A message from the President….

Dear Friends and Neighbors, As we move into November, many of our “Northern” friends and neighbors are slowly returning to Lake Hammock Village.

With their return, our calendars are filled with many activities. This month we start off with the Harvest Dance, then Veterans Day, and Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving Dinner is being hosted by Art and Wanda Stanley. December brings us the Poker Run, Christmas Cantata, Golf Cart Parade, and Christmas Dinner. We are still looking for volunteers to host the Christmas Dinner.

At both the November and December HOA meetings you will be able to vote for Volunteer of the Year. The Volunteer of the Year will be announced at the Annual HOA meeting in January. This volunteer will have their name added to the Volunteer of the Year Plaque, receive $100, and admission for themselves and significant other to all HOA events.

At the Annual Meeting in January, we will be voting to accept the new revisions to our BYLAWS. A copy of the BYLAWS and a Review of the BYLAWS are hanging in the clubhouse. If you wish to have these emailed to you, please contact me. Also, we will be voting for three new Board Members. Nominations from the floor will only be done at the December HOA meeting.

It is again time to pay your Annual HOA dues ($15). Any Board member will accept your dues. Your dues must be paid by January 6, 2018 to be eligible to vote at the Annual HOA meeting.

So, dust off your dancing shoes and we will see you at the Harvest Dance.

MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR Joice Smith I would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.

I feel we have so much to be blessed for. As a community we made it through the hurricane with some damage but for the most part we were very lucky.

As we enter into the holiday season of Thanksgiving and Christmas please take a moment to think about those that are out keeping us safe and free. They will be away from their families during this holiday season, so I ask that we all say a prayer for them to keep them safe and out of harms way.

If you see a first responder, firefighter, police officer or a soldier, please stop and say “THANK YOU” for the sacrifice they make everyday to keep us safe.

A BEAUTIFUL THANKSGIVING STORY A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: "I am blind, please help."

There were only a few coins in the hat.

A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were.

The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, "Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?"

The man said, "I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way." I wrote: "Today is a beautiful day but I cannot see it."

Both signs told people that the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people that they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?

Moral of the Story: Be thankful for what you have. Be creative. Be innovative. Think differently and positively. When life gives you a 100 reasons to cry, show life that you have 1000 reasons to smile. Face your past without regret. Handle your present with confidence.

Prepare for the future without fear. Keep the faith and drop the fear.

The most beautiful thing is to see a person smiling. And even more beautiful, is knowing that you are the reason behind it!

MEDICARE 101

A big thank you to all the residents who came out for our Medicare 101 Seminar. We had 57 people in attendance and I believe everyone gained some helpful information. David did a great job sorting through the maze of information. He is open to personal one on one sessions if you need more assistance. Please contact me if you need additional questions or don’t have his contact information.

Veterans Day in the United States In the USA, Veterans Day annually falls on November 11. This day is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, which ended the World War I hostilities between the Allied nations and Germany in 1918.

Veterans are thanked for their services to the United States on Veterans Day.

Veterans Day honors those who served the United States in all wars, especially veterans.

Observance Veterans Day is intended to honor and thank all military personnel who served the United States in all wars, particularly living veterans. It is marked by parades and church services and in many places the American flag is hung at half mast. A period of silence lasting two minutes may be held at 11am.

Some schools are closed on Veterans Day, while others do not close, but choose to mark the occasion with special assemblies or other activities.

Veterans Day is officially observed on November 11.

However, if it falls on a week day, many communities hold their celebrations on the weekend closest to this date. This is to enable more people to attend and participate in the events. Federal Government offices are closed on November 11. If Veterans Day falls on a Saturday, they are closed on Friday November 10. If Veterans Day falls on a Sunday, they are closed on Monday November 12.

State and local governments, schools and nongovernmental businesses are not required to close and may decide to remain open or closed. Public transit systems may follow a regular or holiday schedule.

History On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 an armistice between Germany and the Allied nations came into effect. On November 11, 1919, Armistice Day was commemorated for the first time. In 1919, President Wilson proclaimed the day should be "filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory". There were plans for

parades, public meetings and a brief suspension of business activities at 11am.

In 1926, the United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I and declared that the anniversary of the armistice should be commemorated with prayer and thanksgiving. The Congress also requested that the president should "issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples."

An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) was approved on May 13, 1938, which made November 11 in each year a legal holiday, known as Armistice Day. This day was originally intended to honor veterans of World War I. A few years later, World War II required the largest mobilization of service men in the history of the United States and then American forces fought in Korea. In 1954, the veterans service organizations urged Congress to change the word "Armistice" to "Veterans".

Congress approved this change and on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor all American veterans, where ever and whenever they had served.

