Southfork News “FOR THE RESIDENTS, BY THE RESIDENTS” Happy Halloween
October 2011
Welcome back to all the snowbirds. We missed all of you and we hope you are ready to begin your return and enjoy the beautiful Florida weather. Being October already, most northern residents are already back here in Southfork. You will see some changes, new neighbors, old neighbors gone, more houses for sale. The summer was extremely hot and humid but the pool was put to good use and was packed daily. Now the season is ready to start with all of you back and again, welcome back!
Hurricane Season Hurricane season is upon us and so far we here in Dade City have not encountered any bad weather, “Irene missed us”. Do not let this put you in the (it won’t hit us mood) because the season lasts until November. Always be on alert and listen to the weather forecasts. Be ready for any forecast of inclement weather. Stay safe!!!! ________________________________________________

New Residents We have none for this month!!!!! Welcome to our Community of Southfork!
Don't Understand Stanley was in his usual place in the morning, sitting at the table, reading the paper after breakfast. He came across an article about a beautiful actress that was about to marry a football player, who was known primarily for his lack of I.Q. and common knowledge. He turned to his wife with a look of question on his face. "I'll never understand why the biggest jerks get the most attractive wives." Stanley's wife replied, "Why thank you, dear!" (and then the fight began.)
From the Managers More on the RV/Vehicle Storage Area We have finished re-organizing the storage area and have placed markers on all corners of each storage location. The row against the hedge (south edge) has been renumbered and reconfigured. The majority of these slots in this row are now 12’ x 25’ with shorter ones toward the back. If you had been assigned one of those spots, please come by or call to get your new location and slot number. The middle and back (north edge) rows have been re-organized to be straight pull-ins or parallel with the road. The middle row slots are 15’ x 35’ and the back row slots are 15’ x 45’. The slot numbers have not changed, but we did eliminate 2 slots on the end of the back row (slots 17& 18). We have added some slots to the row behind the storage shed (west edge). These slots are 10’ x 18’. We have also trimmed the trees beside the storage shed to allow bigger vehicles to come around behind the shed which we hope will help with maneuverability and egress. If you are unsure of which slot you have, please come by the office or call us to confirm your slot location. We will be contacting everyone who has had a lot in the past or has requested one to confirm which location they should be in. We also ask everyone to help us reshuffle units to fit into the new layout. Remember, you should be using only the spot you have been assigned. To help with organizing the new layout, we will be asking everyone to fill out a storage information sheet, which we have attached to this newsletter. We also need an updated signed storage agreement, which you can get at the office, and updated copies of your vehicle registration and proof of insurance for all vehicles stored in the storage area. Where’s the Dumpster? We moved our dumpster to beside the well area on Wilds road. Remember the dumpster is really only to be used for park maintenance. If you want to use the dumpster, you need to check with either the managers or Andrew to make sure there will be room available. Additional Golf Cart Parking! Many of you have asked for more golf cart parking. We will be adding golf cart parking to the west side of the pool; similar to what is currently on the east side of the pool. We are also allowing golf cart parking on the grassy area behind the Southfork sign on the west side of the entrance to Southfork (look for the “Additional Golf Cart Parking” sign). We ask that you only use this area when all other golf cart parking spots are full. We also ask that you not park golf carts in the spots designated for cars since there are only a limited number of spots available for cars. Have Brown Stains on the Side of Your House? We have a solution to clean those brown stains on the side of your house caused by the fertilizer used by some of the lawn maintenance companies. It’s called “The Works”. It’s actually a toilet bowl cleaner but does a wonderful job on getting rid of those brown stains. It is available at “Big Lots” for $1.00. There are 2 bottles; you want to get the blue bottle, not the gel. See you around the park! John & Sandi

ASSOCIATION NEEDS HELP!!!!!
The Board is enlisting all of you to help on any of the activities we have planned or would like to plan for this next season. We are proud to be a resident here in Southfork and really boast on the many events that are held here monthly/weekly throughout the year. I will list below the some of the many committees and activities that we need help on or need to have chair people taking care of them. Before the listing I must tell you that there will be no “Hotdogs by the Pool” or “Pancakes on the first Saturday of each month” because we have no chair people and no one has come forward to help. If you still want these activities we need for someone to come forward so we can schedule these events. November = We need at least 2 people to work at the pavilion for coffee and donuts to be sold during the time span of 8am to 11:30am for the carport sale which is on Nov 5th. Thanksgiving dinner will be held on Thursday November 24th and a chairperson is needed. December = Saturday December 17th in lieu of a Golf Cart parade, a Christmas party will be held instead with Christmas Carols, Goodies and exchange of gifts (no names to be drawn) more on this later. Help is needed for this. Sunday December 25th will be the Christmas dinner and we need a lot of help for this. New Year’s Eve help is really needed, especially the set up and clean up. So you can see what and why we are begging all of you to reconsider. So instead of sitting back and saying, “Geez there is nothing to do,” and or complaining because the same people are always doing everything, you now have your chance to come forward and state you will help. We know a lot of people are not physically capable of doing things but we do have little jobs that you can do and that could be manning the tables at the entrance etc. You just have to let us know what you can or can’t do and the board will handle the rest. Please reconsider your thinking and become a part of a team play and this is such a good way to interact with your fellow neighbors and friends. PLEASE HELP US TO HELP YOU!!!!
