Southfork News “FOR THE RESIDENTS, BY THE RESIDENTS” Happy Labor Day
September 2011
It feels like Fall ……….Somewhere Fall will be here soon, although here in Florida it’s hard to tell. You’re going to have to wait until about the third week of October before the daily high temperatures drop to the low 80s. The folks at the Florida climate center say Fall happens when the daily low temperatures drop below 60 degrees and stay there. In the Tampa Bay area that doesn’t usually Happen until you’re eyeing turkey for Thanksgiving.
Time to Celebrate! To honor workers far and near Our nation passed a bill To grant all men a day of rest A Sabbath—if you will!
You know its fall in Florida when-----•
Much praise is due our labor force For each achievement made Who’ve furthered the economy Our country’s growth and trade.
• •
It’s also a three day weekend’n The last chance to bask in the warm sunshine, Enjoy the poolside and just have a great time With friends and family with bbqs, parades and picnics. Chill out this Labor Day with friends, family, Associates and loved ones and wish’em a Fun-tas-tic Labor Day weekend!

You put away your light green bathing suit in favor of your brown one. You can roll down the windows in your car and not run the risk of melting You can plant things without them withering immediately The stores put out the winter holiday decorations. Everywhere you turn there is some sort of festival celebrating art, food, wine, crafts, history, cars, gourds etc. Although we don’t get the rainbow of falling leaves that other states do, we do see a lot of acorns and random other seedlings. Hey, that’s less raking for us.

SERVICE’S FOR RESIDENT’S
It was brought to my attention that many people here in Southfork need the services from time to time of either a company who does pressure washing, roofing, plumbing, electrical work, installation of windows etc. and all of these vendors must be licensed. There are many newer residents who are not familiar with the area and at times needs a name of a company to do these various jobs. So I thought maybe to all of you who have used some of these various services and have used reputable company’s and may want to share this with everyone, to please send to me a list with a company name, phone# etc and what this company does and I will print up a list and place on the bulletin board in the library in the clubhouse. What a way to help a newer resident when they need help! You can place this list in the suggestion box in the clubhouse foyer to my attention. If you want this listed in the October issue as a one time listing, please have all info to me by September 15. Thanks everyone, Phyllis Grossi SOLICITORS
No solicitors are allowed in this community whether it be selling of newspaper (Tampa Tribune) or otherwise. Recently we have had door to door people trying to solicit business for paving of driveways. He tells you he can do it for a cheaper price before the snowbirds get back. He will ask for half the money up front to pay for his supplies and tells you what a wonderful warranty the paint has. 1. He doesn’t do what he said he will do and you might not see him for several days. 2. Then ask to get paid before the job is finished. 3. The paint job that he has done on a few homes is inferior and the paint starts to peel before 30 days is past. So please, stop and question and do research before hiring anyone and ask to see their license to do the work. Do not take any excuses as to why they can not show you this info.
