Southfork News “FOR THE RESIDENTS, BY THE RESIDENTS Have a great month!

December

2017

Awesome Christmas Story 'Twas the night before Christmas & out on the ranch, The pond was froze over & so was the branch. The snow was piled up belly-deep to a mule. The kids were all home on vacation from school, And happier young folks you never did see- Just all sprawled around a-watchin' TV. Then suddenly, some time around 8 o'clock, There came a surprise that gave them a shock! The power went off, the TV went dead! When Grandpa came in from out in the shed With an armload of wood, the house was all dark. "Just what I expected," they heard him remark. "Them power line wires must be down from the snow. Seems sorter like times on the ranch long ago." "I'll hunt up some candles," said Mom. "With their light, And the fireplace, I reckon we'll make out all right." The teen-agers all seemed enveloped in gloom. Then Grandpa came back from a trip to his room, Uncased his old fiddle & started to play That old Christmas song about bells on a sleigh. Mom started to sing, & 1st thing they knew Both Pop & the kids were all singing it, too. They sang Christmas carols, they sang "Holy Night," Their eyes all a-shine in the ruddy firelight. They played some charades Mom recalled from her youth, And Pop read a passage from God's Book of Truth. They stayed up till midnight-and, would you believe, The youngsters agreed 'twas a fine Christmas Eve. Grandpa rose early, some time before dawn; And when the kids wakened, the power was on.. "The power company sure got the line repaired quick," Said Grandpa - & no one suspected his trick. Last night, for the sake of some old-fashioned fun, He had pulled the main switch - the old Son-of-a-Gun! -anonymous

“BRANSON CHRISTMAS SHOW” December 12, 2017

@ 7:00pm

Tickets are $7.50 per person

An Ohio native, Brian plays in Branson, Missouri and Las Vegas, Nevada annually and then travels south for the winter. Brian Brenner has something in common with today's seniors. He really enjoys the music of yesteryear, whether it's the standards or the music of the great Las Vegas entertainers. Brian wants to bring the music he really loves to the audience that will appreciate it most. During this very special show, , Brian will charm the audience with his friendly, charasmatic presence while delivering a selection of songs that are especially appealing to the senior citizens of today. Brian will salute the 50’s & 60’s with country standards and comedy with a Christmas theme. While Brian has thrilled audiences nationwide with his electrifying salute to the King of Rock & Roll, he has also been called upon to reproduce the works of other notable celebrities, from Las Vegas crooners like Wayne Newton, to country stars. In this Oldies Salute, Brian Brenner will amaze you with his virtuosity while bringing back to life some of your favorite tunes from days gone by. He may bring his big screen video background effects. This is our first show of the season and at a higher level.

Bring a dish to share for 8-10 people and the rest of the dinner is potluck style. Remember to bring your own table service. Tea and coffee will be provided, but you may bring a different beverage if you prefer. Please sign up at the Clubhouse so we know how many Turkeys have to be purchased. Sponsored by the Southfork Association/Park Managers

PLEASE SIGN UP SO WE CAN PLAN

Recycling Submitted by Norm Conaty, Southfork Recycling Man The recycling container for paper is at the dead end of Ewing Dr in the RV area. Just a reminder to all the folks in Southfork. I still see a lot of paper products going into the garbage collection twice a week instead of the recycling container. BUT, in spite of this we have doubled the volume of paper recycled in the past and primarily because of the effort of Phyllis placing reminders in the newsletter to all of us to recycle. Because of the volume increase and to avoid overflow, we are placing a second container for everyone to place all paper products. Hope this helps the collection of the paper. This is an easy way for you to recycle your newspaper, cardboard, magazines, junk mail, phone books, paper bags and any office paper. So to all the new residents I hope this information helps and now know where to recycle.. PLEASE, NO PLASTIC BAGS! Just a reminder, we also have a container for can recycling back in the RV area and again, please no plastic bags “REMEMBER, NO ONE SHOULD BE HELPING THEMSELVES TO THE CANS OR PAPER GOOD’S EXCEPT THE RECYCLING COMMITTEE” So please recycle, “The Recycle Man”