from the Association President Dear Friends and Neighbors, You will soon receive your official notification of the 2012 rent increase. We are disappointed because we worked very hard on our presentation from all of the residents and even made a second appeal to the owners of Southfork, not to increase our rent for next year………we are sorry to say that the 2012 increase will be $13.00 more a month, which they tell us is a lot less than they had planned. That is the “bad news”…………….the “good news” is we have John and Sandi as our managers. While we do not like to be reminded of yard work and power washing that needs to be done…….that is the job they were hired to do! Daily, you can see the results of their work. The results of all of us working together, to help keep Southfork a home to be proud of. Remember those “work order request forms”, if you need their help. The other good news is now the Association Board can focus on “things to do”, such as activities. On another page you will find the list of things that we have thought of for the rest of the year, but we need your input, for the things you would like to do!!!!!! AND WE NEED YOUR HELP! Please take a look at our list, give us your ideas and volunteer to help. Welcome back to our Snowbirds! We sure have missed you. Dot Cady, President _____________________________________________________________________________________ Out of the Mouths of Children!
Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, 'Why is the bride dressed in white?'' The mother replied, 'Because white is the color of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life.' The child thought about this for a moment then said, 'So why is the groom wearing black?'
EIGHTY TODAY STORY TAKEN FROM THE SENIOR CONNECTION PAPER THOUGHT THIS MIGHT CHEER UP SOME WHO NEAR THIS AGE!
Lord. I’m 80; there’s much I haven’t done. I hope you’ll let me live until I’m 81. But, if I haven’t finished all I want to do, would you let me stay—until I’m 82? So many places I want to go, so much to see—do you think you could manage to make it 83? Many things, so much let in store. I’d like very much to live to 84. And if by then I’m still alive, then I’d like to stay to 85. The world is changing very fast—I’d really like to stick, and see what happens to the world when I’m 86. I know it’s a lot to ask—and it will be nice in heaven, but I’d really like to stay here until I’m 87. I know by then I won’t be fast, and sometimes I’ll be late, but it would be oh-so-pleasant to be around at 88. I know I’ll have had a wonderful time, so, I’m sure I’ll be willing to leave—at 89! Thank you for hearing my plea!!!!!! _____________________________________________________________________________________

From The Editor Community news is important to us and if we don’t know it, we can’t report it. Illnesses and unfortunately, deaths should be known to all that wish to share with their neighbors. But, if you have any other newsy item you wish to share, (nothing negative) please submit to Phyllis Grossi in writing or e-mail me at pkaygrossi@yahoo.com with the subject “Southfork.” Items can also be dropped off at the clubhouse and placed in the Association suggestion box or dropped off at my home at 11150 Mesquite Dr.
THE SEASON’S STARTING AGAIN………………………………………………….. Snowbirds are flocking back to their southern home. Year long residents of Southfork are looking forward to the first cool front. Summer visitors, including grandchildren off from school, have returned to their Northern homes, with the next school year hanging over their heads. Signs of community are starting up, with more people at bingo, shuffleboard, card games and the renewed activities of our community. Welcome back to everyone, welcome to all new residents here in Southfork. about to begin.
Southfork’s winter season is
Among us who “summered over,” we’re tired of heat, humidity and thunderstorms. The park has a different feel to it in summer besides the oppressive heat, (it is tooooo quiet.) Many friends aren’t around----it’s like winter in our northern climates. We stay in our air-conditioned homes, take our air-conditioned cars to air-conditioned stores, restaurants and churches. We’re as much prisoners in the summer as we ever were up North in the winter. But-----and it’s important-----winter’s on its way here in sunny Florida. Winter is the time when retired Floridians keep check on the weather up North. Ice storms are recorded and snow depths are accepted with shaken heads and the sub-freezing temperatures are remembered with vague memories. We do let the ones back home know of our beautiful sunny climate….and brag we do!!!! Winter time is good in Florida…………Winter time in Florida means we can continue moving and doing and appreciating this wonderful state! To all of us in Southfork, it’s now time to enjoy!!!!!