Lot Rent Due Date Reminder We would like to remind our residents that your lot rent is due by the 1st of the month. We do allow a 10 day “grace” period before we charge a late fee but we need to have your “check-in-hand” by the 10th. For you northern folks, remember that it may take 5-6 days for the mail to reach us. We really don’t like to assess a late fee so please make sure to mail or deliver your check in time to avoid the late charge. Need Help with Pressure Washing? We have worked out an arrangement with a pressure washing company where they will pressure wash your house, carport, driveway, awnings and screen porches for a flat rate of $55 per house. But to get that rate, we need to have at least 5 residents sign up to get their houses pressure washed. If you wish to take advantage of this opportunity, please contact John or Sandi in the office, especially if you don’t want to get a letter from us about “green stuff” (i.e., mold) growing on the side of your house. The only other stipulation is that we collect your check upfront to ensure we can provide the 5 houses required to get the reduced rate. Speaking of Help, We have Some! We have many projects that we want to get accomplished and just don’t seem to have time to get to them all so we decided we needed some help. We have hired Steve Coker to help us around Southfork. Some of you know Steve and are aware of his skills and experience. Please help us welcome Steve if you happen to see him around the community. RV/Vehicle Storage Area Speaking of projects, we have been reviewing both the records and the layout of the RV/vehicle storage area and have found that this area needs some serious attention. First, the records we have as to who has what and where in the storage area are not up-to-date. Over the next few weeks, we will be calling anyone who we have listed as having a spot assigned to them to verify that they still need a spot and to update our records as to what they have stored in that area. We have also found that there are vehicles (meaning trailers, boats, trucks, and cars as well as campers) that are stored in that area for which we have no records and, therefore, have no idea who they belong to. So if you have a vehicle stored in our storage area, please check with us to make sure we have your information. Now the information we will need is an information sheet (previously known as a storage application), proof of registration, proof of insurance (if applicable), and a signed disclaimer. We will be collecting that information as we assign or re-assign locations in the storage area. As part of this effort, we are looking at re-laying out the area and making some improvements to the entry road and to providing more room for maneuvering, especially for larger vehicles. As we get the layout finalized, we will be placing markers in the storage area to help mark the new spots more clearly and we will actually be adding several new locations to provide more storage space, especially for smaller vehicles. If you are interested in knowing more about what’s happening in the storage area, especially if you have a spot or think you might want a spot, stop by the office and we’ll be glad to share the plans with you. More About Trees Many of you are aware of the large branch that fell across Mustang Drive recently. This incident prompted us to call in our local forestry representative to continue discussions about our trees and what we can do to help prevent further instances of branches falling. Again, the visit and ensuing discussion was very helpful. The forestry representative provided us with information on how to minimize the risk of further branches or trees coming down unexpectedly. One of the specific areas the representative stressed was the regular pruning of the trees to reduce the weight of the major limbs and the effective “cross-section” to the wind. To help with this effort, we have worked with a tree trimming service to do the required pruning at a reduced rate, again provided we get a certain number of residents who want their trees trimmed. The cost will be somewhere around $275 - $325, depending on how much “trimming” is required, less if the tree only needs some “cosmetic” pruning So if you want to take advantage of this reduced rate, please contact John or Sandi in the office and we will make the necessary arrangements. See you around the park!

Tables and Chairs
To borrow any table or chairs from the clubhouse, you must reserve and fill out a reservation form with the Association President first. The same thing goes for the Pavillion and the Pool area. Call the President, Dot Cady for that form and please give ample notice. This is a must, because there are many activities held daily and many different type tables are used depending on the activity. If any questions on this procedure, please contact Dot Cady @567-6456.
from the Association President Jim Morvatz, Phyllis Grossi, Tony Trubiano, Jim Peltier and myself, met 5 weeks in a row, spending over 200 hours plus, preparing a presentation for a meeting with Scott Heiler and Paul Johnson, which was held on Wednesday, August 17th to discuss the 2012 rent increase. Thank you to all the year round residents who filled out your financial survey which became a very important part of our presentation. Unfortunately, we will have to wait to hear if we were successful. My personal thanks to to Jim M., Phyllis, Tony and Jim P. for all of their combined efforts and the time they each spent to make our meeting both professional and concise. Dot Cady, President
CHOICES
Choices group are meeting at Dot Cady’s, September 23rd @ 4pm. See info on the bulletin board. Choices also meet every Thursday for lunch and that is also listed on the bulletin board. Thoughtful Husband!
I asked my wife, "Where do you want to go for our anniversary?" It warmed my heart to see her face melt in sweet appreciation. "Somewhere I haven't been in a long time!" she said. So I suggested, "How about the kitchen?" And that's when the fight started....
Women’s Club
The Ladies of the Women’s Club went to I-HOP on August 3rd for their monthly get together for a great meal and everyone had a great time. I want to thank all the Southfork and Blue jay residents who were very generous in giving school supplies for the less fortunate students. These supplies were taken to Lacoochee School and a big thanks to Mary Bolin and Shirley Rouer who do the delivering and coordinating. The summer is almost over and it went by so fast……..we had 3 of our meetings out for a meal in June, July and August. We had lots of fun and laughter. On September 7th, we are back to normal again and we have our meeting in the clubhouse at 9:30am. We will have a speaker, Diane Coffield and the topic will be cancer in children. She has a project that she will share with us and it should be very interesting. I look forward to seeing you there, Marielle, President PS -------- On August 31st at 11:00am, the Charity Committee will have a meeting and wish that all members do attend.
