Welcome back to all the snowbirds. We missed all of you and we hope you are ready to begin your return and enjoy the beautiful Florida weather. Being October already, most northern residents are already back here in Southfork. You will see some changes, new neighbors, old neighbors gone, more houses for sale.

The summer was extremely hot and humid but the pool was put to good use and was packed daily. Now the season is ready to start with all of you back and again, welcome back!

Hurricane Season Hurricane season is upon us and so far we here in Dade City have not encountered any bad weather and we don’t want any.

Do not let this put you in the (it won’t hit us mood) because the season lasts until December 1st..

Always be on alert and listen to the weather forecasts. Be ready for any forecast of inclement weather. Stay safe!!!! ________________________________________________

On Sept 26th the Association and the Park Management hosted the first of 3 special occasions to greet new residents and welcome back our "sun seekers".

The second is scheduled Oct 17th @5pm......PLEASE, PLEASE sign up

by Oct 10th, so that we can plan for the seating and food.

The third one is scheduled on Nov 14th. Information will be in the November newsletter.

Library renovations John & Sandi and Andy have completed the renovation work in the library.....great job! . It is most appreciated !

Irene Scherier, our volunteer librarian, has organized the many books back on to the shelves. Thank you Irene!

Activity pictures A huge thank you to Craig Withbeck who down loaded and sorted hundreds of my pictures and Diana Unger who professionally mounted the pictures into a celebration of the many activities we have all enjoyed.

If you look carefully, you will find dear friends who are gone but definitely not forgotten and the many others who are still here and still active. I hope you enjoy!

John and Sandi announced plans to improve the pavilion area.

They need and want resident’s to help in planning it and also to assist in getting it completed! Please see John & Sandi if you can assist.

Blue jay residents had 2 great FUN day’s last year and Phyllis Grossi and I , (with a lot of volunteers needed to help) hope to have ONE FUN DAY In Jan or Feb. just to see if Southfork could also enjoy a fun day. There will be something for everyone, even just coming out to watch.

Women’s Club

On Sept 4, 28 ladies met in the clubhouse for their monthly meeting. The clubhouse was very well decorated by hostesses, Mary Bolin, Mary Clifford and Paula Campbell. We were celebrating all the summer birthdays. We will continue to celebrate the members birthdays for another year.

The committee reports were read and approved. Thanks was given to Carol Whitbeck for the arrangements of the beautiful fall flowers in the two pots near the pool area.

Mary Bolin thanked everybody for their generosity in bringing school supplies that were given to Lacoochee school. Mary also discussed the bazaar that will he held on Novemberr 16 th and hopes that everyone will attend this annual affair. The quilters are working hard for the bazaar and we will still have our bake goods table. We will raffle a $100.00 bill and have a table full of baskets that will be raffled off. We will again be serving our sloppy joes and it should be a fun day for all.

On Oct 2nd we will have a speaker “Dianne Coffield” from the cancer for kids and she will have a nice prize to raffle.

On Feb 5th we are planning a fashion show and plans are still in the making.

On November 6th we will have a speaker form the Dept of Elder Affairs Shine program and they will provide Medicare information such as, Medicare eligibility, The Affordable Care Act, Medicare Supplemental Ins (Medigap) Medicare advantage plans . Medicare 101 will be presented by a Shine Volunteer. There will be a question and answer period as part of this meeting. If you have anything you want to ask, please write it down. Perhaps they can provide some information on Obamacare starting January 2014. There will be a sign up sheet at the clubhouse for this meeting. Please come and bring your spouse This meeting will be followed by a light lunch.

SOUTHFORK WOMEN’S ANNUAL BAZAAR Just a reminder that the annual Women’s Bazaar will be held on Saturday, November 16 th from 8am to noon. There will be many craft tables, our famous bake sale, quilters table and so much more. This year for the very first time we will not have the “White Elephant” table.

We will besides the table sales, have our variety of gift baskets that we will be selling raffle tickets for, and we will also have a $100.00 bill that will be part of the raffle’s available.

We will also have coffee and donuts available for sale and at 11am we will have our delicious Sloppy Jo’s, Chips and a drink for $3.00.

So plan on joining us and help us to replenish our funds that go towards our charity giving during the year.

Blocked Mailbox’s

Just a reminder................It has come to our attention that when we have mail delivery, at times, the mailbox is blocked by residents cars and the carrier has a hard time with the depositing and removing of the mail in the box.

