Message from the President......

Dear Friends and Neighbors, As I write this, we are nearly through November and rapidly approaching the holidays.

November, as always, has been an extremely busy month, starting with the 1st Annual Golf Cart Poker Run(more later in this month's Gator Tales), our Veteran's Day Celebration, the Fall Yard Sale, the annual Harvest Dance and our Thanksgiving Dinner. I would like to extend a big “Thank You� to all those who participated in and helped make these events a success. This year, we had the opportunity of having our Thanksgiving Dinner completely catered and paid for by your Lake Hammock Village Homeowners Association. This event was completely free for all of our current residents, whether or not they had paid their annual HOA dues or not. This was just one example of all the activities that the HOA supports throughout the year. There are many others, though they are too numerous to list here. The reason I take the time to mention this is that the time to pay your annual dues is now. The dues are $15.00 per year which goes to support the many events held and either sponsored or supported by your HOA. It is the BOD's stance this year that we will NOT be going door to door to solicit dues.

Therefore, if it is your intention to pay them, please contact Richard Gould, our HOA Treasurer or any board member. Please remember, that everything that goes on in the park is touched in some way by the HOA and the dues that you pay, so please help us to insure many more successful activities by participating.

In closing, we have a lot of new folks moving into our community so please take the time to extend a warm smile, a friendly handshake, and make them feel welcome in their new home.

On behalf of the HOA, let me extend a heartfelt wish for the upcoming Christmas season. We hope everyone has a safe and blessed holiday season with family and friends.

Also, let's not forget those who have afforded us the opportunity to celebrate the season.

On November 19th, the Lake Hammock Village Homeowners Association hosted our annual “Harvest Dance”! I believe it was the most successful of the “Harvest Dances” we have hosted yet. We were completely sold out with only “Standing Room Only” tickets left. Everyone had a great time and it was the first time that I can remember that 90% of everyone stayed until the final note was played. To put on such an event requires an extremely large amount of work so I want to thank each and everyone of you who assisted. I especially want to thank all of the folks who came out on Sunday morning to help with cleanup. What a great job; everything cleaned up and put away within an hour! Kudos to our community for coming together as a team to put on the event, to help with the event, and to support the event!

Lake Hammock Village will now be participating in the year round collection of nonperishable food, toiletries, and monetary donations. We will be donating all the items to House Blessed of Haines City.

House Blessed is a program supported by 5 churches in the area. They provide service (including clothing) to about 600 families a month.

It’s open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12-3 pm.

Each family is accounted for and only allowed to visit on visit per month.

You will find a container for donations in the small room of the clubhouse. Monetary donations will be greatly appreciated, also and should be given directly to Fred or Jeanne Blicker. The reason that money is important is that food may be purchased at a warehouse for a special price (now 17 cents per pound) which is much less per pound than we could buy in a market.

In the clubhouse, you will also find a chart where we will periodically display the progress we have made in pounds donated. We will also convert any monetary donations into pounds of goods by considering the price that will be paid at the warehouse.

business in Colorado. Their daughter is a civil engineer and was in charge of all the ground work for the Patriot’s Stadium. Fred got to see the progress enfold there. They also have eight grandchildren.

Fred and Jeanne Blicker Fred and Jeanne Blicker met on a blind date that Fred’s brother arranged. There was only one problem. Jeanne didn’t like the out of style tie Fred was wearing. She must have changed her mind though, because they were married two years later and are about to celebrate their 54th anniversary in a few months.

They spent their newlywed years in Connecticut.

Previously, Fred spent four years in the Navy Seabees and then worked in construction of various types. He later owned his own handyman business and has kept busy here in LHV with remodeling projects. Jeanne dreams up the project and Fred brings it to life with her help. Fred is proud of the fact that his grandfather and father were butchers.

He says he is the son of a butcher.

Jeanne grew up in New Haven, CT. She obtained her teaching degree and taught until the children came along, then substituted while they grew up.

Later on she taught for 18 ½ years in special education math in a residential childcare school for boys who had mostly been sent there to serve out their parole.

Fred and Jeanne have four children, three boys and one girl. Two of the families are in New York, one son in CT and one son in Colorado. One of their sons is a sound engineer with three studios in Manhattan. He writes music for TV and movies. He wrote the music for “The View”. One son is a “flower child” who continues to go to work and plug along. The other son is an electrician with his own

In 2002, Fred and Jeanne sold the CT home and lived in a fifth wheel for 14 years snow birding to Florida, and taking long trips every three or four years. They have spent time in 48 states, Mexico and Canada. As the years added on, they would have loved to continue traveling, but their bodies had had enough. A couple of years ago they met Randy and Pat Bergstrom at Kissimmee South in Davenport and decided to also move here to LHV after the Bergstroms had done the research of many parks.

