✓ Thanks to everyone at LHV for your assistance and support.

Finally, remember that Hurricane Season is not over, and other storms may come our way between now and November 30th. Be vigilant, and continue to buy water, batteries, and other items while they there are available, and keep your gas tanks and propane tanks full – just in case.