Monday Morning Coffee Hour
Each week on Monday mornings from 8am to 9am there is always coffee brewing which is free and we do have donuts for those who are a little hungry and they are $.50 each. What a good way to meet some of your neighbors and start your week.
The men are usually talking about the latest sport event on TV and the women are always talking about the latest happenings in the community. No agenda or speakers, just a chance for our community to come together. Bring your smile and wit and we’ll furnish your coffee. We would love to get to know all of our new neighbors and the others who have been in hibernation lately. Come join us!!!!
Southfork Men’s Club
The Men’s Club met on August 4th at the Golden Corral for lunch and conducted an informal meeting. We had a very good turnout for the summer, as hot as it was. However, a few men ate a little too much but it was sooooo good! Our next meeting on September 1st will be at 9:00am at the Clubhouse. Hope to see you all then, Don Duarte, Chairperson

SOUTHFORK MEN'S CLUB TOURS YEUNGLING BREWERY On July 22, several members of the Southfork Men's Club traveled to Tampa to tour the Yeungling Brewery. The tour started by walking thru the building to a large room containing the two brewing kettles. The kettles normally operate at a temperature of 212 degrees. The next stop on the tour was thru their laboratory where the different beers are formulated, and samples are tested for smell, alcohol content and of course taste tested by a panel of experts. After leaving that part of the plant we passed thru the area where all of the raw materials are received, stored and processed. The guide explained that the company maintains three deep wells on the plant site to accommodate their need for water in the brewing process (they do not purchase water from the Tampa water supply). The next portion of the tour included the storage facility where the product is kept in many large stainless steel vats at a temperature of 32 degrees. The guide stated that the vats contained 1160 kegs of beer and that would amount to 420,000 gallons of beer. The guide made an interesting statement that - if a beer drinker was to consume a six-pack per day it would take that person 51 years to consume the beer in those storage tanks. The next stop on the tour showed us through the bottling and canning area of the plant which was just a blur of cans and bottles flying past on conveyors in order to be filled and capped. The tour guide also gave some interesting facts about the history of the Yeungling Brewery. Originally known as the Eagle Brewing Company the company was started in 1829 and is still privately held and managed by the sixth generation of the original family. Yeungling was officially recognized in 1976, during the US Bicentennial, as the oldest brewing company in the US. The original plant is still located in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. There is now a second facility in Pottstown and the plant in Tampa was originally owned by another brewer and was acquired by and converted to Yeungling in 1998. The Tampa plant employs sixty people, runs on two 12 hour shifts and currently brews a family of six different beers The tour concluded by a stop in the product sampling bar where each guest was given the opportunity to sample two eight ounce cups of different products. Of course we were then given the chance to visit their souvenir shop. After enjoying the beer and ale “samples the group traveled across Tampa to visit Mr. Dunderbak's European Beer Bar and Restaurant where we sat down to a delicious meal of German Cuisine and of course - another beer.
Disposing OF American Flag Proper etiquette dictates that American flags should be displayed properly and handled with respect. But how do you dispose of a flag that has reached the end of its lifespan? When a flag has gotten dirty, torn or faded, it should no longer be displayed. Instead, it should be replaced and the retired flag should be disposed of in a proper manner or turned over to a group that will handle the disposal process correctly. 1. Self-disposal o
If you choose to dispose of your own retired flag, the Flag Code says that you must destroy it by a dignified method. Burning is cited as the preferred method, although it is not required. According to the Congressional Research Service, the procedure for burning is not spelled out in the code, but it should be done in a tasteful and respectful way.
Precautions •
Retired flags should always be destroyed rather than being used for any other purpose. The American flag should never be allowed to touch the ground or be used to carry or cover other items. If you must store it prior to destroying it, it should be kept in a place where it cannot get more soiled than it already is. Never ever, dispose in the “trash.”