Women’s Club On September 7th, 23 members got together for their first meeting of the Fall. All the reports were read and approved. We received a thank you note from Lacoochee Elementary school for all the school supplies donated by our generous members and residents and some of the Blue jay residents. Tanya Hahn who loves our meetings could not be with us so she donated, 6 pretty purses to be raffled off. Thanks so much Tanya for your generosity. We had a guest speaker, Diana Coffield, from “Purses With a Purpose”, who gave a nice presentation on children who have cancer. She brought some of the purses/backpacks that were made to give out to those children. She raffled a beautiful bag and Linda Dickinson won it. The presentation was heartbreaking and we donated $100.00 for the cause. We talked about our fall Bazaar that will be held on November 19th. At our next meeting we will circulate a list of baskets (for the raffle) needed and please think about making one. Our Chili supper, our second fundraiser, will be held on March 18th. At our October meeting on October 5th, we will have a speaker from “Treats for Troops.” We are inviting each of you and that means everyone in this community (men and women) to come to the Women’s Club @9:30am to hear our speaker talking about the troops. Let’s not forget our soldiers who are defending our country. Refreshments will be served. The social part of the meeting will be hosted by Mary Bolin, Brenda Goebel and Shirley Tiratto. Hope to see all of you there, Marielle, President
Bid Euchre Bid Euchre used to be held on Friday evenings. Well, there are a few who would like to see it get started again. If there are any interested residents who would like to play this game, please see Linda Dickinson who will take your name and start a list. No set date has been made and this usually is played in the Fall when everyone is back. So get with your friends who would like to play, (of course for those who do not know how to play, everyone would help you get started) and let the fun begin. Hope to see many join this group on Friday evenings!!!!
Southfork Men’s Club
The Men's club met on September 1, 2011 at the clubhouse and conducted a meeting. Places to "go" and things to "do" were discussed and we hope for input at our October meeting. If you are reading this article, we would like you to join us next month. We want new members! Come and join our group of men; bring your ideas and your good spirits and become a part of the Southfork Men's Club. Hope to see you all on Thursday, October 6, 2011 @ 9am at the clubhouse. Don Duarte, Chairperson
WORK ORDERS Just a reminder that if there is anything that the office should be aware of that needs to be fixed, or a problem, a “Work Order” must be filled out. Remember, talking about it won’t get it fixed! _____________________________________________________________________________________
GRANDMA'S AGE
LITTLE JOHNNY ASKED HIS GRANDMA HOW OLD SHE WAS. GRANDMA ANSWERED, "39 AND HOLDING." JOHNNY THOUGHT FOR A MOMENT, AND THEN SAID, "AND HOW OLD WOULD YOU BE IF YOU LET GO?"
ATTENTION!!!!!!
Someone was so generous and left a few soda bottles on the counter at the clubhouse on Friday evening, August 26th with no note (to thank them) as to who left them and what we’re suppose to do with them. If anyone has a party or bought to many items and brings them to the clubhouse,( as a donation), please leave a note or call one of the board members and let them know about the donations so we can make arrangements for the next get together to use the items. Thanks again!!!!
POOL AREA We are calling for any information on anyone observing a party in the Pool Area after 9pm on weekend of September 3rd Normally it does not matter who swims in the pool after dark but on this occasion, whomever it was, left the empty bottles behind with a beer cap found in the pool. Other beer caps have been found on other days. Now we all know the rules about drinking around the pool area and hopefully it was not a visitor or a resident. If it was outsiders who decided to cool off in our pool……..we sure would like to know about it and please let John and Sandi know of this in the office.

BLOOD DRIVE AT SOUTHFORK
Sherry & Jim Morvatz made giving blood a family affair during the recent blood drive here at Southfork. Sherry has donated 5 pints and Jim's recent donation gave him a lifetime total of 86 pints.
On September 12 the Bloodnet USA bloodmobile visited Southfork for anyone interested in donating a pint of blood. Due to a advertising glitch, the news did not get out to everyone in the park, ho however wever five persons stepped up on short notice to donate. More information will be made available sooner for upcoming drives here at SF. Susan Ramos, the community relations representative from the bloodmobile gave a short talk during the Monday morn morning ing coffee hour and invited those present to make a donation. Susan stated during her presentation that the rules concerning different medications have recently been modified and now more people who were previously exempt can now donate blood. She also told how the blood is used and how the different parts of a donation can be used for many different life saving purposes. Also any blood donated at Southfork makes anyone that is a resident of Southfork eligible for blood transfusions at little or no cost if and when the need should arise. A color brochure has been placed in the clubhouse foyer explaining all about blood donations.