In 1968 the Uniforms Holiday Bill (Public Law 90-363 (82 Stat. 250)) made an attempt to move Veterans Day to the fourth Monday of October. The bill took effect in 1971. However, this caused a lot of confusion as many states disagreed with this decision and continued to hold Veterans Day activities on November 11. In 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed Public Law 94-97 (89 Stat. 479), which stated that Veterans Day would again be observed on November 11 from 1978 onwards. Veterans Day is still observed on November 11.

The Thanksgiving Story Most stories of Thanksgiving history start with the harvest celebration of the pilgrims and the Native Americans that took place in the autumn of 1621. Although they did have a three-day feast in celebration of a good harvest, and the local natives did participate, this “first thanksgiving” was not a holiday, simply a gathering. There is little evidence that this feast of thanks led directly to our modern Thanksgiving Day holiday. Thanksgiving can, however, be traced back to 1863 when Pres.

Lincoln became the first president to proclaim Thanksgiving Day. The holiday has been a fixture of late November ever since.

However, since most school children are taught that the first Thanksgiving was held in 1621 with the Pilgrims and Indians, let us take a closer look at just what took place leading up to that event, and then what happened in the centuries afterward that finally gave us our modern Thanksgiving.

The Pilgrims who sailed to this country aboard the Mayflower were originally members of the English Separatist Church (a Puritan sect). They had earlier fled their home in England and sailed to Holland (The Netherlands) to escape religious persecution. There, they enjoyed more religious tolerance, but they eventually became disenchanted with the Dutch way of life, thinking it ungodly. Seeking a better life, the Separatists negotiated with a London stock

company to finance a pilgrimage to America.

Most of those making the trip aboard the Mayflower were non-Separatists, but were hired to protect the company’s interests. Only about one-third of the original colonists were Separatists.

The Pilgrims set ground at Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620. Their first winter was devastating. At the beginning of the following fall, they had lost 46 of the original 102 who sailed on the Mayflower. But the harvest of 1621 was a bountiful one. And the remaining colonists decided to celebrate with a feast – including 91 natives who had helped the Pilgrims survive their first year. It is believed that the Pilgrims would not have made it through the year without the help of the natives. The feast was more of a traditional English harvest festival than a true “thanksgiving” observance. It lasted three days.

Governor William Bradford sent “four men fowling” after wild ducks and geese. It is not certain that wild turkey was part of their feast.

However, it is certain that they had venison. The term “turkey” was used by the Pilgrims to mean any sort of wild fowl.

Another modern staple at almost every Thanksgiving table is pumpkin pie. But it is unlikely that the first feast included that treat.

The supply of flour had been long diminished, so there was no bread or pastries of any kind.

However, they did eat boiled pumpkin, and they produced a type of fried bread from their corn crop. There was also no milk, cider, potatoes, or butter. There was no domestic cattle for dairy products, and the newly-discovered potato was

George Washington proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving in 1789, although some were opposed to it. There was discord among the colonies, many feeling the hardships of a few pilgrims did not warrant a national holiday. And later, President Thomas Jefferson opposed the idea of having a day of thanksgiving.

Cost is $5.00 per person per sheet. You will receive your poker hand sheet at the clubhouse and draw your first card. There will be six stops, at each stop you will draw a card and that card will be recorded on your sheet. You will return to the clubhouse and hand in your sheet to be validated. The last cart must be back at the clubhouse by 7:15pm. The cards will then be validated and winners announced.

There will be a Poker Run trivia contest during the event and a cash prize will be awarded.

You don’t have to know how to play Poker, we will check your hand for you. Come and enjoy this event with your neighbors.

At 7:00 PM the party begins at the clubhouse with the live music of “David Brown and Aggie Road”. Please bring your beverage of choice and snacks. Some light appetizers will be provided. This event is the Smith’s way of sharing their love of Christmas with their community. This event is FREE to all.

Annual Christmas Golf Cart Parade December 16th, 2017 Parade starts 6:30 PM White Elephant Gift exchange starts 7:30 PM (after the parade and judging) It's time to decorate those Golf Carts and get into the Christmas Spirit. Use your imagination and develop the most unique decorations that encompass the Christmas Spirit. We will be putting those carts on parade every night from 6:30 PM until ?, beginning December 10th and starting from the clubhouse, culminating with judging, awards and Christmas party on December 16th, 2017.

Brain Games For Seniors Play Brain Games to Improve Memory Power and Thinking Skills It is now scientifically proven that the brain starts deteriorating with age, and this process of aging begins from as early as 30. And, seniors will have to take extra care about their mental health, too besides their physical, to keep diseases such as dementia or Alzheimer’s at bay.

There is nothing like exercising the brain with frequent activity, challenging your brain with new activities, and keeping it going. Even the smallest of the activities such as looking at an old photograph album and recalling people or events, can be a great form of an exercise to your brain. Similarly, there are a plenty of online games that can help revive the brain activity for seniors.

Exercising the Brain with Games The normal activities of seniors should not be restricted to walking, watching television or reading a newspaper. It is always a better idea to indulge in those games for seniors that can revive brain cells and improve the efficiency to a large extent.
