A Message from the President . . . .

Dear Friends and Neighbors, Happy New Year!! I just can’t believe it’s the start of 2019. First, let me say I wish each of you a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year. As we begin the new year be reminded of our Annual Meeting to be held January 15th in the clubhouse. You must have your 2019 dues paid by January 5th to be able to vote for this year’s nominees for the HOA Board of Directors. If you haven’t paid your dues yet and you wish to, you can contact any board member and they will gladly pick up your $15.00. Refer to your Annual letter notice you received to review many of the items and/or events that are benefited from your annual dues.

Also at January’s meeting you will have the opportunity to vote for your choices for 3 HOA Board members. Those candidates seeking your vote include: David Alms, Gary DeVore, Richard Gould and David Rawson. Your vote will be important as there are 4 candidates for only 3 open positions.

Ending the year, to me, it’s important to thank my board members for all their support to me during this very busy year. Also, a huge thank you to you, the community, for allowing me the opportunity to serve as your President this past year; and the support and love of this great place we call home – Lake Hammock Village. And lastly, all the volunteers who help make all the fun events happen. To all of you, a safe, happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

John and Mary Ellen want to extend their sincere thanks for all the yard sale donations to their private mission.

They held one free dispersal “event” as of December first and all items went. They were moving toward having another one in December with a few more giveaways of some Christmas items and cookies. They are very appreciative of Lake Hammock’s support and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a 2019 of good health.

Thank you from House Blest of Haines City for the 68 pounds of food donated at our Cantata this year. They were very appreciative of all our efforts.

The Poker Run was a success with 37 hands purchased.

The first-place hand was held by Stephanie Storm who graciously donated their winning hand to House Blest Food Bank of Hanes City. They were happy to receive the $185.00 and through their contacts, they will be able to purchase about 1028 lbs. of food. Thank you to all who participated. This brings the total of all our donations to over 2800 pounds.

HISTORY OF THE TOURNEMENT OF ROSES PARADE

of Michigan. When Stanford suffered a crushing loss in that initial game, the football portion of the day's activities were cancelled but eventually returned in 1916. A new stadium for the event was built seven years later and quickly earned the nickname "The Rose Bowl." The game has sold out every year since 1947!

Today, the Rose Parade and all the events organized around it draw tens of thousands to the Pasadena area and literally millions sit in front of the television to enjoy state-ofthe-art floats with high-tech animation, covered with flowers from around the world.

It's a fascinating and breathtaking sight.

The Tournament of Roses Parade was founded in 1890, staged and sponsored by Pasadena's recently-formed Valley Hunt Club. The main idea behind the parade was for these new Californians to showcase their state's mild winter weather, a place where flowers bloomed all year long, in stark contrast to the places they left in the East and Midwest.

Before long, this small rose-themed festival expanded to include motorized floats that awed parade watchers, as well as equestrians and local school and community-based marching bands. Games were held in the town park and the whole city turned out for the event. In just a few years, the festival and parade had already gained national attention, with photos and articles about the parade appearing in large East Coast newspapers like the New York Times. The event's popularity resulted in the formation of a new Tournament of Roses Association in 1895, the same organization that still handles the organization of the parade today.

A football game was added in 1902, the first being played by Stanford and the University

This is a New Year’s tradition for a lot of people, that either live in Southern California or that will watch it on TV. I was fortunate enough to be able to experience this in person while I lived in Southern California, and let me tell you something, it is the most magnificent parade you will ever see. We watch it every year on TV since we have moved. It is really something to see.

The golf cart parade was last night, December 22, 2019. We had 10 carts and they all decorated beautifully. We paraded through the community and then out to spread some Christmas joy in the shopping centers and through the restaurants.

We then returned to the clubhouse for the judging and some cookies and hot chocolate.

The winners this year were; 3rd place was Dona and Ruth Ives, 2nd place was Bruce and Marge Love, and 1st place went to Clark & Joice Smith. Thank you, Richard, for being the leader of the parade and keeping us safe outside the park.

Gator Tales: January 2019 Issue Preparedness: An Ongoing Process!

by The HOA Emergency Preparedness Committee * So…. you are feeling pretty good. Hurricane season is over. The unofficial end of the season was November 30th. You are thinking to yourself that you have dodged the bullet in 2018. You have your feet up on your foot rest with the TV clicker in your hand, looking over the 10,000 available channels, and sipping your favorite drink and thinking “Time to Relax”. Right? Wrong!

Some of those 10,000 channels show Northern Blizzards, Midwest Flooding, California Wildfires, and other assorted disasters.

People like you are dealing with these terrible disasters’ day after day. Did you ever stop to think: “Were they prepared? “We will never know the answer, but the guess is: NO or NOT PREPARED ENOUGH! The HOA Emergency Preparedness Committee would like to encourage you to do something different: START PREPARING NOW! (With apologies to those who are already doing that – maybe you could talk to your neighbors about this).

We understand that most people will probably not do this. Procrastination – putting things off – is human nature. We hope that by bringing this up some of you may consider the merit of starting now to prepare for future events. In theory, we have six or seven months until our next hurricane season (June to November). We KNOW the storms will be coming. We just do not know when they will arrive or how bad they will be. Would it make sense to take $ 5.00 every time you shop and buy some batteries? The shelves are full. They won’t be when a storm is heading our way! Flashlights, canned goods, and other items would also be helpful to store away for the inevitable storm season.

Hurricanes are not the only types of disasters to be concerned about. There were recent tornado warnings in Polk County. There is not much you can do about these as they move too quickly, but it would help to have a plan just in case. We are told that flooding is not a major problem due to the elevation of LHV. In summer, 2017 we had a long dry period and there was a danger of fire from disposed cigarettes, etc. We do have large wooded areas at LHV and nearby. Fire is an issue the committee will be looking at.

Please be aware of things you may see that might be hazards and be sure to report them to management or to one of us. We will pass it on. Awareness and Prevention go hand in hand.

Our meetings are open to anyone interested. We hope to post a schedule of future meetings. As always, we invite your suggestions, comments, and involvement. A list of committee members is provided below. Please feel free to contact any of us.
