A Message from the President . . . .

Dear Friends and Neighbors, December has arrived and we’ve welcomed most of our Snow Birds home for the winter. Welcome Home!! We have a very busy month and look forward to seeing many new faces at our fun events. Be sure to read through the Gator Tales this month for all the busy activities – and save your calendar. The month is certainly full of fun activities – too many to summarize in my little note!

December’s HOA meeting will be the 2nd and final time you may cast your vote for this year’s Volunteer of the Year. This year’s four finalists include: Rich Bialecki, Sheryl Nykaza, Wanda Stanley and Barb Waybill. Be sure to get your vote in, only at the meeting where you will hear a little about each person’s year of volunteer work and good deeds.

Also at December’s meeting you will have the opportunity to hear from the three candidates for the Board of Directors, which will be voted during the Annual Meeting in January. Those candidates are: David Alms, Gary DeVore and Richard Gould. Remember, if you wish to nominate someone or you are interested in being a candidate yourself, this must take place 30-days prior to the annual meeting. So nominations from the floor can only take place at the December meeting, no nominations from the floor are permitted at the Annual Meeting per FS 723.

Ending the month will be our New Year’s Eve Dance with the sounds of Aggie Road Band playing. Be sure to see the flyer for ticket information – there will be no tickets sold at the door and the limit is 80 tickets. No tickets will be sold after December 26. Help us party and ring in the New Year.

Clark and I have received many “thanks for the Veterans Day program. We are very appreciative and humbled by this. It is our honor to do this every year and pay honor and recognition to our Veterans here in the park.

Without the brave men and women of the military we would not have the freedom and opportunity to celebrate this or any other holiday.

Goodbye from Brian and Sue Elkington “Dear all, it was with a heavy heart that we finally made the decision to permanently leave your lovely park. There were of issues around our thoughts but the strongest was the possible bad future health of my 91-year-old mum.

We realized we needed to be nearer the UK so intend on settling in southern Spain.

Thank you all for allowing us into your lives and thank you so much for your friendship and support over the last five wonderful years. We tried to say our goodbyes but failed miserably.

Annual Christmas Golf Cart Parade Saturday, December 22nd, 2018 Parade starts 6:00 PM HOSTED BY: RICHARD GOULD It's time to decorate those Golf Carts and get into the Christmas Spirit. Use your imagination and develop the most unique decorations that encompass the Christmas Spirit. We will be putting those carts on parade every night from 6:30 PM until? beginning December 16th except on December 17th (Bingo night). We will be starting from the clubhouse, culminating with judging, awards on December 22nd. We encourage the community to come out and watch the parade and join us at the clubhouse on the 22nd for cookies and hot chocolate. Everyone is invited to the clubhouse to judge the carts after the parade.

The Christmas Pickle The tradition of the Christmas Pickle has got to be one of the strangest modern Christmas customs in that no one is quite sure why it exists at all!

In the 1880s Woolworth stores started selling glass ornaments imported from Germany and some were in the shape of various fruit and vegetables. It seems that pickles must have been among the selection!

Around the same time it was claimed that the Christmas Pickle was a very old German tradition and that the pickle was the last ornament hung on the Christmas tree and then the first child to find the pickle got an extra present.

However, the claim that it's an old German tradition seems to be a total myth! Not many people in Germany have even heard of the Christmas Pickle! (Similarly in Russia virtually no one knows the supposedly Russian story of Babushka!)

Some families now have the tradition of hanging the pickle on the tree, with the first person/child to find it getting a present. But it probably didn't start in Germany!

There are two other rather far-fetched stories linking the pickle to Christmas.

One features a fighter in the American Civil War who was born in Bavaria (an area of what is now Germany). He was a prisoner, and starving, he begged a guard for one last pickle before he died. The guard took pity on him and gave a pickle to him. The pickle

gave him the mental and physical strength to live on!

The other story is linked to St. Nicholas. It's a medieval tale of two Spanish boys traveling home from a boarding school for the holidays. When they stopped at an inn for the night, the evil innkeeper, killed the boys and put them in a pickle barrel. That evening, St. Nicholas stopped at the same inn, and found the boys in the barrel and miraculously bought them back to life!

There is an old legend about St. Nicholas rescuing boys from a barrel but the barrel was originally holding meat for pies - not pickles!

So it's most likely that an ornament salesmen, with a lot of spare pickles to sell, invented the legend of the Christmas Pickle!

The American city of Berrien Springs, MI (also known as the Christmas Pickle Capital of the World) has an annual pickle festival held during the early part of December.