They have been members of the Habitat for Humanity Care-A-Vanners. That is RVers who build homes throughout the country, but they both have big smiles on their faces when talking about their volunteer time at Give Kids The World, a short stay village for chronically and critically ill children near Disney World. Scooping ice cream and working in the gingerbread house or manning the carousel were their favorite jobs. GKTW grants each deserving family a villa, park tickets, free meals, gifts, etc. for an entire week. Families from all over the world are guests there.

Jeanne studies genealogy and has gone back to the 1700s on Fred’s side and the 1800s on her side. She also enjoys supervising Fred’s remodeling projects, watching movies and doing word puzzles. They both play CLR and dominoes, and on summer afternoons they can be found in the pool.

While interviewing the Blickers I learned that they are beginning a year round collection box for House Blessed. See their article for details.

Christmas is a special time for the Blickers. They delight in being part of the LHV family and appreciated the family of wonderful folks here with whom they can make new memories.

When you see them out in their Blickermobile, be sure to take a moment to meet your neighbors.

The first team to earn 13 points wins the game RULES OF THE GAME: The game is played by 2 teams of 1, 2, 3 or 4 players.

Teams of 1 or 2 players use 3 boules per player. Teams of 3 or 4 use 2 boules per player.

Toss a coin to choose which team will start. This player tosses the little target ball, jack, pass the half way point.

Any player from this team then throws the first boule, trying to place it as close as possible to the target ball.

A player of the second team tries to throw a boule even closer to the target ball or knocks away the first team's leading boule. The boule nearest to the target ball leads.

It's up to the team not leading to throw until they get a leading boule. Then it's up to the other team again.

When a team has no boules left, the other team throws their remaining boules and tries to place them as close as possible to the target ball.

WHAT ON EARTH IS PETANQUE? Petanque, pronouned "pay-tonk", one of Europe's most popular outdoor games, is a cousin of both horseshoes and of the Italian bowling game called 'bocce'. The game originated in the South of France in the early 1900's. It is quickly becoming very popular in America as it has done all over the world. It can be played by everyone no matter their age or athletic ability.

The aim is to toss a number of hollow steel balls ("boules") as close as possible to a small wooden target ball, called a jack. Players take turns and the team that ends up nearest to the target ball when all balls are played, wins. Unlike horseshoes, where the aim stake is fixed, the target ball can be hit (and thus moved) at any time, which can totally upset the score at the last second.

To play Petanque, players divide up into two teams.

After deciding who goes first, a player throws the jack, the target players aim for. The rest of the game is spent trying to throw your boules closer to the jack than the

When neither team has any boules left the points are counted. Only the leading team scores: as many points as it has boules that are closer to the target than the best one of the losing team.

The game continues until one of the teams has accumulated 13 points The winning team starts at the other end tossing the target ball again.

The rules of the game are easy to learn. The challenge comes in trying to master your throwing skills. Whether you are a newbie or a master, you never get tired of perfecting your game.

AT THE PETANQUE COURT There is a rake to even out the divots in the court at the end of each round. In the box are balls for you to play/practice at any time. Also in the box, are Lysol

disinfectants, Wet Ones, paper towels, band aids, and After Bite.

MEMORIES OF CHRISTMAS IN ENGLAND BY: JUDY PAGE Christmas in England is a joyous time celebrated much like ours. Missing are American Christmas cookies, fudge, cheeseballs, and until recently, candy canes. But the appearance of Christmas is much the same. Streets, shops and the insides of English homes are gaily decorated. People are very keen on sending and receiving Christmas cards that then are displayed on strings hung along the walls of their homes. In the last ten years or so more people are decorating the outsides of their homes and their gardens.

Santa grottos are everywhere for children to tell Father Christmas what they want him to bring them for being good children. He gives coal to naughty children. On Christmas Eve the children leave mince pies, and sometimes a tot of whiskey for Father Christmas and carrots for the reindeer. He sometimes leaves their gifts in a pillow case at the foot of their bed.

Christmas hampers are popular in England.

Payments often are made throughout the year for the hampers that are delivered in time for Christmas. They include many tasty English Christmas treats. Treats in the hampers, or just bought in the shops for the season include cheese boards that include a variety of different cheeses.

