Welcome back to all the snowbirds. We missed all of you and we hope you are ready to begin your return and enjoy the beautiful Florida weather. Being October already, most northern residents are already back here in Southfork. You will see some changes, new neighbors, old neighbors gone, more houses for sale and many with and without for sale signs on them. The summer was extremely hot and humid but the pool was put to good use and was packed daily. Now the season is ready to start with all of you back and again, welcome back!

Hurricane Fay Hurricane Fay was knocking at our door on September 18th and we would not let her in. We had the Red Cross visit us to let us know that the Centennial School would be open for shelter if we had to evacuate. So the information was put on the sign at the corner of Wilds/Prairie Road for everyone to see in such short notice. This is one of the reasons why the sign was needed, for information such as this. So in the future if there is anything of importance that has to get out to everyone, this is the place you should look or on the bulletin board in the club house.

I've sure gotten old. I've had 2 By-pass surgeries. A hip replacement, new knees.

Fought prostate cancer, and diabetes. I'm half blind, can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts. Have bouts with dementia. Have poor circulation, hardly feel my hands and feet anymore. Can't remember if I'm 85 or 92. Have lost all my friends.

But.....Thank God, I still have my Florida driver's license!

Hurricane Assistance

It has come to my attention that several of our residents are in need of assistance during a hurricane or other disasters. They are on a list (or should be) for the Emergency Management Special Needs Registration.

Some of them would need a “Care Taker� to go with them to the shelter.

The Emergency Management would pick you and the care taker in Southfork, and take you both to the nearest shelter assigned. At the shelter they do have people to help the needy, but not for individual care. Just in case anyone does not have the Emergency Management number, it is: 727847-8959 and the web site is: www.pascoemergencymanagement.com.

We will be putting a sign up sheet on the bulletin board at the clubhouse for anyone who would be interested in assisting these residents. This list could be used by the resident who would like to contact a care taker.

Please sign if you are willing to help them.

from Norm’s desk For twenty five years or more, we have lived in Florida and still love it. I recently spent ten days in and around Toronto and realize that we complain about traffic, heat, humidity and on and on, but how good we have it here. I thank the Lord that we don’t have to drive in sixteen lanes of traffic with cars buzzing around you and passing you on both sides.

Other than the prices of everything and the traffic, we enjoyed meeting up with lots of family.

Thank you for your consideration of Andrew, he is a good employee and we appreciate his integrity and reliability.

We are having a lot of problems with the filter system in the pool because residents are not using the shower and even though he cleans it and checks it every morning, the filters are still being clogged. “PLEASE” use the shower provided before going in the pool.

There has been a lot of rain earlier in the summer and a lot of homes have mold and mildew on the North side of their homes, so please take a look at your home and see if it needs washing.

Singles We have so many singles here in Southfork and wouldn’t it be great if they could all leave their homes of the “Boredom and the TV” and meet up with others who have nothing to do.

This group could all go to Potluck together, walking, movies, lunch, playing cards etc. This could be a group with no structure of meetings but just getting together.

If there is any aggressive person who would like to step up to get this started let the editor know for information to be put in the newsletter or put something up on the bulletin board in the clubhouse. This could be the best social group in the area and probably the group who has the most fun. _____________________________________________________________

Carport Sale There will be a park-wide carport sale held on Saturday, November 15th starting from 8am to 12 noon.

This is one of the semi-annual carport sales and the other is usually in May. Please watch the calendar and next month’s newsletter for any further details.

from the President Hello from Kentucky. It seems that I have inherited the president’s seat on the Board of the Association. I wish Jim well in his recovery and will do my best to fulfill my obligations to you. We plan to be in Southfork in the later part of October. In the meantime, Marge Morrison, association secretary, has been doing an excellent job of keeping me informed on the issues.

Association Board Highlights What a difference a month makes! At our monthly board meeting in July, Jim had announced to the group that he planned to “totally retire” next year and was determined to settle back, give up all his working duties that he’s been so faithful to in the past couple of years and begin to enjoy his retired years. Unfortunately he has had a tough struggle with his health, but now appears to be on the road to recovery and we’re hoping to see him back home soon. With the resignation of both Jim and Sue, and also our Vice President as well as one of our board members away for the summer, those of us remaining are putting forth our best efforts for the association. With the lack of “manpower” currently available, we made a group decision to cancel (or maybe postpone) the entertainment activities that Sue had tentatively planned. Hopefully we will soon have members back in the park and volunteers ready to “pick up the ball and run with it” so that we can get back on track. Our Labor Day picnic was a great success with 79 attending and a great effort on the part of Al & Lois Albrecht to see that it was another great day. Thanks to all those who made themselves available to pitch in and help _ give yourself a big “pat on the back!”

Hopefully we can put a few more happy times on your calendar and we’ll be discussing them in the upcoming meetings.

(Free) Shuffleboard lessons For anyone interested, Pat Grossi is willing to give free instructions of how to play shuffleboard. The time could be any time that is convenient for you.

Once you learn you can then join the other teams that play daily. This is good exercise and fun and the start to joining a group that is not professional by any means. There is an annual shuffleboard tournament usually in March, but check the monthly bulletins for more details. Call Pat at 567-6105 or Aggie Mitchell at 567-7473 if interested! _____________________________________________________________

Bingo Sometimes it is amazing the things that happen at bingo. A couple of weeks ago a player who seldom wins, won three (3) games in a row and all of a sudden the “boos” were heard loud and clear with a lot of teasing involved.