Boxing Day - the Day after Christmas!

Boxing Day takes place on December 26th and is only celebrated in a few countries; mainly ones historically connected to the UK (such as Canada, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand) and in many European countries. In Germany it is known as "Zweite Feiertag” (which means 'second celebration') and also “Zweiter Weihnachtsfeiertag” which translates as Boxing Day (although it doesn’t literally mean that)!

It was started in the UK about 800 years ago, during the Middle Ages. It was the day when the alms box, collection boxes for the poor often kept in churches, were traditionally opened so that the contents could be distributed to poor people. Some churches still open these boxes on Boxing Day. It might have been the Romans that first brought this type of collecting box to the UK, but they used them to collect money for the betting games which they played during their winter celebrations!

In Holland, some collection boxes were made out of a rough pottery called 'earthenware' and were shaped like pigs. Perhaps this is where we get the term 'Piggy Bank'!

It was also traditional that servants got the day off to celebrate Christmas with their families on Boxing Day. Before World War II, it was common for working people (such as milkmen and butchers) to travel round their delivery places and collect their Christmas box or tip.

This tradition has now mostly stopped and any Christmas tips, given to people such as postal workers and newspaper delivery children, are not normally given or collected on Boxing Day. Boxing Day has now become another public holiday in countries such as the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It is also the traditional day that Pantomimes started to play.

There are also often sports played on Boxing Day in the UK, especially horse racing and football matches! It's also when shops traditionally had big sales after Christmas in the UK (like Black Friday in the USA).

The 26th December is also St. Stephen's Day. Just to confuse things, there are two St. Stephens in history! The first St. Stephen is believed to have been a very early follower of Jesus and he is said to have been the first Christian Martyr (a person who dies for their religious beliefs). The Bible says that Stephen (who was a Jew) was stoned to death by some other Jews (who didn't believe in Jesus).

The second St. Stephen was a Missionary, in Sweden, in the 800s. He loved all animals but particularly horses (perhaps why there is traditionally horse racing on boxing day). He was also a martyr and was killed by pagans in Sweden. In Germany there was a tradition that horses would be ridden around the inside of the church during the St. Stephen's Day service!

St. Stephen's Day (or 'the feast of Stephen') is when the Carol 'Good King Wenceslas' is set.

It's about helping the poor - so it has a strong connection to Boxing Day.

The HOA Hurricane / Disaster Volunteer Program – Update

by The HOA Emergency Preparedness Committee By the time you read this the “official” hurricane season will be close to an end. So far, we have been fortunate in 2018. As we all know, things can change quickly, and we need to be prepared.

Preparation is a yearlong and continuing process.

The HOA Emergency Preparedness Committee was established by the LHV Homeowners Association (HOA) earlier this year. The Committee’s Mission is to review and develop guidelines and procedures for emergency situations and to provide information and assistance to all residents. The following is a summary of our efforts to date: ▪

The committee was established as a standing committee of the HOA and began meeting in June 2018.

During the summer the committee distributed a Storm Contact & Services Sheet to identify residents needing help & asking for volunteers to help. NOTE: If you have not filled one out and wish to do so, contact one of the members listed below.

New residents are now receiving storm preparedness information packets developed by the committee.

Information will be updated on an ongoing basis through contact with Polk County Emergency Services.

A list of volunteers was developed from the Storm Contact & Services Sheet and other sources, along with a list of residents needing some type of assistance.

Over 20 people have volunteered to date to help in some way At the November HOA meeting, committee member & HOA VP Jerry Sibila reported on this and encouraged people to participate.

The committee is working to develop a Hurricane / Disaster Volunteer Program. Our goal is to link those needing help to volunteers. For example, several people have indicated they need help with removing outside furniture and other items if a storm is coming our way. We have people who have volunteered to help with this.

There are other needs to be met. We would like to see two-person teams visit and assist with issues such as: ▪ ▪ ▪

Checking on people confined to their home – assessing needs and helping.

Checking on others who may have impairments limiting them Providing resources and assistance to people trying to decide whether to stay or evacuate; Hotel / Motel lists can be provided, etc.

Medication checks – looking in on people with needs; do they have an adequate supply of meds? Can we help?

This is not a full list – if you have suggestions, we would like to hear them!

Connecting people with others who have working generators and are willing to share them, perhaps to keep medications cool, to charge phones, etc. Note – we are also looking for people with generators to share.

We recently met with all volunteers and discussed this in greater detail.