Big tins of biscuits (cookies in America) covered in thick chocolates, big tins of individually wrapped chocolates, beautifully decorated Christmas cakes (fruit cakes) and every size of Christmas plum puddings you could want are beloved treats. It is the only time of year I could find special kinds of crackers and pretzel snack mixes. Nuts also are also very popular during the season. The most abundant treat seems to be the little individual mince pies or tarts. They are readily offered to any guest. My bank even offered a mince pie to me when I went inside!

People love to go to restaurants and pubs for work parties. In addition to lots of alcoholic drinks, these usually include a turkey dinner with stuffing, gravy, roast potatoes, bacon wrapped chipolata sausages, cranberry sauce and the ever beloved Brussel sprouts. Christmas cake or Christmas plum pudding with custard or brandy sauce rounds out the meal.

Before eating, guests pull Christmas crackers that make a bang sound, spilling the contents that include a paper crown that is worn during the meal, little gifts, sometime a horn to blow and always a ridiculous and silly joke that must be read aloud to the other guests. They also have party poppers to shoot off that leave strings of paper all across the tables. Christmas crackers also are very popular at family dinners on Christmas day.

One notable difference in the Christmas tradition between our countries is the Christmas Pantomime they love. These are theatre productions of stories such as “Puss and Boots”, “Cinderella”, and “Aladdin”. There always is an over-the-top Dame, a man dressed as a rather ugly woman, who encourages audience participation throughout the play. These performances carry into the New Year and are great fun. They can be a little “risqué, such is the British humor, but not so much that children understand the innuendoes.

The bigger difference in the celebrations is that in England the day after Christmas also is a national band holiday. If Christmas is on a Friday or Saturday, Boxing Day is the Monday after Christmas. Boxing Day had nothing to do with sparring or fighting. During the mid-1800’s the wealthy middle class employed many people to run the businesses and homes. Staff had to work hard all year and especially on Christmas Day. The day after Christmas was the day the employers gave the ‘boxes’, or gifts to their staff. They also gave boxes to tradespeople with whom they did business throughout the previous year. So as to give the staff a little more of a break, the meal for the wealthy this day was usually more of a buffet instead of a sit down dinner. Buffet dinners, using the leftovers from Christmas dinner and perhaps a

few more treats, like prawns or meat pies, are the usual fare for Boxing Day dinners now, too.

Yes, Christmas in England is a joyous time. But, like it seems here, the real reason for Christmas, the celebration of God’s gift to us of his beloved son Jesus Christ, seems somewhat lost in the celebrating. England is a very multi-cultural country. During the season I see people of all faiths joining in the cultural celebration of Christmas even if not for the religious reason. Everything that unites a country and helps people get along and respect each other like I see happening during this time, is a good thing and must be joyously celebrated.

THE CHRISTMAS CANDY CANE The Christmas Candy Cane originated in Germany about 250 years ago. They started as straight white sugar sticks.

A story says that a choirmaster, in 1670, was worried about the children sitting quietly all through the long Christmas nativity service. So he gave them something to eat to keep them quiet! As he wanted to remind them of Christmas, he made them into a 'J' shape like a shepherds crook, to remind them of the shepherds that visited the baby Jesus at the first christmas. However, the earliest records of 'candy canes' comes from over 200 years later, so the story, although rather nice, probably isn't true!

Sometime around 1900 the red stripes were added and they were flavored with peppermint or wintergreen.

Sometimes other Christian meanings are giving to the parts of the canes. The 'J' can also mean Jesus.

The white of the cane can represent the purity of Jesus Christ and the red stripes are for the blood He shed when He died on the cross. The peppermint flavor can represent the hyssop plant that was used for purifying in the Bible.

Around 1920, Bob McCormack, from Georgia, USA, started making canes for his friends and family. They became more and more popular and he started his own business called Bob's Candies. Bob McCormack's brother-in-law, Gregory Harding Keller, who was a Catholic priest, invented the Keller Machine that made turning straight candy sticks into curved candy canes automatic! In 2005, Bob's Candies was bought by Farley and Sathers who they still make candy canes

By Birgit Bartoschek First I would like to thank all dogs and dog owners for participation in Lake Hammocks first Doggy Halloween Costume Contest and Bark or Treat walk.

I baked some special Dog cookies for the winners and the parade.

It seems like a lot of dogs liked them.

So I ask my dogs Lucy and Belle and they agreed to share the recipe for their dog friends:

Peanut butter Dog Cookies: ¾ cup whole Milk 1 cup Peanut butter 1 Tablespoon Baking powder 3 cups Whole wheat flower Set oven to 325o First whisk the milk with the peanut butter.

