A Message from the President . . . . .

Dear Friends and Neighbors, Hello to all, it is hard to believe we are into March already. Before we know it, we will be into the heat of the summer. Anyone who has not been to the pool to see the new pavilion, needs to go by and look. This is for you to use anytime you would like, please remember to clean up after use. The fire pit will be nice on those chilly evenings. There will be two new grills, a new griddle grill, rocking chairs around the fire pit and new picnic tables. We will be planning some activities for all soon to utilize the pavilion.

March will be a busy month for us. Saturday March 2nd will be the country breakfast at the clubhouse. Thursday March 14th is the vendor fair at the clubhouse. This year we have several new vendors attending. Sunday March 17th is St Patrick Day dinner at the clubhouse. Saturday March 23 will be the Yard sale here in the park. Please visit the clubhouse and sign up for these events, a lot of work is put into these activities, so please come out and support them.

We have had a few problems in the past in contacting emergency contacts listed at the office. The contacts have changed and/or the phone numbers changed. Please go by the office and update them, so in case of an emergency they can be contacted. Please stop by the office between 10am to 3pm any day over the next week.

By the time you all read this we will have met with Robert from the Polk County Sherriff Office to discuss bringing The CAP program back. I will give an update next Month on the progress of bringing CAP program back.

If you see me out, feel free to stop me with any suggestions, comments or just to say hello.

Gail and her husband Bob, moved to Lake Hammock Village twenty years ago from Exeter, NH. Bob had been in the Army and then the Air Force National Guard, working on cargo planes for many years. Sadly, Bob passed in 2014. Following their move to Florida, Gail went to work at Disney working in retail. She retired fours years ago, following nineteen years with the company.

It is with mixed feelings that we leave Lake Hammock village. In the four years we have been here, we have enjoyed your friendship and love. How wonderful you have been supporting us while things changed in Randy’s health.

We are on a new adventure, but we will return for many of your fun festivities.

Gail and Bob Have one son who is a police officer in New Hampshire and one daughter who is a beautician in Ocala. She has six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Molly and Dazy are her friendly companion dogs.

When her children were small, Gail did a lot of sewing, but now her interests are photography and creating earrings with a friend.

"So many mists in March, so many frosts in May," and "when March blows its horn, your barn will be filled with hay and corn," are two more anecdotal phrases repeated by generations that are not necessarily always true.

The month of March – Just some fun facts March was named after Mars, the Roman god of war. The zodiac signs of Pisces and Aries fall in the month of March. The first day of spring, St. Patrick's Day, and Passover all fall in the month of March. There are numerous sayings, expressions, adages, weather proverbs, idioms and quotes that apply to the month that heralds spring in the northern hemisphere. These traditional springtime sayings have background meaning and rich cultural heritage.

March Madness The expression, "March Madness," was first used in 1939

by Henry V. Porter, a high school basketball coach in Illinois. The term was used to describe the excitement about the Illinois state tournament for boy's basketball.

Today, the term is used by sports promoters and fans, especially for basketball. Commercials and promotions that advertise sales for retail merchants also frequently use the term, "March Madness."

Weather Proverbs for the Month of March Weather in March can be turbulent, and frequently changing. There are numerous traditional sayings and phrases that refer to the weather, well-known adages that help us be prepared for this stormy month.

"When March comes in like a lion, it goes out like a lamb" is an English proverb that has been shortened to "March: In like a lion, out like a lamb."

While this saying is anecdotal and not true every year, the phrase has been taught to millions of

Idioms, Quotes & Sayings for the Month of March "March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers," is another English proverb, sometimes shortened to "April showers bring May flowers."

The Cherokee name for the full moon in March is "Windy Moon," referring to the winds of March.

The March Hare or The Mad March Hare - The expression, "mad as a March hare," comes from a fictional character. There are many versions of the March Hare, a character originally created by Lewis Carroll in his famous book, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The Disney classic and modern renditions portray the hare as distracted and frantic, possibly modeled after cultural perceptions of rabbits' behavior in spring.

St. Patrick's Day Sayings and Irish Blessings Cultural lore and tradition has evolved in the U.S. throughout the years, as the celebration of St. Patrick's Day has become more commercialized.

Wearing green, lucky clovers, and leprechauns have all become tradition.

"Luck of the Irish," "pinch me, I'm Irish," and "there's a pot of gold at the end of every rainbow" are all expressions related to the Irish and St. Patrick's Day. Many Irish blessings are well-known, as well, including the following popular Irish Catholic blessing: "May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be ever at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rain fall softly on your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of his hand."

Myth of the Leprechaun The legend of the Leprechaun is one of the most enduring myths in Ireland and relates to a mystical type of fairy who is originally linked to the Tuatha De Danann of Irish mythology.

According to fables, Leprechauns are tiny entities that normally take the form of an old man in a red or green coat. They are known to be mischievous little creatures that like to make shoes and store their gold coins in a pot of gold that is hidden at the end of a rainbow. If you happen to capture a Leprechaun, he will give you three wishes provided you let him go.

