Women’s Club

Southfork Women's Club Our April 5th meeting celebrated early Easter with pretty table decorations and a very special Easter luncheon. Our guest speaker was a representative of the United Way, who told us about calling 211 to find services that are available for all of us in Pasco County. Thanks to our survey Summer and Fall activities are being planned to be enjoyed by our membership. We will have a speaker regarding Medicare changes, an October Fest party, a Fashion Show in November and our annual Christmas party for our members to enjoy. Our Charity committee members will be scheduling speakers and things needed for the needy. Thanks to many of our gals, who created many very different Easter Hats. Our hostesses, Diane Unger, Pat Guyette and Kathy Myers volunteered to be our judges. Thanks to Carol Withbeck for taking pictures. Winners of The Easter hat contest were Dodie King, Mary Jean Barber and Carol Albers. We welcomed new residents, signed "Thinking of You" cards" . Jean Bittman and Diane Stricklen told us about their nursing home visit with one of our resident. Carol Withbeck reported that 35 Easter Baskets for kids and 19 bags of food, Donated by our generous Women, were delivered. As always, ladies attending our meeting brought at least 2 cans of food each to go to Day Star. Before the luncheon was served Diane Unger and Lynda Adams entertained us with an Easter Egg game and Easter and Old TV Trivia questions. We will begin our summer schedule at the VILLAGE INN, May 3rd luncheon. PLEASE sign up!

Safe travels, Dot

AWESOME THOUGHT OF BEING A MOTHER ( MOM with degrees)

Hey Mom, So after last night I was thinking about how lucky I am to have you. It occurred to me that you always say you wish you had college or found your talent. Well, I found them for you and I can’t believe you never realized it.          

Raising good children (Childhood Development Major) Managing and organizing events (Management) Teaching CCD to all your children (Teaching Degree and Teacher) Consoling (Psychiatrist) Helping with English (English, Teacher, Proofreader) Best I’ve ever seen at creating crafts…even better than the catalogues..honestly(Art, Artist) Cooking (Culinary Arts) Meeting and getting people to like you (Social light, Sociology) Gardening (Environmental Science) Being a mom…..not just good (Unforgettable)

I’ll never forget you for what you have done for me and no degree teaches that no profession compares to that. Neighbor Watch Alert

Just a word to the wise………………Do you have a “ watch code” with your neighbors in case of an emergency? This is especially for those that live alone and a sort of a “watch out for one another”. A suggestion would be for each neighbor to look out in case any of you need help and this goes for all residents. If you have a certain window that has a blind you close at dark and open in the morning when you awake……………well let your neighbor know that if it Is not opened by a certain time in the morning to immediately call you to make sure everything is okay. Make a plan as to whom your neighbor should call if this should happen. Should they be able to enter your home or should 911 be called? It has been noted that many who live alone do not wear a “life alert” so that emergency can be called immediately if help is needed. There are many here in Southfork who do not interact with neighbors and if it looks like no one is moving around and their car is still in the driveway, it could mean trouble. So as a word to the wise…….start an emergency action code to avoid any problems that can be avoided. Thanks, Phyllis

Quilters

Quilters are taking the summer off! We will start our regular meeting on September 13, 2017. Watch for updates in the newsletter. Have a great summer!

Tribute to Willie Submitted by, Marielle Quain When we moved here in July 1996, you were already a resident in this community. Bill Weir who was the manager at the time suggested that we should go to potluck to meet our neighbors. It was the 4th of July and that’s how we met you. The park was half full of homes so we were told by the Heiler’s if we would sell some homes we will get a commission. I know that you sold a few at the time and we knew everyone. One day the ladies were doing some crafts and Bill Weir came out of his office and said ladies, why don’t you start a women’s club and he donated $5.00 and the womens club was born and you were there and gave us your support and we could always count on you. Do you remember when 3 residents. Winnie Simmons, Elly and Esther Raisenan were killed in an accident? I was president of the women’s club at the time so I called a meeting and of course you were there. All the ladies supported us to organize a memorial for these ladies….so the Memorial Committee was born. You were there volunteering your services as always. Yes, we did a lot of things in this community. I remembered when you put on a show that was a success. After a few years I did a show called the “Recycled Teenagers” and Smokey, do you remember you were one of the actors and you were very good in your role as a teenager. And….life went on with Willie playing lots of cards, poker, euchre, pinochle, hand and foot and so much more and were participating as much as you could and we could always count on you while Smokey was enjoying shuffleboard as a pro because he was so good. You like bingo and were very lucky at it. Thanks for supporting my bingo and I could always count on you because you were a fantastic neighbor. We wish you a nice life with your family and hope you will keep in contact with your Southfork family. God bless you……………

Farewell to Smokey & Willie Article and photo’s submitted by Kathy Gallick

A bitter-sweet farewell offered to our wonderful friends and neighbors. Happy they will be beginning a new chapter in their lives. Thanks for all the good times, hard work, and fond memories. God's speed Willie and Smokey. Be well and keep in touch, you will be missed. God Bless America!

