Southfork News “FOR THE RESIDENTS, BY THE RESIDENTS” Happy Thanksgiving

More Than a Day As Thanksgiving Day rolls around, It brings up some facts, quite profound. We may think that we’re poor, Feel like bums, insecure, But in truth, our riches astound. We have friends and family we love; We have guidance from heaven above. We have so much more Than they sell in a store, We’re wealthy, when push comes to shove. So add up your blessings, I say; Make Thanksgiving last more than a day. Enjoy what you’ve got; Realize it’s a lot, And you’ll make all your cares go away.

November 2011

Remember to fly your flag on Veterans Day. Honor the many heroes from all the wars who died for our freedom and peace. ____________________________________________ Freedom is not Free There is a price we pay for freedom For it is not truly free But rather paid for by the contributions of veterans To buy our Liberty As their blood drains from their body and runs like a river through the grass I don’t think we all realize the importance veterans play As they voluntarily serve America each and every day We should honor the veterans for they act like a shield Protecting us from danger, keeping America healed. So if you would take a second to commemorate You will instantly see We owe veterans our gratitude For they are the reason we are free.

Welcome to our Community of Southfork! _______________________________________________________________________ Congratulations! September 18th, 2011 Congratulations to the newlyweds, Tom and Shirlynn (Collier) Thompson!

November 6tht marks the end of Daylight Savings Time. Before going to bed on Saturday night, remember to set your clocks back one hour. It is a good time to replace the batteries in your fire detectors and the batteries in your flashlights as well!

DON’T WAIT FOR TOMORROW! Around the corner I have a friend, in this great city that has no end. Yet the days go by and weeks rush on, And before I know it, a year is gone, And I never see my old friends face, For life is a swift and terrible race, He knows I like him just as well, As in the days when I rang his bell, and he rang mine but we were younger then, And now we are busy, tired men. Tired of playing a foolish game, tired of trying to make a name. 'Tomorrow' I say! 'I will call on Jim just to show that I'm thinking of him.' But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes, and distance between us grows and grows. Around the corner, yet miles away,

'Here's a telegram sir,' ' Jim died today.' And that's what we get and deserve in the end. Around the corner, a vanished friend. Remember to always say what you mean. If you love someone, tell them. Because when you decide that it is the right time it might be too late... Seize the day and never have regrets.

And most importantly, stay close to your friends and family, for they have helped make you the person that you are today.

PROBLEMS OR ISSUES?

Do you ever think you are over your head with issues, concerns or complaints? If you have any sort of maintenance problem here at Southfork, remember, that you must go to the office and have a work order filled out, how else will the office know that something must be taken care of. Talking/complaining won’t take care of it!!!! If you have any other problems that should be reported, such as to the local authorities, make sure and call either 911 or look on the 2nd page of the newsletter to call our local police department. Neighbors should be looking out for neighbors if something does not seem quite right. In order to keep control when called, the authorities will document all calls and keep track if there is reoccurring calls and problems.

From the Managers

More on Golf Cart Parking! We have finished the golf cart parking on the west side of the pool which adds 9 more spaces. And, as we reported last month, we are allowing golf cart parking on the grassy area behind the Southfork sign on the west side of the entrance to Southfork (look for the “Additional Golf Cart Parking” sign). We ask that you only use this area when all other golf cart parking spots are full. And again, we ask that you not park golf carts in the spots designated for cars since there are only a limited number of spots available for cars. Get Your Yellow Pages! The Yellowbook has delivered a whole bunch of new yellow pages which are in the library so come and pick up your copy if you need a new one. They come with a nice yellow plastic bag! Thanks For The Help As reported last month, we have finished re-organizing the RV storage area. Many of you were very helpful and cooperative in rearranging your vehicles to accommodate the changes. There are a few more vehicles that we are still unable to locate the owners. If you know who might own the vehicles in slots 41, 34, 28, 26, or 22, we would appreciate letting us know who they are and how we can contact them to arrange to have the vehicles “adjusted” to the new layout. And, as a reminder, we still need information forms, signed disclosures and copies of registration and proof of insurance (if required) for many of the vehicles in the storage area. And We Need Your Help! One of the areas we found lacking as we were reorganizing the storage area was our lack of contact information for many of our residents, especially those of you who leave for the summer. We need your help in updating our records. Please call or come to the office to verify your information and provide us with contact information when you are not here in Southfork. This is particularly important if we have an emergency situation where we would need to contact you. Currently we would be unable to do that for many of our residents. Resident Referral Program We have instituted a resident referral program where you, as a resident, can earn up to $500 if you refer someone who buys a home in Southfork. You may have already seen the flyers that explain what the program is about but if you haven’t, or even if you have, please come by the office and ask about this great opportunity! And that’s all for this month. See you around the park and welcome back to all those that left for the summer. Please come by to say hello when you return so we can get to meet or re-meet you. John & Sandi