Two more bloodmobiles have been scheduled for Southfork. The first will be on November 14th from 9AM until 12 Noon. Th Thee next one will be held in conjunction with the second annual Southfork Health Fair on January 27, 2012. Please make plans to attend and “GIVE THE GIFT OF LIFE!
Burger and fries (without a roll) casserole INGREDIENTS 1 ½ lb lean (at least 80%) ground beef 1 large onion, chopped (about 1 cup) 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes, undrained 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese (4 oz) 2 cups frozen crispy French-fried potatoes or Potato Nuggets
DIRECTIONS •
Heat oven to 450°F. In 12-inch nonstick skillet, cook beef and onion over medium-high heat about 8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until beef is thoroughly cooked; drain well. Sprinkle flour over beef mixture. Cook 1 minute, stirring constantly. Stir in tomatoes; heat to boiling. Remove from heat.
•
In ungreased 1 1/2-quart casserole, spread beef mixture. Sprinkle with cheese. Arrange frozen potatoes evenly in single layer on top.
•
Bake uncovered about 20 minutes or until potatoes are golden brown. Let stand 5 minutes before serving.
Be sure to drain the cooked ground beef really well. Any extra juices will make the pot pie too watery. When it’s too cold outside to grill those burgers, comfort food calls, and this casserole will surely hit the spot! Serve this casserole with a salad and have a perfect meal!
Hella’s Bakery and Restaurant 785 Dodecanese Boulevard Tarpon Springs, Fl 34689 727-943-2400 Located in the center of the World Famous Sponge Docks and Fishing village and featuring award winning Greek Cuisine and authentic Greek pastries to top off your dining pleasure. The family-owned restaurant offers many appetizers and entrees created from home-grown recipes. Appetizers include Saganaki (flaming imported cheese) and Skordalia (potato-garlic bread) while one of the best soups around is the traditional Avgolemono (egg and lemon). But many come for the Original Traditional Greek salad which can be a meal in itself for one, two or four. It’s a rich mass of Lettuce, Feta Cheese, Greek Olives, Onions, Cucumbers,Tomatoes, Greek peppers and topped with the traditional scoop of Homemade Potato salad and they also have the Horiatiki salad. Tzatziki Sauce with 2 pitas (sour Cream, Cucumber and garlic sauce), Assorted Spreads such as: Tzatziki, Feta Spread & Hummus served with Pita Bread, Pickled Octopus etc. For lunch and dinner, in addition to the standard Gyros, Hamburgs and Sandwiches, it offers Spanakopita (spinach pie), Dolmades (Stuffed grape vine leaves) and many combination platters. They offer Mousaka (Casserole of beef, eggplant, potatoes, blended and baked with a cheese sauce) and another which is Pastitsio (Casserole of Ziti, ground beef, eggplant, potatoes, bleneded and baked with a cheese sauce). Seafood selections range from Shrimp a la Hellas (pan fried shrimp in butter and garlic) to leg of spring lamb or lamb chops. Assorted Cold Plate (Octopus, Shrimp, Skordalia, Taramosalata, Tzatziki, Olives, Peppers and Cheese. A lot of this sounds Greek (just a pun) but words cannot express how fantastic everything in here is. Service is great with such a varied menu and the waiters are eager to explain what everything is and they have many daily specials. The list is too great and big to even try and list here and all I have to say is you have got to try it at least once if you have never eaten there before. So you say you have a sweet tooth…..well you’ve come to the right place. Hells Bakery in the next room/building, can’t be beat for rich, buttery, delicious treats. These pastries are so good you’ll want to gobble them right up on the spot and take some home for later!
LUAU in lieu of HALLOWEEN In typical Southfork fashion let's have a LUAU instead of a Halloween party! Come dressed in your most colorful Hawaiian shirt (and grass skirt) if you have one. The date will be October 30th. Watch for the Tiki Torches and listen for the Hawaiian music at poolside starting at 5:30. There will be Hawaiian Luau Style Food including: Pork Medallions on skewers w/pineapple, tomato, onion & peppers, served on a bed of rice topped with a sweet & sour sauce. This tempting treat will be served with a sweet potato and garnished with a sprig of grapes. This scrumptious feast will be accompanied with a tropical flavored drink.
Entertainment will follow the meal featuring Polynesian music, games and prizes. Only $3 for association members and $5 non-members. Sign-up in the clubhouse, this party promises to be a Hawaiian Style Blast!!
