What Makes A Dad

God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle's flight, The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed, The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need, Then God combined these qualities, When there was nothing more to add, He knew His masterpiece was complete, And so, He called it ... DEFIBRILLATOR

Southfork now has a DEFIBRILLATOR which is located outside the Office door at the clubhouse as of 5/4/2018.

A great big thank you to Harvey Barber for getting this started and bringing it to the attention of members at the HOA meeting. Through his determination it was discussed and approved by the members and voted for the HOA to purchase this equipment for the use of all residents.

HOA paid for the unit which was $930.00 and Scott Heiler purchased the cabinet it is stored in. Craig Whitbeck was instrumental in getting it set up on the wall and will monitor the unit on a monthly basis to make sure it is in working condition.

There is an alarm on the door of the unit and when the door is open the alarm will go off so please do not open the door of the unit unless in an emergency.

Here is a little explanation of what a defibrillator is:

Defibrillation is a procedure used to treat life threatening conditions that affect the rhythm of the heart such as cardiac arrhythmia, ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia.

The procedure involves the delivery of an electric shock to the heart which causes depolarisation of the heart muscles and re-establishes normal conduction of the heart’s electrical impulse. The machine used to deliver this therapeutic shock to the heart is called a defibrillator.

Friday night get together 4/21/2018 Article and photo’s submitted by Kathy Gallick Pavilion, beautiful tables, great neighbors, let's do it again. Socializing is great, but, some of our senior citizens, Dilly, Dilly, what the heck! See you next time.

Southfork Women’s Club

On Wednesday, 5/2/2018, 32 members were in attendance for the very first seasonal meeting for the summer months and it was held picnic style at the pavilion. What a great time had by all. No shortage of very delicious food items. Each member brought some really good tasting specialty items and desserts. So with good food, lots of chatter and great weather how could it be bad???? Anyway, thanks to Vice President, Gail Young for her great job of organizing and look below for our next get together………………….

“Now off the Beaten Path” (

Green Door Restaurant )

It specializes in Cajun and Creole foods but have many other items to choose from. A head count is needed for reservations so please sign-up at the clubhouse Contact, Gail Young at 630-415-9880 with any questions……

Southfork Women’s Club picnic 5/2/2018 Article submitted by Kathy Gallick What a great time. So refreshing to have lunch with your neighbors, and the Women's Club Members. There was no shortage of very delicious foods. Each gal out did themselves. Thanks to our Vice President, Gail Young, the meeting was pleasant and fun, learning all about where from and why we are all here. Wishing our President in Canada a healthy summer. Catch you all at the next luncheon, perhaps behind The Green door!

Neighbor Watch Alert

Just a word to the wise………………Do you have a “ watch code” with your neighbors in case of an emergency? This is especially for those that live alone and a sort of a “watch out for one another”. A suggestion would be for each neighbor to look out in case any of you need help and this goes for all residents. If you have a certain window that has a blind you close at dark and open in the morning when you awake……………well let your neighbor know that if it Is not opened by a certain time in the morning to immediately call you to make sure everything is okay. Make a plan as to whom your neighbor should call if this should happen. Should they be able to enter your home or should 911 be called? It has been noted that many who live alone do not wear a “life alert” so that emergency can be called immediately if help is needed. There are many here in Southfork who do not interact with neighbors and if it looks like no one is moving around and their car is still in the driveway, it could mean trouble. So as a word to the wise…….start an emergency action code to avoid any problems that can be avoided. Thanks, Phyllis

As you all know by now our park managers Kevin & Kim have resigned.

To Kevin & Kim as you embark upon a new path let us wish you many moments of happiness, success and enjoyment. Enjoy your new found freedom and your new adventures. We bid you farewell and hope your family will be getting stronger with you both being there for them.……………

Neighbor Knock During any Hurricane or Major Storms What happens in our community in cases of Hurricanes or Tornado’s like we had last year? Should our community have a group to check on neighbors? Is there any interested person or person’s ready to take this venture on? Someone who can start a committee and meet often to see what we as a community can do to help someone in need at these trying times. Ask for help by others, of course!!! Help could mean so many things such as being picked up off the floor, needing use of a backup generator for a breathing machine , needing an ambulance, food, water or being brought to a shelter if something happens to their home while they are in it. I am sure there are many that say they cannot be bothered and only worrying about themselves, but stop and think if it was you in this situation…….would you want help? Now consider this. Our community life will not return to normal until power is restored, and schools and businesses can reopen and we have running water. So if you find yourself without power and are wondering what to do, (wonder if your neighbor is okay) here’s a way to do something meaningful. Go knock on their door and ask if they’re OK. Maybe they’ll answer and maybe they won’t.

Don’t let

that stop you. It’s disorienting to be without power. They might not know what time it is, some might not know what day it is. Without electricity, their landline telephone probably isn’t working. And as we all know, cell service is hit or miss. The same for internet service. Plus, heat can creep up on you. What if something has happened to that retiree down the street? What if they’ve fallen and no one knows? So go, check. Perhaps you can offer help of some kind or call for help. Knowing someone cares can make the world of difference in someone’s life. And let’s face it. Older folks get set in their ways. Perhaps you know someone who refused to evacuate. Perhaps they’re still refusing to leave, even though they lack power. This is also a time when a backup family member should be called and let them know the situation. Change can be hard for us all, but it can be especially difficult for seniors to pick up and move. “Transfer trauma” is a real thing. It’s especially deadly for people who are frail and elderly. So with so many people still without power, now’s the time for neighbors to check on neighbors. Do it for them.