Mix the baking powder with the flower.

Now add the Peanut Butter mix to the Flower, use the dough hook on your mixer.

Roll dough to 1/2" thickness. Cut with cookie cutters or a pizza cutter.

Tip: if the dough seems to be too dry just add some milk and or Canola oil.

If the dough is to wet, just add more flower Baking time is 30 min, test the cookies after 30 min if they feel still soft add more time and check back. Each oven is different.

The Holiday season is here.

Is it time for you and your dogs to get the Family Photo taken?

Here are some tips to make the best out of your time and money you spend with a professional Pet Photographer.

Make your trip to the Photographer a very positive experience.

You can start training your dog getting used to a camera by rewarding them for just showing interest in a Camera or phone with treats.

Just sniffing or approaching the object is a” good boy” followed by a cookie.

By doing this consistently your pup will start seeing the camera as a way to get a reward, and the photos will reflect their happiness.

If I need my dogs to look toward the Camera I stay behind the Photographer with their favorite toy or cookie. It is important not to stay next to the camera, the eyes, head and body posture might goes in the wrong direction.

Don’t forget to reward your dog during the session not just tease him all the time.

Give your dog a break if you are planning for a longer session.

For restless dogs, I recommend to use a pedestal of any kind. For example a chair or couch gives the Photographer that window of time before they jump down.

Their favorite cushion or a blanket might calm your dog down as well.

Again a training session with sit/stay commands might be a good preparation.

And my last tip: Do you have an energetic or nervous dog? Please go for a good long walk before the session. That will take the energy to a lower level.

Exploring Florida Wildlife......

The North American reindeer, Rangifer tarandus, also known as Caribou in North America, is a species rarely seen in Central Florida, except during a very small timeframe in December.

Reindeer are highly prized for their meat, hides, milk, and antlers and both males and female can grow antlers. Because Rangifer tarandus can be found throughout the world, they easily adapt to whichever environment they may live. Antlers on old males fall off in December, young males in early spring, and females in summer. Reindeer hooves adapt to the season as well: in the summer, their footpads become soft and spongy. In the winter, the pads shrink and tighten, exposing the rim of the hoof, which might explain the “clatter” upon the roof.

Size of reindeer antlers plays a significant role in establishing hierarchy in the herd. When migrating, herds can travel up to 34 miles per day and 3000 miles per year.

Legend has it that during a small time frame in late December, a small herd can be seen pulling a sleigh, of all things, throughout Central Florida. The herd is led by an extremely rare breed of reindeer known as Rangifer tarandus red nasus, Latin for “reindeer with a red nose” and the sleigh is piloted by a jovial senior citizen wearing a red suit and a long white beard.

As strange as this may seem, it has been reported for hundreds of years, yet few have witnessed it. So, as we get closer to late December, keep a wary eye out for this rare breed and this jovial gentleman. Look towards the sky and on the rooftops and don't be surprised at what you might see or hear.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

The Christmas Story Long ago, about 2000 years, when King Herod ruled Judea (now part of Israel), God sent the angel Gabriel to a young woman who lived in the northern town of Nazareth. The girl's name was Mary and she was engaged to marry Joseph.

The angel Gabriel said to Mary: 'Peace be with you! God has blessed you and is pleased with you.' Mary was very surprised by this and wondered what the angel meant. The angel said to her 'Don't be afraid, God has been very kind to you. You will become pregnant by the Holy Spirit and give birth to a baby boy and you will call him Jesus. He will be God's own Son and His kingdom will never end.' Mary was very afraid but she trusted God. 'Let it happen as God chooses.' she replied to the angel. Gabriel also told Mary that her cousin, Elizabeth who everyone thought was too old to have children, would have a baby boy whom God had chosen to prepare the way for Jesus.

Mary said goodbye to her family and friends and went to visit her cousin Elizabeth and her husband Zechariah. Elizabeth was very happy to see Mary. She knew that Mary had been chosen

by God to be the mother of His Son. An angel had already told Zechariah that Elizabeth's baby would prepare people to welcome Jesus. He was to be called John. Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months and then returned home to Nazareth.

Joseph was worried when he found out that Mary was expecting a baby before their marriage had taken place. He wondered if he should put off the wedding altogether. Then an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and said: 'Don't be afraid to have Mary as your wife.' The angel explained that Mary had been chosen by God to be the mother ofHis Son and told Joseph that the baby would be named Jesus which means 'Saviour' because He would save people.

