Southfork News “FOR THE RESIDENTS, BY THE RESIDENTS” RESIDENTS Happy Easter

April 2010

Easter is the Gift…. Easter is the gift of HOPE

Snow Birds

Easter is the gift of Peace Easter is the gift of Love

To all the snowbirds who will be leaving shortly, I have a question for you ..

Let us rejoice in HIM, He who gives all. May God bless you at Easter, And keep you all year through. May God give you all the faith it takes, To make your dreams come true. May His love and wisdom always help, To guide you on your way, May His light shine down upon you now, To bless your Easter Day.

On a regular basis I, send out emails to the snowbirds when there are any happenings here at Southfork, such as deaths, sickness of a resident etc. during the summer months. If there are any happenings or excitement (hurricanes) here that you would not necessarily know and would like to be kept up to date, I would gladly put you on my email mailing list.

I have quite a few that I send out regularly and my email address is: pkaygrossi@yahoo.com

One other thing is that I will continue ntinue to have newsletters published monthly even during the summer months and you can view them on line at: www.floridacommunities.com When you go into this web site, go to the bottom of the page and click on Southfork,, and when it comes up, click at the bottom on either monthly newsletters or the resale’s.

Legend of the Dogwood Tree

An old and beautiful legend says that, at the time of the crucifixion, The dogwood was comparable in size to the Oak tree and other monarchs of the forest. Because of its firmness and strength it was selected as the timber for the cross, but to be put to such a cruel use greatly distressed the tree. Sensing this, the crucified Jesus in his gentle pity for the sorrow and suffering of all said to it: “Because of your sorrow and pity for My sufferings, never again will the Dogwood tree grow large enough to be used as a cross. Henceforth it will be slender, bent and twisted and its blossoms will be in the form of a cross - two long and two short petals. In the center of the outer edge of each petal there will be Nail prints - brown with rust and stained with red - and in the center of the flower will be a crown of thorns, And all who see this will remember.

Missing Kitchen Items Over time here in Southfork there have been many items taken from the Clubhouse Kitchen and it is becoming a concern. We have had Bread, Salt & Pepper Shakers, Can opener, Creamers, and some other items missing. It may sound trivial to some but it is not a funny matter any more. For the Italian Potluck in February a resident purchased 4 loaves of Italian bread and within the hour after they were delivered, 2 loaves were missing and lo and behold when the preparation for the dinner began and the committee went to slice the bread they discovered the missing bread. This took place between the 3:15pm and 5pm on that same day. Same thing happened to the missing salt/pepper shakers (2 different times) that were either thrown away or taken and preparation was being made for another dinner and a scurry to the store to buy more was made‌‌. We either have a childish prankster amongst us or an out right thief coming in. This must be stopped and at our last Association meeting it was voted on to lock the kitchen doors which has not happened. Instead, the Board made a decision to lock both kitchen doors of the storage area instead so that the rest of the kitchen area is available to everyone.. There are a few disgruntled residents over this decision but until someone can come up with a better solution, the situation of the locked storage doors will stay. Do you have a better suggestion or solution for all of this? We do have a suggestion box out in the lobby under the bulletin board and any and all suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. We are at our wits end trying to figure out all of these happenings and why this is going on. Why is this going on in our community that we are so proud of ? Submitted by, Phyllis Grossi

Help us to help all of you!!!!

Census Takers This Year 2010 The big question is – how do you tell the difference between a U.S. Census worker and a con artist? BBB offers the following advice: • If a U.S. Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see their identification and their badge before answering their questions. However, you should never invite anyone you don’t know into your home. • Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify address information. Do not give your Social Security number, credit card or banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it for the U.S. Census. While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information, such as a salary range, it will not ask for Social Security, bank account or credit card numbers nor will employees solicit donations. • Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail or in person at home. However, they will not contact you by e-mail, so be on the look out for e-mail scams impersonating the Census. Never click on a link or open any attachments in an e-mail that are supposedly from the U.S. Census Bureau.

from the Association President Dear Friends and Neighbors, 2010’s weather has been “chilly” but Southfork’s volunteers have kept busy and warm with activities. For the past 3 months the Women’s Club, Men’s Club, Red Hatter’s and the Association have kept the bulletin boards filled with many choices of things to do. The Association activities committee have already plans made for most every month. We need your help for June, July, August and September. Hattie Lane, Marti Witham, Carol Sanborn and Marilyn Wilson need your help. Please speak to them and let them know you appreciate what they are trying to do for you and give them some help. Many hands make the tasks a lot easier. Our St Patrick’s pot luck dinner is an example of that! Thanks to the many hands that purchased the supplies, prepared and cooked the wonderful corn beef, potatoes, cabbage and carrots and all those who brought a dish to share. We were entertained by an Irish singer who is friends with Bill & Betty Laforest and a wonderful group of young gals who entertained us with excellent Irish dancing. There were 90 people attending. Thank you all for the many hands that did the dishes and left the club house spotless! Dot Cady ____________________________________________________________________________________________

ENJOY THE WARMTH OF THIS NEW SEASON OF SPRING!!!!!