The mail carrier has relayed a message to a few residents that if the mailbox’s are blocked from the carrier, the carrier has the option of returning the mail back to the postoffice and no delivery will be made. This could result in a delay of receiving some very important mail and it will not be the fault of the carrier or postoffice.

So please heed the warning and have all vehicles (business/visitors) parked elsewhere and not in front of the mailbox.

SOUTHFORK CARPORT SALE COMING Saturday November 9th, 2013 from 8am to 12 noon!!!!

This is the time of year to have your sheds, closets etc. cleaned out and try to get rid of things that you don’t know you even have.

We will have the early birds who ride around, starting at daybreak (7am) to be the first at your tables. There is always a lot of traffic through the park and be prepared and ready!

So get started with your set ups the night before and be ready for that first customer who comes along and wants to buy and bargain!!!

THE SEASON’S STARTING AGAIN…………………………………………………..

Snowbirds are flocking back to their southern home. Year long residents of Southfork are looking forward to the first cool front. Summer visitors, including grandchildren off from school, have returned to their Northern homes, with the next school year hanging over their heads.

Signs of community are starting up, with more people at bingo, shuffleboard, card games and the renewed activities of our community.

Welcome back to everyone, welcome to all new residents here in Southfork. winter season is about to begin.

Among us who “summered over,” we’re tired of heat, humidity and thunderstorms. The park has a different feel to it in summer besides the oppressive heat, (it is tooooo quiet.)

Many friends aren’t around----it’s like winter in our northern climates. We stay in our airconditioned homes, take our air-conditioned cars to air-conditioned stores, restaurants and churches. We’re as much prisoners in the summer as we ever were up North in the winter.

But-----and it’s important-----winter’s on its way here in sunny Florida also.

Winter is the time when retired Floridians keep check on the weather up North. Ice storms are recorded and snow depths are accepted with shaken heads and the sub-freezing temperatures are remembered with vague memories. We do let the ones back home know of our beautiful sunny climate….and brag we do!!!!

Winter time is good in Florida…………Winter time in Florida means we can continue moving and doing and appreciating this wonderful state!

To all of us in Southfork, it’s now time to enjoy!!!!!

Just a word of caution when traveling our streets of Southfork. There are many people who walk with canes, are on scooters, people walking the dog or just out walking for the morning or evening for exercise.

Be cautious when you get to the corners and especially streets leading onto Brahman/Bronco Drive. There are blind corners and please, just be careful so that no one gets hit or injured.

DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know what the cheapest but most efficient alarm system everyone has but never thinks of? What to take to bed with you---not a joke, it’s actually a pretty neat idea. I bet you never thought of this before.

PUT YOUR CAR KEYS BESIDE YOUR BED AT NIGHT………

If you hear a noise outside your home or someone is trying to get into your house, just press the panic button for your car and call 911. The alarm will be set off and the horn will continue to sound until you turn it off.

This is a signal that will alert all of your neighbors and after making sure you are okay by letting someone know why you turned it on it could be a signal to other neighbors to be on the alert. If all who heard this press their panic button on their keys and turn on all outside lights until the sheriff responds, this prowler or whomever, will be seen by someone and help the police or sheriff when they arrive. After a few seconds all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see what is going on and I am sure the criminal will not like that.

This tip came from another newsletter article from one of the Heiler communities and I thought it would be worth printing here for Southfork. So who cares if you are awakened at night……for security reasons this should be a must and one of the most least expensive security systems and one that requires no installation.

This would be useful for any type of emergency, such as a person who lives alone and maybe having a heart attack and the keys are right there near you and all you have to do is set that off until someone comes to check on you to call 911. Also great for someone who is working outdoors and falls and carries their keys in their pocket………….set off that button until someone hears it and comes looking.

Remember, it is better to be safe than sorry and we as neighbors have to start looking out for one another and help when help it is needed.

SOUTHFORK FL 0849 Tops CHAPTER ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY (October 6th)

Last October, we started a TOPS group at our Club House. We have done a great job of "Taking Pounds Off Sensibly". Two of our members have received the 50 pounds loss of weight charm and several, the 10 and 20 pounds loss of weight charms.

Missing from this group is our co-leader Shirlynn. As you know, Shirlynn was in a serious car accident but back with us already.

Our "snow bird members" will be joining us this fall ...to add to our total number of 20 members for this Chapter. We are so proud of the progress we have made.

WITH CHRISTMAS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER, perhaps you will want to join our chapter to take off those unwanted pounds.

We meet in the Club House, each Saturday morning at 9 o'clock. Come and join us for a meeting to see if you would enjoy the help of our TOPS Support System.