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel had told him to do and took Mary as his wife.

At this time, the land where Mary and Joseph lived was part of the Roman Empire. The Roman Emperor Augustus wanted to have a list of all the people in the empire, to make sure they paid their taxes. He ordered everyone to return to the town where their families originally came from, and enter their names in a register (or census) there. Mary and Joseph travelled a long way (about 70 miles) from Nazareth to Bethlehem, because that is where Joseph's family came from. Most people walked but some lucky people had a donkey to help carry the goods needed for the journey. Joseph and Mary travelled very slowly because Mary's baby was due to be born soon.

When they reached Bethlehem they had problems finding somewhere to stay. So many people had come to register their names in the census, that every house was full and every bed was taken in all of the guest rooms. The only place to stay that they could find was with the animals. People often kept animals in the house, especially at night, and used them like 'central heating'! People normally slept on a raised/upper level with the animals below to give them extra warmth.

So in the place where the animals slept, Mary gave birth to Jesus, the Son of God. In those days it was the custom to wrap newborn babies tightly in a long cloth called 'swaddling clothes'. Jesus' bed was the manger that the animals ate their hay from.

In the hills and fields outside Bethlehem, shepherds looked after their sheep through the long night. As the new day began, suddenly an angel appeared before them and the glory of God shone around them. The shepherds were very, very scared, but the angel said, 'Don't be afraid. I have good news for you and everyone.

Today in Bethlehem a Saviour has been born for you. You will find the baby lying in a manger.'.

Then many more angels appeared, lighting up the sky. The shepherds heard them praising God singing: 'Glory to God in highest, and peace to everyone on earth.' When the angels had gone

the shepherds said to one another, 'Let's go to Bethlehem to see what has happened.' So the shepherds went to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph. The baby Jesus was lying in a manger as they had been told. When they saw Him, they told everyone what the angel had said and everyone who heard the story were astonished. Then the shepherds returned to their sheep, praising God for sending His Son to be their Saviour.

When Jesus was born, a brand new bright star appeared in the sky. Some Wise Men in faraway countries saw the star and guessed what it meant. They were very clever men that studied the stars and had read in very old writings that a new star would appear when a great king was born. They set out to find the new king and bring him gifts.

The Wise Men followed the star towards the country of Judea and when they got to the capital called Jerusalem they began to ask people: 'Where is the child who is born to be king of the Jews?' Herod, the king of Judea, heard this and it made him very angry to think that someone might be going to take his place as king. Herod sent for the Wise Men to come to him. He told them to go on following the star until they had found the baby king. He said: 'When you have found Him, let me know where hE is, so that I can go and worship him.'. But Herod did not tell them that he really had an evil plan in mind to kill the new king.

The Wise Men followed the star towards Bethlehem (where it said that the king would be born in the old writings). It seemed to stop and shine directly down upon the place where Jesus was.

The Wise Men entered the house and found Jesus with Mary, they bowed down and worshipped Him. The Wise Men spread the gifts they had brought before Jesus. The gifts were gold, frankincense and myrrh. The Wise Men were warned in a dream, by God, not to go back to Herod. So they returned home to their countries in the East by a different way.

When the Wise Men had gone, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream. 'Get up,' the angel said, 'take Jesus and Mary and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for Jesus to kill Him. So Joseph got up, took Jesus and Mary during the night they left for Egypt, where He stayed until Herod died.

When Herod realized that he had been tricked by the Wise Men, he was furious and he gave orders to kill all the boys aged two or younger in Bethlehem and the surrounding area. This was to try and kill the new king, as his plan to find the location of the new king from the Wise Men had failed.

After Herod had died, Joseph had another dream in which an angel appeared to him. The angel said, 'Get up, take Jesus and Mary and go back to Israel, for those who were trying kill Jesus are dead.'

So Joseph got up, took Jesus and Mary and they went back to Israel. But when he heard that Herod's son was now king of Judea, he was afraid to go there. So instead they went to Galilee, and lived in their old town of Nazareth.

In the Northern hemisphere, the shortest day and longest night of the year falls on December 21 or December 22 and is called the winter solstice. Many ancient people believed that the sun was a god and that winter came every year because the sun god had become sick and weak. They celebrated the solstice because it meant that at last the sun god would begin to get well. Evergreen boughs reminded them of all the green plants that would grow again when the sun god was strong and summer would return.