Veterans Day Remembrance Article submitted by, Kathy Gallick For anyone who missed The Zephyrhills Veterans Day Parade on Nov 11th, you certainly missed a great morning. Music by Lee Greenwood, I'm Proud To Be An American, always brings a tear to my eye, To mention a few, Police Department, Rescue Squad, Fire Department, WWII veterans, Vietnam Veterans, all who served so we can enjoy our freedom. Youngsters, involved with parents who take the time to help make our country great, scouts, mounted police corp, just to name a few. My Moose Lodge 2276, and Amvets 550 participated as well. And the Bulldogs were down 21 to zip last night and came back to win, 35 to 31. Now in semi finals, good luck guys. With all the bad things we read and see on social media, take a moment to stand shoulder to shoulder with your patriotic neighbor and sing our Anthem! Mr. Ellis' rendition of our National Anthem was breathtaking, and no one, took a knee." I love this country, God Bless America

Old Christmas Cards

Please save all the covers from your Christmas cards (or any greeting cards) and place them in the designated box in our Library starting the 1st week of December through and including mid January. They will be sent to a group who uses them to decorate Christmas stockings for prisoners. They used our cards from last year and distributed over 1000 stockings. They sent Southfork a very nice thank-you. Thanks in advance!! Carol Barnett

FURBIES AND FEATHERED FRIENDS OF SOUTHFORK We all love our family, animal friends, so here’s some with their proud owners. A special bond happens and they are as much a part of our families as others. It’s amazing how many of our families here share the love and pride of our animal friends. This month, we’re walking the dogs…or out and about on a golf cart! Call me if you want your pet featured in upcoming articles! Don’t forget….pick up after those pets! They can’t do that…we must!  Meet “Pal”…He is a 9-year old pure-bred miniature Poodle. Pal was rescued by Gary and Linda Rose from a shelter, where he was bound for demise. He’d been used for stud purposes and then tossed aside. Thank you Gary and Linda for coming to his resue. Gary says Pal is so gentle and sweet and quite a little “love bug” and loves to cuddle. He follows Gary everywhereexcept to the bathroom. Guess he sees a “dreaded bath coming on.” A great story…Pal is lucky, Linda and Gary! These pretty ladies are Rosie and Jean Rapinac! Rosie is a 6½ year-old Yorkie-Poodle. Jean got her from someone selling puppies from the back of a van when Rosie was only 12 weeks old. Her momma was a black poodle! Looks like Rose got her Yorkie color from her daddy! Jean says she’s rowdy and very smart! She loves people and next time I visit Rosie, I’ll bring her a Cesars treat that she loves so well. Pretty Girl and a real sweetheart! Rosie you’re lucky to have such a caring mother!

Here are two sweet dogs given a perfect home with Ron and Pam Glenna! With Pam, Buddy (Right) is a 9-year old Pomeranian/Pepion mix. What a cutie he is and he watches everything, everywhere. On the left is 15-year old Jake, who is a pure bred Shiatzu. They got Jake when he was eight weeks old from a breeder. Buddy joined the family when he was about three months old. They are lucky dogs too to have such a loving family!

We will have more pets featured in future articles…join us and tell us about them! I would like to thank those who want to share the love of your furbies and feathered, family friends! Jean Deiss 863-602-1535

Another great volunteer Article submitted by, Kathy Gallick

Hey, Hey We're The Monkies! If by some chance you see this wonderful neighbor walking in Southfork, wearing a monkey Hat, singing, Hey !Hey we're the Monkies, NO, it is not Mickey Dolenz but our own, Bill Cline. This gentleman serves so very many events, at St. Rita's Catholic Church, and then again at The Order Of The Moose . Each Sunday I enjoy his singing, kindness and pleasant conversation. “ And the Queen Lives On! “ Thanks for all you, your wife and family do for our community. So when and if you see Bill, with or without his Monkey Hat, say thank you, he well deserves it. We won't mention "The returning of the infamous key". Thanks Bill. See you at the Moose

