Southfork News “FOR THE RESIDENTS, BY THE RESIDENTS” Have a great month!
August 2009
Angel of August She’s regal in splendor, this angel of love. Cascading her flowers from heaven above. To fall from the sky, to land with her peace The angel of August Her heart always seeks The flowers you gather, that fall from the sky Her gift of the spirit That soars way up high. A scent in the air, a petal that lands In velvet she greets you Wherever you stand She touches your soul, with all of her love Sprinkles her softness With joy from above Look up to the sky, to see heaven’s light It’s the angel of August That gives such delight
So far this summer season we have not been threatened by any hurricane’s etc. We are blessed to be living in such a protected area away from all the high waters and the coastal areas that do get hit the most. We have had our occasions of hard rain with thunder and lightning but nothing to speak of. We here at Southfork do have plans in the making in cases of any disasters or emergencies. To date for our emergency contact information we need only about 52 more homes to complete this list. I think this is a great start and also on the bulletin board at the club house there is a CPR sign up list for those who are interested in completing this course. There is a fee involved and the sign -up sheet explains all the details. So if you are interested please sign up so we can get enough people to hold this class. There are committees ready to go with a plan in cases of need for our residents. We do want to try and have as much help as possible when and if the need arises. PS Everyone who lives here in Florida knows that we are the lightning capital of the USA. So if you are in the pool area and it looks like rain or you hear the thunder, we are advising you to get out of the pool area immediately. Also, tell your visitors or family about this situation. The pool area was struck by lightning just a few years back, so please be cautious.
Better to be safe then sorry!!!!!!!!

Safety reminder
Just a reminder for all residents of Southfork Community about ladder safety. As senior citizens we should be extra careful when using a ladder. We should try to have someone with us at all times while we’re on the ladder in case of dizziness etc. and you fall. If this is not possible, having a cell phone in your pocket may come in handy if you are able to call for assistance. We have had a couple of serious accidents involving ladders & stools in the past couple of years and hopefully we will not have any more.

from the Association President Dear Friends and Neighbors, The Maine weather continues to be cold and rainy………….not much sunshine! You all have heard the saying “Wish you were here”, I am saying “Wish I was there.” Enjoying visits with friends, family and my first great grandchild….he is beautiful….and of course, all of us grand parents think that way. (smile) Thanks to Hattie Lane and her committee for the 4th of July celebration….I understand it was great. Attendance at potluck and bingo is down…hope you are just enjoying yourselves with family activities. Take care, keep cool, see you soon! From orm’s desk Wow!! It has been a wet and wild month. The weeds are growing so fast and I believe you can actually see them grow……..However, that does not mean we let them grow and wait for nice weather to pull them. In the future, I will be sending you a note and would appreciate your co-operation. If you are a snowbird and are not here we will pull them and send you a bill. Also, please have someone check your house to see if it needs washing because with all this rain and 90 degree heat, mold and mildew grow quickly. My thanks to those who keep their property clean and orderly, you are an asset to Southfork and we do sincerely appreciate your effort. I have had a meeting of the minds with the lawn people and have seen a vast improvement already. Please be patient because it is difficult to cut grass in the rain. Thanks, Norm
Women’s Club On July 1st the ladies had their meeting in the clubhouse in a very patriotic décor. It was beautiful thanks to Georgia & Don Duarte who put up the decorations and was also helped by Lois Albrecht and Marie Sternhardt, hostess‘s for the month. You should have seen the ladies with their decorated hats and it looked like a Technicolor movie. The first prize was for the most beautiful hat and it went to Neva Morris who had created her hat from scratch, decorated with Red, White and Blue flowers and it even had a bird on it, what a creativity. The 2nd prize went to Sue Peltier who had a magnificent Cowboy hat with all kind of flags on it. The 3rd prize went to Hattie Lane who had a Red, White and Blue Jester hat. All the ladies deserved a prize but we had to limit ourselves to the 3 prizes. What a great group of ladies we have!! After the meeting we had a nice luncheon. Ladies, the children of Dade City are going back to school soon so we will need your help again. A box will be in the Clubhouse and we would like to fill it with school supplies, such as paper, pencils etc. We count once more on your generosity. Out next meeting will be on August 5th at 9:30am by the pool area. Wear your swim wear and we will be going swimming after. See you there, Marielle, President

Combating Critters Do you have any critters in your yard or garden?
Here are a few tips to help!!!!
To keep Rabbits out of your garden, deodorant shavings placed in cloth bags around the shrubs, flower garden etc. help keep them away. Plant “rue” (strong scented woody herb w/bitter tasting leaves) to keep cats out of your garden or yard To see a mole run out, astonished, put a bulb of garlic in its hole Sprinkle red pepper in its holes or gummy bears “ (yes, that is correct) but no human scent should be on anything you put in the holes. Use gloves. Scatter garlic around your yard or garden to deter many a pest - such as raccoons or woodchucks.
ATTE TIO IGHT PATROL PARTICIPA TS
Our ranks have been thinned even more so for the next month or two. So it has become necessary to assign most of us for three nights in August instead of just two nights. If this creates a problem for any of you, please call me (Tony Trubiano) at 813-992-0844 and I will cover for you. Thanks, Tony Trubiano _____________________________________________________________________________________
Mark your calendar:
“BU CO” game is coming in October
A new game of Bunco is scheduled for approximately the 3rd Sunday in October and monthly thereafter on every 3rd Sunday @ 6:30pm. This is very easy dice game and no thinking involved. You can learn this in 5 minutes and we have people who have played the game who are ready to teach it. This will be for both men and women and its for tables in multiples of 4 people. There will be a sign up sheet posted in September to see how many interested people we will have. So ask your friends to come along and plan on a fun evening. There will be a cost of $3.00 per person and we will have about 6 cash prizes given out at the end of the evening. We already have 10 people who are interested and I have already talked with a few snowbirds who want to play the game when they get back to Southfork. So be looking for the sign up sheet in the foyer of the clubhouse on the bulletin board in mid-September. Along with this game we will ask people to bring their favorite finger food (chips, dip etc.) It sounds like a lot of fun especially when someone hollers “BUNCO” and we will use a traveling dice for this event and there will be many surprises. _____________________________________________________________________________________
An elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%. The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, “Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again.” The gentleman replied, “Oh, I haven’t told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I’ve changed my will three times already!”