Great send off for our great friends and neighbor………Willie & Smokey Stoever

Why Recycle?

Everyone should believe in ecology and environment and recycling is a big part of that. Southfork Homeowners Association has had a recycling program for years, but the volume has fallen way off. The recycling container for both aluminum cans and paper is at the dead end of Ewing Dr. As you will note on the following pages the type of paper products that can be recycled has really increased. Probably every resident of South Fork uses a recyclable paper product every day. So recycle it, don’t throw it away. Its noted that on Wednesday recycle day some people put out aluminum cans for pick up. From the county, Southfork gets nothing, so instead support the Southfork HOA recycling program. This is an easy way for you to recycle your newspaper, cardboard, magazines, junk mail , office paper , phone books and paper bags every day of the week and it helps raise money for our Southfork community for various projects and other worthwhile activities. PLEASE, NO PLASTIC BAGS! We earn money for Southfork community for paper placed in the blue mix paper recycling bin at our location. Garbage isn’t garbage, it’s a product waiting to happen…………….. So please recycle, “The Recycle Man”

Southfork HOA is collecting Aluminum Cans, Newspaper and magazines. Please use the recycling bins in the storage area!

Aluminum Recycling Facts: A used aluminum can is recycled and back on the grocery shelf as a new can, in as little as 60 days. That's closed loop recycling as its finest!. Used aluminum beverage cans are the most recycled item in the U.S., but other types of aluminum, such as siding, gutters, car components, storm windows frames, and lawn furniture can also be recycled. Recycling one aluminum can save enough energy to run a TV for three hours -- or the equivalent of a half a gallon of gasoline. More aluminum goes into beverage cans than any other product. Because so many of them are recycled, aluminum cans account for less than 1% of the total U.S. waste stream, according to EPA estimates. An aluminum can that is thrown away will still be a can, 500 years from now!

Paper Recycling Facts: To produce each week's Sunday newspapers, 500,000 trees must be cut down. Recycling a single run of the Sunday New York Times would save 75,000 trees. If all our newspapers was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year. If every American recycled just one-tenth of their newspaper, we would save about 25,000,000 trees a year. The average American uses seven trees a year in paper, wood, and other products made from trees, This amounts to about 2,000,000,000 trees per year. Each ton (2000 pounds) of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4000 kilowatts of energy, and 7000 gallons of water. This represents a 64% energy savings, a 58% water savings, and 60 pounds less of air pollution!

We can recycle office paper, newspaper, cardboard, magazines, junk mail, plastic bottles and jugs (with #1 and 2 on bottom). QUALITY IS THE KEY!

CLEAN, DRY PAPER, PLASTIC BOTTLES & JUGS ONLY!

MIXED PAPER AND PLASTIC RECYCLING Accepted:           

Newspapers and inserts, non-metallic gift wrap and greeting cards Plastic bottles and jugs with #1 and #2 on bottom and put in plastic bags White, colored, and glossy paper without food residue Junk mail, envelopes (plastic windows okay), padded and Tyvek mailing envelopes Catalogs, magazines, phone books, paperback and hardback books Computer, plain fax paper, thermal fax paper, carbon paper, and shredded paper NCR paper, paper ream wrappers, manila folder, and hanging files Construction art paper (less than 50% painted) Paper egg cartons, frozen food boxes/cartons, cereal and cake mix boxes (liners removed) Paper bags, store receipts, self stick notes, and shoe or clothing boxes Staples, paper clips, labels and tape are okay

Not Accepted:      

Food contaminated paper, plastic, foil, or paper covered with paint or pet waste Milk, soy, juice cartons or pouches, food and candy wrappers, snack or potato chip bags Foil, glass, metals, and film plastic (e.g., plastic bags, bubble wrap) Beverage cups, coffee cups, tissues, paper towels, and paper plates Donut boxes, fast food cups, take out containers/wrappers Foam egg cartons, ice cream cartons and pizza boxes

Please remember, with your recycling efforts, 17 trees and 4000 gallons of water are saved for every ton of paper recycled.