From orm’s desk It was sure nice to see the sun shine again and spring is in the air!!!! Hopefully we will have a beautiful summer. We are starting to see some sales activity, people coming out and looking which is a good positive sign that maybe we are on our way to a recovery. I only wish the grass would grow as green as the weeds do. We are doing some needed painting and mending now that the weather is co-operating. Thanks for your understanding and consideration. Let’s keep Southfork clean and well kept, please pick up any debris and throw it in a trash can and if you see anything that needs our attention, please advise me and I will write a work order on it and get it attended to as soon as possible. Thanks, Norm ______________________________________________________________________________________________

Snowbirds reminder Did you remember to have someone take care of your home such as the weeding etc. while you are up North for the summer? Also, it might be a good idea to give a trust worthy neighbor or friend your house key to check the house at least once a month to make sure that you have no water leaks etc. This trustworthy friend should have your northern phone number and another phone number of a family member etc. in case they can not get a hold of you in an emergency. Remember in the summer months we may have some major storms or hurricanes (something we don’t even want to think about) and your house will need to be checked for leaks coming from the roof or other areas. We do have handymen available who can keep a schedule of maintaining your home all summer or until you are ready to return to Southfork. So again, its just a reminder so that all the homes are kept looking good while you are away. Have a great summer and we look forward to your early returns. ______________________________________________________________________________________________

HAPPY EASTER TO ALL!!!!!!!!!

Women’s Club On March 3rd, 41 ladies met in the Clubhouse for their monthly meeting. Brenda Knight, Carol Reno and Ginger Shanbeck were the hostesses for the month and did a beautiful job in decorating the Clubhouse for the St Patrick’s Day theme. We had a speaker from Meals on Wheels out of Zephryhills and her name is Ann Babbit. She was very interesting and one thing that she mentioned is they are short of drivers to deliver the meals. If you are interested in volunteering please contact us and we will give you her number. We presented her with a donation of $100.00 which was much appreciated. After the approval of all the committee reports we presented a check of $150.00 to Andy Davidson (our service man) who had a bad accident and he was happily surprised. The Charity committee likes to help different organizations in Dade City, but we like to help our own people also. Do not forget to pay your dues - $5.00 only for the year. We played a game of Trivia that was a lot of fun and this was followed by a sing along with Colombe Remick leading everyone and it ended with a fantastic luncheon. Our next meeting will be hosted by Mary Bolin, Mary Jo Dye, Bobbi Gillis and Nancy Steding. The Chili Dinner, our fundraiser, was held on March 13th and it was a huge success and we sold 130 tickets. We started out with our Mystery Auction and we had a good laugh when instead of having an auctioneer, we got an executive chef, but the matter was corrected (and you had to be there to appreciate this.) So our famous Auctioneer, Jim Morvatz, assisted by Craig Whitbeck with his very special auctioneer hat, did a fantastic job. Jim inherited his talent of auctioneering from his uncle, Elmer Morvatz. With songs and jokes he auctioned 18 mystery bags for a total of $91.00. Thanks Jim and Craig for a job well done! The auction was followed by the Chili Dinner (sit down) meaning everyone was served by our lovely waitress’s. This was a huge success only because of all the help of the ladies of the Women’s Club and to all the cooks and the help of the good men in our community who volunteered their time. Thanks again for a job well done!!!!!! Our next meeting is on April 7th at 9:30am and I hope to see all of you there. Marielle, President