Do it for yourself.

I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL!

THIS IS THE MONTH TO HONOR THE FLAG AND ALL THE TROOPS AND VETERANS WHO HELPED FREE THIS GREAT COUNTRY OF OURS!!!!!!

D-DAY - JUNE 6, 1944 : Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of Allied Expeditionary Force! You are about to embark upon the Great crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the word are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you... I have full confidence in your courage and devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory !" Dwight D. Eisenhower

Flag Day - June 14th -is celebrated among the people of the United States of America. The celebration is aimed to pay the gratitude to their national flag and importantly the birth of the national flag. The origin of the significance of this very special day is far back on 14th January, 1777; when the continental congress replaced the British symbols of the grand union flag. This flag featured 13 stars in a circular shape on the course of blue and 13 red and white stripes. These 13 stars indicated the presence of 13 states in America which were later increased on the account of entries of new states. The stripes were also increased to 15 but then reversed back to the old 13.

We heard this at the Red Skelton Show 4/22/2018 and I had to pass it along. On January 14, 1969, Red Skelton touched the hearts of millions of Americans with his “Pledge Of Allegiance“, in which he explained the meaning of each and every word. Red Skelton’s recitation of the “Pledge of Allegiance” was twice read into the Congressional Record of the United States and received numerous awards. RED SKELTON: “I remember this one teacher. To me, he was the greatest teacher, a real saga of my time. He had such wisdom. We were all reciting the Pledge Of Allegiance and he walked over and Mr. Lasswell was his name… He said”: “I’ve been listening to you boys and girls recite the Pledge Of Allegiance all semester and it seems as though it is becoming monotonous to you. If I may, may I recite it and try to explain to you the meaning of each word: I, Me; an individual; a committee of one. ------- Pledge, Dedicate all of my worldly goods to give without self-pity.Allegiance, My love and my devotion. ------ To the Flag, Our standard; Old Glory; a symbol of Freedom; wherever she waves there is respect, because your loyalty has given her a dignity that shouts, Freedom is everybody’s job. --of the United, That means that we have all come together. ---- States, Individual communities that have united into forty-eight great states. Forty-eight individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose. All divided with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common purpose, and that is love for country. ------And to the Republic, Republic — a state in which sovereign power is invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern. And government is the people; and it’s from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people. For which it stands One Nation, One Nation — meaning, so blessed by God. ------- Indivisible, Incapable of being divided. ------ With Liberty, Which is Freedom; the right of power to live one’s own life, without threats, fear, or some sort of retaliation. -------

And Justice, The principle, or quality, of dealing fairly with others. ------

For All, For All — which means, boys and girls, it’s as much your country as it is mine. And now, boys and girls, let me hear you recite the Pledge of Allegiance:

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic, for which it stands; one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Since I was a small boy, two states have been added to our country, and two words have been added to the Pledge of Allegiance: “ Under God.” “Wouldn’t it be a pity if someone said that it’s a prayer, and then would be eliminated from schools, too?”

TOPS in Southfork TOPS Club Inc is the oldest weight loss support group. TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) was started 1948 in Milwaukee, WI with more than 8,000 Chapters in United States and Canada. HAND IN HAND TOGETHER WE CAN was the theme for Florida TOPS State Recognition Days. Southfork FL 0849 was very pleased to recognize Dorothy Cady for reaching her goal weight as suggested by her doctor for over 1 year. She has been a good example to her fellow members. Meetings are held once a week where the members are encouraged to lose weight, with accountability. Programs are presented each meeting about nutrition, exercise, emotional eating, etc. Members add to the discussion and ask questions. Our Chapter has 8 ladies and 1 gentleman. We are happy to share our weight loss story. We are pleased to have two new members (snowbirds) added to our Chapter. Residents and snowbirds are welcome. Meetings are at the Clubhouse, in the Card Room, every Monday, 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Visitors are welcome, contact; Phyllis Fisher 11122 Ewing DR, call 352-534-0778.

“Southfork” Community Weigh to Go We meet every week at the clubhouse on Saturday mornings at 9am. We focus on healthy living which includes healthy eating. We are a support group and do not give out diets to follow and each does that on their own. We do have health and weight related programs we discuss weekly. Fee to join is $5.00 per year. There is an optional 50/50 weekly and the best loss of weight for the week will be the winner. We also have a “gainer fee” and that means if you gain any weight for the week you must pay a quarter. No other money is needed!!! This is open to all residents and communities here in the area. No rules to follow and we talk support for and with one another even if not weight related. We stand alone and not affiliated with any outside groups. Thanks, Phyllis Grossi Any questions, contact me at 567-6105 or email me @ pkaygrossi@aim.com

Southfork Billboard Sign Submitted by Kathy Gallick

I always enjoy viewing our activity sign as I drive through our park. What's going on, when it's going on, where it's going on, etc. Today as I viewed our sign and I did SMILE. Thank you for posting "SMILE." Sometimes we forget that a smile can make someone's day. You made me smile and I'll play it forward!
