A Message from the President . . . . .

Dear Friends and Neighbors, During the past two years I’ve had the opportunity to serve as your Vice-President and today I am very honored and proud to accept the position as President for your Lake Hammock HOA. Included in your Annual Meeting Notice packet were requests for the “Resident Improvement Fund” and ideas for “Future Events” that you’d like to see happen. We will be reviewing these and developing a plan of action to bring to you more ideas and activities. I encourage each of you to attend our HOA Board meetings and our General HOA meetings to participate and offer your input.

I am also very excited with the group of residents who have stepped up and chosen to be a part of your Board of Directors. We’ve met for a “work session” to become acquainted with each other, to throw out suggestions and ideas we all have as goals for our future year, and just brainstorming as a group. I truly believe the next year will be special for each of us. Remember, this is your park and we’re just here to help make it the best community around. Your input, suggestions and ideas are an important part of our HOA. Lastly, I want to extend a big thanks to our departing directors and officers who devoted so much to our community, Clark Smith, Maria Combs, Joyce Wright and Calvin Maluchnick. They truly devoted enormous time, energy and great ideas and maybe we’ll see them join us again at a later time.

Again, thank you for your support and confidence. See you out and about.

BETTY R. RHODES Betty R. Rhoades, 93, born June 12th, 1924; passed away January 8th, 2018 at Heart of Florida Medical Center.

She was a longtime resident of Haines City. She was born in Johnstown, PA. and a graduate from Dale Borough High School.

She was married to Robert E. Rhoades in November 1945. The resided in Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Maryland, Illinois, Florida, Utah, Tennessee, and finally in Florida. Bob passed away in Oct. 1988.

Betty is survived by two children: Lee R. Rhoades son and Karen A (Rhoades) Patelunas, both of Haines City, two grandchildren, Jason Rhoads and Lisa Patelunas, two great grandchildren, Carissa and Kayla, also two nieces and three newphews.

Betty was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was an active member of the New Horizons Methodist Church.

Betty served as a volunteer at the voting poll. Betty also volunteered at the Heart of Florida Medical Center for more than 30 years. She loved working on ceramics projects at the Haines City Park District. She like to play Bingo and CLR at her club house. She was active, and a well-loved member of the community and she will be deeply missed. She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years and her two sisters.

A memorial service will be held at the New Horizon Church at 400 Orchid Terrace, Haines City FL, 33844.

K.Z. and I wish to thank everyone for the prayers, cards, phone calls and hospital visits during K.Z.’s stay for pneumonia. Thanks to Hacy and Joyce Wright for the meals and other things you do for us.

Thank also to Joan Lander for the soups and dessert. Thanks to Phil and Sharon Greenfield for coming to the hospital to pray for K.Z.’s healing and for the muffins. Thanks to Norm and Jan Baczkiewicz for the soup and dinner rolls. Also, thanks to the Sunshine Committee for the get well cards. With both of us ill it is such a blessing to have people who care. That is one of the reasons we live in this great community.

I would like to thank everyone here at Lake Hammock for all of the phone calls, and prayers that were given to Richard after his stroke. A special thanks to those who offered to help me out in my time of need. It’s much appreciated. He is doing much better.

We would like to thank everyone for your condolences, cards and hugs and offer of help.

Betty Rhoades moved to Lake Hammock Village in April 2002 and quickly became part of the community. She knew some people before she moved here but it wasn’t long she seemed to know everyone. People have told me she reminded them of their mother or grandmother which is a true compliment. Mom got involved in many activities here in addition to her volunteer activities outside the park; she was always on the go and hard to keep up with. Mom really was a special person and she will be truly missed.

With sadness, Vera and Susan Krause announces the passing of John Cullen, their brother-in-law and uncle respectively, on December 23rd, 2017. John was 86 years old.

John and his wife Maura were long-time residents of Lake Hammock, having lived for more than 14 years at 51 Sargent. John and Maura moved back to Connecticut in 2016 to be closer to their daughters and grandchildren In addition to his family here and in CT, John is survived by his family in Ireland where he was born and raised.

Condolences can be sent to Maura Cullen at 211 Pomeroy Ave., Apt. 1110, Meriden, CT 06450.

DAVE AND HELEN HURR Helen hails from Franklin, PA and moved to their new home at 207 Glen Este Ct in June of 2017. They have been married for 35 years and have 1 son, 1 daughter and 3 grandchildren.

Dave was an Electrical Engineer for Central Electric Co-op and retired from there after 32 years. Helen was a Communications Operator with the Pennsylvania State Police until she left to raise her family. She then became a Pharmacy Technician from which she retired in June 2017.

As for the future, they are trying to get their new home organized, Helen is toying with the idea of working for Disney, and Dave wants to get involved in amateur radio.

Dave and Helen have a golf cart and enjoy riding outside the gates to visit the restaurants and other businesses. They can also usually be seen in the evening hours walking throughout the neighborhood. If you see them, please stop, introduce yourself and welcome them to our community.

History of Valentine’s Day History of Valentine’s Day – The Man Valentine Is the history of Valentine’s Day expressed in the current celebration of yummy chocolates, lovely cards, and sparkling engagement rings? What is the story behind such a highly-retailed celebration?

Some say the day is named after a bishop named Valentine, who was stationed in the Roman Empire.

Claudius II was the Emperor at that time.

He thought that unmarried men made better soldiers, so he decided to make it a law that young men could not marry.

Around 270 A.D., Valentine took pity on the ostracized soldiers who were not permitted to marry or see their sweethearts.

He became an advocate of these young lovers and began to perform secret marriages. He was soon found out and jailed. Emperor Claudius II attempted to convert Valentine to begin worshipping the Roman gods, but Valentine refused. Instead, he tried to convert Claudius to Christianity and Valentine sentenced to be executed on February 24, 270.

Another version of the history of Valentine’s Day tells that Valentine fell in love with his jailer’s daughter. Just before his death, he sent her a note and signed it “from your Valentine.” An aura of romance surrounded his demise and those who knew about it

spread the tale. Bishop Valentine became Saint Valentine with his fame extending to England and France.

After his death, Valentine then became what is known as a “Patron Saint.” Some considered him the spiritual overseer of an annual festival in which young Romans would distribute cards of affection to those they wished to formally see. This festival was held each February 14. There are Valentine cards in museums worldwide that date back to 1415.

February has been the month to celebrate love ever since the Middle Ages.

History of Valentine’s Day - Symbols of the Day Even though the history of Valentine’s Day is unclear, it has become one of the most popular holidays among lovers and florists!

The common symbols of Valentine’s Day in this era are cupids, hearts, roses, teddy bears, and words of adoration. Children exchange valentine cards decorated with current comic and cartoon icons. Adults have continued this tradition of card giving which makes this day, behind Christmas, the second largest card-sending holiday of the year.

Cupids with bows and arrows represent Roman mythology. Cupid was the son of Venus, the goddess of love. The shot of the arrow would strike the unsuspecting desired person or god, making him fall in love.