A Comet in the Sky Some forty years ago a strange comet was discovered fast approaching our little corner of the universe. It was to arrive near Christmas time and was expected to far outshine Haley’s Comet which passes through our area every seventy six years. This comet was discovered by an East European named Kahotek and thus it was so named. One very early, frosty mid December morning, I bundled up and ventured out into the darkness to scan the heavens. I saw Kahotek in the early morning sky My how splendid he looked with his tail stretched three million miles across the landscape of space. And as I watched, he warmed my breast and made me glow. He told me of huge suns and strange galaxies from his distant past - and asked if I wanted to fly with him. I replied that in my heart I yearned to fly with him, but alas I am an earthling --Bound by my insignificance to the earth. And so --I wished him well on his timeless journey. Unfortunately Kahotek was some what of a bust and never did brighten the heavens as does Haley’s Comet which is due back in a few years. Coffee Honor System Just another little tidbit, we have a Coffee Honor System which was voted for in November by the members at the Association meeting because the cost of coffee supply items is increasing all the time. It will only cost $.25 a night for coffee and for all the coffee you can drink. You could not find a cup of coffee at this price any where in the world and the Association needs your help and sorry to those who do not approve. There is no other park anywhere that offers free coffee and we here are fortunate and spoiled over all the freebies we receive. If we don’t hear any good suggestions, who knows maybe coffee being served, may be stopped and I’m sure all the coffee drinkers will be highly disappointed. So help us try and solve this problem and put your concerns, ideas etc in the suggestion box in the lobby and please sign them or they will not be honored. Should we have an honor system at all??? Emergency Information eeded Recently we have had a few cases of emergency’s here in Southfork and when the ambulance and paramedics arrive they have to know certain information about the individual involved. In case of a death there will also be police involved and this is vital information that they must have. They will request health notes and all prescriptions that are taken by the individual. Copies of all prescriptions and names of all the doctors of the patient are very crucial at the time they arrive and these should be kept in a wallet or purse for anyone who lives in the house and all should have a copy. On the side of your refrigerator, should be your doctor’s names, Emergency contacts and if a person has passed away there should be a name of the possible funeral director or crematory that will be used. This is a case when a buddy system is needed, especially for the singles that live alone. ames of children, their home and cell phone numbers are essential when anyone has to be admitted to a hospital or have any kind of medical care given and permission must be given by a member of the family only because of the HIPPA law. Work phone numbers of children should also be available. Trust is a factor here when giving out a key to your home in cases of any emergency. A key should be entrusted to a close friend or neighbor that you know will take care of calling the correct people and also to open a door in case of suspected illness when no one has seen or heard from you in a day or so. So with you and your entrusted buddy or neighbor have certain signals that they will know when you awake daily and that you are okay. If you don’t see an open blind or curtain it may be a signal to phone that person or pay a visit to see if they answer the door and are okay. A phone call daily would not be a bad idea to ensure that you are okay and that you are also checking in on your neighbor at the same time. Come on folks, don’t think it will not happen to you…………….In our age group it can happen to anyone and at any given time. Contact Tony Trubiano for the “FILE OF LIFE” packet that was given by the Pasco Sheriff’s Office with all the necessary information to fill out and it gives a step by step procedure to filling out the forms and a sticker to place on your front door and a magnetic strip for your refrigerator. He has given many of them out at the Association meetings and has more if you need them Also on the next page of this newsletter is a form that should be filled out and returned to Phyllis Grossi, (for those who have not filled out one or if any changes were made since you filled out the last one.) This is for emergencies and will be kept on file.

Southfork Emergency Disaster Planning % Southfork Homeowners Mobile Home Association 10852 Tumbleweed Dr Dade City, Fl 33525 This letter is being sent to all the residents that we do not have any emergency backup information for in case of a home being destroyed by some disaster. Try to use a contact not living here in the park in case they are in the same situation. This also is to be used if any other emergency occurs. This information will not be shared and will be kept by only the board. Here are a few questions we would like to ask you and for you to think about:

If your home was destroyed etc and you were either up North or on a vacation and the Park Manager was not available, how and who would you like to contact you and keep you updated? What do you expect Southfork to do in your case? Do you want the association to help out in any way?

The Association is putting together a plan in case of disasters/emergencies hitting Southfork and below is some of the information we need to get in contact with you or family. So please take a few minutes to fill this out and send back to the above address. You can also place it in the suggestion box in the hallway of lobby at the clubhouse or drop off at 11150 Mesquite Dr, to Attn of, Phyllis Grossi who is putting together a directory of Northern address and Emergency contacts. Volunteering I got to wondering if volunteers know something that the non-volunteers don’t know. Here is a short list of what volunteers know that non-volunteers don’t know.

Volunteering gives you an opportunity to change people’s lives, including your own. Volunteering allows you to meet people you otherwise wouldn’t meet. Volunteering expands your horizons. Volunteering helps you to understand other people who are different from you. Volunteering can give you a new perspective on your own life. Volunteering can help you change the way you view yourself. Volunteering gives you a chance to give back. Volunteering lets you share a skill that you have. Volunteering improves your physical, mental and emotional health. Volunteering allows you to support a cause you truly believe in.

So among the lists of the joys that the coming of spring brings, add volunteering to that list. _____________________________________________________________________________________

ewspaper Recycling It has been noticed that many people are not using the paper recycling bin in the RV area and just disposing of all newspapers for the trash pickups on Wednesday and Saturday instead. For all of you newer residents, we have a large container located in the RV storage area that is located behind the homes on Brahman Drive. It was right near the road as you went in but it is now on the left side as you enter the RV area. There are also containers in the clubhouse, the pool area and in the RV storage area for aluminum cans. Recycling these items keeps them out of landfills, helps the environment and also helps the association with the money collected from the recycling companies.

Thank you.