New players usually win in the first two or three weeks. Most of the regular players sit in the same seats and never changing and leaving the new people to fill in wherever they can. We have a “cookie jar” that can be as much as $100.00 and not bad if you have the right number to win on which takes a few weeks. You would think there was some sort of party going on when the back table gets filled with fattening snacks brought in by our players. So much goes on at our bingo games because our bingo players are very special people. Speaking of special people we have our “Bingo Phil” who has a personality to fit in with all of our people. He is Mr. Personality plus and when he calls that “B11” he uses a squawking chicken and everyone else that has one squeaks their chickens also which is so much fun. So come and join us on Wednesday evenings and the doors open at 6pm.

Attention, Bingo Players Do you enjoy playing Bingo on Wednesday evenings at our clubhouse? I know I do!! The bingo machine is 25 years old and is about to give out. We need a new one desperately! This is a main function of our park and is under the Association along with other activities. Management does not want to see this end, and it is advertised on Southfork web site as a selling feature to live here. Management has stepped up and has pledged $1,000.00 towards a new machine and $1,400.00 has already been set aside by the bingo players by raising the price $1.00. The Association has the funds to step up and help us out. Please support this effort.

Recipe Corner American-style Meatloaf Mini’s (good for Potluck) 1 lb extra lean ground beef 1 pkg (6 oz) Stove Top Stuffing mix 1 cup water ž cup Kraft shredded cheddar cheese Heat oven to 375 degrees. 1. Mix meat, stuffing mix, water. Press into 12 muffin cups sprayed with cooking spray. 2. Make an indentation in center of each meatloaf with spoon; fill each with sauce (barbeque, spaghetti or ketchup) 3. Bake 30 min or until each are cooked through. 4. Top each with shredded cheese and continue baking 5 min or until cheese is melted. _____________________________________________________________

Potlucks are held every 3rd Thursday of the month at 5:30pm. Please bring a covered dish enough to serve 8 people and your own tableware, cups and drinks. Watch the bulletin board for sign up sheets especially in November/December for the holiday meals when special foods are needed.

Come and enjoy your meal with all of your friends and neighbors!

Coffee Hour There is a Monday morning coffee hour each week starting at 8am to 9am.

There is always coffee brewing which is free and we do have donuts for those who are a little hungry and they are $.50 each. What a good way to meet some of your neighbors and start your week.

The men are usually talking about the latest sport event on TV and the women are always talking about the latest happenings in the community.

No agenda or speakers, just a chance for our community to come together.

Bring your smile and wit and we’ll furnish your coffee free. We would love to get to know all of our new residents and the others that have been in hibernation lately. Come join us! _____________________________________________________________

Game of the month Each Monday evening at 6pm sharp there is a game of “Hand and Foot” played at the clubhouse. This is a game of fun and similar to canasta and there are many that can teach you how to play and by the end of the evening you will be a pro at it. Usually the games end by 9pm and we have a lot of women who like to tease and have fun and (we threaten to throw them in the pool) when they start to win to much with a lot of laughter.

We play 2 games of 4 hands for each game and we draw names to see who the partner will be for the evening.

We play in the card room and we are growing so much we may have to move into the big room of the clubhouse and share with the Euchre players in the Fall when all the snowbirds return. So to the new and old residents, come join us for a fun evening.

Women’s Club The ladies of the Women’s Club got together for their last meeting of the summer in September.

On a sad note our secretary, Sue Peltier, resigned from her position. We will miss her because she did an excellent job and was always ready to help, but her priority now is to help her husband get better. So I asked the membership if there were any volunteers for this position and Doris Grandy gracefully accepted to do it until the end of this term. We played a trivia game that was food for the brain.

Due to a conflict on scheduling, our annual Bazaar will be held on December 6th, 2008. We need new articles for our raffle table and slightly used ones for the elephant table.

The Quilters will get together on October 8th, under the direction of Marcie Emley. We hope that Fran Armstrong, who broke her leg during the summer, will get better to be here for the Bazaar, because she worked so hard at it.

Shirley Rouer read a letter of thanks from Cox Elementary for all the school supplies that we donated. What a generous Park we have. We finished the meeting with Hot Dogs & Hamburg’s, cooked by our chefs, Gene Lane & John Quain. Thanks for a job well done.

Please be at our next meeting on October 1st and we will have new things going on. We are going back to our normal time at 9:30am.

Charity Committee Thanksgiving Meals This year the Women’s Club (via Charity Committee) will distribute Thanksgiving meals to 24 Dade City families whose children attend Dade City public grade schools. Need for this assistance will be determined by the four (4) school’s Social Workers.

At the October Women’s Club meeting, each woman will have the opportunity to select a coupon/s to complete one of these meals (total 128 coupons.) Each coupon is designated with specific foods to be purchased and returned to the November Women’s Club meeting. The Club will purchase 24 turkeys and 24 loaves of bread to complete each meal.

We will need the help of every Club member to make this project work. It is one of our most charitable events that we will under take. Without your participation this project cannot happen. So please, come to our meeting on October 1st. The Charity committee meets the last Wednesday of the month and we welcome new members.

The custom of 'trick or treat' probably has several origins. Again mostly Irish. An old Irish peasant practice called for going door to door to collect money, bread cake, cheese, eggs, butter, nuts, apples, etc., in preparation for the festival of St. Columbus Kill. Yet another custom was the begging for soul cakes, or offerings for one's self - particularly in exchange for promises of prosperity or protection against bad luck. It is with this custom the concept of the fairies came to be incorporated as people used to go door to door begging for treats. Failure to supply the treats would usually result in practical jokes being visited on the owner of the house.