Our community of Southfork is truly blessed. In the past, each morning myself, and my pup Miss Dade would be greeted by Jim and his beautiful companion Lucky Lady taking their morning stroll through our park. We know Lucky Lady crossed the Rainbow Bridge, missed by all, especially her most caring master. Jim is married to Linda, they have 2 daughters and 2 grandsons. Jim is retired from Ford Motor Company, relocated to Florida 2 years ago. Jim also served in the U.S. Army, and has never "taken a knee!" Jim enjoys the company of 4 brothers and 3 Sisters. To mention a few of his accomplishments: Lions Member. Moose member where he volunteers every weekend, running The Queen of Hearts, which I would love to win this weekend and making certain that 50/50 enjoys a wonderful return. Thursday, if in the area of The Moose Lodge, you will find Jim cutting grass, and doing just what needs to be done. For all his kindness and hard work, Jim was recently nominated as Moose of The Month. Quite an honor. Linda and Jim will now be working with the Toys for Tots program. Jim is always available to help. How lucky are they? Of course, when our Southfork needed a Bingo caller, Jim again stepped up to the plate. You'll see Jim helping neighbors, before Irma, after Irma, and anytime in between. Thanks Jim. Jim volunteers at St. Rita's Catholic Church, Eucharistic Minister among other duties. He takes the moment to speak my name at the alter, again, thank you Jim. Loves fishing and loves spending time with his grandchildren. Unless you catch him playing cards at the clubhouse, always participating to make our community united and fruitful. If you pass his home, you will see his Lucky Lady proudly keeping watch! A pleasure to know this man. God Bless America Article submitted by, Kathy Gallick

Monday Morning Coffee Hour There is a Monday morning coffee hour each week starting at 8am to 9am. There is always coffee brewing which is free to all residents and we do have donuts for those who are a little hungry and with a small charge of $.50 each for each donut. What a good way to meet some of your neighbors and start your week. The men are usually talking about the latest sport event on TV or some current political news item that is causing a stir in the world. (There is so much discussion that the world problems could be solved right here in Southfork by our locals.) (smile) On the other hand the women are always talking about the latest happenings right here in our own community . Just sitting at one of our tables of residents you can learn a lot about what is going on here in Southfork and the surrounding community. There is no agenda or speakers and just a chance for our community to come together. Bring your smile and wit and we’ll furnish your coffee free. We would love to get to know all of our new residents and the others that have been in hibernation lately. Come join us on Monday’s!!!! _____________________________________________________________________________________

“Back to School” New Alphabet Article submitted by resident, Don Perrin

A is for apple and B is for boat. That used to be right, but now it won’t float! Age before beauty is what we once said, but let’s be a bit more realistic instead.

New Senior Alphabet

A’s for arthritis,

B’s the bad back,

C’s the chest pains, perhaps car-d-iac,

D is for dental decay and decline, E is for eyesight, can’t read the top line, retention,

F is for fissures and fluid

G is for gout, rather painful I’ll mention, H is for high blood pressure –I’d rather it low, I for incisions with scars you can show, that crack when they bend, L is for life of what there is left, nerves way down low,

M is for memory, I forget what comes next,

O is for osteo, bones that don’t grow, I’ll be good as new, Q is for quesy, is it the flu,

J is for joints, out of socket, won’t mend,

K is for knees

N is neuralgia, in

P for prescriptions, I have quite a few, just give me a pill and

R is for reflux, one meal turns into two

S is for sleepless nights, counting my fears, U is for urinary, troubles with flow,

T is for tinnitus, bells in my ears,

V is for vertigo, that’s “dizzy” you know,

W is for worry, now what’s going ‘round, X is for X-Ray and what might be found, Y for another year I’m left here behind, Z is for zest I still have—in my mind.

I’ve survived all the symptoms, my body’s deployed, and I’m keeping twenty-six doctors fully employed!

A Sunny Christmas in Florida!

Every year at Christmas time There's not a sign of snow. Instead we spend our yuletide days In the sun's warm cheery glow. We have the best of Christmas things, The lights, the gifts, the bells, (And "snowbirds" who arrive en masse To fill our beach hotels.) The glorious weather fits right in With our happy Christmas mood, And we can also walk and run Without having to be snowshoed. So don't feel bad for your (location) friends Who have no snow or ice. We think our sunny Christmas here Is a holiday paradise!