Association “ Nominations” On Monday. November 28th, the first association meeting of the fall season will be held at 9am. At this time a slate of nominees, prepared by the nomination committee will be presented and nominations for Board Members will be opened to all members of the association at this meeting. The terms of office are up for all of the officers including President, Vice President, Secretary and the Treasurer and also for 2 directors. Please take time to think this over and decide if you are at all interested in becoming a member of this Board. Did you ever think what would happen if there was no association and what this community would be like? If there are no candidates who come forth resulting in “no board to be elected”, and none of the present officers deciding to stay on, “ this community” without an association would fail and all of us would be hurting because there would be no more coffee hour, no bingo, no potlucks, no pancake breakfasts, no hotdogs, no events of any kind and who would hurt the most? WE ALL WOULD! There would be no buffer between the community and the owner’s and who would all of you call then? Stop and think about this………… It is so easy to sit out there and do nothing, but have you volunteered or made your voice known or to bring forth ideas or suggestions? Did you ever stop and think of why things are done here and who initiates the plans that become a reality? Why should it always be the same people and why don’t we have more and new aggressive people who would like to make a change? This means you have to want to be on the board/committee’s etc. and keep the ball rolling and making this a community that everyone wants to live in and stand up and be proud of. If you are someone wanting to help out, be fair and equal on everything, have an open mind, have a good listening ear , (ideas), then you are a person we are looking for!!!!! I urge you to attend this important meeting so that you too, can take part in nominating your choice of candidates. If you don’t think you can do it and know someone who can, by all means, nominate them . If interested to be on the ballot, please contact: Tony Trubiano @813-992-0844

A board is primarily the administrative arm of an organization and it transacts the business of the organization between regular meetings. Board membership is defined in the by-laws. By-laws should set a quorum of the board, specify how vacancies are filled, de-fine how vacancies are created, set the number of board members, explain their duties and determine .how often the board meets. Elected director shall hold office for a term of two (2) years and shall be so elected that two (2) directors will be elected in the even years and three (3) directors will be elected in the odd years, thus providing and overlap of experience for the Board. There shall be no restriction on the number of terms for which a director may be elected.

Women’s Club

On October 5th a group of ladies met in the clubhouse for their monthly meeting. I also would like to thank all the men and women who came to our meeting to hear the speaker from “Treats for Troops” which was a no show much to our disappointment. We later in the day received a e-mail explaining why they did not make it, and no excuses are good enough for the club. In the future we will have Bob Williams of Spring Hill who sends hundreds of parcels every week to the troops. The refreshments were prepared by Mary Bolin, Brenda Goebel and Shirley Tiratto. Everything was delicious as usual and thanks again for a job well done. All reports were read and approved and other committee chair people gave their reports. Our yearly Bazaar will be held on November 19th. We are in need of more baskets to be made for our raffle and this will be discussed more at this next meeting. We are also in need of items for our white elephant table..These should be slightly used items and if you have any, please bring them to the hall on that day before (Friday, November 18th.) Tanya Hahn donated 5 nice hand bags from Avon to be raffled at the meeting. Tanya has a heart of gold and thank you again for your generosity. We talked about the Chili Supper that will take place on March 18th. We had many ladies who have volunteered to make chili and we still need more. We have such a very generous group of resident’s who reside here in Southfork and that is why we are so very lucky to live here. Thanks again to everyone who brought food for Daystar and they appreciate this so very much! Next month, Willie Stoever and her committee will be hosting the meeting with a Baby Shower---Don’t forget to bring your unwrapped baby items…..we count on you. Willie will also be doing a program on “Pilgrims” and this meeting should be very interesting. Please plan on attending this meeting on November 2nd at 9:30am. We need your support! Thanks to all of you, Marielle, President

Reporters interviewing a 104-year old woman: ‘And what do think is the best thing about being 104?’ the reporter asked..She simply replied, ‘No peer pressure.’