Leprechaun Origin Most Leprechaun legends can be traced back to the 8th century tales of water spirits which were known as ‘luchorpán’ which means ‘small body’. It is said that these spirits merged with a household fairy and developed a penchant for heavy drinking so no cellar was safe!

According to other researchers, the term Leprechaun actually comes from the Irish term ‘leath brogan’ which means shoemaker.

It is interesting to note that Leprechauns are often associated

with wealth, particularly gold coins, but they are actually cobblers which you would hardly presume is a lucrative vocation! Nonetheless, the myth of the pot of gold persists and there are still people who go looking for this hidden treasure!

If you are lucky enough to capture a Leprechaun, he will give you three wishes if you set him free. What would your wishes be?

The Pot of Gold This is the most common of all Leprechaun myths which says that they find gold coins buried in the earth and store them all in a pot

which is hidden at the end of a rainbow. The fact that a rainbow doesn’t have a fixed spot or a real end should be discounted for the sake of the story!

Quite why Leprechauns even need gold is another matter entirely since they can’t actually spend it. Some researchers suggest that this gold is used as a means of tricking humans and given the Leprechauns’ propensity for trickery, this is entirely possible.

In most Irish folklore tales featuring the Leprechaun, he is depicted as a rogue who will deceive whenever he can. In rare cases where humans catch Leprechauns in tales, they are easily outsmarted by the magical creature that often uses a person’s greed against him. Unless you are an expert in all things Leprechaun, there are a few facts about the mystical trickster that may surprise you.

Leprechauns are famous for hiding their pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Will you go treasure hunting?

Popular Culture The image of Leprechauns has been updated and now the legend serves as something of a tourist attraction which lures a huge amount of American tourists in particular to

Ireland. The Leprechaun has really captured the imagination of Americans and features as Notre Dame’s mascot and the symbol of Lucky Charms cereal. Of course, not everything related to Leprechauns is fun or particularly tasteful as can be seen in the awful Leprechaun movies starring Warwick Davis.

Warwick Davis has starred in all SIX Leprechaun horror movies.

It is fair to say that many Irish people are irritated by the ethnic stereotypes perpetuated by Leprechauns but there is a tale of morality that can be taken from the fable of the Leprechaun. The fact that they often trick people who seek the pot of gold can be taken as a warning to people not to be invested in ‘get rich quick’ schemes.

Additionally, you should not look to take what isn’t yours nor should you interfere with things beyond your understanding. Ultimately, tales of the Leprechaun are not to be taken seriously and should only serve to amuse and delight us.

Gator Tales: March 2019 Issue Emergency Preparedness Committee Begins Meeting Planning for 2019 Season

As many of you know, The Emergency Preparedness Committee was established by the LHV Homeowners Association (HOA) in 2018. The Committee’s Mission is:

To review and develop guidelines and procedures for emergency situations and to provide information and assistance to all residents.

They say the only sure things in life are death and taxes. You do not need to be Nostrodamus, a fortune teller, or attend a seance to see into the future and add another “sure thing” to that list. Here is our prediction:

Between June and November, 2019 there will be a number of hurricane level storms threatening to come our way!

As they say in Las Vegas, this is “A Sure Thing”!

These storms arise suddenly with little warning. When one is headed our way you may have two or three days to prepare yourselves. If you find yourself surprised and unprepared, SHAME ON YOU!!!

In our articles we have stressed that preparation is a year long process! You can never take things for granted. If you do not prepare you are asking for trouble!

If that does not sound good to you, please consider volunteering to help your neighbors.

The committee is developing a Hurricane / Disaster Volunteer Program. The goal is to link those needing help to volunteers. For example, a number of people have indicated they need help with removing outside furniture and other items if a storm is coming our way. Some people have volunteered to help with this. We need more people to put together a plan to include everyone.

There are many other needs to be met. Not everyone is physically capable of moving furniture and heavy lifting. Some other needs are: ▪ Checking on people confined to their home – assessing needs and helping.

▪ Checking on others who may have impairments limiting them ▪ Providing resources and assistance to people trying to decide whether to stay or evacuate; Hotel / Motel lists can be provided, etc.

▪ Medication checks – looking in on people with needs; do they have an adequate supply of meds?

Can we help?

▪ Connecting people with others who have working generators and are willing to share them, perhaps to keep medications cool, to charge phones, etc. Note – we are also looking for people with generators to share.

▪ This is not a full list – if you have suggestions we would like to hear them!

If you can help with any of these things – or have ideas - please consider volunteering. We hope to be able to form teams of several people to cover different parts of LHV. The more people we have, the better we will be able to organize and spread out and share the duties.

The Committee will meet in March to discuss its goals plans for 2019. Last year was our first year and we concentrated on providing information and organization. This year we will be focusing on the volunteer effort. We will be asking people to step up and make a commitment to help our neighbors.

The March HOA meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 12th.

The Committee will meet on Wednesday, March 13th at 3:30PM at the clubhouse. All are invited to attend. This will be announced at the HOA meeting.

We hope you will consider becoming involved and the committee looks forward to working together in 2019.
