When you think about the month of June, do thoughts of Father's Day and summer vacations come to mind? There is a lot more to June than deciding what gift to get your father or where to go for your summer vacation. There are other holidays during the month, many famous people celebrate their birthday in June, and many historic events took place during the sixth month of the year.

June is named for the Roman goddess Juno. The month of June is a popular month for weddings, perhaps because Juno was the goddess of marriage.

The traditional birthstone for June is the pearl. It is a symbol of loyalty, faithfulness purity, and friendship. This is the only gem that comes from living sea creatures.

Alexandrite is an alternate birthstone for June. This unique gemstone changes color depending on the lighting conditions. It is greenish brown in color when exposed to daylight and fluorescent light, but changes to a purple reddish hue by incandescent or candlelight. It is a symbol of joy and good fortune.

Another alternate birthstone for June is moonstone. It is considered a sacred stone in India. Moonstone varies in color from clear to bluish white or peach. It is a symbol of health and longevity.

The flower for the month of June is the rose. Roses are a symbol of love and appreciation. They are also known as the flower of passion.

Roses come in a wide variety of colors. Each color has a different meaning. Red roses symbolize love, white roses symbolize innocence and purity, and light pink roses are a symbol of admiration or sympathy.

Astrological Signs Gemini and Cancer are the astrological signs for June. Birthdays from June 1st through the 20th fall under the sign of Gemini. June 21st through the 30th birthdays fall under the sign of Cancer.

June Holidays and Observances Father's Day is celebrated mostly on the third Sunday of June to compliment Mother's Day. However, the ancient traces of celebrating Father’s Day can be found. According to many scholars, the importance of Father's Day can be found even in ancient Babylon. Around 4000 years ago, Elmesu first carved a message on a card made of clay for his father wishing him long life and good health. Though there is no record about what happened to them but, the Babylonians started celebrating a day privately reserved for their fathers.

The concept gained momentum on June 19th, 1910 in Spokane, Washington by Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd. She initialized the concept after attending a Mother's Day service. She wanted to honor her father William Smart who was a Civil War veteran and raised his six children after his wife's death. With time the holiday gained popularity.

Flag Day in the United States is June 14th - it's to commemorate the day in 1777 that the Continental Congress adopted the stars and stripes we have on our flag today.

Then, there were only 13 stars and stripes on the flag. It's only a legal holiday in Pennsylvania- everywhere else, it's unofficial.

In the northern hemisphere, the summer solstice occurs and summer begins. This takes place on June 21st, 22nd or 23rd, depending on the year.

Many major events happened during the sixth month of the year. Here are four historical events that took place in June.

Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity on June 15, 1752.

Continental Congress adopted the United States flag known as the Stars and Stripes on June 14, 1777.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recognized by Congress on June 22, 1942.

The Korean War began on June 25, 1950.

Worry Is there a magic cutoff period when offspring become accountable for their own actions?

Is there a wonderful moment when parents can become detached spectators in the lives of their children and shrug, "It's their life," and feel nothing?

When I was in my twenties, I stood in a hospital corridor waiting for doctors to put a few stitches in my daughter's head. I asked, "When do you stop worrying?" The nurse said, "When they get out of the accident stage." My Dad just smiled faintly and said nothing.

When I was in my thirties, I sat on a little chair in a classroom and heard how one of my children talked incessantly, disrupted the class, and was headed for a career making license plates. As if to read my mind, the teacher said, "Don't worry, they all go through this stage and then you can sit back, relax and enjoy them." My Dad just smiled faintly and said nothing.

When I was in my forties, I spent a lifetime waiting for the phone to ring, the cars to come home, the front door to open. A friend said, "They're trying to find themselves.

Don't worry, in a few years, you can stop worrying. They'll be adults." My Dad just smiled faintly and said nothing.

By the time I was 50, I was sick and tired of being vulnerable. I was still worrying over my children, but there was a new wrinkle. There was nothing I could do about it. My Dad just smiled faintly and said nothing. I continued to anguish over their failures, be tormented by their frustrations and absorbed in their disappointments.

My friends said that when my kids got married I could stop worrying and lead my own life.

I wanted to believe that, but I was haunted by my Dad's warm smile and his occasional, "You look pale; are you all right? Call me the minute you get home. Are you depressed about something?"

Can it be that parents are sentenced to a lifetime of worry? Is concern for one another handed down like a torch to blaze the trail of human frailties and the fears of the unknown? Is concern a curse or is it a virtue that elevates us to the highest form of life?

One of my children became quite irritable recently, saying to me, "Where were you? I've been calling for 3 days, and no one answered I was worried. I smiled a warm smile.

The torch has been passed.

Plan now for your Fourth of July Celebration at the clubhouse. Dress in red, white and blue. Bring a beverage and finger food to share. Not a big organized anything, just a gathering of people looking for some fun. The celebration will begin at 4:00 PM.

Thought we would let you know that if you have seen an elephant in the drive way at 91 Reineke, you have not been drinking too much or seeing things.

One night on patrol duty Karen & I helped transport a brown elephant out of Stan Budzyna’ house. His son Raymond has worked on this elephant and it is now ready for its next home at the Naples GOP Convention Center.

This is just too funny - scary how true it is!!!

If my body was a car, this is the time I would be thinking about trading it in for a newer model. I've got bumps and dents and scratches in my finish and my paint job is getting a little dull... But that's not the worst of it. My headlights are out of focus and it's especially hard to see things up close. My traction is not as graceful as it once was. I slip and slide and skid and bump into things even in the best of weather. My whitewalls are stained with varicose veins. It takes me hours to reach my maximum speed. My fuel rate burns inefficiently. But here's the worst of it, almost every time I sneeze, cough or sputter, either my radiator leaks or My Exhaust Backfires!