Southfork Men’s Club The Men’s club members gathered at the clubhouse on Oct. 6, 2011 and conducted a meeting. Two new members were welcomed and there was discussion on events and activities in the surrounding area. Several men went to the Tractor Pull at Pioneer Village in Dade City and thoroughly enjoyed the visit. The Men’s Club sponsored a presentation by Detective Peter Emerson, of the Dade City Police Department, on Friday, Oct. 14. The focus was on home security and automobile accidents and instructions on calling 911 for emergencies. Detective Emerson was responsive to all of the questions posed and he was “down to earth” and made all feel comfortable in their queries. The turnout was impressive and pizza was served. Everyone enjoyed the guest speaker. We look forward to our next meeting on Nov. 3, 2011 at the clubhouse. If you have never attended before, please join us, meet and greet your fellow men at Southfork. Hope to see you all then. Don Duarte, Chairperson

COFFEE AND DONUTS

WEDNESDAY NIGHT BINGO

A Southfork team takes care of the Monday morning get togethers @ 8am each week. There is a volunteer sign- up sheet for a host each week on the bulletin board so don’t forget to sign up.

Wow!!!!! Fall season is here!!!! We are so pleased with the turnout in the summer months while the snowbirds were away. Thanks to the Blue jay residents who come also on a regular basis and are enjoying the games. We start selling cards by 5:30pm and sometimes sooner if you are here and stop selling by 6:20pm to count the money and get prepared for the start of the games at 6:30pm. The sheets are a strip of 3 for $4.00 and the bigger strip of 6 for $8.00. The early bird special and the other 2 specials are $.50 a sheet. For every person who attends we also have the Cookie jar which is $.25 per person and if the lucky number is not called, the money rolls over to the next week. There is a 15 minute intermission and we have popcorn which is $.25 per person and all you can eat for the evening. Where else would you get a bargain like this? Come and have some fun and meet new friends!!!! We do ask that there is no talking during the calling of numbers because we have many residents who have a hard time hearing and that is not fair to them. So don’t be offended when we ask for no talking/cell phones, but you sure can talk in between the games!

Come and join your neighbors and friends for that first cup of coffee with a donut. The donuts are $.50 each and coffee is free. You may be even lucky to win at the 50/50. Don’t forget at the Association meetings held on the 4th Monday during the winter months, the coffee and donuts are free, on the Association. STAY INFORMED! For the benefit of the new people who have recently moved in or for the returning Snowbirds, it’s easy to keep updated on the activities and events in Southfork. The Southfork news is distributed to each home by the first of the month, and is filled with articles from all the clubs and more. The event calendar is on the last page which will help you decide which events you want to attend. Why not keep it handy throughout the month for reference. Also check the bulletin board @the club house weekly for any updates of new events which did not get in the newsletter. There is no reason to be uninformed here in Southfork! JUST A NOTE OF THANKS! Thanks to all the volunteers who help in any way with activities, card games, the Women’s and Men’s club etc. There are always too many to name, and we cannot thank each individual separately because we don’t want to leave anyone out. THANK YOU—THANK YOU!!!!

POKER There is poker played on Monday & Friday’s at noon to 3pm. This group plays with wild cards and dealer’s option and this is nickel, dime playing.……….Tuesday and Thursday’s from 4:30pm to 8pm, this also is nickel, dime, quarters and just straight poker and no wild cards allowed. It is fair to inform you we play a lot of different games with both groups. Stop by and check out the 2 different groups to see if you are interested!!!!!

“A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL” To the “Southfork’s Men’s Club” for hosting, Dade City Police Detective, Peter Emerson. His presentation was kept light and informative, and several residential concerns were addressed. We all came away knowing that Florida’s “NO-Fault” drivers law is a quagmire for insured parties. Take pictures, whenever possible! Our “Homeowners Association” provided the Coffee service and the “Men’s Club” purchased the Fourteen (14) pizzas. Thanks to all, Out & About

RECIPE OF THE MONTH Bang Bang Shrimp

This is a recipe from the “Bonefish Grille” Ingredients: 1 lb shelled shrimp Cornstarch for coating Directions: Coat the shrimp with the cornstarch and fry in a pan with at least an inch of oil. It only takes a few minutes and when golden take the shrimp out (don’t over cook) and place a plate with paper towels to absorb the oil. Dip: ½ cup mayonnaise ¼ cup Thai mild chili sauce Mix the two ingredients together until well blended. If you like a little spicier and hot add just a few drops of hot sauce. This is one delicious appetizer and one for those who love shrimp.