The ancient Egyptians worshipped a god called Ra, who had the head of a hawk and wore the sun as a blazing disk in his crown. At the solstice, when Ra began to recover from the illness, the Egyptians filled their homes with green palm rushes which symbolized for them the triumph of life over death.

Early Romans marked the solstice with a feast called the Saturnalia in honor of Saturn, the god

Germany is credited with starting the Christmas tree tradition as we now know it in the 16th century when devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Some built Christmas pyramids of wood and decorated them with evergreens and candles if wood was scarce. It is a widely held belief that Martin Luther, the 16th-century Protestant reformer, first added lighted candles to a tree. Walking toward his home one winter evening, composing a sermon, he was awed by the brilliance of stars twinkling amidst evergreens.

To recapture the scene for his family, he erected a tree in the main room and wired its branches with lighted candles.

Most 19th-century Americans found Christmas trees an oddity. The first record of one being on display was in the 1830s by the German settlers of Pennsylvania, although trees had been a tradition in many German homes much earlier.

The Pennsylvania German settlements had community trees as early as 1747. But, as late as the 1840s Christmas trees were seen as pagan symbols and not accepted by most Americans.

Wards went on to print “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer� and distribute it to children visiting Santa Claus in their stores. By 1946 Wards had printed and distributed more than six million copies of Rudolph. That same year, a major publisher wanted to purchase the rights from Wards to print an updated version of the book.

The gift of love that Bob May created for his daughter so long ago kept on returning back to bless him again and again. And Bob May learned the lesson, just like his dear friend Rudolph, that being different isn't so bad, in fact, being different can be a blessing.

No one knows for sure when or who invented the tamale, but we do know tamales have been written about since preColumbian days. In the 1550's, the Aztecs served the Spaniards tamales during their visits to Mexico. Tamales were also eaten by soldiers on their lengthly sojourns since

The Christmas Pickle The tradition of the Christmas Pickle has got to be one of the strangest modern Christmas customs in that no one is quite sure why it exists at all!

In the 1880s Woolworth stores started selling glass ornaments imported from Germany and some were in the shape of various fruit and vegetables. It seems that pickles must have been among the selection!

Around the same time it was claimed that the Christmas Pickle was a very old German tradition and that the pickle was the last ornament hung on the Christmas tree and then the first child to find the pickle got an extra present.

However, the claim that it's an old German tradition seems to be a total myth! Not many people in Germany have even heard of the Christmas Pickle! (Similarly in Russia virtually no one knows the supposedly Russian story of Babushka!)

Some families now have the tradition of hanging the pickle on the tree, with the first person/child to find it getting a present. But it probably didn't start in Germany!

There are two other rather far-fetched stories linking the pickle to Christmas.

One features a fighter in the American Civil War who was born in Bavaria (an area of what is now Germany). He was a prisoner, and starving, he begged a guard for one last pickle before he died. The guard took pity on him and gave a pickle to him. The pickle

gave him the mental and physical strength to live on!

The other story is linked to St. Nicholas. It's a medieval tale of two Spanish boys traveling home from a boarding school for the holidays. When they stopped at an inn for the night, the evil innkeeper, killed the boys and put them in a pickle barrel. That evening, St. Nicholas stopped at the same inn, and found the boys in the barrel and miraculously bought them back to life!

There is an old legend about St. Nicholas rescuing boys from a barrel but the barrel was originally holding meat for pies - not pickles!

So it's most likely that an ornament salesmen, with a lot of spare pickles to sell, invented the legend of the Christmas Pickle!

The American city of Berrien Springs, MI (also known as the Christmas Pickle Capital of the World) has an annual pickle festival held during the early part of December.

October 30th, a beautiful sunny afternoon at Lake Hammock Village. The birds are singing and the dogs are barking. Wait a minute why are the dogs barking? Halloween came to our community and to the dogs.

21 brave dogs got into their costumes and characters and started a new tradition at LHV, the Halloween Bark or Treat Costume Contest. How much fun was had to see all the owners smiling and dogs in the pretties, scariest costumes walking down the Cat, ahm no Dog walk.

Princesses, butterflies, devils, pirates, southern ladies, hot dogs-no-mustard and so many pretty costumes were gracefully presented by the fur-kids.

Everyone voted for the three best costumes. We celebrated the proud winner and runner ups, Charlie (1st place), Gracie (2nd place) and Klohe (3rd place).

To finish a wonderful afternoon, the residents had some cookies waiting at their driveways for the neighborhood “Bark or Treat” parade so all doggies got rewarded for the patience.