Disposal of Flag The US Flag Code states "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning". As long as it is a respectful disposal it is acceptable. But, for your best options, allow an organization that does this on a regular basis to do it for you. Where you are located you should have no trouble locating any of the groups I am about to mention. Recipe of the Month This recipe was brought to our Women’s Club meeting back in 2001 and from what I understand it was delicious so I thought maybe this would be a good time to submit it. This was a recipe from former resident Charlotte Mihm’s recipe files. I did not know her but understand this was something everyone looked forward to. EASY PECAN ROLLS •
Butter a 9 x 13 inch pan
•
Spread whole or chopped pecans on the bottom of pan.
•
Arrange 24 frozen, unbaked rolls on top of the pecans (these can be found in your grocer’s freezer section.)
•
Sprinkle with a package of regular Butterscotch pudding mix (not instant).
•
Melt a stick of margarine with 1 cup of brown sugar and trickle over the rolls.
•
Cover and let set overnight or at least 6 hours.
•
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
•
Bake about 20-30 minutes
•
Let stand several minutes after baking and then turn pan over to remove the rolls. Serve warm for the best taste, but cool tastes mighty good also.
LABOR DAY
Labor Day officially ends the summer month, as those who work enjoy one final fling.
Blessed are those who bear the daily burden, of whom few avants speak or minstrels sing,
Returning to the shallows of September, Days of ease give way to hours certain, A long routine that wends its way towards winter, Yearning for the promises of Spring.

They have some Greek food such as: Chicken Souvlaki Platter (Marinated chicken skewer grilled to perfection, served with Greek Salad, rice, pita bread and homemade Tzaziki sauce for $7.49.) They have all sort of breakfast specials so many to try and mention but I will name a few. About Grandparents In the middle of September (September 11th) comes a day most folks don’t even think much about: GRANDPARENTS’ DAY This is probably a good time to celebrate the Grandparents. The days grow shorter (and so do a lot of us as we age!), the leaves start to turn color (as we lose a bit of ours), and there is still plenty of nice weather to enjoy…and most of us have finally learned what that word means. GRANDPARENTS ARE NOT AT ALL LIKE PARENTS: we become entirely different people when those tiny new ones come along! Sometimes we are obnoxious about showing you our cute pictures, but you must understand that as we look at that first grandbaby we see the most beautiful child that has ever been born. And, miracle of miracles, as the next one comes along (and the next, and the next) they get not only cuter, but smarter. And we just have to tell you all about these miracle children, because news like this is MUCH too important to keep to one’s self! NOTE: ALONG WITH THE GOOD STUFF COME A FEW “NOT SO GOODS.” The years get shorter and shorter. Christmas shopping comes around every three months now. I’ve been thinking a lot about that lately, because it seems to take forever to do anything these days. The day is gone and only half the chores get done. I just can’t wait to see how things are in another 15 or 20 years (if we live that long)! It’ll be Christmas shopping every other week! No wonder grandparents send money!!! And speaking of money, we do get kind of funny with it. Now, we actually know that prices go up a little bit every year, but as we get older we just don’t need to buy as much. The result of this is that when we do go shopping we make terrible noises, like “THAT’S RIDICULOUS! -- How can they charge so much for this junk?” (Maybe the real reason stores have senior discount days is to keep the grumbling down for the real customers during the rest of the week.) AND….our grandchildren make fun of us for eating something called “EARLY BIRDS” --There are “old folks” who are disgustingly energetic and in shape (like the dancing Grannies, for heaven’s sake), but they don’t count. Every group has its aberrations! The rest of us can enjoy our water exercise classes, and keep bragging about our miracle kids. It’s better that way! I am proud to be in the category of grandparent and I hope you are too!
800 NUMBERS and Jobs In The USA
Consider doing the following when you are talking on the phone to any U.S. company's customer service representative that is based in a foreign country (ie: like India).