FRESH CORN RISOTTO 4 big ears fresh corn, 1 quart (32 0z.) either vegetable broth or water 1 cup arborio (risotto) rice, 1 cup diced onions, 2 tbsp. butter 1/2 tbsp. dried basil, 2 tbsp. Parmesan cheese Husk corn, stand on end and slice off corn kernels. Cut fairly close to cob. Place corn and all other ingredients in large microwaveable bowl, (except cheese). Cover and microwave on HIGH for 10 minutes. Stir once and then microwave 10-15 more minutes until vegetables are tender and rice is softened. Stir in Parmesan cheese; rice will thicken as it stands. This serves 8+. If you use water(instead of broth), you'll need to add a little salt and pepper, as it will be bland. Submitted by, Ginger Shanbeck

UPCOMING BLOOD DRIVE AT SOUTHFORK The Florida Blood Net Bloodmobile will once again return to Southfork on Monday, November 14 between the hours or 9 & 12. At a recent bloodmobile visit, Susan Ramos the Community Relations Representative from Blood Net gave a short talk explaining that the rules for making blood donations have been revised allowing people with certain medical restrictions or that take certain medications who were formerly not able to donate are now eligible to give blood. The process once you board the bus is filling our a short medical questionaire, then the technicians take your blood pressure and a small sample to make sure that your you blood contains a certain quantity of iron. The one major restriction is that a donor must weight at least 110 pounds. Once you have been approved the actual donation only takes about 20 minutes. Usually a donor walks away with at least tt-shirt or hat and some other either free or discounted offers from local merchants. The Southfork Homeowners Association is in the planning stages of issuing a challenge to other similar parks to give at least as much as more as our Southfork Donors.

PLEASE DONATE A P PINT INT ON NOVEMBER 14TH. IT DOESN'T HURT! YOUR GET A FREE HEALTH SCREEN CHECK AND YOU MAY JUST SAVE ANOTHER PERSONS LIFE! WOULDN'T THAT MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD? Bobby Hahn & Sherry Morvatz shown donating at the August Blood Drive at Southfork

SOUTHFORK RECYCLES This article is a rewritten version of an article that was published in the Southfork News back in March 2011. A comment at the October, 2011 Association Board Meeting prompted me to once again reiterate the importance of recycling. Recycling keeps certain types of material out of landfills. Here at Southfork a truck comes thru the park every other Saturday to pick up aluminum can, steel cans, glass bottles, newspapers and plastics. This service is provided by Pasco County and the materials are taken to a center where metal items are sorted and then taken to smelters to be melted down and then made into new metals. Old newspapers are used to make new newsprint and plastics are melted down to be remade into many new products. If you put these items into your regular trash containers they may end up in landfill areas where it takes mother nature thousands of years to break them down. Landfills are a constant problem leaching toxic material into the earth and into our water supplies. Recycling is the answer to many of those problems. To take this process one step further there are containers located in Southfork's RV storage to place aluminum beer and soda cans. A couple of SF men bag the cans and take them to a local recycler which generates funds ($$$) which is put into the association treasury which is then “recycled for entertainment here at Southfork. There is also a dumpster in the same area for residents to place their old newspapers. A company picks up that dumpster, recycles the newspapers and then sends the association a check which is also used to provide activities here in the park. The comment made at the recent meeting was that several residents still place recyclable materials out for the trash man to pick up on Saturdays. The CHANGE that the Association Board would like to make is: If you cannot take your aluminum cans or newspapers down to the containers in the RV storage area please place them in a bag and put them at the end of your driveway on Monday mornings and a group of men will take them down to the proper receptacles to be recycled. This way your recyclable items will not lend up in the landfill and Southfork residents can all benefit from the monies generated by recycling them in a proper manner. PLEASE RECYCLE! It helps the environment. It helps the Association! It helps you! Submitted by: Jim Morvatz
