In the Georgian calendar, the calendar that most of the world uses, June is the sixth month. However, according to the early Roman calendar, June was actually the fourth month and had only 29 day. In 46B.C, Julius Caesar gave June 30 days instead of 29 when he reformed the Roman calendar. June is named for the Roman goddess Juno. The month of June is a popular month for weddings, perhaps because Juno was the goddess of marriage. In June, spring ends and summer begins in the Northern Hemisphere. During this time, all the flowers and plants are very beautiful. In the southern hemisphere, winter begins in June. The traditional birthstone for June is the pearl. It is a symbol of purity and is the only gem that comes from living sea creatures. Alexandrite is an alternate birthstone for June. This unique gemstone changes color depending on the lighting conditions. It is greenish brown in color when exposed to daylight and fluorescent light, but changes to a purple reddish hue by incandescent or candlelight. It is a symbol of joy and good fortune. Another alternate birthstone for June is moonstone. It is considered a sacred stone in India. Moonstone varies in color from clear to bluish white or peach. It is a symbol of health and longevity. The flower for the month of June is the rose. Roses are a symbol of love and appreciation. They are also known as the flower of passion. Roses come in a wide variety of colors. Each color has a different meaning. Red roses symbolize love, white roses symbolize innocence and purity, and light pink roses are a symbol of admiration or sympathy.

Gemini and Cancer are the astrological signs for June. Birthdays from June 1st through the 20th fall under the sign of Gemini. June 21st through the 30th birthdays fall under the sign of Cancer. Gemini is the third sign of the zodiac, and those born under this sign will be quick to tell you all about it. That's because they love to talk! It's not just idle chatter with these folks, either. The driving force behind a Gemini's conversation is their mind. The Gemini-born are intellectually inclined, forever probing people and places in search of information. Cancer, the fourth sign of the zodiac, is all about home. Those born under this sign are 'roots' kinds of people, and take great pleasure in the comforts of home and family. Cancers are maternal, domestic and love to nurture others. Cancers will certainly be merry if their home life is serene and harmonious. Traditions are upheld with great zest in a Cancer's household, since these folks prize family history and love communal activities. They also tend to be patriotic, waving the flag whenever possible. A Cancer's good memory is the basis for stories told around the dinner table, and don't be surprised if these folks get emotional about things. Those born under this sign wear their heart on their sleeve, which is just fine by them.
June Holidays and Observances Flag Day is celebrated on June 14th each year. It is the anniversary of the United States flag which dates back to 1777.
Father's Day is the most well known holiday that takes place on June 15th.
In the northern hemisphere, the summer solstice occurs and summer begins. This takes place on June 21st.

From the desk of Richard Spiegel As you all probably know Terry and I pick up the aluminum cans every Tuesday morning. The other day I ran across a lot of Dr Pepper cans. This was very nice except for one thing. 99% of the cans had straws stuffed down inside of the can. When this happens they can’t be recycled as foreign materials in the can mess up the melting process of the aluminum. I would appreciate it if you would remove any straws and put them in the regular trash from now on. Thanks for understanding. Richard