Any time you call an 800 number (for a credit card, banking, charter communications, health and other insurance, computer help desk, etc) and you find that you're talking to a foreign customer service representative (perhaps in India, Philippines, etc), please consider doing the following:
After you connect and you realize that the customer service representative is not from the USA (you can always ask if you are not sure about the accent), please, very politely (very politely - this is not about trashing other cultures) say, "I'd like to speak to a customer service representative in the United States of America ." The rep might suggest talking to his/her manager, but, again, politely say, "Thank you, but I'd like to speak to a customer service representative in the USA ." YOU WILL BE IMMEDIATELY CONNECTED to a rep in the USA . That's the rule and the LAW. It takes less than one minute to have your call re-directed to the USA . Tonight when I got redirected to a USA rep, I asked again to make sure - and yes, she was from Fort Lauderdale . (This article taken from the internet.)
If tomorrow every US citizen who has to make such a call, and then requests a U.S. rep, imagine how that would ultimately impact the number of US jobs that would need to be created ASAP. Imagine what would happen if every US citizen insisted on talking to only US phone reps from this day on. If I tell 10 people to consider this and you tell 10 people to consider doing this - see what I mean...it becomes an exercise in viral marketing 101. Remember - the goal here is to restore jobs back here at home - not to be abrupt or rude to a foreign phone rep. You may even get correct answers, good advice, and solutions to your problem - in real English.
CORN ROAST AND CORN TOSS TOURNAMENT
On August 18, thirty eight Southfork & Blue Jay residents gathered in the clubhouse for a new type of activity. After a dinner of corn on the cob, baked beans, coleslaw, mixed salads and desserts all attendees were told that they were in for a surprise. Each person who had paid an admission fee for what they thought was for the food were pleasantly surprised to find out that everyone there had been entered into a new game called Cornhole or Corn Toss. The admission money was tagged as prizes and divided between the two final couples. After three fierce rounds of an elimination bracket type of competition the winners were High Steppin' Kathy Gallik, Rapid Robert Downs, Mad Mike and Fabulous Faye Gallagher. Each championship couple walked away with a cool $54 buckaroos. Sue Newton won the 50/50 0/50 drawing.

TODAY IS THE OLDEST YOU'VE EVER BEEN,YET THE YOUNGEST YOU'LL EVER BE, SO ENJOY THIS DAY WHILE IT LASTS. Your kids are becoming you, & you don't like 'em, but your grandchildren are perfect! Going out is good, coming home is better! When people say you look "Great", they add . "for your age!" When you needed the discount, you paid full price. Now you get discounts on everything ...Movies, hotels, flights, but you're too tired to use them and you don’t even have to ask for them???? You forget names, but it's OK because other people forgot they even knew you!!! The 5 lbs you wanted to lose is now 15, & you have a better chance of losing your keys than the 15 lbs. You realize you're never going to be really good at anything ... Especially golf and sometimes “cards.” Your spouse is counting on you to remember things you don't remember. The things you used to care to do, you no longer care to do, but you really do care that you don't care to do them anymore. Your husband sleeps better on a lounge chair w/the TV blaring than he does in bed and it's called his "presleep". Remember when your mother said, "Wear clean underwear in case you GET in an accident"? Now you bring clean underwear in case you HAVE an accident! You used to say, "I hope my kids GET married." Now, "I hope they STAY married!" You miss the days when everything worked w/just an "ON" & "OFF" switch. When GOOGLE, ipod, email & modem were unheard of and a mouse was something that made you climb on a table. You tend to use more 4 letter words like "what?" & "when?". Now that you can afford expensive jewelry, it's not safe to wear it anywhere. Your husband has a night out w/the guys, but he's home by 9:00PM, next week it will be 8:30PM. You read 100 pages into a book before you realize you've read it. Notice everything they sell in stores is "sleeveless"? What used to be freckles are now liver spots! Everybody whispers (why) and now that your husband has retired, you'd give anything if he'd find a job! You have 3 sizes of clothes in your closet, 2 of which you will never wear. But old is good in some things: Old songs, old movies, And best of all, OLD FRIENDS!!! It's Not What You Gather, But What You Scatter That Tells What Kind Of Life You Have Lived
